Hot Air

The big excitement for me today is that we’re having air conditioning put in. The spring was relatively cool and mild, but our typical summers have us over 100 degrees by now. (And I know for many of you it’s been well over 100 for some weeks already. My sympathies.)

Anyway, we’ve been getting by with window box air conditioners, but it was evident we needed another. We already have three and it seemed silly to have four of them. In the interest of energy efficiency and probably lowering our electric bill, we decided to not be ridiculous and just get the main one put in.

This isn’t as much of a stretch as it sounds like, financially. We saved up $20,000 for roof work last summer and didn’t use it all, so this is a way of continuing to upgrade our home. I’ve retreated to the upstairs so I won’t be in the workmen’s way, and by lunch time they hope to be done.

That means I’ll be able to work on The Tale of the Drakanox at the time I usually do. I finished the big set piece with Ar-Lizelle’s and Duessa’s groups clashing. Now I’m over to Shonn and Piyaro finally connecting with Meven, Berisan and Yamaya in Opshar. Time to find out how their uprising is going. Will Piyaro end up as their enemy or ally, and will Shonn be able to make amends with Meven? Also, what are those bandits up to in the mountains?

Should be a fun bit to work through.

Why Do They?

Just a little weird thing that niggles at me right now. I’ve noticed in some series (book, TV, video game) that you can tell when the writers are about to wrap things up. How do you know? Because everyone starts to pair off.

Sometimes characters end up in really strange relationships. The writers put characters together when they never had any interest in each other before. You know some of these relationships will never last. It’s especially jarring when the series has featured a love triangle and the object of affection finally made a choice. The person left out moves on quickly because the writers are determined that no one should be single at the end of the series.

I get that sex and romance are important in people’s lives. We’re all social beings, and these maneuverings can really keep the audience interested in the story. Still, it feels arbitrary. I get a similar feeling when I hear people talking about women’s lives being so empty and incomplete if they choose not to have kids. Some people seem to feel anxious even thinking that someone might live happily on their own.

Am I just weird?

Cherry Season

It’s that time of year — cherry season! My tree is heavy with bright red fruit, and all down the block you can hear the robins and starlings coming to the feast.

This is a good time to bring up my fourth Minstrels of Skaythe novella, The Renegade of Opshar. One main feature of this novella is that Yamaya, the bandit-turned-farmer, has an orchard of cherry trees on her land. When she hires Berisan as a farm hand, he spends a lot of time helping her pick, dry and pack them for the market.

There are no bandits around my house, but here’s to the cherries, and to The Renegade of Opshar!

The Renegade of Opshar

All Berisan wants is a place to hide. The insignificant village of Opshar seems like a perfect haven. Disguised as a beggar, he can lie low and evade the brutal hunter-guards. But Berisan isn‛t the only one with secrets.

Widowed and pregnant, Yamaya struggles to hold the farm she and her husband built, but she can‛t escape her sordid past. In desperation, she hires the one person who hasn‛t taken a side in Opshar‛s murky politics — the beggar, Sand.

Common sense tells Berisan to walk away, but his code as a minstrel compels him to help Yamaya if he can. Soon he faces a decision that challenges every principle he holds. Will he give up the safety of his secrets, or allow another to suffer in his place?

Woman At Work, July/2022

What’s Happening? Summer break! I’ve been catching up on yard work, house work, and other projects. I’m also closely watching certain Congressional hearings, with varying disgust and despair. It’s my duty as a citizen to listen to the evidence rather than what I think I know. I just wish it wasn’t necessary. And don’t get me started on the train wreck the Supreme Court had become.

What I’m Working On. The Tale of the Drakanox is still top of my list. I’ve just completed a major turning point. The text is rough and needs to be filled out, but the total word count now is around 67,000.

What’s Next? There’s a possibility of some summer travel. Also, my cherry tree is about ripe and I believe there is jelly-making in my future.

Fun and Games. I’m working toward the conclusion Hades, and enjoying it. I’m also still playing Animal Crossing, although I’ve completed most of the main collections, so I can slow down a bit. Not sure what I’ll play after that.

Honestly, with so many setbacks for our democracy, I feel like this summer break is breaking me. Gotta just keep writing. My kids’ teen drama didn’t take my art from me, and neither will all of… this.

A Fond Farewell (Queen Titania’s Court)

As dawn draws near, Queen Titania steps down from her throne. After many lively dances and much good conversation, the magical moon is setting. Titania circulates through the diminishing throng, bidding her guests farewell. Occasionally she speaks with the fey folk who have made the evening’s success possible. The elves in charge of the feasting are apologetic over running short of honey cakes, while goblin guardsmen report a single incident of dueling was quickly resolved.

