Character Spotlights: Best Friends at Fleur di Lee’s

Friendships are the backbone of many great stories, and in Painted Love, Sierra’s relationships with Daniel and Kaylee bring humor, heart, and depth to her journey. Some of the funniest scenes and one-liners come from Daniel and Kaylee interacting with each other. Today, I want to share a bit about these two wonderful characters and their dynamic with Sierra, as well as a glimpse into what makes their bond so special.

Daniel, Kaylee, and Sierra, chatting at the bar at Fleur di Lee's

Daniel: The Steady Presence with a Crazy Side

Daniel is one of those friends who can light up a room with a smile and always seems to know the right thing to say. Loyal and hardworking, he’s the kind of guy who has your back no matter what. He’s based on a dear friend I worked with years ago when I was waitressing and bartending—a person who made even the toughest shifts bearable with his wit and charm.

In the book, Daniel often serves as a grounding presence for Sierra, balancing her moments of doubt with encouragement. But let’s not forget his wild side! Daniel is also the life of the party, with over-the-top humor and antics that keep everyone on their toes. His ability to be both a stabilizing force and a source of unpredictable laughter is what makes him such an unforgettable character.

Kaylee: The Spirited Firecracker

Where Daniel brings steadiness, Kaylee brings energy and sass. She’s the friend who’ll tell it like it is, all while cracking a joke that leaves everyone in stitches. As a coworker at Fleur di Lee’s, Kaylee and Sierra share the ups and downs of the service industry, forming a bond that’s equal parts camaraderie and comedy.

Kaylee’s humor and boldness often spark some of the most entertaining scenes in the book, and she’s not afraid to push Sierra out of her comfort zone when needed. But beneath the jokes and quick comebacks, she’s a fiercely loyal friend who’ll stand by Sierra when things get tough.

Friendship in the Heart of New Orleans

At the center of all this is Fleur di Lee’s, the bar where Sierra, Daniel, and Kaylee’s paths intertwine. It’s more than just a workplace—it’s a haven where friendships deepen over shared shifts, laughter, and even the occasional disaster. Whether it’s Daniel’s witty banter, Kaylee’s fiery spirit, or Sierra’s quiet strength, their chemistry creates a dynamic that’s as entertaining as it is heartwarming.

What Makes a Great Friend?

For me, Daniel’s character is a tribute to a real-life friend who brought light to some of my most challenging days. That’s the magic of friendship—the way it can lift you up, make you laugh, and remind you that you’re never alone.

I’d love to hear from you: What do you value most in a best friend? Share your thoughts in the comments below!

If you haven’t met Daniel, Kaylee, and Sierra yet, I hope you’ll take the chance to step into their world in Painted Love. Their friendship is one of my favorite parts of the story, and I can’t wait for you to experience it, too.

Painted Love is here!

Blog Post Draft: Announcing Painted Love

Well, y’all, I reckon it’s time to share some mighty big news. After more cups of coffee than I can count and a whole heap of late nights, my new book, Painted Love, is finally here! 🌟

This story’s got a little bit of everything—romance, mystery, a touch of magic, and that good ol’ Southern charm we all love so much. It’s set in the heart of New Orleans, where the streets are alive with music, the food’s as spicy as the gossip, and the air hums with secrets.

Meet Sierra
Now let me tell y’all about Sierra. She’s an artist trying to make her way in this wild and wonderful world, but life’s got a funny way of throwing her some curveballs. When her old ’57 Chevy Bel Air (she calls it The Beast) decides to give up the ghost, Sierra finds herself crossing paths with Emile—a mechanic with a voice like velvet and a past that’s just as mysterious as the city itself.

And oh, honey, did I mention the villain? Nero Malleus is as slick as a freshly buttered biscuit and twice as dangerous. Let’s just say Sierra’s about to find out that not everything in New Orleans is as it seems.

Why You’ll Love It
Painted Love is more than just a story. It’s a love letter to New Orleans—the magic, the grit, and the soul of the city. If you’ve ever wanted to stroll down Bourbon Street or feel the pull of a place steeped in history and mystery, this book’s for you.

Whether you’re a fan of forbidden love, a sucker for a good villain, or just enjoy a story that’ll keep you turning the pages faster than a crawfish boil sells out, I think you’ll fall head over heels for Sierra and Emile.

Get Your Copy Today!
You can grab Painted Love on Amazon right now in e-book or paperback form. (And don’t worry, sugar, I made sure the pages are sturdy enough to handle your tears, laughter, and a little bit of swooning.)

Here’s the link to make it all yours: Amazon Link

I hope you love reading it as much as I loved writing it. If you do, leave a review or send me a message—I’d love to hear from y’all! Now go grab a sweet tea, settle in, and let Sierra and Emile take you on an unforgettable ride through New Orleans.

Much love,
L.

Writers ARE Immortal…if we continue to read them.

Spot on thoughts at the loss of the great Terry Pratchett….

I woke up a bit ago to the news that Terry Pratchett passed. While not surprising, as he had been suffering with a VERY bad form of Alzheimers, it always hits one in the gut that there wont be anything new forthcoming. That the talented and humorous voice has moved on. And yes, there are a few tears happening here at Casa du Casey.

