Top 10 Albums of A.R.Rahman That Defined The Past Decade
2010-19 was a challenging decade for our Isaipuyal A.R.Rahman. What with the surge of commercial (Harris Jayaraj, Anirudh Ravichander, Gopi Sunder, Mickey J Meyer, etc) and innovative (Santhosh Narayanan, Ghibran, Govind Vasantha, Leon James, Vishal Chandrasekar, Sean Roldan, Darbuka Siva, etc) music directors, Rahman had to maintain his class and foothold in the industry. And, yes, he churned out albums with the same elan, without losing his signature style. His music evolved along with the needs of the youngsters, while his fans complained about not finding the Rahmani-sh touch in his songs. Nevertheless, he still stays at the top and I can swear that no one can replace him.
Here I am listing out top 10 albums of Rahman that defined the past decade:
1. Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya (2010)
Obviously! No other soundtrack has recreated the magic of VTV. Gautham Menon’s first collaboration with Rahman was such a blockbuster that the album attained a cult classic status. Listen to all the songs from this soundtrack. You’ll never regret it! It won a huge number of awards.
2. O Kadhal Kanmani (2015)
The modern successor to VTV. I can also quote this as the most innovative soundtrack of Rahman in the past decade. I never expected such an experimental album (Kollywood) from the Mani-ARR combo. It was a roaring hit and each song is a gem.
3. Rockstar (2011)
If I said OK Kanmani is the experimental album of Kollywood, then it is Rockstar in Bollywood. The awards this album won exceed the tracklist. Some notable awards are IIFA, Filmfare, Mirchi Music Awards, GIMA, and Zee Cine Awards. The Sufi song Kun Faaya Kun is my lifeline and the number Nadaan Parindey saved me from depression last year.
4. Tamasha (2015)
Another Imtiaz-ARR combo that became a runaway hit. This is another experimental outing by Rahman, where songs like Chali Kahaani and Tu Koi Aur Hai display Rahman’s versatility, while there are also some peppy tracks like Matargashti, Heer Toh Badi Sad Hai, and Wat Wat Wat. Moving numbers like Agar Tum Saath Ho and Safarnaama are cherries on the cake. This is one of my therapy albums.
5. Kaatru Veliyidai (2017)
If you can wholeheartedly appreciate Tango Kelaayo and Jugni, then you have an absolute winner here. The other 4 songs are eternal classics in themselves. The album fetched Rahman the Best Music Award in the renowned 65th National Film Awards.
6. Enthiran (2010)
Yes, I am including this biggie in this list, because it not only had the commercial factor, it also presented the quirky side of Rahman. There were a couple of innovative songs like Kilimanjaro and Arima Arima, while stylish tracks like Irumbile Oar Irudhayam and Boom Boom Robo Da are still aired in radio stations. Not the most-loved album of the decade, but certainly the highest-selling one, due to the Rajnikanth factor.
7. Ai (2015)
Another Shankar-ARR combo with commerciality stamped all over it. Rahman went ‘thara local’ with Mersalayitten, roping in Anirudh Ravichander to croon the song. However, the song’s arrangement was Rahmani-sh all over. The soundtrack won majorly because of its couple of ear-pleasing melodies, Pookale Sattru Oyivedungal and Ennodu Nee Irundhaal (both the versions). Also, it had a couple of experimental songs, Aila Aila and Ladio, which worked wonders and pleased all the Rahmaniacs out there. No wonder it won in the Best Music category in 63rd Filmfare Awards (South).
8. Raanjhanaa (2013)
I would certainly tell that Rahman went back to his classical roots with this album. Encompassed with traditional sounds and classical notes, this gem of an album was a turning point for Rahman in Bollywood. Folkish melody Tum Tak, energetic Raanjhanaa Hua, classical Banarasiya and Ay Sakhi, Sufi-esque Piya Milenge (this one track catapulted the entire soundtrack to its glory), the patriotic Tu Mun Shudi, the breezy Nazar Laaye, and the jazzy Aise Na Dekho, and what not! Though overshadowed by other commercial soundtracks of 2013, this wholesome album catered to all music lovers.
9. Achcham Yenbadhu Madamaiyada (2016)
Remember the Thalli Pogathey phenomenon? Yes, this album is home to that utterly breezy and innovative romantic number. On first listen, you wouldn’t like it, obviously. But, on repeated listens, it will grow on you. And, you’ll be addicted to it for the rest of your life. The album also had gems in the form of Rasaali and Avalum Naanum (a lilting melody that brought back Rahman of the yore). The high-octane Showkali and the cheesy Idhu Naal are slow-burners. This beautiful album fetched Rahman a Filmfare award and many other world-renowned awards.
10. Highway (2014)
Yet another Imtiaz-ARR combo album. All their three collaborations have taken a position in this list, so you can know that this combo will never fail you. The soundtrack of Highway is like a soothing balm to your soul. Casual listeners would just love Patakha Guddi and Maahi Ve. But there are some therapeutic numbers like Heera, Sooha Saaha, Kahaan Hoon Main, and Tu Kuja. Hugely underrated, but this album brought out the musical genius in Rahman. It also won the Best Music award in GIMA Awards.
P.S: I am not including biggies like 24, Mersal, Sarkar, 2.0, and Bigil here. Because, these are DEFINITE albums that made Rahman a huge hit among gen-next youngsters. But I personally feel that these are soundtracks that Rahman composed only with the star-factor in his mind.
Some personal favourites of mine:
Ye Maaya Chesave (2010)
Raavan / Raavanan (2010)
Jhootha Hi Sahi (2010)
Jab Tak Hai Jaan (2012)
Mariyaan (2013)
Chekka Chivantha Vaanam (2018)
Sarvam Thaala Mayam (2019)
Some albums that just didn’t work:
Yes, Rahman can slip, too. So, here are some albums that were definite bombs.
Komaram Puli (2010)
Lekar Hum Deewana Dil (2014)
Lingaa (2014)
Sarkar (2018) (Sold well, commercial winner, but didn’t work with me)
Other albums released in the past decade:
Ekk Deewana Tha (2012)
Kadal (2012)
Kochadaiiyaan (2013)
Kaaviya Thalaivan (2014)
Mohenjo Daro (2016)
OK Jaanu (2017)
There are many English films’ OSTs which I have not included in this post. Refer to Rahman’s discography.
Wishing my music God an advance happy birthday!

A Kiddy Decision – an opinionated story about wanting or not wanting kids
It was a rainy evening. I entered Starbucks for a cup of cappuccino. As usual, my body was hungry for the daily dose of caffeine. To my shock, the cafe was jam-packed. Only one pair of seats was unoccupied. I rushed to the table and sat down. Opposite to me, a couple was seated, discussing something regarding their careers and sipping on cappuccinos. I smiled at them and they returned the smile. There was an aura of happiness around them and I admired their ecstatic faces. Two minutes later, a waiter arrived and took my order.
After that, the couple introduced themselves (Vaanya and Nakul) and asked about me. I fell into easy conversation with them.
I asked them, “How long have you been married?”
“Eight years,” replied Vaanya.
I just nodded and flashed a smile. I didn’t want to ask the next question, which would obviously be about kids. I was not that stereotypical person, who saw marriage and kids as the way of settling in life.
“We don’t have kids, by the way,” Nakul quipped in, suddenly.
“Oh, I am so sorry! But I never wanted to ask that question.”
“Why should you be sorry for that? I think I should rephrase Nakul’s sentence. We don’t want kids,” Vaanya said.
They would have expected me to express shock and concern over such modern ideas. But all I did was to tell them that wanting kids is a couple’s choice and it is not an obligation.
“Vaanya, it is perfectly okay to not want kids. I think all couples should talk to each other before marriage, regarding the decision to have kids. If one wants kids and other doesn’t want them, then it is better to part ways. It is not advisable to enter into marriage and have kids forcefully. Also, a couple can arrive on a mutual decision to not have kids and then get married.”
“Yes, Nakul and I stood strong in our decision. We never gave in to pressure, just because our parents wanted to become grandparents. Kids need parents who are completely loving, attentive, caring, and supportive. They wouldn’t want parents who are sulking about their lost dreams and regretting their decision to have reproduced.”
“Perfect observation!” I exclaimed, while the waiter brought my cappuccino. I took a sip of it and continued, “I don’t think couples should set ‘having kids’ as their next milestone. They shouldn’t give in to popular opinions like ‘kids are everything’, ‘kids hold a marriage together’, ‘kids continue your family line’, etc. They should have children only when they deeply desire to bring up an individual and happily watch them grow.”
“That’s true! Vaanya and I want to concentrate only on our careers, goals, travel, and passion. We think that a kid is a huge commitment and we should sacrifice a part of ourselves, which we cannot do. So, we decided not to have kids at all. The society will be judgemental, but our happiness and peace of mind are more important than their opinions,” said Nakul.
“I am so proud of you both. And, I am happy to be acquainted with you. I am on a mission to become friends with people who have liberal thinking and are really outward. Thank you for your time. I really enjoyed this small talk. I have to leave now, as I am going to the hospital. My best friend is eight months pregnant – forgive the irony of it – and she has a scan today. So, she needs me beside her.”
“Okay, Sahana, it was good to talk to you. See you someday!” Vaanya replied.
I left the cafe, after exchanging numbers with the couple. I felt really light and peaceful, after the enlightening conversation.
*****
I met Madhumitha, my best friend, in Hope Maternity Hospital.
“Hey, how’s the little champ inside?” I asked.
“Kicking and moving all the time. I really enjoy this feeling, Sahana,” replied Madhu.
Before I could ask the next question, she was summoned by a nurse and then she was taken to the scanning room.
I fiddled with my phone for a few minutes. A heavily pregnant woman paddled slowly to the seat next to mine and sat on it. I flashed a smile at her and asked, “First baby?”
“Nope, this is the second one. My first one is playing with some children outside.”
Something was really amiss. She wasn’t looking happy, as she spoke about being pregnant for a second time.
“Hey, are you okay? You seem to be in an off-mood. Sorry, if that sounds too personal.”
“No, that’s fine. And, yes, I am not okay. I am not frigging okay with this pregnancy!” She got all tensed and clenched her fists tightly.
