When he wakes up in a hospital bed, in a military base that shouldn’t exist, he has a whole leg and a furious sister to deal with.
Drake is sworn to keep a secret he doesn’t understand, but whatever pulled him out of the flood, isn’t quite done with him yet, because even if you leave nothing but footprints, the things that walk the forest can still follow you home.


Excerpt 31


“So you are telling me we are missing a three ton alien?” Demanded a voice in nearly a shriek.
The pasty faced man in a three piece pinstriped suit stared flabbergasted at the one star general in front of him. General Hall sighed and rubbed his wrinkled forehead tiredly. The old air conditioner that took up the majority of his window labored loudly but seemed to only produce hot air.
“Bard is not ‘missing’ Senator,” he began patiently.
“He did not show up in the roll call when I arrived for a planned meeting!” the senator spluttered. “You do not know where he is. That counts as missing in my book!”
“He was out roaming in the designated area when his path home was cut off by the National Park search and rescue party,” the general patiently explained. “It has happened before. It will probably happen again. We have protocols for this situation.”
“So you just let them wander willy-nilly over public land any time they want to?” the senator demanded. “This right after he was exposed to a civilian?”
“No Sir! We do not.”
The words were spoken calmly but there was a bite to them that had not been there before. The old man stood firmly and stepped out from behind the desk to face the politician directly.
“The treaty we have with the visitors is plain as day on where and when they are allowed to explore or recreate,” he growled in a voice that had cowed hundreds of warriors in its day. “Bard is frankly the only one who has taken advantage of it in decades. I assure you that he is somewhere within the confines of the Park. That we have not heard from him is entirely due to him following the protocols as written.”
The raw power that the old general exuded washed against the younger man and left him more than a bit nervous.
“Well, if as you say he is following protocol-” the senator muttered.
“He is,” the general stated.
“Then there should be no problem,” the senator offered.
“No, there will not,” the general confirmed.

Specialist Feathering ceased speaking and blinked in annoyance at the private who was shifting his paws uneasily on the plating of the deck craning his head around. The youngster, still bright green around his scutes, was clearly looking up and down the corridor for something that had caught his attention.
“My most sincere apologies if the growth of the foodstuffs for this entire sector is boring you,” Specialist Feathering said. “Is there something else that is a higher priority?”
The private jerked his head back to Specialist Feathering and clicked his teeth together in embarrassment.
“So sorry! But sir...Specialist...don’t you feel that?” the private asked, spreading his paw pads over the deck plating, his inner eyelids blinking with real distress.
With a sigh Specialist Feathering set his datapad down and spread his paws on the plating. Sure enough the kinetic conductive material carried an odd thumping rhythm. Specialist Feathering debated the used of explaining to yet another green-washed hatchling and decided against it. Instead he picked up his datapad, tucked it into his pack, and set off down the corridor with a beckoning wave of his tail. The private followed in obvious relief.
Not two turns down the corridor they came across the source of the odd rhythm. One Ranger Billy Bob Jones was moving down the corridor, twisting and flinging his body about in the strangest way.
“Oh!” the private spoke up suddenly, his eye alight with understanding. “The human is practicing the Undulate language in his spare time!”
The human in question stopped at the sound and leapt nearly a tail’s thickness into the air, releasing a startled yelp.
“No he was not,” Specialist Feathering said as the human came to a swaying stop, clutching his chest.
He saw the light of understanding dim to perplexed mulling in the private’s eyes.
“Ranger Billy Bob!” Specialist Feathering snapped. “Please explain your behavior to this green-washed scute-for-brains so we can actually get some grist over the mills today!”
The human’s face ripped into a lopsided ‘grin’ as he glanced between them.
“Just bopping out to the music,” he said.
“Bopping out?” the private asked, his tongue flicking out as if he was trying to taste the word.
“Dancing!” the human explained quickly.
“What music?” the private asked. “I thought our hearing was much in the same range but I did not perceive any sound other than your … feet?”
“Oh!” the human laughed and tapped the side of his head. “It’s all up here!”
There was a long moment of silence as the young private looked at the human in perplexity.
“You hare an implant for internal playback of music?” the private asked in hesitant tones.
“What? No!” Ranger Billy Bob exclaimed. “I’m just … remember the music? Using my brain I meant.”
The two young creatures stared at each other for another long moment.
“So you were dancing to remembered music,” the private said, “in public corridors.”
“Is that against base rules?” the human asked, his strange, mud like face wrinkling in perplexity.
“No,” Specialist Feathering cut in. “No it is not, and now that the private’s curiosity has been satisfied we will now return to work. Enjoy your recreation time and don’t step on anyone Ranger Billy Bob.”
“Sure thing Specialist Feathering!” the human called out before beginning to bounce down the corridor.
The private looked at Specialist Feathering his eyes practically bursting with questions. Specialist Feathering deliberately pulled out his datapad and activated it.
“Now, as I was saying. Optimizing the radiation levels will be pointless until we figured out the mineral balance.”

Excerpt 26


Somehow Drake got that the alien was disappointed but the nearly inaudible tread of his sister coming down the barn stairs drew his attention. In one hand she held two plastic travel mugs by the handles and in the other she held a large tea pot. Her face was taut and the reason was slinking down the steps behind her.
“Sever?” Drake rose in his seat and addressed the smaller alien. “Amadahy doesn’t like people to hover in her blind spot.”
Sever glanced at him with a wolves eyes and tilted his head to the side but stayed where he was. Bard raised his head and gave a low growl. Instantly the smaller alien leapt forward, transforming in mid air, and before the humans could blink a silver cougar was sprawling around the root structure at the base of the main pillar. Ama stared at the imitation animal in shock and lifted a finger on the hand holding the cup accusingly.
“You are the Haunt Cat!” she gasped breaking into laughter.
“Haunt Cat?” Bard asked curiously.
“Back forty, fifty years ago a ranger reported a giant cougar that glowed silver in the night,” Ama explained as she set the cups on the woodstove and poured in the tea. “He was spotted off and on for a decade or two after that but then the sightings dried up.”
Bard glanced over at the cat form in surprise but Sever only grinned toothily.
“I wasn’t very skilled at maintaining this form when we first landed,” was all Sever offered. “I got better.”