It is of little concern compared to the personal and diplomatic connections that were established this night. Now, all about the festival hall, the guests whisk away to their domains of origin. Mystic portals close one by one and enchanted music fades…

Until another year has passed, and the summer moon glows brightly once again!

This is where I thank all of you for making Queen Titania’s Court such a wonderful success. I appreciate everyone who participated, whether you offered up your own book or merely commented on a post. I’m especially amazed and grateful for the contingent of New Zealand authors who bring international exposure to Queen Titania’s Court.

I hope you all reap the rewards of your effort, whatever that means to you. Perhaps a few books sold, or new followers for your own blog, or just a chance to talk shop with new friends.

Thank you so much. I hope to see you again in 2023!

Prisoners of the Wailing Tower (Queen Titania’s Court)

Last but not least… Yes, it’s my turn in the spotlight. My character is Alemin, from my high fantasy novella, Prisoners of the Wailing Tower. It’s the latest in my Minstrels of Skaythe series.

Alemin stared in wonder. He had been meditating, waiting through the endless hours of his imprisonment, and now he was… here?

The chamber was huge, crowded with people in the richest and most outlandish attire. Many were dancing, while others mingled in gay conversation. Only, they were not all human. Some had wings, or animal heads. Some were unusually large, others impossibly small. Above their heads, a vaulted ceiling was studded with stars. At the center, a full moon flooded the scene with silvery light.

And there was food! Alemin smelled sweet fruits, marinated meats, and delicate pastries. His starved body demanded that he instantly find that buffet! Yet he hesitated. How was it possible that this could be real? He felt like a beggar in his tattered prison robe.

Yet, if this was a dream, he greatly preferred it to the heavy labor, brutal heat, and shortened meals of the Larder. Alemin was a minstrel, too, accustomed to performing no matter the circumstances. He casually strolled forward to make his greetings — and find that delicious banquet he smelled!

Character Questions

Tell us about the greatest mystery in your world. It is said that, long ago, all people had magic. Everything was shared among them, with no divisions of rich and poor, magic and commons, or even men and women. This seems like an impossible daydream, but there is evidence that it may really be true!

Who are the most dangerous people in your society? Mages, with our great power, have become dominant over the common people. With unlimited power, mages have developed a reputation for unrestrained cruelty. However, there are mages like myself and the other minstrels, who try to undo their evil and teach the world a better way. Most mages would probably say that we are the most dangerous people of all!

Author Questions

Are there any authors who inspire your work? Yes, and we should always acknowledge our forebears. As a kid, I discovered the fantasy of Andre Norton. She was the first author I realized I could save my allowance to buy her books. I also wrote extensive fan fiction for Anne McCaffrey’s Pern series. I love the lyricism of Patricia McKillip, and the philosophy of Ursula LeGuin.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why? I have always been fascinated by ruined cities and lost civilizations, which is a vibe I often bring to my stories. I’ve already visited places like Mesa Verde, CO, and I would love to broaden my horizons. If money and safety were not a concern, I would visit somewhere like Angkor Wat in Cambodia, or Machu Picchu in Peru.

Prisoners of the Wailing Tower

Alemin only wanted to help an innocent. Instead, he was caught by the dreaded hunter-guards. Now he finds himself flung into the Larder, where the very walls are steeped in nightmares and his fellow inmates are vicious killers. Worse, Warden Ar-Lizelle seems intent on tracking down his friends, the Minstrels, who have devoted their lives to undermining Skaythe’s tyrannical regime.

On the outside, the renegade mage Lorrah receives a premonition of Alemin’s plight. She’s desperate to save a man she cares for, but the Larder is commanded by someone she has hated for years and can’t bear to face: her cruel sister, Ar-Lizelle. Luckily, Lorrah is not alone. She has help from the fierce women warriors of Badger Squad. Yet even their combined forces might not be enough to get Alemin free from Dar-Gothull’s Larder!

Running Interference (Queen Titania’s Court)

Today I’m featuring a forthcoming novella. New Zealand author Sam Schenk is bringing out their witchy urban fantasy, Running Interference. It’s the sequel to A Gap in the Veil (pictured at right) and the character is Aiden Latimer.

Aiden pauses, uncomfortable in a slick suit, blue with black suede shoes. This is what one wears to a ball, but he’s never worn anything like this in his life. It’s a little too big, and the soles of the shoes are slick so he’s walking carefully. He’s a sneaker guy. With any luck, all eyes will be on his twin sister, Aya, whose smile lights up the room. She’s wearing light natural makeup and absolutely nails a fitted, peach coloured full length gown with a trail, despite having never worn something like this before.