“Hey, hey, relax. You shouldn’t get so worked up when you’re pregnant.”
“Why shouldn’t I? I never wanted this pregnancy. I was forced into it. People around me harassed me into conceiving this child.”
I placed my palm on her arm and held it gently. I was afraid that she might have a breakdown, and it would affect her health and also of that unborn child.
She continued, “This system is all fucked up. The woman’s wish must be taken into priority, when it comes to having second baby. If a woman, who wanted to have two kids, changes her mind after giving birth to the first one, the family must respect her decision. It is she who went through the entire pregnancy, the turmoil of labour or C-section, postpartum troubles, and other emotional issues. Why can’t people understand that?”
“I understand you. People should not force a woman to have another kid, telling that if she has gone through it once, she can surely go through it again. It is not for them to decide what she can and what she cannot. If a woman tells that having another baby will affect her mental health, people must respect her. No one would want a mom who is depressed and completely stressed out. Everyone would like a happy mom who can wholeheartedly take care of both the kids.”
“You know, how many of them enforced their old-fashioned opinions on me? Two are best, they said. Having two can teach them to share, sacrifice, and help, they said. I have seen successful and happy single children, who have never felt the need to have a sibling. People even threatened me by telling that if anything happens to this one child, I’ll be left childless. So, if anything happens to one of the two, it’s not a suffering, eh? Anyway, loss is a loss. Those morons never understood anything. They never took my wish and my mental health into consideration. Not even my husband cared about me!”
She was on the verge of tears. My grip on her hand turned tighter.
“Don’t worry. I am not going to tell you anything about how you have to grow motherly instincts, now that you’re pregnant with the second baby. All I will tell is that you should take care of yourself. Love yourself and put your mental health into priority. Start a self-care regime and find happiness within you. This is very important for you to keep the light burning in you. We women are not sacrificial goats. Let the people around you understand that.”
“Thank you! I needed to hear that. I feel better after pouring out my sorrow to you. Actually, you know, this second kid thing is applicable even to a man, who doesn’t want another baby, due to financial issues or other personal reasons. People must respect his decision, too.”
“Yes, a couple should have another baby, only if they both really want one. People shouldn’t pressurize the woman into bearing another child, just because she is a woman and she is supposed to keep reproducing.”
The woman let out a chuckle. I continued, “People shouldn’t judge a couple who don’t want kids and and a woman who doesn’t want a second kid. I am specifying ‘woman’ in the latter, because I have never heard a man being judged for not wanting a second kid. Sadly, patriarchy always wins here. I wonder how many other women in this hospital are pregnant for a second time after being tortured by the people around them. Well, there are some happy faces, too, who are really excited about the second one. But, what about the other women? Sigh!”
Madhumitha came out of the scanning room. She smiled at me and showed me the scan reports. I felt really happy to see the tiny face in the scan. But, no, my motherly instincts were not awakened. I was still the Sahana who didn’t want to marry or have kids. I waved at the seated woman and wished her good health and happiness. After all, I could do only that. I couldn’t turn back time, meet her in the past, ask her to tell ‘no means no’ to the people around her, and maintain her peaceful life. Only if I could that!
Hey, readers! Hope you enjoyed this opinionated tale. All these opinions were posted by me on my social media accounts. But they sounded too preachy and there were too many ‘don’ts‘ in it. So, I converted them into a story form and posted here.

Christmas Eve – A short horror story
December 17…
“Wow! The concept is good. I would like to have the completed movie within a week. It’s short. So, probably it wouldn’t take much time,” said Pritham, the Chairman of Short Film Association.
“Thank you, Pritham. I am starting the shoot tomorrow. The casting has been done,” said Tanmay, a 25-year-old aspiring film director, folding his completed manuscript and placing it inside his bag.
He walked out elated at the thought of winning the Short Celluloid competition. As he progressed, he chalked out the complete plan in his mind. Beginning with the settings and up to the final editing, he had it completely sketched in his mind. All he had to do was to jot down the film plan in his diary, which he maintained for movie ideas. He entered the parking lot, climbed on his bike and rode away with a chill breeze sweeping across his face.
He stopped by the Crosswood Cemetery situated in the heart of Bangalore. Having bought a bunch of beautiful marigolds, he made his way through the graves to the one he often visited, within no time. He placed the bunch of flowers on the gravestone and knelt beside it. Tears flowed from his eyes. There were none in the graveyard except him.
Though it was only 5 PM, the cold air and the eeriness of the atmosphere made him cringe. He let his tears flow for a few more minutes and then spoke, “Thank you, my darling. This wouldn’t have happened without you. I love you…” He was speaking to the tomb of Anushkriti, his girlfriend who had passed away two years before.
He stood up and went out of the graveyard as fast as his legs could take him. Though he was a non-believer in ghosts, something about the place horrified him. Maybe it was Anushkriti’s memories or maybe it was the trauma, which he underwent when he witnessed her final journey to heaven. He raced for his home to catch some much needed sleep.
Back in the graveyard, a muffled moan emanated from Anushkriti’s grave.

December 24…
Christmas Eve
Tanmay crept inside the kitchen to drive away a black cat that had entered in his absence. The cat was peacefully sleeping on the kitchen’s windowsill. Sensing human movement, the cat stirred. The next moment, it turned and stared into Tanmay’s eyes with its green shining eyeballs. Tanmay screamed in horror and the black cat fled from the scene, jumping out of the window.
For a few moments, Tanmay could not comprehend what had happened. He wiped off the sweat beads from his forehead. He realized that he frightened a poor cat, instead of silently shooing it away. He could not believe that the fear of a black cat’s eyes had gripped him. Heaving a sigh of relief, he opened the fridge and took out the roasted chicken, which he had saved for the Christmas Eve.
With the sumptuous dish in his hand, he dimmed the lights in the hall and plopped down on the cosy sofa. “Should I watch Insidious 1 or 2?” he spoke to himself. There were two DVDs on the tea table. He closed his eyes and slowly hovered over the DVDs with his index finger. Suddenly, the persistent ringing of the telephone pierced through the tranquil atmosphere of the house. Adrenalin gushed throughout his entire body. He opened his eyes and frantically gulped some saliva. His legs wobbled as he stood up to attend the call.
“Hel..hellooo..” he stammered.
“Tanmay beta, how are you?” the voice at the other end asked.
Tanmay heaved a sigh of relief. He wondered why his mom did not call his mobile phone.
“Ma, I am fine. I am glad that you called me. I was shivering with fear a few seconds ago.”
“Oh my God! What happened, beta? Anything bothering you?” asked his mom, with her usual concern.
“Nothing, Ma. I just feel creepy to live in this big house all alone. Even a small cat or a telephone ring terrifies me. I don’t know what happened to me. I used to be a brave guy. But…”
“Don’t worry about anything, dear. You will get accustomed to the house. It’s just been two months since you moved in. You will feel all right after a few days. Be friendly with your neighbours so that they might help you if you are in trouble.”
“Okay, Ma, I feel better talking to you,” saying so, Tanmay began playing with the end of the oval mirror that hung on the wall above the telephone. His eyes slowly moved over to the mirror to catch a glimpse of his face. But, he was shocked to see two reflections on the mirror! The second one was that of a girl, standing behind him.
“Aaaaaaa…” he screamed. The receiver slipped from his hands. He turned back and saw. There was none behind him! He searched the entire drawing room, but she was not there. He was sweating profusely. He opened the bathroom to check if anyone was present there. After double-checking all the rooms, he was sure that he was hallucinating. Closing the doors of all the rooms, he moved to the drawing room once again. He picked up the receiver and placed it back on the base.
He silently seated himself on the sofa. His mobile phone began ringing. He picked up in an instant, knowing that it was his mother.
“Hello, Tanmay beta, how are you?” His mother’s cheerful voice boomed over the phone.
“Ma! You called me just now, right? To the landline?” He asked, his eyebrows furrowing automatically.
“No, beta, I did not call. I don’t even know your landline number.”
Tanmay felt paralyzed for a moment. He realized that something was horribly wrong and abruptly cut the call. He looked around the wretched house. There was no sound except the ticking of the clock. The serene mood of the house was disturbing him. He remembered the gala days, which he had spent with his family back in Jaipur.
Slowly, he reached for the water bottle. He sipped some water to wet his dry throat. The next moment, the water turned red. It was blood.
“Yuck!” Tanmay spit the water and threw the bottle away. His eyes widened as he saw the rolling bottle on the floor.
“This can’t happen,” he said to himself. There was only water spilled on the floor, no blood.
“I saw blood a moment before. How can this happen? I can’t hallucinate this much. I have not been affected by anything…” But there was no one to comfort him. He was his own partner. He looked out of the window to call any neighbour to strike a conversation, so that he might not feel lonely, but there was nobody. Everybody was probably celebrating Christmas with their families inside their homes. He could only see a beautifully decorated Christmas tree and a shining pink star dangling in the house opposite to his.
Exactly after ten minutes, everything was back to normal, or Tanmay presumed so. He was gobbling up the roasted chicken in small pieces, savouring every bit of it. He then chose Insidious 1 and inserted the DVD inside the player. The movie began with its title and the characters’ names. The B/W eerie images, which were displayed along with the names, sent a chill down his spine.
“I should not be watching this now. First, it was the cat, then the telephone, the girl-like reflection, mom saying that she never called, and finally the water turning red. Something is wrong with me. And yet I have chosen to watch Insidious,” he spoke to himself. Though his mind cried out to switch off the TV and go to sleep, he never budged from his place. He fixed his eyes on the screen, for the movie was about to begin.
He clutched the hand rest of the sofa as the sequences began to play on the screen. He shuddered and shivered when he saw a Hindi movie being played on the TV instead of Insidious. He stopped the player and ejected the DVD. He checked and it was indeed Insidious 1. He inserted the DVD in his laptop to check. It was perfect.
‘“How come?”’ he thought and once again inserted the DVD in the player. The title showed ‘Insidious’ and the titles were being shown. And then, the marriage video of his parents began playing. Then the TV automatically turned off!
Tanmay was too stunned to move. He was sure that he had inserted Insidious 1 DVD. But what he had watched was beyond explanation. He became aware of the presence of a spirit inside the house.
