How far would you go to bring your twin’s killer to justice?

Walking on the edge with the underbelly of society in the shadows of the night could be hazardous to your health…or worse—deadly.
No one notices when Brianna Denton goes missing every weekend. With no immediate family or close friends left, being alone is something with which she has become well-acquainted, but when her sister is murdered, she finds herself on a lone mission to identify the killer.
According to the authorities, ‘no body, no case.’ Brianna’s quest to find her sister’s murderer despite the police department’s refusal to help, draws her into a life of drugs, alcohol, and prostitution—the very elements that led her twin to the shadows and rat holes of the underbelly of North Beach.
Drawn into the dark underground society to face Tatianna’s killer, Brianna is about to come face-to-face with her own shocking destiny. As she unearths long-buried secrets, the tight edge of reality comes to light, challenging her tenuous grip on life as she knows it. Finding the answers she seeks could lead her to an even darker place.

Everyone gets what they deserve. Everybody knows that. Hell, it didn’t matter anyway. She was proof. What was a good Catholic college girl doing walking the streets in the wee hours before dawn? She could hardly reconcile the two opposing lifestyles herself.Brianna was all alone on the barren, black, wet streets. Curiously, she was unafraid to walk the night with the underbelly of society. The longer she followed this path, the more accustomed she became to living in the darkness.

Death's Shadow by Dariel Raye & Muffy WilsonEveryone gets what they deserve. Tonight was likely identical to the night her sister was murdered. She was probably troubled by the same things—haunted by the depths of her own depravity, or at least her own actions, but she was doing what she had to do...for Tatianna. She owed it to her. The click-clack of her heels on the sidewalk announced her approach as she headed…where? Home? That was a laugh. It made her think of the first time—her first time, maybe her sister’s first time—on the streets and in the black flesh pits of San Francisco that served up watered down whiskey, easy women and the finest drug connections money could buy, cheat or steal. Shrouded in the black lies hidden by the night, she did whatever she needed to do to find out what happened to her sister, even when it meant entertaining the sleaziest the streets had to offer. The rain always had that effect, kept the good ones home while the creeps washed out of every skank black hole. The things she’d done in the name of finding Tatianna’s killer would have sent her careening toward confession immediately after puking her guts out, but there was no time for that. The police didn’t know and had no more leads. What else could she do? She had to find out. She had to help. At least, she had to try. But, she got swept away in the trying, caught up in a life she no longer recognized as her own.Rain pelted the street even harder as she continued along the sidewalk. It was getting harder to remember the differences between her sister’s face and her own. The details of Tatianna’s face seemed to fade more and more as time passed. Sometimes, she felt so lost, it was hard to remember why she was here. It was getting harder and harder…and easier, too. There were nights she couldn’t bear to think about who killed her sister and there were nights she could think of little else. She couldn’t believe the police actually laughedat her. Clearly, they had no intentions of doing anything. She was the only one who cared. The line between purpose and obsession became obscure. The fact thatshe was here proved she’d already crossed it.For tonight, she avoided eye contact, her way of saying she was closed for business as she headed to her one-bedroom flat. There was a wild thought afloat that nothing positive ever happens until you hit the very bottom of the abyss. Nothing positive had even begun to happen in her life. Guess she had further to fall, since she clearly had not hit rock bottom. Until then, she entertained herself with the thought of finding her sister’s killer and wiping those mocking grins off the police officers’ faces. “Hey!”Brianna turned at the sound of a heavy, male voice across the street. Despite the rain, his tone made his intentions clear. She didn’t have to see him up close. Fan-fuckin’-tastic. Another creep.Apparently, she had one more interview to perform before the night ended. No names, no “what do you do for a living”, no talk about wives, lovers, divorces or kids. Those were her rules and if they wanted to fuck her, they did it on her terms and that included answering her questions. The rhythmic thudding of heavy boots coupled with splashing water snatched her away from her thoughts to face the approaching customer. Sighing, she resigned herself to one more. Clear, simple, no muss no fuss…and no lying or kissing. She didn’t want to kiss the underbelly of society, and she didn’t abide lies well. They could save the lies and facades for someone else – someone who cared enough to keep things pleasant. She reached into her over-shoulder bag and whipped out Tati’s picture, always hoping against hope. Maybe this one would supply a lead.—Vengeance by John LingMaya Raines hated the idea of walking into a trap, but she decided to do it anyway. She was dressed in a Muslim robe — long and loose and rustling in the wind. Her face was covered by a veil. She carried a grocery bag as she moved along the sidewalk, being careful not to trip on the pockmarked concrete and scattered rubble. All around her, ominous black flags hung from the shopfronts and soared from the rooftops, declaring the rise of an Islamist caliphate. And just ahead, a roadblock had been set up, manned by jihadi fighters. A modified pickup truck — a technical — was parked on the intersection, with a machine gun mounted on its rear bed. Maya could hear Arabic being spoken in the distance. It sounded harsh and strident; completely different to the gentle melodic rhythm of the Malay language that she was used to. These men were foreign Sunnis. They had come from as far afield as Egypt and Libya, drawn to Malaysia by the promise of killing local Shiites. Maya felt the slow burn of anxiety in her stomach…
—Facing the Past by Alexa Padgett“Hank. Thirteen hours. At dawn, Jonathan, gone for thirteen hours.”
Hank turned toward Nancy, his look hollow. Nothing moved across his face, through his eyes. He tilted his head, marginally interested as she swallowed then gasped for air. Hank closed his eyes. “I can’t see any better in the dark than they can,” he said. “You heard the detective say they brought in the dogs. A helicopter from Fort Worth. It’s a full-scale search, almost everyone in town was out looking till it got too dark.”
A faint hum. Louder, a thwap, thwap overhead, a blinding spotlight. Again.
“They could miss him from up there.”
“We’ve already missed him,” Hank shot back, eyes glinting in the semi-darkness.
Nancy shrank back, away from him.
He lowered his head nearly to his knees. Inhaled, exhaled. “My son.”
Cicadas hummed, pressing their bodies against the house. Nothing could hold them together. Not with Jonny missing.
A whippoorwill called. Hank stood there, between the foyer and the living room where Nancy huddled.
“What are we going to do?” she asked him.
Another pass from the helicopter. A dog barking.
Hank hesitated again before seeming to consciously lift his leg to step into the room.
He lay his hand on her shoulder, fingers against her collarbone, his face telling Nancy he was too used up to do more as darkness crowded out the faint porch light.