Together, they find their seats. Aiden makes sure he knows where everything is — where the band will be playing, the best place to observe all the dancers, and he takes a look at the name cards on the surrounding seats to see if there’s anyone he knows. Next, he’ll check out the food and pile up a plate for both he and Aya to nibble while he gets used to his surroundings.

Character Questions

How does magic work for you? Is it different from the usual? Most people think about magic as like, brewing potions and working with herbs, or even working with the dead. But I think it’s time for a new kind of witch. My powers revolve around technology. I can sense the people behind the screen, and I can make sure a wifi cloud follows me. It’d be super useful if mom let me have an updated phone.

Who is your best friend? Stephen has been my mate since we were toddlers. I used to visit his place and go on his Minecraft server to help out. I guess that’s when he started ordering me around (laughs). Now that we’re getting older, it’s more serious. He’s great at finding things for us to do to make a brand online – including a task to embarrass a high profile hacker. That’s going to be dangerous, but I’m excited to try (and the money will get me enough for a new phone)!

Author Questions

How do you handle multiple points of view in a story? For me, multiple viewpoints have to compliment and foil each other. I love choosing contrasting point of views to help to world build without infodumping. While Running Interference and A Gap in the Veil don’t have multiple POVs, what I love to do is have one ‘weird’ pov character that sees the world in a very different way, and one that’s closer to what the audience would perceive.

Is the landscape important in telling your stories? How do you use it? Landscape builds culture. It’s important to have an understanding of the difference between a people who live underground, in trees, on mountains, on the ocean. It provides resource constraints — a people living on the ocean will need to solve for fresh water, and vegetable nutrients, land based construction materials etc. A people living in a mine may have good material wealth, and may be good at trade, but may be hopeless with animal husbandry. By contrast, I love transient or immigrant characters, because you can explore characteristics that might be inherent, or developed without roots.

About Sam Schenk

I was born in Canada, raised in Texas, and matured in New Zealand, where I’ve lived for the past 20 years. I’m a business analyst by day, a mum, writer, and gamer by night.

I love speculative fiction, particularly dystopia, transhumanism, and anything that normalises the rainbow and outside the normal curve of humanity. I’m a sci-fi and fantasy nerd, and love anything that explores life outside of the modern-day.

My first publication came out in 2021, A Gap in the Veil, in association with Contemporary Witchy Fiction. It’s been amazing to be part of the New Zealand speculative fiction gang, and meeting some amazing writers. I’m looking at producing another part to the collection in the same universe, which will be middle grade.

That Dragon Was In No Way My Fault (Queen Titania’s Court)

Everybody welcome Bob Ironspell-Cabas, star of M. H. Bonham’s urban fantasy, That Dragon Was In No Way My Fault. It’s the starter for her series, The Ironspell Chronicles.

“Seriously, Elryn? You think that Titania would want to talk to me?” I looked at my unofficial partner in disbelief. By the way, my name is Bob Ironspell-Cabas, but everyone calls me Ironspell because lot of people laugh when I tell them I’m a wizard named Bob.

Elryn rolled her eyes as she typically does when I say something stupid. She agreed to help me go through the mail piling up at the post office since our latest adventures since she lost a bet with my fiancee, Luna.

But back to the subject at hand: why would the Faerie Court want to talk to me? Don’t tell me I pissed them off, too. “Look, the queen just sent an invitation…” Elryn held up a piece of mail that looked like just another one of those too-good-to-be-true offers that say that I’m cordially invited to stay in a timeshare unit if I can sit through the boring sales pitch.

“You sure she got the right Ironspell? I mean, what would Faerie want to do with me?” I grimaced as I plucked the invite from her hands. “Shit, it’s real. I guess I’m going to have to go.”

Character Questions

Who are the most dangerous people in your world? Oh fuck. You know we have so many bad guys, I can’t pick just one. Fallen angels (we call them Watchers), Void Daemons, the Drow, and, of course, the Cult of the Messiah. The Cult is a religious group whose main purpose is the eradication of all Supernaturals on Earth

Who is your best friend? Gosh, I always say that Tuzren — oops, I wasn’t suppose to say his name, was I? — I mean, Tuz, is my best friend. He’s a daemon from Onoys — a realm in another plane. But I have other close friends, my werewolf financee, Luna, my unofficial Elf partner, Elryn, and my Jotun partner, Vetr.