“I am not hallucinating. There is a ghost in here.” He wondered how he could believe in ghosts. But whatever happened in the past one hour was enough to make him believe in everything that was scary. He tried to stand up but his legs weren’t cooperating.
Suddenly, he felt a hand on his shoulder. He was not able to turn his head around. The grip of the hand turned firm. He felt someone breathing near his neck. He could smell the fresh fragrance of cologne, which he had known for many years.
‘That’s Anushkriti’s perfume,’ he thought.
“Who are you? Come and stand before me!” he yelled at his tormentor. A shrill devilish laughter echoed throughout the house. Tanmay’s heart pounded with fear. His face expressed complete agony. Even then, he thought that the invisible intruder was a human being and not a ghost. The hands engulfed his neck and he choked. The intruder placed its chin on his head and let out a laugh. It then placed its hand below Tanmay’s chin and made him to look up. And he saw Anushkriti. Her hair was dishevelled. Her teeth were stained red as if she was chewing on paan. Her eyes were watery and her cheeks had scars. She was deadly in appearance. Tanmay had a panic attack and his brain stopped responding. His eyes were transfixed on Anushkriti. He felt numb and her fingernails were burying deep into his neck. And then blood gushed out, soaking him completely. Anushkriti closed his eyes with her palm and let out a tiny squeal of joy.
“Ghosts do exist!” she chortled and vanished, leaving behind Tanmay’s lifeless body.
Then the screen in Room no. 7 of SFA Studio turned black. The words appeared in bold letters:
A film by Tanmay Sharma
The credits began to roll and the spectators were jolted back to reality.
“Woooohoooo! Tanmay you nailed it, yaar!” Tanmay’s friends applauded and carried him as a mark of victory. Tanmay looked at Pritham who was still in some kind of trance after watching the movie. He came over and congratulated him.
“Well done, Tanmay! I haven’t been scared like this before. This movie gave me the jitters. The first half, which you played yesterday kept me guessing what would happen next. I even made out my own scenes of how the character ‘Tanmay’ would realize the presence of ghosts, and the second half, beginning from the black cat, was just mind- blowing. You have brought out all the elements of a perfect short horror movie.”
“Thank you soooo much, Pritham. I am overwhelmed!” said Tanmay, with happiness dancing on his face.
“Well, casting yourself was a great idea. What about the girl in the movie?”
“Ha! That girl is a look-alike of Anushkriti, my deceased girlfriend. I had almost launched a hunt through the entire city for this doppelganger.”
Pritham’s expression changed to that of shock. He asked, “But don’t you think casting someone in a dead person’s identity would receive the wrath of the dead, that too, Anushkriti being your loved one?”
“Ha ha ha…is this some kind of joke, Pritham? Do you also believe in ghosts? There is no such thing. Chill out, man!” said Tanmay, patting on Pritham’s back.
Pritham smiled uneasily and waved him a goodbye, promising to showcase Tanmay’s Christmas Eve movie in Short Celluloid competition.
*****
Tanmay swung his bag over his shoulder and started the bike. It was 10 PM. He was crooning a happy song to himself. He was glad that Anushkriti’s death had brought out something useful. That being Christmas eve, he felt merrier than before. He thought about the roasted chicken that was waiting for him in the fridge. He reached his home rather quickly. Parking his bike in the garage, he walked towards the entrance. To his horror, he found the main door ajar. Immediately, he concluded that a burglar had broken into his house but there were no signs of breaking and entering. The door was opened as if by using a key.
“Who is there? Come out! I am gonna call the police,” he yelled.
Suddenly he heard the sound of anklets, followed by a shrill laughter. He looked around to call a neighbour for help, thinking that the thief was a girl, but no neighbour was in sight. The sound of anklets turned heavier and it reached the main door. As Tanmay had his eyes fixed on the floor, he saw a pair of girl’s legs appear at the entrance. He looked up and then froze. Standing there was a translucent version of Anushkriti. She spoke in a whispery voice,
“You played with the dead. Now is the time for the dead to play with you. Merry Christmas! Come inside. Let’s have some roasted chicken, darling…”
An unknown force pulled Tanmay inside and the door shut behind him.

Diya Rai – Epilogue
“Mom, I’ll send you as soon as I can. Please leave me alone.” Brian hollered and shut his laptop forcibly.
“Hey, Brian, chill. No need to get so worked up.” Diya came over and wound her arms around him.
“Nowadays, I don’t think she is being herself. For the past three years, I have been sending her money. Whatever she needs. When I told her about my decision to live-in with you, all that she said was I can do whatever I want, but I should send her money every month. And I have been doing that precisely. This month I had planned something for your – your birthday. That’s why the delay in sending her money. But she’s blaming me as if I’d stop sending her anymore money.” Brian ranted his lungs out.
“Cool down, Brian. All these things happen, when you are living-in with your girlfriend and you are not abiding by your parents’ wishes.”
“What about your mom and dad? Are they calling you?”
“Dad’s calling me once in a week. Mom will never come around. It’s been three years. If she’s still the same, I can’t help it.”
“Does your dad ask about me?”
“Occasionally. Anjali calls me twice a week. She’s also chatting with me in WhatsApp. And she announced that she is getting married to Preyosh next month.”
“Preyosh? That painter cousin of yours?”
“Yes. Right after I broke up my friendship with him, Anjali hooked on to him. But there wasn’t any relationship between them. They were good friends. Meanwhile, Anjali went through two more breakups. When she was 22, she once again warmed up to Preyosh and they eventually fell in love. They have been going strong since then. She’s 25. I know she can take clever decisions. Hope she’ll have a good life.”
“And how did your parents react to her relationship?”
“As usual, mom wasn’t too keen on getting her married to Preyosh. However, it’s a family issue. So she couldn’t avoid it. She had to accept it. Dad was cool about it.”
“Fine. I don’t think your mom would invite us. Anyway, we have to go for Anjali’s sake.”
“Yeah, we will. We can try to ignore mom.”
“What about Hannah? She is on due, right? Did she call you?”
“Yeah, she called me. Expecting her baby in March. Karan seems all excited. He’s going crazy over choosing a name that would sound both Indian and Australian.”
“Ha ha. That’s funny. Mahima and Ronnie? Any news?”
“They don’t seem to be interested in having any more kids. Taanvika is giving them enough trouble. They are on their toes almost all the time. Before you ask about Mike, let me tell you the truth about him. He just discovered that his inclinations are towards men. So he is going out with a guy named Brandon. And, may I ask you, why are you so intrigued to know about them all of a sudden?”
“Just felt like asking. It’s been five months, since we have spoken to them or gone out with them.”
“Yeah, it’s been ages. We should catch up with them sometime.”
“Okay, so, what about us?”
“What about us?” Diya repeated the question.
“Are you interested in kids?”
“No. Not yet. Are you?”
“Nope. I think we are doing fine, except the occasional fights that burst out of nowhere.”
“Burst out of nowhere? It’s you that’d always blow up something-“
“There you go…”
And they kept fighting and loving each other thereafter.

Diya Rai – All’s Well That Ends Well
Diya’s rest of the stay in Melbourne was pretty eventful, though she had to take care of Brian all the time. On her persistent request, he shifted to her apartment, so that he could be fed and nursed well. Over the days of his stay in the apartment, there wasn’t a single day when the two lovebirds didn’t make love. It was all magical for Diya. As for Brian, he was experiencing happiness in its purest form. They discussed their future together and finally came to a conclusion that they’d never get married and they’d stay in a live-in relationship forever. They didn’t want to have kids, as neither of them felt the necessity to bring up children.
“My mom’s gonna have the shock of her life, when I tell her my decision,” said Diya, while folding her clothes neatly and stacking them up in her suitcase. The duo was leaving to Bangalore that evening.
“And what do you think about my mom? That she’d rejoice when I tell her my decision?” Brian snapped.
“Oh, I don’t think so she’d react like my mom. Mrs. Mamta Rai is a drama queen. Even after we move in together, she’ll try to separate us. You wait and watch.”
“Ha ha ha. You’re so pissed off, Diya. What about your dad and Anjali?”
“My dad won’t care and Anjali will be the happiest girl in the world. But life would become difficult for her. My mom would make sure that she pays for what I did.”
“Pity on her. Okay, what about Karan? Did he call you?”
“Yeah. He told me he’s still trying to get a posting in Melbourne. He wants to be close to Hannah. And they are going strong. Poor Mike, I don’t what he is gonna do. Hope he should end up with a girl soon.”
“Don’t worry about that. You call him up after a month and he’ll be already dating a girl.” Brian laughed.
Diya threw a pillow at him. “You haven’t packed yet. C’mon, buck up!” She yelled.
“Oh ho, don’t act as if you are my wife.”
“I am your wife, even if we are not legally married.” Diya replied, taking one of her panties and throwing it at his face.
“Hmmm, this smells good. Why don’t we continue packing after a quickie?”
Even before Diya could retort, Brian undressed himself. Well, Diya couldn’t say no after that. It was an immediate turn on for her.
After half-an-hour of lovemaking, the duo dressed up, ordered room service, finished their lunch, and started packing again. They called up Hannah and Mike and fixed a meeting with them.
*****
“Oh my God! I am gonna miss you guys.” Hannah was almost on the verge of tears.
“Hey, chill, Hannah. Karan will come back soon. Then you won’t miss us much.” Diya pacified her.
“That’s not the issue, Diya. I have never had friends like you. All through my life I was this timid introvert girl, who didn’t socialize much. I didn’t even have best friends, because they thought I was weird. I used to write stories that were full of horror, mystery and suspense. When I showed them to some of my classmates, they told me that I was a lunatic and that the stories didn’t make them feel good. Somehow, I came up in life and landed up in a job here. So, when you guys hung out with me and when I fell in love with Karan, I felt that life was finally turning better.” Hannah’s voice cracked.
“Oh, my! I never knew that you had such a miserable past, Hannah. We are sorry. We’ll surely keep in touch with you. And you are not weird. You are as sane as the rest of us.”
“Yes, you are easygoing, Hannah. We will miss you once we’re back in India.” Brian piped in.
“Don’t worry, guys. I’ll keep a constant check on her.” Mike reassured them. Hannah smiled in response.
“Mike, why don’t you start dating?” Diya asked him.
