Happy Memorial Day…

I often see posts on facebook…

IN CASE YOU FORGOT…IT’S NOT ABOUT A THREE DAY WEEKEND!

Actually, I think in a way, it kind of is.  I think the soldiers who laid down their lives would want you to enjoy this three day weekend (if you’re able to have one), enjoy a picnic, cookout, camping, time at the lake or whatever it is you do, however it is you celebrate the freedom they’ve laid down their lives for.

They step up to serve so we can have these freedoms and enjoy them.

Thanks for all those in the past that have served, those who’ve paid the ultimate price and for those who are still in service now.

Revisiting my FBI Psychics

I’ve had an idea bubbling for a story for Nalini and Tucker, who were introduced in The Reunited.

However, Berkley, the publisher for these stories, has no interest in buying any more paranormals from me.  So…my dilemma.

I’m open to trying to self-publish, but self-publishing comes with a lot of upfront costs and before I even consider it, I need to weight interest.

So, if you’re a reader of the FBI Psychics…I’d like to hear from you.  Here. Email. Tweet me. FB me. I don’t care. Just drop me a line and let me know.

Also, I’m looking at crowdsourcing the upfront costs, offering the book and other benefits to help cover those upfront cost.

I know some people hate it when authors crowdsource. Others don’t care.  One reason I’m considering it with this book is because they did start out in print, available in bookstores, etc and my distributor has a new program where I can get my self-pubbed books into bookstores, but again..upfront costs and sadly, as much as I long to see it happen, I’ve yet to cross over into the lifestyle of the rich and authorly famous. Infamous, maybe, but the rich…eh. Should I decide to move forward with crowdsourcing, there will be a book, I guarantee that. Having funds up front would simply allow for the best editorial, the best distribution, covers, etc.

No…you don’t, on how to be a writer

prom nightDiva had her prom the other day. She ‘d had a date, but things kind of fizzled and she ended up going solo, then hanging with frends, so while that sorta sucked, I was proud of her for not staying at her dorm and brooding. She had fun and she danced–I know for a fact because I was there as a chaperone.

Prom night was interesting viewing it from a lens of oh, say…twenty years.  The dresses are a lot prettier.  Back in the nineties, a lot of the dresses were like a return to the old south vomit of lace and silk tragedy, but it’s funny because most of the girls wore long gowns that fit perfectly…if the shoes were on.  And the shoes were off within twenty minutes of clearing the door.  I bet there were over a hundred sparkly heels lining the dance floor.

The day after, I headed back home–Diva attends a high school program for brainiac types and lives on campus two hours away.  On the way home, I stopped by the Barnes and Noble in Greenwood, IN to sign stock.

While I was doing that, a boy approached the counter and heard me talking to the manager. He looked…well, amazed.

Our conversation went like:

Him: “You wrote those?”

Me: “Yep.”

Him: “Wow.  How long did it take?”

Me: “It depends on the book.” I pointed to Busted. “Two months.” I pointed to The Trouble with Temptation. “Probably three. Some books take more time, some take less.”

“Wow. That’s so cool.” He started to turn away–he had a girl with him, probably his sister and bth were listening.  Then he stopped and looked back at me.  “Do you have to go to school to do that?”

I laughed and then said something that will probably incite fury in some.  “No.  Some people are going to say otherwise, but I never took a single class on how to be a writer**. I went to college to be a nurse.  Now it helps if you do well in school and pay attention language arts and stuff–and read,. You have to read and have a good imagination. But you’re in a bookstore, so I assume you like to read.”

He nodded.

“Then you’re already headed in the right direction.”how to be a writer

He smiled, looking delighted.

I never got his name, but it was probably one of the coolest interactions I’ve had with a reader of any sort, just interacting over a mutual love of books in general.

**I’ve done workshops now that I’m published, but we were talking school/college.

Heading South…Then North…Then South…Reader/Author events!

First…see mah snazzy new website design? Hope it looks okay.  I like it. A new tagline…inspired from a comment a reader left for me on Facebook.

Speaking of small-town thrillers…have you read THE TROUBLE WITH TEMPTATION? FYI, iBooks thinks you should.  Well, that didn’t say that exactly, but they did say it was one of the Best of May.

See?

