Project Solaris
It’s been tough waiting for readers to get back to me about No Mere Zombie. I gave them until the 25th, and initially thought I’d use February to work on Vampires Don’t Sparkle. This worked for a while, and I finished the first 25,000 words (about 100 pages), but I kept running into problems.
The plot could still change in book 2 based on reader feedback, so it makes it hard to complete book 3. On Friday I decided to take a little break and work on the prologue for a companion series to Deathless. It has familiar faces like Trevor and our friends at Mohn corp, but it deals with The Builders instead of everyone’s favorite undead.
Here’s a sneak peek at the rough draft for the blurb. Does this sound like something you’d read? I hope so, because I’ve cranked out a staggering 50,000 words over the last week. I like the premise, I like writing in the first person and I love the super powers:
It’s X-Files meets Heroes.
Project Solaris
I write software at a startup in Silicon Valley, where Google is king and Elon Musk holds court. I have my dream job, but I also have a secret.
We are not alone. The last time I was taken I was fourteen. Three weeks ago I had my twenty-eight birthday, and part of me knows that they will soon come again.
I devoted my life to technology so I’d be ready when they returned. Others have prepared too, and I will find them. Together we will harness the abilities they have given us.
We are Project Genesis. It’s time to fight back.

Alternate cover art for The First Ark
Back in October when I conceived of The First Ark I had a totally different idea for the cover. The story involves the last neanderthal, so I asked Nikoloai to give me a cover showing one.
The winged staff he’s holding is the Primary Access Key for the Ark behind him, and the same Isis has on the final version of the cover.
I loved the neanderthal, but the Ark lost a lot of the mystique I felt it had on the cover of No Such Thing As Werewolves. I may still have used it, but I realized that The First Ark is Isis’s tale. It was fitting that she grace the cover.
Now I’m left with this great piece that is otherwise unused, so I figured why not share it with you guys?

So what the heck is O.W.L. and why is the the book dedicated to Lisa?
Much to my shock I’ve received a fair amount of fan mail over the past couple months. This amazes me, because they come from people who enjoy my work. That’s still a foreign concept, and every time I see a new email I can’t help but grin.
Many of those emails have asked the same question about the dedication. Who is Lisa and what the heck is O.W.L.? A few people have theorized that it must be from Harry Potter, but no I’m not going for my ordinary wizarding levels.
See that lovely girl to the right? That’s Lisa. We’ve been dating for nearly two years, and if it weren’t for her I’d never have published the first book.
I’d written the first third of No Such Thing As Werewolves when we met, but it had been months since I’d worked on it. Then she devoured my back catalogue of short stories and novellas, and asked me if I had anything else. So I had no choice but to keep writing. When I finished the first draft Lisa was one of the first to read it and offer feedback, and she’s done the same for The First Ark and No Mere Zombie.
She’s not only gorgeous, but also brilliant. Many of my best ideas come from her, including the iconic Warning: May Contain Werewolves. So where does O.W.L. come in? Lisa and I started dating because we are both geeky programmers who love fantasy and video games.
Very early in the relationship I told her I’d launched an operation to woo her. This was shortened to Operation Woo Lisa, which became O.W.L. It’s my master plan to landing the girl of my dreams. So far, so good!