“Well, I actually started dating, but my date was already in love with someone and asked me to stop seeing her. So-“
“I am so sorry, Mike. I didn’t expect that to happen. I didn’t even realize my own feelings at that moment.” Diya made a sorry face at him.
“Hey, that’s okay, Diya. I need some time to go out with others. Right now I am enjoying this phase of my life.”
“Okay, do you guys see yourself getting into wedlock and leading a domestic life?” Brian asked to Hannah and Mike.
“I have not thought about marriage yet. Once Karan comes here and we settle down in the relationship, I might be able to decide.” Hannah said. Brian nodded and looked at Mike.
“I don’t believe in the institution of marriage. But things do change. I might consider it in the future.” Mike put forth.
“That’s interesting, Mike. Well, Diya and I have taken an oath that we’d never get married in this lifetime. We are going to live-in together and lead the rest of our lives as lovers.”
“Wow! That’s so romantic. What about your families? How will they react?”
“To hell with families, Hannah. We are two mature individuals who can decide for ourselves. Well, we are going to hurt people around us. We know that. But they’ll surely come around sometime later in life.” Diya replied.
The conversation went on for another hour. Then they clicked selfies and bade farewell to each other. Diya and Brian reached the Melbourne airport in another half-an-hour. Finally, they were off to Bangalore with hearts full of memories.
*****
“Diya! Oh my God!” Mamta Rai screamed and hugged her daughter.
“Hi, beta. Welcome back!” Rohit Rai came out of his room and embraced her. Anjali Rai was nowhere to be seen.
“Hi, Ma. Hi, Papa. How are you both?” Diya asked them.
“We are fine, beta. How was your trip?” Mamta asked, while helping her with her bags.
“Splendid it was. I just love Melbourne. Hope I go back once again for another assignment.” Diya beamed.
“Good to know, beta. Well, I saw your pictures in Facebook. Were they your friends?”
“Yeah, Ma. They are my best friends.”
“Didi!” It was Anjali. She came over and hugged her sister and plopped down beside her.
“Hey, Anju, how are you?” Diya asked her fondly.
“I am good, Di. Was taking a bath. How was your stay in Melby?”
“Don’t ask me as if you don’t know. You were chatting with me the whole time.” Diya snapped. Anjali made faces at her.
“Okay, then tell me about your boyfriend?” She whispered stealthily.
“Shut up, Anju! I am gonna throw a bomb today at dinner. Till then keep quiet.” Diya whispered back.
“Whaaat?! Are you married?” Anjali’s voice raised two notches higher.
“Keep your voice down, Anju, for heaven’s sake. No, I am not married. This is worse than getting married.”
“You’re pregnant?”
“Fuck off!”
“What are you girls whispering over there? Let me also join you.” Mamta intervened.
“Just some girlie chat, Ma.” Diya managed the situation. She glared at Anjali and signalled her to go away.
After a heavy lunch of Chicken Biryani with Mutton Chops, Diya felt sleepy and retired to her mom. She called Brian to inquire about his well-being.
“Hey, Brian, have you settled?”
“Yeah, Diya. Well, my apartment looks shitty, actually. I must clean up in the evening.”
“Ooooo, I am soooo sleepyyyy-” Diya let out a huge yawn.
“Go and sleep, my angel. We will talk later.”
“Hey, listen. I am gonna reveal about us at dinner today.”
“That’s great! Even I was going to do the same, but via video call.”
“All the best, then.”
“All the best to you too.”
“Okay, bye, I am gonna call Mahima and Ronnie now.”
After a few minutes, Diya was engaged in a lively conference call with Mahima and Ronnie. They were surprised that she was going to move in with Brian. They were also disappointed to know that there won’t be a gala wedding to celebrate their relationship.
“I thought I could dress up like a queen and be the cynosure of all the eyes at your wedding.” Mahima complained.
“Don’t even dream about a wedding, Mahi.”
“I thought there’d be lots of food and I can gorge on them.” It was Ronnie’s turn.
“Ahhhh! Will you guys shut up? I am having the jitters over here. Can you at least come over? Like, when I reveal my decision, my mom is sure to overreact. She would kick me out. And then when I come out, you guys should escort me to Brian’s place. Is that okay?”
“Don’t worry, Diya, we’ll be there on time.” Ronnie reassured her.
Diya felt better after talking to her best friends. She slept like never before.
*****
“Ma, Papa, I have something to say.” Diya declared. Mamta and Rohit stopped eating immediately. Even Anjali dropped her spoon and got ready to witness the catastrophe.
“What is it, Diya?” asked Mamta, rather suspiciously.
“This is something serious, Ma. I have thought about it well and it is a wise decision for me. I know this won’t go down well with you, but I have no other choice.”
“Cut the crap, Di, and come to the point.” Anjali put forth. She was very eager to know what her sister had decided.
“I am in love with a man named Brian Josh.”
“Wow!” Anjali exclaimed.
“Bri – Brian Josh? A christian?” Mamta was shocked.
“Yes, Ma, he is a christian. But is that an issue now? You wanted me to get married and here I am with the news of being in love with a boy. You should be happy for that.” Diya replied, irritation evident in her tone.
“Don’t tell me he is an Australian.” Mamta said.
“No, Ma. He is not an Australian. And why should that matter to you? All you needed was to see me get married to a guy, right?”
“Well, Diya, of course, it was my dream to see you get married to a good-looking, well-educated Indian, preferably Hindu, boy.” Mamta’s voice shook.
“That doesn’t matter anymore, Mamta. When your daughter tells she is in love, you must ask about the boy’s character, education and job. You should not plunge into his religion and nationality.” Rohit Rai joined the conversation.
“Thanks, Papa. Well, he is an English Literature graduate. He was a feisty traveller, who got paid to write travel articles for his website. Due to financial constraints, he took up a job as a full-time English professor in St. Joseph’s college. His dad passed away a few years ago. His mom lives in Gurgaon and he stays alone in an apartment here.”
“Diya, are you out of your senses? How can you love a mere professor? What will he earn? How will he manage the family? I thought he might be a IT professional or a NRI.”
“Ma, it’s you who is out of senses. Okay, listen to me completely. Will you?” Diya lost her cool and she began hollering.
“Keep your voice down, Diya. I am your mother.”
“Yeah, you are my mother, but don’t you go patronizing my life as if it is yours. My life is mine to live. I love Brian Josh. And, wait, I am not gonna get married and have kids and blah, blah, blah.”
Mamta froze in her chair. “What are you talking about?” She hissed under her breath.
“Yes, Ma. I am talking about my life. I am gonna move in with Brian. I thought I could tell this to you calmly, but you started some nonsense and made me lose my temper.”
“Move in? What’s meant by that?” There were tears in Mamta’s eyes.
“I am gonna be in a live-in relationship with him forever. We are not marrying each other and we won’t have kids, too. This is my decision and I am gonna stand by it. Ma, you never supported me in anything. And I know you won’t support me in this, too. Even if I tell that I am going to marry him, you wouldn’t have allowed me to. You would have patronized me and tried to change my decision.”
“Diya, but – “
“I didn’t ask your permission, Ma. I am informing you of my decision.”
“Diya, beta, please calm down. Let’s talk it over.” Rohit Rai said. Mamta was sobbing uncontrollably and Anjali was consoling her. She looked up at Diya discreetly and showed her thumbs up.
“Papa, this is my decision. Do you accept?”
“I accept your decision, beta. It’s your life. Do whatever you want. I know you’ll be happy with Brian. Go ahead and live with him.”
Diya was dumbstruck at her father’s words. She never thought he would give in so easily. She ran over to him and hugged him.
“Thank you so much, Papa.” Her eyes brimmed with tears. She turned to her mom.
“Ma, what about you?” Her voice turned stern.
“You are right, Diya. It’s your life. Your decision. Go and live with him, but make sure you don’t come back to this house.”
“What do you mean, Ma?”
“You are a disgrace to this family, Diya. I never knew that my bringing up would yield such disastrous results. I don’t want a daughter who is so carefree and modern. Yes, I am not supportive of your choices, opinions, and decisions. That is me. You can move on. I don’t want you in this house.”
“Ma, how can you be so mean?” Anjali asked, out of the blue.
“Anjali, this is none of your business. You have no say in this. If you are going to follow your sister’s footsteps, you can move out along with her. We will be better off without two disobedient daughters.”
“Di, I support your decision wholeheartedly. At least you have the courage to stand up to this mean mom of ours. All the best for your future life.” Anjali stormed off to her room, before Mamta could react.
In spite of all the hullabaloo, Diya smiled to herself.
“What are you grinning at? Pack up your things and leave now.” Mamta yelled.
“Mamta, be easy on her.” Rohit said.
“I know what to do.” Mamta snapped.
“Ma, I am leaving. It’s better to leave this hellhole than live in it along with your strict rules and regulations. Goodbye.”
Diya climbed the stairs to her room and dumped all her clothes and accessories in a big suitcase. She came down after half-an-hour. Mamta was still crying at the table, with her hands on her head.
“I am leaving. I will send people tomorrow to evacuate my room and shift my things to Brian’s apartment.” Diya informed. Mamta ignored her and continued to stare at the wall. Diya bade goodbye to her dad and sister.
When she came out, she found Mahima and Ronnie waiting for her in a car. She went over and hugged them both.
“How are you so correct, Diya? You said your mom will kick you out and she did that.” Mahima said.
“That is my mom. Well, don’t remind me about her. My temper would increase.” Diya wiped a few tears that were rolling down her cheeks and got into the car. They sped off to Brian’s apartment.
*****
Brian was fidgeting his fingers. On the way to his flat, Diya called him up and narrated what had happened at her home. He bit his nails and waited for her eagerly. He knew that she would come that very night, hence he had cleaned up the apartment. It was sparkling like a palace.
The doorbell rang after a few minutes. He opened it enthusiastically. Diya beamed at him and embraced him in a tight hug.
“I am so, so, sooooo happy, darling.” Brian said in a singsong voice.
“Well, I can’t say that I am soooo happy, since I have just now escaped from a disaster. As days pass by, I would know how happy I am.”
Mahima and Ronnie placed her bags in the hall and introduced themselves to Brian.