May

From iBooks…

The Trouble with Temptation

The second book in Shiloh Walker’s The McKays series opens at breakneck speed and doesn’t slow down. Hannah Parker wakes up after seven days in a coma to find that she can’t remember her name, the details of the accident that landed her in the hospital, or even the fact that she is pregnant. She does remember the baby’s father, though: wealthy Brannon McKay, the man who broke her heart. Deliciously soapy, The Trouble with Temptation blends drama and mystery with sexy romance.

Now that I’m done tooting my own horn (forgive me, I’m excited)…I’ve got some reader/author events coming up!

Next month, I’ll be in Alabama for the HOD Readers Luncheon.  FYI, if you’ve never been to a reader’s luncheon and this (or any of the ones I’ve attended) is doable? You should go.  They are soooo much fun and not too expensive. Most are $50 or under–this one is $35 and it includes a $5 coupon to the bookfair afterwards.  For that you get lunch, a meet & greet with the authors beforehand and then there’s the signing afterward. All authors bring gifts for the readers at their tables and there’s a keynote keynote speaker-this year it’s Kirstan Higgins. Also…LINDA HOWARD attends this one. Info.

A member of romance land, and a member of my street team, Crystal, lost her husband to cancer two days ago. They were struggling to keep up with his medical bills and now she has to take care of his final expenses. If you can help, it would be a wonderful kindness. More info here.

Ireader author eventsn August, I’ll be in Troy, Michigan for the first Rust City Book Con.  More info on that here…it’s a cross-genre book con. Fun, yes?

Then I’m back south agan…twice! And out west…a little.  But that’s for an RWA chapter thing in Novemer and little info on it yet.

I’m attending Moonlight & Magnolias in Georgia on 9.29-10.2. Info.

Then in October…I’ll be at Hogwarts. Well, sorta. And that’s not a work/book thing, but I’m going anyway. Then it will be a a work/book thing. I’ll be at Shameless Book Con on 10/22. Info

I’ll also be at the Southern Magic Luncheon in November…more details coming soon on that one!

The Best and Bits and Pieces

Tomorrow is the Derby.  As a girl born in Kentucky and somebody who has been in the Kentuckiana area for almost my entire life, I feel the need to offer some advice.

sw bourbonThe mint julep is overrated. If you’re having a Derby party and wanted to be kinda…well, I dunno…true to the theme, but you hate the mint julep? Try the Lily.  It’s way better than the julep.  Personally, I think the julep is an insult to bourbon. If you want your bourbon, sip it over the rocks and enjoy the Lily, which is the drink crafted for the Oaks, the race run the day before the Derby. See? You’re still following the horse racing theme.

Recipe here. It’s cranberry, sweet and sour, triple sec and vodka.  And pure awesomeness.cap

I went and saw Captain America: Civil War. I still stand with the Captain, because again…awesomeness.

Yesterday I got to blow something up. Legally. Don’t ask, because I’m not telling but law enforcement was on and they set it up but I still got to push a button.  It was epic.

Right before that, I had an email from my editor.

It said…

“Dear Shiloh,

THE TROUBLE WITH TEMPTATION is a Best Book of May at iBooks!  Congratulations.”
My response was
“Son of a bitch. Wow.”
I’m so good with words. o.o
So…let me just share this…

May

Go on… go look at iBooks and see the Best of May in all it’s awesomeness, because I almost died when I saw my book up there.

Make me forget… The Trouble With Temptation

Trouble With TemptationHannah had a pale, bruised look to her.

Brannon wanted to find whatever had hurt her and tear it apart.

She stood in the doorway, staring at him and he reached up, cupped her face in his hands.

Slowly, he brushed his thumb across her lower lip.

A slow shudder wracked her body.

“What’s happened?” he asked. “What’s hurt you?”

Clouds entered her eyes. “Nothing,” she said, shaking her head. “I’m just…”

She backed up and turned. “Come on in, Brannon.”

Outside, the wind started to howl and she moved over to the window, staring outside. “Rain’s coming.”

After closing and locking the door behind him, he crossed the floor to her.

He had the oddest feeling he was walking on eggshells.

“Unless you’re upset over the weather report, then I don’t care.” He curved his hands over her shoulders and pulled her back against him. “Now if you are upset by the weather… well, I can’t do anything about it. I can’t beat up the meteorologists and Mother Nature never returns my calls.”

“She’s a bitch, isn’t she?” Hannah laughed weakly. Then she dropped her head back against his chest. “Don’t…it’s nothing, Brannon.”

He rubbed his cheek against hers. “That look on your face isn’t nothing.”

