If you had met me before this week, you’d have thought I was one of the most responsible, play-it-safe human beings on the planet. You’d have assumed someone juggling three jobs and managing her own business wouldn’t even have the time to get involved in messy relationships.
That’s what I thought, too.
I was wrong.
This week, I met Boston. He wears the ripped jeans, messy hair, and adorable look like he was born that way. I’m game for some harmless flirting, maybe a little more, and he definitely doesn’t have any objections. Why deny the obvious spark we have?
Because that’s all it is: a spark. The sooner I can enjoy a taste of Boston’s lean, chiseled body, the sooner this silly infatuation of mine will be over.
Then I’ll be safe.
Except that kissing Boston doesn’t snuff out that spark. Not the first time, or the second, or the third.
Instead of satisfying my curiosity, I want to know about him: why he’s dropped everything to help out his family, why he has a way of calming tense situations down, why I can’t get enough of his smile.
Why he’s making me question everything I thought I wanted.

Sara knew Cody was up for making her spying ex-boyfriend jealous. What she didn't count on was wanting more from him than their carefully timed, on-camera action...
Even though I visit Last Call to see my grandparents every year, this time feels different. Maybe it’s because of Nan's Alzheimer's. Or because I’m trying to keep the disaster of my last relationship firmly in the past where it belongs, though my ex, Roger, makes that difficult when he’s tracking my every move.
It could also be the fact that Cody, the local playboy-turned-firefighter, has been helping my grandparents with chores on their farm, and it’s… distracting. In a welcome way. I am not a girl who turns down help, especially when it’s hot, blond, and standing in my doorway.
With Cody happy to help me prove my creepy ex has bugged my laptop, he and I decide to put on a not-safe-for-work show. Or three. Just enough teasing to get a reaction—recorded evidence that Roger’s broken the law.
I know. I know. It seems like a good idea... At first.
Beyond our mutual lapse in judgment, Cody’s actually more than just a really sexy friend with benefits. He’s a good friend, period. He knows what it’s like to be alone, to have to re-learn how to trust other people.
People like me. Cody is someone who wouldn’t let anyone use me like I’ve been using him.

I’m normally the calmest one in the room, no matter what. Living in rural Virginia where nature is always close by is a huge part of that, and I can’t help but feel lucky…even if I’m still fantasizing about my middle-school crush, Leland, while dating another man.
Except my luck seems to change when I catch my boyfriend in the act of cheating. The other woman? My mother.
It isn’t the worst thing she’s done this year, either.
Okay, who am I kidding? My life is a dumpster fire. The ex is a dud and possibly a dealer. My mother is the town tramp. One of my newest hobbies? Day-drinking. And I have a thing for Deputy Leland, who I secretly hope will pull me over and do a thorough body search. Instead, he’s the one who shows up each time the pieces of my life seem to fall further apart.
I have to stay away from Leland, for my family’s sake and for his own damn good.

Moving home to Virginia in defeat after my music career in New Orleans tanked isn’t the worst thing that’s happened to me in the past year. It isn’t even the worst thing to happen to me in the past month.
No, that honor is reserved for discovering that half of the duplex my parents are leasing to me now belongs to a tall, dark-blond Viking. The modern kind who rides a bike, smells of sunshine and sex in the woods, and refuses to stop flirting with me.
I’m glad I have your sympathy.
Living next to Jinx wouldn’t be so terrible if my life hadn’t just fallen apart at the seams. After the accident, I may never play an instrument well again. I don’t need Jinx—or his adorable son—messing with my head before I figure out how to salvage what’s left of my career.
Luckily for me, Jinx is determined to skip my head and conquer my body first, then move on to my heart...