“Hope you keep our Diya happy. I’ll break your bones, if I come to know that you trouble her.” Ronnie said jokingly.
“I will. This is a promise, Ronnie.” Brian replied.
“I am really happy for you guys. We will drop in once in a week. We can also hang out together.” Mahima said.
“Sure, Mahi. We will meet soon.” Diya replied.
After some chitchat, Mahima and Ronnie left. Brian closed the door and lifted Diya in his hands. He swirled around with her.
“Brian, that’s enough!” Diya tried to wriggle out of his grip desperately.
“What’s the hurry, baby?”
“I am starving. I think I should have told them after consuming dinner. Hope you have some Maggi in your fridge.”
She opened the fridge. Thankfully, Brian had stocked up different flavours of Maggi. She took out her favourite Chilli Chicken flavour and moved to the kitchen.
“Did you have dinner?” She asked him.
“Yes, I just went out to purchase few things. Had a dosa on the way.”
As the aroma of Maggi filled the kitchen, Diya turned and looked at Brian with love-filled eyes.
“So?” She asked.
“So what, baby?”
“What next?”
“A good life, I hope.”
“A perfect life, I say.”
Diya moved closer to him and locked her lips with his’. Indeed, it was going to be a perfect life for them.

Diya Rai – Everything Falls Into Place
Diya called Brian at his mobile number. She had a nice dream about him and she decided to share it with him the first thing in the morning. The call was attended by a woman.
“Hello.”
“Hello. Can I talk to Brian?” Diya was instantly suspicious of the attender.
“Hey, this is Maria. Can you come to St. Vincent’s Hospital right now?”
“Why? Where’s Brian?” Diya panicked.
“Brian met with an accident yesterday night. We were partying nearby. So we took him to the hospital right away. We were waiting for somebody to call him on his mobile phone, since he had set a pattern lock and it was difficult for us to contact-“
“Maria, I – I’ll be right there!” Diya almost yelled and hung up.
Immediately she refreshed herself and changed into new clothes, all the while praying God that nothing serious should have happened to Brian. She hailed a cab and reached the hospital in fifteen minutes. She dashed to the reception.
“Excuse me! Brian Josh was admitted yesterday night. I am a friend of his.” She spoke hurriedly.
“First floor. Intensive Care Unit.” The receptionist replied.
“Thank you.” Diya hurried to the elevator and squeezed herself between people who were travelling to the top floors.
As soon as she rushed out to the first floor, she found a gang of four waiting outside the ICU. She walked towards them.
“Hey, I am Diya Rai. A friend of Brian Josh.” She extended her hand to the only woman in the gang.
“I am Maria. I spoke to you on the phone. We were partying nearby Quest Grand Hotel yesterday night, when this lad popped out of nowhere. He was in some kind of trance. He didn’t even notice the speeding car. It was five minutes later we realized that he was hit by the car. We called up an ambulance and admitted him here. He just had consciousness to say his name before he went blank. We tried various patterns in his phone, but couldn’t get it unlocked. So we took turns in attending to him throughout the night. Thank God that you called in the morning.”
“Oh my God!” Diya screamed and plopped down on a chair beside her, with her hands on her head.
“I am sorry, Diya. Can I get you some water?” Maria asked, seating herself in another chair.
“No, I am fine, thank you. Wha – what did the doctors say?” Diya choked back tears.
“A major head injury, but not much blood loss. They have operated on him and kept him under observation. He is still unconscious.”
“Okay. Thank you so much, everyone.” Diya addressed to the group at large.
“That’s okay, Diya. Shall we leave now? We have to get to work.”
“Fine, Maria. Thank you so much.”
Maria and the gang left after providing their contact details to Diya. Diya stoop up and moved towards the ICU. She saw through the see-through glass. Brian was fitted with various tubes and equipment. A doctor was registering an injection in his shoulder. Diya turned away, as she couldn’t bear seeing Brian in that condition. She fished out her mobile phone and placed a call to Mike and Hannah. She briefed them the details and asked them to come over if possible.
Just then the doctor came out. He happened to be in his 40s and immediately smiled at her as soon as he saw her.
“Hi, I am Dr. Charles Wanton. And you are?”
“Diya Rai.” She exchanged a warm handshake with him.
“There’s nothing to worry about, Diya. He is perfectly fine. We operated on his head injury. All he needs is rest and medicines which we give him. You can visit him after half-an-hour. I hope he will regain consciousness after that.”
“Thank you so much, doctor.” Diya blinked back tears and smiled at him weakly.
“Are you his spouse?”
“No. I am just a friend of his.”
“Okay, you need to sign in the ledger. A nurse will meet you in another five minutes.”
With those words, Charles walked away. As said by him, a young-looking nurse met her and asked her to fill up her details in the ledger. Diya had reminisces of her previous visit to a hospital in Bangalore, where she had gone to identify Brian. She filled the details and signed it. The nurse thanked her and left her alone. Left to her thoughts, Diya pondered on the day’s happenings.
‘What would have happened if Brian had met with a serious accident? What would have happened if he wasn’t alive by now? I would be forever regretful of not getting back with him and living with him to create memories. Oh my God!’ Diya thought and a fresh set of tears streamed down from her eyes.
After half-an-hour, Diya asked a nearby nurse whether she can visit Brian in the ICU. She answered in the affirmative. Diya then slowly opened the door to the ICU and walked towards the Brian. He was stirring back to consciousness. Diya heaved a sigh of relief and rushed to him.
“Brian! Wake up! It’s me. Diya.” She cried in a whispery tone.
Brian flickered his eyes and woke up. He didn’t look at Diya. He registered his surroundings first and then slowly looked at her.
“Di – ya.” He spoke softly, as there was a wound at the corner of his mouth.
“Brian! How are you feeling now? Is it painful?”
“Damn painful, Diya. I should have been ca – careful.”
“You need to rest, Brian. Sleep for sometime. I’ll come back later. You have difficulty in speaking, too.”
“Diya, that’s okay. I can manage.” Brian reassured her.
“Brian, listen to me. I’ll talk to you later. I have to go and see what should be done now. Sleep well. I’ll come back with Mike and Hannah. We’ll then talk. Okay?”
Brian nodded meekly. There was a finality in Diya’s tone which made him obey her.
Diya moved out of the ICU. She burst into tears once she was outside. She didn’t know why she was crying. Suddenly she felt two pairs of hands on her shoulders, comforting her. Mike and Hannah had arrived.
*****
“The nurse told me that the total cost is 1800 Australian dollars, which equals to 90,000 rupees in Indian currency.” Hannah put forth.
“Okay, I’ll arrange for it.” Diya replied.
“Do you have money with you, Diya? We can help you if you want.” It was Mike.
“No. I have enough money in my account. I can pay for the costs.”
Then Diya went to the reception to pay the bill. She had her International Debit Card with her and the payment was rather easy.
“Don’t you think you should inform his mom?” Hannah asked, once Diya returned to the first floor.
“I don’t think that will be a good idea. Brian will not want it.” Diya replied gloomily.
“Okay, we can ask him afterwards.”
After an hour or so, the trio was informed that Brian would be shifted to an air-conditioned ward. The shifting took place within minutes and they were allowed to be beside him. Brian woke up after sometime and beamed at them.
“Hey, guys.” He said in a soft tone.
“Promise me you’ll be more careful the next time and then we can continue to be friends.” Mike replied.
“Arey, I promise you. I won’t be absent-minded hereafter.” His gaze turned towards Diya.
“What were you thinking while crossing the road?” She asked blatantly.
“I – I was thinking about you.”
“Thinking about me? I told you that I will surely meet you the next day. Were you apprehensive?”
“No. I knew that you’d meet me, but I was just thinking about you. It made me feel better. Only I didn’t notice the car.”
“You wait. You get better and I’ll throw a brick at you.” Diya mocked.
“I’ll be happy to get hit by you, my dear.” Brian replied lovingly.
“Can we leave you guys alone? I think you need some time to patch things up.” Mike put forth.
Before Diya could refuse, the duo left the ward. Diya turned towards Brian and moved closer to him. He moved aside to make place for her. She sat on the bed and held his right hand which was devoid of the glucose drips.
“How are you feeling now?” She asked him.
“Better. When you are near me, everything is better, Diya.”
“So cheesy, Brian. Since when did you become a corny guy?”
“I don’t know. Maybe falling in love with you has taught me to be cheesy.”
“Brian, I am really sorry. I should have spoken something consoling to you, instead of asking you time to come to a decision.”
“So, you think that made me get into this accident?”
“Maybe. I am regretting it.”
A tear glistened at the corner of Brian’s right eye. Diya wiped it away immediately.
“Is my mobile phone with you?”
“Yes, I have it.” Diya fished out his mobile phone and found that the charge was intact.
Brian took it from her and unlocked it. He went to the Videos folder and clicked on a video.
“You know, I am pretty good at singing. When you were away from me, I sang this song and recorded a video for you.”
He clicked on the Play button and thrust the mobile into Diya’s hand.
“Tu safar mera, hai tu hi meri manzil
Tere bina guzaara, ae dil hai mushkil…”
Within minutes into the song, Diya was mesmerized and tears flowed down from her eyes. Brian’s honeyed voice was so soul-stirring, that she fervently wished that she could have been with him all the time. As the song finished, she could not find her voice for a few minutes.
“Br – Brian, I – I don’t know what to speak…”
“Don’t speak. Just revel in the moment.” Brian replied softly, looking straight into her eyes.
“Brian, I love you.” Diya broke down.
With whatever energy he could muster, he pulled her towards him and embraced her.
“I love you too, Diya. I have been wanting to tell this to you for months. For years, actually.” His voice turned raspy.
“I am sorry. I have hurt you too much, intentionally.” Diya apologized.
Brian just stroked her tresses and placed a kiss on her forehead.
“Arrgghhh! My wound stings.”
Diya straightened up and punched him gently on his chest. “I didn’t ask for the kiss.” She chuckled. Brian, too, joined in the laughter and embraced her again.
“I am thankful for getting back with you, Diya. I missed our days.”
“We’ll have more days, Brian. Don’t worry. Let’s enjoy our stay in Melbourne till the end of this month.”
“What will we do after reaching Bangalore?”
“Maybe I’ll move in with you.”