Excerpt 25


Drake stood in the moonlit garden staring up at the impossible scene in front of him. A towering giant of living crystal knelt in front of Ama singing the most beautiful song he had ever heard. Its head was raised to the heavens and its great hands were stretched out as if in supplication. Light flowed through and out of the powerful body. Brother and sister reached out and grasped hands as they watched in wonderment. The song finally faded and Ama gasped in the sudden silence. The alien was staring down at them expectantly.
“What was that?” she asked.
“His name,” Drake breathed in awe.
Ama nodded and took a deep breath. Drake couldn’t be sure, but it seemed to him that the lights from Bole shifted just as uncomfortably.
“Well, I am Amadahy Galilahi Love and you have met my brother Drake Awiegwa McCarty.”
Bole nodded and smiled warmly down at Drake, sending an odd thrill through the youth.
“I,” Ama hesitated and frowned. “What can I call you? I can’t mimic the sounds I heard let alone the light display that I was able to see, and were you using heat signatures as well?”
“Yes, the temperature differentials were part of my designation,” Bole stated even as his body flowed once more into the shape of a bear.
His outer membrane darkened down to black. He would not pass as a bear in the daylight, even under the moon he gleamed like obsidian but strolling through the forest he made a passable ursine. Ama had to admit that she somehow found this form far more comforting than the crystal colossus. The alien seemed to be hesitating and glancing at Drake as if waiting for him to say something but finally spoke.
“The soldiers on base simply call me Bard,” he finally said, “It is a diminutive of the translation of my name. This is Sever.”

“She will be fine,” he assured the still nervous Drake. “Come here and see.”
The creature knelt and held out a hand to the youth. Drake took the proffered help and scrambled up onto the firm living crystal lap. He peered down at Ama’s face intently in the faint flickering light.
“Ah, very sorry,” Bole murmured. “Give me a moment.”
Suddenly the scene brightened. Drake glanced up and blinked, a bright circle had appeared on Bole’s chest shining down on Ama’s sleeping form. The youth reached out and gently shook her shoulder.
“Sis? Ama? Hey wake up-“
A powerful brown hand shot up with a snarl and gripped his throat. Drake struggled for a moment to lose the long fingers from around his neck but his sister released him quickly.
“Four feet genius,” she muttered rubbing her face.
“McCarty? Are you well? Did that attack cause that?” Bole asked worriedly.
Drake snorted and rubbed his neck without taking his eyes off of Ama. At the sound of the giant’s voice her face had obviously cleared and she was now staring up at the rounded human-like features in fascination and awe.
“No, no, house rules state that if we wake her up from any less than four feet away we are responsible for any consequences that occur,” Drake stated wryly. “Ama just wakes up mean.”
“She is a warrior?” Bole asked curiously examining the figure in his arms.
“No, she’s a scientist.”

Drake focused on that realization and scrambled back towards the strength that Bole was radiating. His shoulder brushed the rough hide and the outer layer fell away. Soft human skin brushed against a rough living crystal membrane. A shock of power passed between them and for a second their eyes met. Suddenly Drake could hear voices like music flowing back and forth; neither sounded happy at the moment.
Drake’s strength returned to his shaking limbs and he darted up and over to where Ama lay on the ground. Her pulse was strong against his fingers and in the moonlight he could see no obvious injuries.
“Ama, come on Ama wake up!” He smacked at her face gently but got no response.
Not wanting to risk aggravating any spinal injuries he glanced around. There, her radio was on the ground next to her. She was almost never without it. He snatched it up. Looking over at Bole he blinked. From this angle it appeared that the armored bear was struggling with a waterfall of liquid light.

Drake McCarty’s leg was shattered deep in the wilderness, and as the flash flood closed over him, he looked death in the face.
When he wakes up in a hospital bed, in a military base that shouldn’t exist, he has a whole leg and a furious sister to deal with.
Drake is sworn to keep a secret he doesn’t understand, but whatever pulled him out of the flood, isn’t quite done with him yet, because even if you leave nothing but footprints, the things that walk the forest can still follow you home.


Excerpt 22




Park Biologist Amadahy Love knew bears. She had seen far more than her share in the years she had bounced around the United States National Park Service as a seasonal and wrangling the black bear population of Elkhorn was one of her primary jobs. She had seen them live and wild, drugged and tagged, and dead and rotten. She had no idea what she was looking at here in the forest by her home, but this was no bear. Aside from the fact that there had been no Grizzly’s this far south in generations, it was easily twice the size of the largest Kodiak, and it was just wrong. Still, it was bear shaped, large and headed towards her house. Training and experience had the cold steel of the Remington in her hands before she had even fully processed this. Ama chambered a firecracker round and aimed above its head.
Her breathing evened as she prepared to fire the first shot. Then her eyes widened in shock as something flickered in the air between her and the creature. The weight in her hands suddenly lessened followed by a soft thump at her feet and for a brief moment she stared in shock at the cleanly severed steel barrel and plastic stock of the shotgun. Then there was a prick at her spine and the world went dark around her.