“Maybe. But there’s nothing you can do about it.” She turned and slid her arms around his waist. “How is Marc doing?”

He wanted to push it, but figured now wasn’t the time. “Okay. I guess.” Tucking her up snug against him, he rubbed his cheek against her hair. “He’s busying himself with some blends for next year and going crazy about a fungus that he thinks could hit our crops.”

“A fungus.” Hannah wrinkled her nose as she looked up at him. “What, like a grape fungus?”

Brannon flashed her a grin. “The exciting life of a vintner, Hannah.”

“Hmmm. I bet.” She reached up, almost absently, and scraped her fingers against his jaw. “Neve was telling me something about how she’s getting schooled in winemaking—you roped her into helping write copy for the brochures.” A faint grin came and went. “I’ve got to admit, I like my wine, but my eyes glazed over after she started explaining there are like five hundred chemical compounds—”

“Fifteen hundred.”

Hannah blinked and then her eyes really started to glaze. “Ah…whoa. Are you serious?”

“Yeah.” Grinning, he hugged her. “But don’t worry. I won’t bore you with the details and specifics, or tell you why you only find wines like muscadines down south.”

“Gee. Thanks.” She rubbed the mound of her belly and went back to staring outside. Rain was starting to come down. It was those hard, slow drops that were a prelude to a heavy storm. “I really don’t want to talk about muscadine wine anyway. Seeing as how I can’t have any for a few more months.”

A heavy sigh escaped her. “I could really use a glass of wine, too.”

“Why don’t you talk to me instead?”

For a moment, he thought she would.

But then she turned to him and placed her hands on his chest.

His heart made a hard leap when she covered it with her palm. “I’ve got a better idea. Why don’t you distract me?”

Brannon suspected it wasn’t smart.

Whatever was bothering her, she really did need to talk about it. And he needed to be the guy she was able to talk to. He needed to be the guy period, because he was shit-faced in love with her and had been for…hell. He didn’t even know when it had started.

But then she trailed that hand down lower and cupped him through his jeans.

His eyes started to roll back in his head as she freed him from his jeans and briefs in short order. She closed her hand around him, moving with quick, rough strokes that would have had him coming all over her if she wasn’t careful.

He caught her wrist.

“Stop,” he rasped, backing her up against the window.

“I don’t want to.” She lifted her face to his, staring into his eyes. “I don’t want to stop. I don’t want to think. I just…want.”

“Hannah…” His heart broke a little.

“Make love to me, Brannon.” There was both plea and demand in her voice.

He was completely her slave, because he couldn’t deny her.

“I will.” He went to strip her shirt away, but she shoved him back and yanked it off.

“I don’t want slow.” She stared at him, a challenge in her eyes. “I don’t want sweet and I don’t want you to stroke me and pat me and try to make me feel better.”

She caught the lapels of his shirt and jerked him back to her.

“Then what do you want?”

“I want you to fuck me.” She stared at him, her gaze unapologetic. “I want you to make me forget all the things I’m starting to remember…and all the things I can’t.”

There, he realized.

That’s where the hurt was. Right there. But he couldn’t fix it. All he could do was be there…and this. He could do exactly what she’d just asked and he’d enjoy it. He’d enjoy it and pretend the twist and rub of guilt didn’t exist. He could ignore the guilt.

Love is the greatest risk of all.

After seven days in a coma, Hannah Parker remembers nothing about the accident that landed her in the hospital–or how she ended up pregnant with Brannon’s baby, the man she’s loved since high school. Her body and heart have burned for him for years, and when she wakes up, he’s sleeping by her bedside, anxious to keep her safe at all costs. But as Hannah struggles with her amnesia, a threat looms closer–one that could have deadly consequences if she recovers her memories. She will have to trust Brannon completely if she is to keep what haunts her at bay…and their baby safe….

Brannon McKay spent the last ten years fantasizing about Hannah. In his mind, he’s explored every passionate scenario he can think of while, in real life, Brannon took their budding relationship and threw it away with both hands. Hannah doesn’t remember what happened but now that she is awake, Brannon would rather die than watch her walk away again. When Hannah and his unborn child’s lives are threatened, Brannon must stake claim to the woman who has held his heart captive for years…or risk disaster tearing them apart…

#IwasVeyed – Barbara Vey Weekend 2016

This is the catchphrase that Jade Lee introduced us to sort of explain the experience you have when you’re fortunate enough to meet Barbara Vey.

And it’s an experience.