“What will you tell your parents?” Brian asked, shocked.
“I have lots to explain to them. Especially to my mom. She’s gonna learn a lesson for her lifetime.”
“You’re so vengeful on her. Why so?”
“She’s acting like a perfect stupid, Brian. I don’t know what to do with her. Maybe moving in with you would set everything straight.”
“Don’t be too harsh on her. After all, she is your mother.”
“Yeah, she is my mother, but she should understand my feelings, too. Speaking of mother, shall I call up your mom and tell about your accident?”
“Arey, no, I’ll tell her after reaching Bangalore or when I go to Gurgaon. She’ll panic if I tell now and she’d want me to come home immediately.”
“Okay, then we can reserve that for later.”
Brian smiled at her and said, “Things are falling into place, Diya. I am gonna love my life.”
“I am already loving it. And there’s gonna be a big change. I have been single till today and now I am eager to know how being committed would feel.”
“It’s an awesome feeling, Diya, especially when you are with the right person. Anyway, you have had sex, so it’s not gonna be a big experience.” Brian chortled.
“Oh my God! You are pathetic, Brian.” Diya yelled at him, rather jovially.
She stoop up from the bed and moved towards the window. She opened it a little and let the cool breeze inside. She heaved a contented sigh.
‘Life is beautiful.’ She thought.
“By the way, what about my medical expenses?” Brian asked her.
“It has been attended to, my dear Satan.”
“What? You paid my bills? You can’t do that!”
“Why? What if I say that a husband’s medical bills can be paid by his wife?” Diya winked at him.
Brian beamed at her. He was at a loss for words. It felt good to be with her.

Diya Rai – Karan and Hannah
Diya woke up to warm rays of sun falling on her face. She flailed the bed covers away and stood up with a spring in her step. Yes, she was feeling contented. Brian’s confession was all that she needed to bring the zeal back in her life. She tied her hair into a bun and searched for her phone which she had sleepily thrown away the previous night. She found it on the edge of the bed, where her legs would have easily kicked it away. Picking it up, she opened the Facebook app. She went to Brian’s profile and unblocked him. She even went on to tag him in one of her previous photos. She then unblocked his number via Truecaller and added him on WhatsApp again. It was then that she noticed Karan’s display picture. Staring straight at her was a selfie of Karan and Hannah together. She checked Hannah’s chat and even she had changed her display picture similar to Karan. ‘What’s going on?’ Diya thought and immediately typed a message to Karan.
Diya: Oiii, what’s going on between you and Hannah?
Luckily, Karan was online. He smiled on seeing Diya’s message and replied.
Karan: Nothing’s on. Just wandering around.
Diya: Liar! How is that that you both change your dp at the same time?
Karan: Oh, is it? I didn’t check, yaar. Seriously.
Diya: Liar! How many lies are you going to weave? Tell me, what’s going on? As your friend, I have the rights to know.
Karan: Yeah, okay. The game is up. We are kinda dating. Haven’t thought about a serious relationship as of now.
Diya: Wow! I mean, this is really wow, Karan. She is such a sweet person. Hope you both end up together.
Karan: Let’s wish for that to happen.
Diya: I am sooo happy for you, Karan. Never thought that a change would come over you.
Karan: Life has to move on, Diya. I realized it after meeting Hannah. Thanks to you, actually. Without your introduction, we wouldn’t have known each other.
Diya: I feel so proud of myself now. Okay, it’s time for me to prod Hannah now. I’ll be talking to her in office. Meet you in the evening.
Karan: Hey, Diya, I am leaving today.
Diya: Leaving? What does that mean?
Karan: Sorry, I am too late in informing you. I am going back to Bangalore today. But I can meet you guys in the evening.
Diya: Holy cow! You never told me?
Karan: Sorry, Diya. I was kinda busy going out Hannah and other stuff.
Diya: Okay, okay, I understand, but what about Hannah? Don’t tell me you guys are going to be in a long-distance relationship.
Karan: Of course, what else can we do? Anyhow, I’ll try whether I can get a permanent posting in Australia.
Diya: Yeah, do that first.
Karan: Okay, get going, Diya. Will meet you in the evening.
Diya: Okay, bye.
Diya went offline. ‘Why didn’t Karan tell me about his relationship and about his leaving? Did he think I would feel bad?’ She wondered.
*****
“Hannah, come over to my cabin. Need to talk something about the project.” Diya called Hannah.
“Yeah, coming.” Hannah stood up and went over to the coffee-maker to bring two coffees.
“Thank you.” Diya said, as Hannah placed a steaming cup of coffee on her table. She sat beside her and looked at Diya’s progress in the assignment.
“That’s a good write-up, Diya. Never knew you could blend so well with our culture.” Hannah said.
“Thank you, Hannah. By the way, why do you look pale?”
“Me? I – I don’t know. I don’t think so I look pale.”
“Don’t mince words, Hannah. I know what’s going on. I chatted with Karan today.”
“You did? Thank God! I was about to tell you everything and I was so scared.”
“Ha ha ha. Chill, girl!” Diya held Hannah’s hand and comforted her.
“Okay, so, what do you think about us?”
“You are perfect for each other. Do keep in touch with him. He said he’ll try for a permanent posting in Melbourne.”
“That’s so sweet of him. I like him so much.”
“You are blushing, girl.”
“I am so obvious, right? Okay, tell me, what about you and Mike?”
“Hey, we are just friends. Yeah, we went out on a date, but we didn’t think about getting into a relationship. Also, I am thinking of giving Brian a chance.”
“Brian? Where did Brian come into all this?”
“Oh, I didn’t tell you, right?”
With that, Diya plunged into a narration of her flashback. Hannah’s jaw had dropped halfway through the story. After Diya finished it, she began shooting questions.
“Oh my God! You never told me this. Are you really giving him a second chance?”
“Yes, of course. Though I was skeptical about it, I accepted it, after he said that second chances can work miracles. I do believe him to some extent.”
“That’s good, Diya. What do you feel about him right now?”
“I have always loved him, Hannah. But I got used to a life without him. I started loving my single life again. That’s why I am not able to get back with him immediately.”
“Yes, take your own time and come to a wise conclusion.”
“Thank you for listening to me, Hannah. You are the first one to know about this. I didn’t even tell Karan.”
“Will you tell to Mike?”
“Of course, he has the right to know. I’ll tell him today.”
Hannah hugged Diya and went back to her place.
*****
That evening the gang met at Nando’s, yet another Chicken restaurant nearby the Star Observation Wheel. They were chatting amicably over some Flame Grilled Peri Peri Chicken, Garlic Bread, and French Fries. Diya had already met Mike in Docklands Park and told her decision to him. He had wholeheartedly accepted the fact that she was going to give Brian a second chance and that she wasn’t going to go on any more dates with him.
“That’s okay, Diya. I knew that something was up, when you hadn’t replied to my messages. Anyway, this seems good to me. You have to give him a second chance. Well, if it doesn’t work out, you can always date me.” Mike had finished it with a wink.
“Ha ha ha. Mike, you are too jovial. Get serious and find a girl for yourself.” Diya had replied.
“I will, when the right time comes.”
Karan patted on Diya’s shoulder. “Daydreaming, eh?” He asked her.
“Oops! I just wandered off.”
“Daydreaming is her favourite hobby.” Brian piped him. Diya made faces at him.
“When did you guys get back on talking terms?” Karan questioned, looking straight at Diya.
“Yesterday.” Diya replied quietly.
Karan looked at her quizzically, to which Diya replied in a whisper, “I’ll tell you later.”
“Okay, guys, it’s time for me to start my farewell speech.” Karan spoke to everyone.
“I wish you had stayed for some more time.” Hannah said.
“Don’t worry. I’ll try for a permanent posting in Melbourne.” He reassured her and held her hands.
“So, guys, I had lots of fun with you all. I never thought my Melbourne trip would be this memorable. I am really sad that I have to leave so soon. Hope you guys enjoy your days here. Soon, Diya and Brian would leave. Then, Mike and Hannah will go about their daily lives. Let’s make this evening as memorable as possible.”
With those words, Karan engaged the gang in a lively reminiscence of their previous week. He then clicked groupfies with them and posted them on his social media profiles. They then travelled to the airport in a bus. As they reached the ‘Departure’ terminal, Karan hugged Hannah and kissed her on both her cheeks.
“I’ll miss you.” He whispered to her.
“I’ll miss you too.” Hannah choked on her tears.
He hugged Brian and Mike simultaneously. He then looked at Diya.
“I – I need to have a word with you privately, Diya.”
“Sure.” Diya replied, confusion dancing on her face. The others left them alone.
“Diya, though I love Hannah, I have always had a soft corner for you. Some things don’t die. It’s the same for my love. My love for you the second time was true and it still stays true. Always remember, whatever happens to you, I’ll be always there for you. You can always trust me as a best friend. You’ll always stay in my heart. Keep in touch, okay?”
Diya was taken aback at Karan’s words. She couldn’t digest the fact that he still loved her somewhere deep in his heart.
“I am at a loss for words, Karan. You are unpredictable. Anyhow, I am thinking of giving Brian a second chance. He confessed to me how much he loved me. I have asked him for some time.”
“That’s awesome, Diya. Take the right decision.”
“I will.”
“Okay, I’ll leave now. Take care.”
“Take care, you too.”
He then waved to the others and entered the terminal. Diya joined them and waved back to him.
“What was that about?” Brian asked her.
“Just a few secrets between best friends.” She winked at him. He nudged her elbow lovingly.
“Stop it, Brian. I am not your girlfriend yet.”
Brian suppressed a smile.
“Okay, let’s move.” Mike announced. The gang took a return bus to Docklands and alighted at their respective places. Brian requested Diya to walk her home, to which she readily agreed.
“It was fun having Karan around. I would get bored now.” He said.
“When did the feisty traveller get bored of being alone?”
“I don’t know. Maybe the feisty traveller is desperately craving for company.”
“You can drop in at my workplace, whenever you wish.”
“Huh? Are you sure?”
“Damn sure. Also, we can meet in the evenings.”
“Yeah. We can also meet without Hannah and Mike.”
Diya glared at him, but a grin played on her lips.
“You are so smart, Brian. Okay, we will meet without Hannah and Mike.”