As long as we readers continue to be readers though, the writer has achieved a bit of immortality. They get to continue to put thoughts and images into our minds long after shucking the ol mortal coil.

Im having a bit of a time getting my mind into the writing game today as this news has really bopped me in the head, and so I dropped in over here to unload a bit. Clearing the jets as it were.

Life is short. Tomorrow sometimes doesnt

Cookin’ Up Something Good

Hello Dear Readers,

I have been away for a bit. The holidays stole a good deal of my time and things have been so busy that I haven’t had time to chat. Welcome all you new folks who decided to follow me, I do appreciate that, y’all.

With it being the Christmas season, I spend a lot of time cooking up goodies. It’s traditional that I make cookies to share so I thought that I would share a recipe or two in the next couple of weeks that are typical southern fare. I mention food quite a bit in my books as food is a part of the quintessential New Orleans experience.

What’s that you say? Y’all haven’t read my book? Well here’s a little excerpt from That Voodoo That You Do

Louise opened the door to Delphine’s knock and a wave of anise and vanilla scented air washed over her.

“Yum…I smell cookies,” she said, hugging Louise.

Louise smiled. “You know she made them special for you, cher. How you been?”

“Bien, bien, Louise. You look radiant in that purple hat, I must say,” she said, winking at the old woman.

“You like it,” Louise asked, adjusting the purple flowered and sequined straw hat a bit. “You know Pierre likes purple,” she added, winking back at Delphine.

“Are you still chasin’ that old man?” Delphine asked, laughing.

“Oh, she’s done caught him.” Euphralie smirked as the two of them entered Lolo’s small kitchen.

Delphine gave Euphralie a hug. “Hello Euphralie, it’s good to see you.”

Euphralie kissed her on the cheek. “It’s good to be seen, cher.”

Delphine slipped over to where Lolo was putting cookies out to cool and grabbed a handful of the soft, warm delicacies. Lolo smacked her hand with the spatula playfully.

“I got a gâteau voleur in my kitchen,” she said teasingly.

The anise cookies in question are a traditional Italian recipe and are usually made around the holidays. They are often iced and topped with candy sprinkles. The recipe for them can be found at food.com here: http://www.food.com/recipe/italian-anise-cookies-with-icing-and-sprinkles-214498

Did y’all also know that anise is believed to have magical properties and is used in voodoo?

Used to help ward off the evil eye, find happiness, and stimulate psychic ability. Fill a sleep pillow with anise seed to prevent disturbing dreams. Use to invoke Mercury and Apollo. Great for aromatherapy. Use in purification baths with bay leaves. A sprig of Anise hung on the bedpost will restore lost youth. Use in protection and meditation incenses.

What are your favorite cookie recipes? I need some new ones and I’m always looking for something different to try.

Well, I’m off to have another cup of coffee and get some laundry done. Tell your Mama and them I said “How y’all doin’?”

Some rain must fall

beautiful-rain-pictures-45-photos-36

It has rained steadily for two days now here. Y’all know what that does to my hair. I had two exceptional hair days this week in a row. Lawd, that hasn’t happened since 1983. Rain is delightful when you don’t have to go anywhere, and it is particularly lovely weather for stayin’ in and writing, or reading a good book. (have ya’ll got your copy of That Voodoo That You Do, yet?)

I am currently writing the next book in the Crescent City Magic series called Painted Love. Emile was such a favorite character in Voodoo that he just had to have his own story. You can read the first chapter if you buy my book as it features a preview at the end. Painted Love due out in the spring of next year.

So what do y’all do when it rains like this? I declare I could always be talked in to shopping, but that is an indoor sport. Some people actually like to get out in it and do whatever they do. If you are lucky enough to have a sweetheart you can always cuddle up, throw some music on, and…well…steam up the windows, shall we say?

Well, darlins, I will leave you with a lovely tune from the divine Ms. Ella Fitzgerald and the Ink Spots. Into each life some rain must fall, y’all…

Y’all drop buy again real soon, sugar…and tell your mama we missed her in church last Sunday.

Ain’t nuthin but a hound dog…

animals_other_bad-dog_67239

A little teaser from That Voodoo That You Do….

As she pulled in to the drive, she saw a big, black Ford pick-up parked next to Toutu’s truck.

“Merde,” she spat. “Marco.” Great. Name a bad dog and he shows up to cause trouble. She did not feel like dealing with this.

“Merci, cher.” Maybelle came out the front door to meet her. “I appreciate you doing this. His fever has been high.” She lowered her voice and whispered, “Marco is here. He heard about what happened and came to see Emile.”

“Yes, I saw his truck.” Delphine grimaced. “I would rather not come in, Maybelle,” she began when the screen door slammed.

“Well, look who the cat dragged in,” Marco drawled. He looked the same as ever. His slow, lazy smile had made many a heart melt, but Delphine was immune now.

“Hello, Marco,” she said, trying to keep the icicles out of her voice. She wanted nothing to do with him now. This was a complication she did not need.

Now y’all know we have all known them. They show back up and cause trouble after we are done with them. Go on and confess. How many of you have let them back in, only to have them pee on the furniture and chew up those darlin new Christian Louboutin heels you just bought? Uhm..hmm…I’d be takin’ a rolled up newspaper to that one.

Tell your Mama I asked after her…