Author Questions

Are there any authors who inspire your work? Wow, well, Gary Jonas is a friend and fellow urban fantasy writer who encouraged me to write this series. I also like to read Orlando Sanchez, RL King, and Jim Butcher to keep my mind in urban fantasy. I read other urban fantasy writers as well to get a flavor of what people are reading.

When did you know you were a writer? Before I was four years old. Seriously. I attempted to write a book when I was five, seven, and eventually wrote a book when I was 15.

That Dragon Was In No Way My Fault

Bob Ironspell-Cabas, known as Ironspell, is a rookie officer on his third day in the Denver Police Department Supernatural Unit or DPDS. His partner and mentor takes him to the Denver Zoo, thinking that it’ll be a good training opportunity. Instead, they discover a deranged sorcerer has let loose a dragon from the Supernatural portion of a new exhibit called, “The Magical Zoo.”

With a crazed sorcerer and a pissed-off dragon on the loose, Ironspell must use his knowledge and his magic to stop both. Otherwise, Denver is in for some serious trouble. What’s more, the sorcerer has taken hostages and threatens to feed them to the werewolves in the Lycanthrope House.

The problem is Ironspell isn’t exactly a wizard — he learns his spells by reading magazines like Popular Wizardry. Can Denver and the Denver Zoo survive Ironspell’s attempts to save the day?

Margin Street Zeroes (Queen Titania’s Court)

Today we welcome Frankie, who’s visiting from Robin Banks’ LGBTQ and neurodiverse urban fantasy series, Margin Street Zeroes.

Frankie peered through the door with eyes roughly the size of dinner plates. They didn’t see anyone they knew, which was too bad because they had so much to tell them. But they did see a big buffet table! They crept over to it and began to stuff their face and pockets. Elegant slices of cheese went straight into their mouth. Cherries and chocolates were stored for later. After all, they were Gio’s favourite foods!

After a bit, they spotted a fountain with some sort of glittery drink. They immediately snagged a glass. It wasn’t a single malt, but it wasn’t too bad! Then they noticed a throne at the head of the room, where a lady was talking to one of the guests. Frankie guessed they were supposed to go thank her for the hospitality, but first, just one more drink!

Character Questions

Who is your best friend? Gio! She is the most wonderful person in the whole wide world! He’s clever, and pretty, and kind, and just so good at EVERYTHING it blows my mind! We met totally by chance and I still have no idea why she wants anything to do with me, because he’s so great and I’m all over the place, but I’m not complaining. Am I lucky or what?

I wish he didn’t worry so much about stuff because I know that there’s nothing she can’t deal with, but, huh, his brain kind of misfires sometimes, I guess. She’s still the most wonderful and perfect person ever, though! Oh, we got married! Twice! But we only had a proper ceremony the second time, with a viking boat and everything! And one of our best friends did the actual marrying bit, because he’s, huh, well, technically he’s a god, but he only does turnips and staple foods so you’d hardly know it. And our other best friend who’s his boyfriend — our other friend’s boyfriend, I mean, not Gio’s — he was there, and our landlady and my uncle who is also technically a god but mostly he’s just a huge pain in the ass, but don’t quote me on this! And the raccoons wore tutus, because Gio kinda likes stuff like that even though he’ll never admit to it, not even under torture.

Author Questions

Are there any authors who inspire your work? I don’t know about inspiring my work as such, but my favourite writers are Spider Robinson, Tom Robbins, and Emma Bull. I’d give at least a kidney to be half as good as them. Tom Robbins writes the bounciest stories ever, Emma Bull writes characters I end up feeling I know better than most of my friends, and Spider Robinson is just all-round fantastic.

Margin Street Zeroes

My family is pretty simple, when you get used to it. There’s me, Frankie, Ben, and AK. Frankie and I are with each other, and Ben and AK are with each other, but not like that. They don’t want to be with each other like that, though, so it’s cool, even though it took me a while to get used to it. Ben and I are best friends, and so are Ben and Frankie. Frankie and AK are also good friends, largely because Frankie is the friendliest person ever and a natural wonder, but AK is pretty cool, too. AK and I don’t always get on, but we try. I like people of all genders, and so did Frankie, but now that we’re together they really only like me. Ben also thought that he liked me, but that’s because he hadn’t got himself quite figured out. I like Ben a lot, but not like I like Frankie, and that used to be super awkward until we straightened it all out. AK doesn’t really like anyone – not like that, anyway. Mostly he likes sci-fi, brewing his own booze, and chilling. Somehow, it all works out.