“Ufff! I am longing to be with you again. All those Coffee Exotica memories are coming back to me.”
“Even I’d love to spend time with you, Brian. It’s been a long time since we have spoken well.”
“Hmmm, have you said about our reunion to Mahima and Ronnie?”
“Not yet. But Mahima might have noticed that I have unblocked you from Facebook and even tagged you in the photos. I think she’s waiting for me to tell the news. I’ll call her after sometime and tell her.”
“Okay, we have reached. Have a good night, Diya.” He hugged her gently.
“Good night, Brian.” She hugged him back and released him immediately. She still wasn’t ready to get intimate with him.
As soon as she got into the elevator, Brian jogged back to his hotel. He was so happy that he didn’t notice the celebration that was going around in the streets. And he also didn’t notice a speeding car that was fast approaching him.
Only when he fell to the ground and his head hit the corner of a pavement did he realize that he was absentminded.

Diya Rai – Brian’s Challenge
Before Diya could scream, Brian placed a hand over her mouth and shushed her.
“Shhhh! Don’t shriek as if I you have seen a robber.” He chided her.
Diya removed his hand with such force, that her nails scratched on his tender skin.
“Aaarrghhh! You’re hurting me, Diya.”
“Then, what do you think I should do?”
“Maybe, a hug or kiss.”
Diya delivered a sharp clout across his cheek.
“This will serve you, Brian. Who do you think you are? Why the hell did you call me when I was on a date?”
“On a date?” Brian held his left cheek and spoke through clenched teeth.
“Yes, I was on a date with Mike and you spoiled it by calling me.”
“I never knew that you were on a date. I just thought you were hanging out with him.” His tone was rather sarcastic.
“Why should I hang out with him exclusively? I would have done by that calling all of you and hanging out together.”
“Shit! I am sorry, Diya.”
“Don’t put on a show, Brian. You knew that I was on a date with him, yet you called me to spoil my day.”
“I didn’t want to spoil your day. I was about to talk to you something else. But-“
“What else have you got to talk to me?”
“Something important. It’s about my feelings.”
“Your feelings? I don’t give a damn about your feelings.”
“That’s okay. But I want to make sure that you know about them. I felt frustrated when I came to know that you have gone out with Mike. That’s why I acted stupidly.”
“At least you realize that you were being stupid.”
“I am sorry, Diya. I really am.”
Diya heaved a sigh and replied, “Okay, what do you want from me?”
“Diya, can we relax and speak? Can we go to your room, if you permit?”
Diya felt apprehensive for a moment. She had flashes of what happened when they were alone in a room the last time.
“I won’t do anything. Promise. I am just going to talk to you.” He reassured her.
Diya opened her apartment and let him inside. After taking a sip from her water bottle, she settled down on the bed and signalled Brian to sit on the couch.
“Thank you.” Brian muttered and took his seat.
“Okay, tell me what do you want?”
“Diya, I have to confess something to you. You know, I fell in love with you at first sight.”
“What?” Diya spat out.
“Yes, in Carmel College. It was love at first sight for me. But I had lots of commitments and I was also a traveller, which made things worse for me. I never had a chance to come back to the college and propose to you. I didn’t even search for you in Orkut. I just believed in destiny and moved on. Four years passed by. I went on a trip to Jaipur-Jodhpur-Udaipur, where I acted as a tour guide. There I met Monali. Within a week’s time, she fell head over heels in love with me. She was a sweet girl. I couldn’t refuse her. We started going out after that. She even moved to Bangalore for my sake. Then she started preparing for her arrears exams. When I asked whether I can pay for her exams, she told me that she was working in a footwear shop in the evenings and she was able to pay for her exams. I believed her too much. Meanwhile, we had regular fights, as she had a dominating personality. She wanted me to change my lifestyle. I felt stressed due to the poisonous relationship I was in. That’s when I met you in The Hindu Literature Fest…”
“Wait! But you acted as if you didn’t know me. Why did you do that?”
“I didn’t want you to know that I remembered you. Since I had a girlfriend, I was afraid to confess that I had already fallen in love with you. As soon as I met you again, all the memories of that particular day came back to me. Though I longed for your friendship, I kept away from you. I didn’t even ask your phone number. But it was draining me of all the energy I had. There was Monali, too, who was pestering me with her nagging attitude. That’s why I didn’t take care of myself and I had a case of dehydration. After you identified me in the hospital, I thought I should not keep away from you any longer. I thought I should become your best friend.”
“Yeah, right. So, our friendship bloomed after that. We were hanging out together, but we never delved into our personal issues. And you also didn’t care to tell me that you had a girlfriend.” Diya glared at him.
“I am sorry, Diya. I thought I could break up with Monali and continue my friendship with you. I made hell lot of plans to get close to you. And that opportunity came when we visited Ooty. I was too reluctant to stay in a room with you, but I had no other choice. We were budget travellers. I informed Monali that I am going to Ooty with you and we had a huge row regarding that. I thought she would break up with me, instead she said she’d meet me in Ooty. My love for you deepened during the trip. I didn’t know what I was doing, when I had sex with you. I was not myself at that time. I forgot about Monali. Just after our love-making session, she called me to inform that she will visit me the next day. I was terrified. I didn’t know how to manage the situation. That’s why I acted indifferently the next day. And I – I had no other choice. I told you the truth and broke your heart. I – I am really sorry, Diya.” Brian’s voice broke and his eyes were brimming with tears.
Even Diya was crying silently. She couldn’t look into his eyes. Since she was silent, Brian continued, “I thought I could break up with Monali and come back to you. But it was too late. You left me and you blocked me from everything. It was really agonizing. However, God sent you back to me. You involved yourself in Mr. Sundarnathan’s case and found out Monali was a cheat all the time. I realized my blunder at that moment. I was also happy that God had gifted me the best chance to break up with her. And hence, I ended my relationship with her and tried to get back to you, but I realized that I was long gone from your life. I moved on with my boring life, till I felt that I should take a break and go somewhere abroad. And that’s why I am here. Trust me, I never expected to find you here. I think this is destiny, Diya.” Brian finished his rigmarole and took a sip from the water bottle kept on the teapoy.
Diya wiped her tears and looked straight into his eyes, “And how am I supposed to believe you, Brian? What if this is a tale spun by you to patch things up?”
“I know you believe me. I haven’t spoken like this to anyone, Diya. I am really sorry to have broken your heart. I am ready to do anything to bring things to normalcy. Tell me what should I do?”
“I – I don’t know, Brian. Th – this confession is a blow to me. I never knew that you were in love with me all the time. But how could you hurt me blatantly, when you knew that you were in love with me?”
“I didn’t have a choice, Diya. I thought I could rectify things later.”
“Okay, what am I supposed to do now?”
“Forgive me, Diya.”
“I have already forgiven you. What else should I do?”
“Can we be friends again?”
“Friends? I have never seen you as a friend. You were more than that.”
“Okay. Can we then – er – get into a relationship?”
“Is this how you propose to a girl?”
“Er – no, this is not a proposal. It’s a – uh – I don’t know.”
“Look, Brian, I need some time. Yes, I was crazily in love with you, but those days are over. I got busy with my life and I moved on. I really love my single life again. I got this exciting Australian writing assignment and I am totally into it. I have also met some amazing people over here. Hannah and Mike. I want to spend more time with them and get to know their culture better. I don’t think I have time for love. And, also, I need some time to fall in love with you again.”
“Have you really fallen out of love, Diya?”
“I – I don’t know. I am heartbroken beyond words. I need time to clarify things and get back on track. Hope you can understand, Brian. I am enjoying this phase of my life now.”
“Are you considering going out with Mike again?”
“Maybe. I don’t know. I am comfortable with him. I don’t know whether I can take that forward.”
“Why don’t you put that on hold and give me a chance?” Brian asked eagerly.
“I’ll give you a chance, but you cannot deprive me of my friendship with Mike, Karan and Hannah. Okay?”
“Okay, I won’t do anything to your friendship with them.”
“Can I trust you, Brian? What if I end up in heartbreak again?”
“You won’t, Diya. You have to give a second chance to everyone you love. Second chances can work miracles. I promise you I won’t break your heart again.”
“Okay. But what if I don’t fall in love with you?”
A grin passed across Brian’s lips and he turned away from her to suppress it.
“What does that mean, Brian?”
“That means that you’ll surely fall in love with me.”
“How are you so sure?”
“I challenge you, Diya. There are two more weeks for your Australian trip to end. You’ll fall in love with me within that and you’ll be proud of it.”
“Is it? Okay, what’s the bet?”
“There’s no bet in love, Diya. I am sure of winning in my challenge.”
“Let’s see, Brian.” Diya flashed a wide smile.
“So, friends?” Brian extended his hand for a shake. Diya took it in hers and said, “Friends.”
“For now.” Brian winked at her.
“You want something to drink?” Diya ignored his work and changed the topic.
“No, that’s fine. I am leaving. I don’t want things to go awry.” Brian laughed. Diya chortled, too. She felt happier than before. Brian stood up from the couch and left the apartment after wishing her a good night.
Diya couldn’t fall asleep. Brian’s thoughts swirled over in her mind. She was confused, too. His out-of-the-blue confession had turned her world upside down.
‘Things are not going to be the same,’ she thought. Finally she fell asleep after an hour.

Diya Rai – Diya, Mike and Some Drama
Diya dressed herself in a high-neck pink cocktail dress and gave finishing touches to her make-up. Mike had promised to pick her up from her apartment. Picking up her stone embroidered pink clutch bag, she stepped out from her flat, after enabling the automatic lock system. As she travelled down the elevator, her mind wandered to thoughts about where Mike would probably take her. She didn’t have any high expectations. Even a quiet and peaceful walk through the Royal Botanic Gardens would suffice her. She came out of the elevator with a huge smile and was met by Mike in the reception.
“Hey, Diya.” He embraced her. Diya hugged back.
“You look good.” He commented. He was wearing a purple closed neck slim-fit t-shirt with black jeans. He had also spiked some of his hair in the front, which made him look stunning.
“Thank you. You look good, too.”
“Thank you. Shall we move?”
“Yeah, sure.”
“What about breakfast?”
“We can have it on our way, if you prefer.”
“You choose the restaurant, lady.”
Diya had a sudden idea to take him to the Indian restaurant where Karan and she had breakfasted together.
“Ummm, can I take you to Bhoj, an Indian restaurant? Would you taste Indian food?”
“I am game for it, Diya. By the way, I love Indian cuisine. I have tasted a few dishes and they are absolutely scrumptious.”
“Then, let’s go!” Diya locked her right arm with his left arm.
The duo walked till the restaurant and settled themselves in a corner table.
“You order, ma’am.” A waiter came up immediately and addressed Diya. Since he had already attended to her at the restaurant, he threw an acknowledging smile, which she returned.
“Diya, this is all Greek & Latin to me.” Mike declared, taking a look at the elaborate menu.
“Okay, I’ll order for you. We’d like to have some Keema Naan and Roti with Chicken Tikka Masala.”
“Okay, ma’am. Just give us ten minutes.” The waiter replied.
“Sure.”
“So, what did you tell at your office today?” Mike asked.
“I just told them I need an off, since I’d be going for sightseeing with a friend.”
“What did you tell Hannah?”
“Well, I told her the truth. She was happy that I was finally going out with an Australian.” Diya let out a small chuckle.
“Ha ha. That’s cool. What about Karan and Brian?”
“I told Karan, too. I didn’t have a chance to tell to Brian.”
Before her thoughts could wander to Brian, she popped the next question, “What about you? You must have cancelled some appointments today.”
“No. Actually I didn’t have any appointments today. That’s why I asked you whether you are free.”
“Okay, where are we heading to?”
“Diya, I didn’t have any definite plans, to be frank.” Mike looked down and averted Diya’s eyes.
“Hey, why would you feel bad for that? I like people who don’t have any preconceived plans. You know, things should happen just like that. In an instant.”
“What? Are you okay with it?”
“Damn okay with it, Mike. You can even decide now. I’ll tag along wherever you take me.”
“Cruising on Yarra River?”
“That’s awesome!”
“We can have a peaceful time and also we get to have good views of the city.”
“Then cruising it is.” Diya replied with a smile. Their dishes arrived and she began explaining about them.
“This tastes yummy. Keema Naan with Chicken Tikka Masala. Never tasted anything as delicious as this.” Mike gesticulated with his hands.
“I am glad you love them. If you come to India, you’ll get to taste better dishes than these.”
“I’ll surely come someday. Take me to your home. I wanna meet your parents and sister.”
“Are you serious?”
“Yeah, serious. I’ll also take you to my home. Only my mom is alive. Dad passed away a few years before. I have a brother who is settled in New Jersey, US.”
“Oh, I would love to meet your mom and have some strictly-women chat.”
“Ha ha ha. She is a jovial woman. I adore her.”
After finishing their dishes to the last morsel, Mike decided to pay the fare, ignoring Diya’s protests.
“I am taking you out today. So all the bills are on me. Okay?”
“Okay.” Diya replied reluctantly.
*****
It was 10.30 a.m, when Diya and Mike reached Southbank Promenade to collect their tickets for the cruise. It was a 2-hour cruise that would take them through the Docklands and River Gardens. After the formalities, they boarded the cruise boat and seated themselves. The boat took off at 11 a.m sharp.
“Thank God! The weather is pleasant today.” Mike commented.
“Yeah, I thought I’d need my coat and sweater. But, it’s kinda sunny and warm. I like this. Perfect for a peaceful cruise.”
“We get to see a lot of tourist spots in a single cruise. That’s why I brought you here.”
“I love it, Mike.”
They cruised through various important tourist spots. They even clicked pictures together. Exactly after 45 minutes, Diya’s mobile phone rang. She attended the call, even though it was an unknown number.
“Hey, Diya. What’s up? Heard that you are going out with Mike today.”
Diya felt anger seething through her nerves.
“Brian! What do you want?” She almost whispered.
“I need you, Diya. What made you go out with Mike today? How did you accept his invite?”
“That’s none of your business.”
“Of course, it’s my business. You are refusing me, but you are going out with some random guy whom you met only a week ago.”
“He’s not a random guy. He’s my best friend. I know well about him. You can keep your mouth shut.”
“Are you dating him?”
“What if I date him? What does that have to do with you?”
“I care about you, Diya. I just can’t leave you alone like that.”
“Jealous, eh?”
“Yeah, you can say like that, too.”
“How the hell did you get hold of my Australian number?”
“I pestered Karan. He had no choice. I promised him I won’t torture you.”
“Shit! Why can’t you just keep quiet? Look, it’s my right to decide who I should be going out with. You need not interfere in my decisions.”
“I am not interfering. I am just-“
“Disturbing?”
“What?”
“Are you disturbing me? If so, it’s a bad attempt, Brian. Neither will I get bogged down by your nasty remarks nor will I patch up with you. I am way ahead of you.”
“Oh! Is that so?”
“Yeah. Stay out of my life.”
“Fine.”
Brian ended the call abruptly. Diya heaved a huge sigh and turned to face Mike. He wore a confused look.
“What happened, Diya? Any problem?”
“No, it’s just-“
“I heard Brian’s name. Anything going on between you both?”
“Hey, nothing’s on. Chill, Mike. It’s all in the past.”
“You can tell me, if you wish. As your friend, I would like to know everything about you.”
“It’s a long story.”
“I love stories, Diya. Anyway, it’s a long cruise. We stop only for the tourist spots. Meanwhile, you can tell me your story.”
Diya’s apprehension left her at that moment. She began telling him how she was a stubborn girl who was against love and marriage. She then went on to tell how she had met Brian, how friendship blossomed between them, how she had fallen in love with him, and how he had broken her heart. Mike listened to her patiently and even held her hands when she felt driven to tears.
“I am sorry, Mike. I am spoiling our day together.”
“No, that’s okay, Diya. You are not spoiling it. You are making it better by opening up. It’s good to vent out your frustration.”
“Thank you for listening, Mike. Usually I don’t speak about these things much. But Brian’s reappearance has made things worse.”
“Yeah, I can sense that. Well, I am here to help you. We can hang out together and dump all our sorrows by going out. Okay?”
“Okay. I am game for it.”
Diya wiped her tears with her handkerchief and smiled at him, feeling lighter than ever.
The next half an hour they spent in silence, just gazing at the scenery and stopping for some tourist spots. However, when bad things are supposed to happen, they will happen, no matter whatever caution you take. Diya’s mobile phone rang again. She smirked and picked it up, hoping to see Brian’s number. But it was a call from India.
“Hello.”
“Diya beta, how are you?” It was Mamta Rai.
“Ma, I am fine. How are you?”
“I am good, too.”
“How’s Papa and Anjali?”
“Both are fine.”
“How come you are calling me all of a sudden?”
“I just wanted to talk to you, beta.”
“About what?”
“Well, don’t get tensed, okay?”
“That depends on what you are going to talk to me.”
“Okay, listen. There’s a very good marriage proposal. His name is Sankalp. You know, he works in Australia only. Sydney it is. After marriage, you can settle with him there. Your horoscopes match perfectly. And you-“
“Ma, can you shut up?!” Diya shook with anger.
“What, beta? Why are you speaking like that to me?”
“Ma, it’s high time you shut up about this marriage thing. I thought you are such a modern mom and you’ll understand my feelings. But you are toxic, Ma. You know, marriage is also one of the reasons on taking up this Australia assignment. I wanted to escape from your repeated taunts. Why can’t you just let me be? I said I want to stay single. I’ll get married when I feel like it. Till then, please leave me alone!” Diya hollered. Her co-passengers in the cruise boat turned around and looked at her.
“Diya, how can you speak like this? I am your mom. Remember that.”
“Yeah, you are my mom. And that’s why I have the right to speak whatever is in my mind. Do you understand?”
“Look, if you don’t listen to me, I am going to disown you.”
“Are you threatening me, Ma? Fine, you can disown me. I don’t have any qualms about it. After I return to India, I’ll stay with Mahima till she gets married. Then I’ll buy my own house and move in. It’s better to stay that way, than being with you, Ma.”
“Diya, how could you?” Mamta Rai’s voice broke and she began shedding tears.
“Ma, the problem lies with you. You have never even tried to understand me properly. What do you know about me? My best friends know me better than you. You need not cry for this. You need not disown me. I’ll just leave the house after I return to India. Then you can be peaceful. Forget that I was ever born to you.”
“Don’t be so rude, Diya. Please.” Mamta was still crying.
“I will stop being rude, only when you stop being such a pain, Ma.”
But all Diya could listen was the engaged tone. Mamta had hung up.
“Diya, are you okay?” Michael asked slowly.
“Yeah, I – I am okay, Mike. It’s just my mom. She has turned mental. She is pressurizing me into getting married to the person whom she chooses.”
“That’s mad, Diya. You stay true to your heart. Your life is yours. No one has the right to decide what is good for you.”
“Thank you, Mike. At least you can understand me.”
“Well, you are so worked up. Can I get you some coffee?”
“Yeah, that would make me feel better.”
Mike moved to the on-board cafe to get two coffees. Meanwhile, Diya pondered on the day’s happenings. She felt more sick than before, though Mike desperately tried to make her smile.
“The coffee is really good, Mike. I can feel my spirits coming back. And I am really sorry. I screwed up our date.”
“You did not, Diya. I repeat. You did not. These things happen.”
“I won’t bring my phone next time. Maybe that would ease things.”
“You can bring your phone. Turn it off or turn on the airplane mode. No one will disturb you then.”
“Yeah, I should probably do that.”
For the last half-an-hour of the cruise, they talked about positive things and whiled away the time by clicking more pictures.
“You look lovely in the photos, Diya.”
Diya blushed from cheek to cheek. She did not reply a thank you, since she’d said too many thank yous for the day.
They had lunch at a posh lakeside restaurant and spent the evening by taking a walk through the streets of Docklands. Diya felt good by the end of the day.
“You are my saviour, Mike. I don’t know what I would do without you.”
“Where will I go? I will stay by your side, always.”
Diya hugged him in response and he returned the hug. He then walked her home and left for his place by bus. Diya reached her flat. As she was opening it, she felt a hand on her shoulder. A chill ran down her spine, as she didn’t know anyone at her apartments.
She spun around to see who it was.