We’re all university students, but AK isn’t actualy enrolled, because he doesn’t legally exist. We live in our house because a librarian rescued me from a snow storm. We have three semi-domesticated raccoons, but that’s not really our fault; they lost the ability to speak, and now we feel responsible for them. Oh, and Frankie can spot lies and teleport, and they could technically break reality, but they don’t want to, so that’s not an issue. We can all open magical portals, and AK is the god of turnips, but we don’t hold that against him. It’s all good, really. This is the story of how we got there.

Check out the countdown sale, just $.99 beginning June 21, 2022! About Robin Banks

I was born a while ago, and these days I don’t regret it too often. A fan of peregrinations with a terrible tendency to get myself marooned, I currently dwell with an excessive number of dogs right at the end of the big cabbage field. That’s the big field with the cabbages, not the field with the big cabbages. Don’t be silly.

I enjoy road trips, dogs, guitars, and getting into scrapes. My favorite writers are Tom Robbins, Spider Robinson, and Matthew Stover, Rory Miller for non-fiction. I refuse to be landlocked, because you need to have *some* standards. I like Irish coffee with condensed milk in lieu of cream. You can’t help some people.

There is a rumor going around that I might in fact be a collection of raccoons hiding inside a hoodie, but that’s not been confirmed to date, possibly because I bite.

I have also written about neurodivergence as Ash Banks (https://www.amazon.com/Ash-Banks/e/B08TMMNPZH), and about self-defense and recovery from violence and trauma as A.R. Banks (https://www.amazon.com/A-R-Banks/e/B09JHP4FT5).

Chaos Hunt (Queen Titania’s Court)

Kelly “Thorn” Henderschott is here today, from Sheryl R. Hayes’ urban fantasy, Chaos Hunt.

“Mr. Kelly Henderschott of the Conclave of Rancho Robles.”

Thorn bit the inside of his cheek as the butler announced his entrance into the ballroom. What possessed me to choose that name for this identity? He must have been drunk at the time.

He made his way to the Faerie Queen and bowed low. “Queen Titania, Elder Marcus sends his greetings. He regrets that he is unable to attend in person and has sent me in his place.”

“Yes, I do know Jordan Abbey. I heard that she made an impression on the Court. Elder Marcus specifically requested that I tender apologies necessary for her behavior.”

“Yes, she is living up to her title of Chaos Wolf, much to everyone’s chagrin. She still prefers the company of vampires and refuses to have anything to do with the Black Oak Pack. I can’t blame her because one of the younger members of the pack bullies her and the Alpha Wolf refuses to do anything about it. Personally, Montgomery and I have a wager about when Jordan finally decides she’s had enough and about how much damage she’ll do.”

“I can neither confirm nor deny the recent deaths in Rancho Robles, nor Jordan’s involvement in the situation.” He smiled. “But if you are curious about her latest misadventures, I can tell you about her attempt to find a lost dog…”

Character Questions

Who are the most dangerous people in your world? You wouldn’t believe it to look at them, but that would be Jordan and Mac. She’s a werewolf who has chosen not to follow the Pack Traditions. He’s the vampire who enables her. Neither of them seem to realize what a dangerous game they are playing. And I’m afraid it’s going to come back to bite them both.

What kinds of things do your people like to eat? I’m a vampire. My dietary options are pretty limited. But I do prefer a good human B- when I have the choice.

Author Questions

How do you handle multiple points of view in a story? Each POV gets their own chapter. The majority of the chapters will be from the POV of the main character, but there will be several from secondary characters for necessary information that the main one has no way of knowing.

If you could travel anywhere in the world (assuming complete safety) where would you go and why? The question is where wouldn’t I go? If money and were no object and my safety guaranteed, I would love to do a worldwide tour visiting every country and continent.

Chaos Hunt

Werewolves are apex predators. So why does she feel like prey? Territory, honor, the trust of her peers – Jordan Abbey has earned none of these from the supernatural residents of Rancho Robles. The werewolves shun Jordan as a creature without honor for siding with the vampires. The vampires dismiss Jordan as an unruly pet who needs to be kept on a much shorter leash. Chased out of the wilderness and not allowed to shift within the city, she is without any place for her inner wolf to run free.

Someone is killing the servants of vampires. Soon vampires themselves fall victim. Each attack is linked directly to Jordan, fueling rumors that she is working to undermine the vampires’ grip on the city. The werewolves dog her steps, harassing her whenever and wherever they can.

Then, in the heart of vampire territory, the corpse of a werewolf who bullied Jordan is discovered. The children of the Wolf and the Bat are ready to go to war, and Jordan is caught squarely in the crossfire. Can one woman prevent the annihilation of the only place she calls home?