Blurb:
Generations ago, he died for her. Now, it’s her turn.
Pride kept them from looking at one another, but their bodies could not lie. Recognition lived in their souls, rekindling memories of passion, love, betrayal….and death.
Apache Elder Aidan Stringfellow, V, is a very wealthy man with one wish – to free his only son, the brilliant, yet abrasive David, from the curse that has plagued his family for generations. When his controversial plan for a cure is revealed, shock and disbelief are only the beginning, for David has deadly, yet beguiling secrets of his own.
Choosing to honor Aidan’s wishes, David and Katala unwittingly awaken an ancient evil desperate to lay claim to the last-born Stringfellow – David. The tumultuous consequences of a vengeful pact spanning generations, defies time, tradition, and death itself.
Katala finds herself falling in love with a man whose gaze and touch ignite long-forgotten passion, propelling her to fight for his life. She unearths one devastating clue after another on her winding journey toward the truth, but unseen forces escalate their attack as truth collides with myth. Clinging desperately to her own sanity, she must find a way to reconcile the two, for even her own identity comes into question. Trust no one. Not even David.
Time is running out. Promises will be kept, and if the devil has his way, souls will be claimed.
Excerpt:
David hit the button to start his playlist, then turned to face Katala. His speech was halting, but deliberate. “What do you need me to do before we move forward with this agreement?” “Where did that come from all of a sudden? A moment ago, we were talking about work.” Following the wedding, they used most of their extra time moving into a new free-standing flat. Katala had actually taken a six-week leave from work, but cried the night before she had to return. Now, she sat barefoot on the sofa in a long pink cotton gown. “David, I don’t want to talk about that right now. I hate the way you change the subject in midstream like that. I – I’d just like to know you better. You know, feel more comfortable with you. I don’t want to just have sex because we’re supposed to.”David’s gaze followed her as she moved closer to him. “What do you need to know?” he asked. She gave a short laugh. She had to admit, she liked his straightforward manner. Despite her initial distrust, she was beginning to change her mind. One thing she realized she did not have to worry about with him was lies. He was so used to getting his way there was absolutely no guile in him. He simply said ‘I want this or that’, and people did whatever he wanted. She never doubted she would be any different. Honestly, he lit a fire inside her she’d never felt before, but she refused to give in just yet.“David, I want to know how you feel, what you think, what’s important to you. You know - things that I’m sure most married couples know about each other. Nothing out of the ordinary.”He smiled. “How about I don’t like waiting. Is that enough about how I feel and what I think?”
Author Interview:
~ Dariel Raye ~
Why do you write?
I write for two main reasons: 1. Reading has always been one of my favorite things, and I feel gratitude towards authors who offer an escape from the difficulties of real life. I strive to do the same, and in writing, I manage to escape as well.2. Human and animal rights. Animals and their welfare play a prominent role in my stories, and I am driven to subtly shed light on the dearth of Black and interracial female heroines as standards of beauty and desirability. Too often, people from other cultures don’t realize the lack and the resulting negative impact erasure and subsequent neglect have on us as women.
What genre does most of your work fall under?
Urban fantasy/ paranormal romance. I’m also collaborating on a mystery with Muffy Wilson, and after its release I’m working on a psy-thriller/suspense with romantic elements to be released next year.
Why did you choose that genre?
Feels like home to me. These sub-genres allow my imagination complete freedom, and I can better offer the sense of escape that I’m seeking.
What are some of the drawbacks of this genre?
There are so many creative authors, thinking of something that hasn’t been done to death can be challenging.
What are some of the benefits?
In some ways, the drawbacks are the benefits as well; i.e., accepting the challenge to think outside the box and create yet another world for readers to escape to is exhilarating. I enjoy taking real people who have always considered themselves to be ordinary, and placing them in extraordinary, supernatural situations and environments. It adds even more fire when the “ordinary” person develops strong feelings for a paranormal being, or in some instances finds that they, themselves possess exceptional abilities.
How does your work contribute to the genre?
I write interracial/multicultural characters who are not only dealing with the main plots, romance, and conflict, but there’s always a subplot dealing with a real-life issue such as animal cruelty, human rights issues, and racism. The subplots don’t slap readers in the face and snap them away from their escape, but I like to think they shed light on issues that might not have been considered in the same way before. What would the title of your life story be? And why?
Driven. I’ve always felt driven to do something with the gifts God has given me. Now, managing chronic illness along with daily pain and numerous surgical procedures, has added a level of urgency because I’m constantly faced with my own mortality.
Besides writing, what other creative passions do you have?
Music and art. I also love dance, but with my tomboy roots, I’m about as graceful as a donkey.
Which quote best sums up your writing style?
“Strong heroines, badass heroes, fast-paced, action packed…lots of twists and turns…filled with romance, suspense, and drama…” Totally Addicted 2 Reading
Tell us about your background and education?
My degrees are in music (piano and vocal performance), counseling psychology (mental health, substance abuse, and career decisions), and I have all but dissertation (ABD due to illness) towards my Ph.D. Along the way, I’ve taught every academic subject, private piano and voice lessons, and worked from child support investigations to mental health and substance abuse therapy to band director and college career counselor. It’s been an interesting journey so far.
Which are your three favorites?
Whichever story I’m writing at the moment. Right now, it would have to be “Devil’s Claim,” from the “Wings of the Wicked” boxed set, “Dangerous Beauty, Sexy Beast,” and “Dark Opius,” a Cursed Angel story from the Charmed Legacy.
What writing advice would you give to yourself prior to completing your first novel?
Write at least 2 books of an entire series before releasing the first one, then release them 2-months apart. That way, by the time people start to forget, there’s another one in the wind. Wish I’d taken that advice. About the Author:

Author Interview:
~ Muffy Wilson ~
Who is Muffy Wilson in her own words?
I am a wife, mother, daughter and sister first and an author of provocative romance about love, sex, hope and passion second. I was born in Texas to traditional parents. With two older brothers. I was the youngest, the family "princess," indulged and pampered. My father was a career Colonel and pilot in the U.S. Air Force which required our family to travel extensively. I spent my formative years in Europe and 'came of age' in France (a state of affairs that gave my father much cause for concern one loooong summer on the Italian Riviera!) which forged my joie de vivre and love for books, writing and education. I liked Aldo a lot then too.
What is one thing you would like the world to remember you for?
I am a simple person. I would like to be remembered as a good person, loving wife and nurturing mother. I never met a stranger nor turned anyone away that needed help. And I have tried hard to learn from my mistakes but I am not always successful in that endeavor!
What got you into writing?
An old boyfriend from high school. We reconnected after all these years and he writes self-help real estate books. And I was selling real estate on the side, so we still had a lot in common. That said, I took a significant departure from self-help to provocative and paranormal romance.
Are you a full-time author or do you have a day job as well, and if so, what do you do?
When I first started writing fiction in 2010, I was still working (I was a Regional Director for IBM, owned a resort on Washington Island, Wisconsin, and have been a General Manager for high end retail furniture) but I have since retired and devote most of my free time to writing, my family, my pups and anything that will keep me from doing any housework!!
Where do you get your greatest ideas for writing?
My story lines come my life and from ordinary people: watching them, listening to them, talking to them about dreams, romance, passions ~ about their regrets and when they lost their heart, their virginity...a loved one. And then, somehow magically, I'll have a dream on one of those many nights I cannot sleep and a story title will come to me. It always starts with the title for me. Always. That's the piece that takes root, grabs me and blossoms.
What is your ‘Writing Routine’, if any?
I sit in the living room with my husband, when he does his crossword puzzles, and I write. And write. And write. His questions about clues and comments about the news or a movie often go unanswered when I am in the "zone".
Tell us a saucy/intimate/personal story about yourself.
Well, I was almost 36 when I got married. A child of the 60's anf 70's, I had a very free way of thinking about men. I thought men were healthy--at least for me. Since I worked in a man's business world, I lived my life much as men do when it comes to romance. And when I met the man that would steal my heart, I never looked back.
What are your Top (10?) Writing Tips? Writing Advice?
Never start with a prologue or the weather, but start.Don’t worry if your first draft is any good; it won’t be. just start.Write every day, at the same time for the same length of time. Self-disciple is only a routine. But you gotta start…So start.Write what you would like to read, from your heart. And start.Allow yourself to change your mind. Change is a reflection of inspiration. A new perspective. But start.Name your work immediately and give it life, honor, position, credibility, purpose. You’ve started!Keep notes of anything favorite, interesting, or inspiring: names, titles, phrases, descriptions, music. Each new voice requires a new paragraph. If you must, only use “said”. Anything else is "fluff" wastes ink pretentiously. I'm still learning that one! Get started!Be kind to yourself. Your work may not be great or Nobel material, but it is yours. Accept that your voice will change and evolve, but it is still yours. Start! There is no secret to writing. But there is an enemy — procrastination. Just start… Always start.About the Author:

Blurb:You say witch like it's a bad thing.
When Hugh is yanked out of his warlock apprenticeship and summarily assigned to guard a human female, he is justly incensed.
But when a water demon snatches her from under his nose, he sets off on a desperate race to save her. and prove he is a warlock to be reckoned with.
Excerpt:
The Honorable Mary Bryght, eighteen-year-old daughter of the late Viscount Holywell, faltered and came to a startled halt. She’d been traveling through the woods to her friend's home to deliver some astonishingly grand news about her brother. A sound drew her gaze toward a strand of willows that drank from a small pond. There, a stranger in a dark cape watched her, tapping a riding crop against his Hessians. At the malevolence emanating from him, the hairs on Mary’s arms stood to attention. In the space of one glance, her mood shifted from cheerful to fearful. She swallowed, tasting dread, and swiftly gauged how fast she must run to reach Rose’s cottage before this stranger’s long strides reached her. She took one deep breath in readiness to sprint, when the man appeared at her side, his large hand grasping her upper arm so hard it pinched. She cried out. He dropped his riding crop and covered her mouth with his hand, swamping her senses with a pungent aroma of horse sweat and leather.Fifteen feet! That’s how far away he’d been. Yet, he had closed the distance between them as if it had only been two feet. Heart pounding in terror, she kicked his shin, bit hard onto a gloved finger and with her free hand, punched his throat as her father had taught her.He grunted and loosened his grip.Mary tore away and ran. Within a half dozen steps her body froze. There was no other way to describe the bizarre experience. She could not shift one foot, one hand, one finger. She was a statue in mid-motion.“Now, now, Miss Bryght,” the stranger said, “such violence is uncalled for. I’ve come a long distance to find you.”Her right foot was raised, the left poised on toes as Mary stared straight ahead. Am I still alive? She couldn’t hear herself breathing. There, a pulse tapped against her throat like the wings of a frightened caged bird. What was happening? She felt abused and defiled, as if something dark and foul had tainted her. Was this some sort of witchery?Villagers spoke of spells and magic. She thought such talk absurd. Even when the midwife once slyly hinted to seven-year-old Mary that a spell could be responsible for her mother’s mental sickness, she had questioned that assumption. How could a spell take away her mother’s memories, her speech, everything that made her who she was?Science, my dear, not superstition, her father had said when she’d asked him about it, can explain the cause of all illnesses, given time. Now she questioned his certainty. This pause in time did not feel like an illness. Could this man be a witch? How did he know her name? “I have a message for your brother.” He shifted to stand directly in front. He was tall. From her motionless position, suspended slightly forward, only his voice box was visible. Too bad her punch hadn’t broken it. She must get Marcus to train her to improve her strength. If she lived to see him again. Her dry eyes ached with unshed tears.“Listen carefully.” The witch bent to make eye contact. Brown eyes. Determined. Pitiless. His gaze was eminently human, not red or glowing.“I shall say this once, Miss Bryght. Your brother is to refuse His Royal Highness’s request. You will convince him to do so. Do you understand?”Mary stared in stunned silence. This was about the painting? A witch had spelled her because the regent commissioned her brother to do a watercolor mural? Old village gossip resurfaced. This was not a witch. Men who practiced black arts were called warlocks. Women who practiced such vice were witches. Was this man a warlock then? Shudders raced up her body until her mind went dizzy. If she could move, she was certain she would faint. Was this how her mother had felt near the end? Powerless.Something tinged with green flashed behind the warlock. It went by so quickly she hadn’t seen it clearly but Mary received an impression of sharp, almost fang-like teeth, and horror cooled her skin like a bath of ice.
Author Interview:
~ Shereen Vedam ~
What is your greatest fear?I’d have to say being helpless. I have nightmares sometimes, when something horrible is happening and I try to scream but no sound comes out of my throat and I can’t move. Might explain what inspired the excerpt with the heroine from Warlock from Wales.
What is your greatest regret? They say a person’s greatest regret is often the thing they’ve left undone. In my case, that would be not asking my mother to teach me to cook some Sri Lankan recipes before she passed away. I wish my younger self could have been wise enough to have known the value of those lessons.
What is your favorite journey?Right now, that would be the one I took to Spain a few years back. I went horseback riding, trekking through dunes and visited a small village that reminded me of the wild west. It was awesome. I’d gone there to research one of my novels, A Perfect Curse.
Does writing energize or exhaust you?Energize.
What do you do when you don’t write?I love watching TV (current favorite show: Charmed), river/lake paddling (my team won gold in 2018 in one of their heats), and walking (there’s a trail near my home that I love).
Are there any nuggets of wisdom you can impart to aspiring writers? If you haven’t tried it, give writing into the mist a shot, by hand. Amazing how creative that exercise can be.
What are you working on now?I’m just at the beginning stages of a brand new 8-book series. They’ll be British Urban Fantasies set in Kent, UK and based on the adventures of an alleged descended of the Grimm brothers.
Finally, what are we likely to find in YOUR nightstand?
Wings of the Wicked . I’m looking forward to delving into all the amazing stories in this incredible collection. About the Author:

Shereen's a fan of resourceful women, intriguing men, and happily-ever-after endings. If her stories whisk you away to a different realm for a few hours, then Shereen will have achieved one of her life goals.

A simple mission turns deadly as the Daughter of Death is kidnapped by an old enemy seeking revenge. Now it’s up to me to find her and I will kill anyone who steps in my path.
The Son of Chaos isn’t playing. I’m armed, I’m pissed, and I want my Evangeline back. It’s time for Heaven and Hell to meet the real Archangel inside of me.
Everyone will pay.
Many will die.
Silver will slay.
And a new power will ascend from the Shadows…

Excerpt:
“How are you feeling?”“Irritated,” she replied, her blue eyes flaring.I cocked a brow. “Irritated?”“Yes.” She stared me down. “I’m naked, Xai.”“I see that, Evangeline.”“Do something about it.”My lips twitched in amusement. “I would offer you my shirt, but I’m not wearing one.” That seemed to be my constant state these days—bare feet, jeans, and shirtless. Oddly, I didn’t miss my suits. Her gaze narrowed. “You know that’s not what I want.”I cocked my head to the side playfully. “What do you want, love?”“Right now? To kill you.”“An entertaining proposition,” I mused. “Try and maybe I’ll reward you.” It would serve as a dose of foreplay shrouded in a test of her strength. I refused to push her until I knew she could take it.We didn’t make love. We fucked. Hard.I widened my stance and taunted her with a doubtful look. Her resulting growl went straight to my groin. Coupled with her lack of clothes, well, my pants were suddenly feeling a bit tight.
“Having second thoughts, darling?” I took a step toward her. “Worried you might be out of practice?”
Author Interview:
~ Lexi C. Foss ~
What is your greatest fear?
Spiders. My husband always escorts them outside for me, but I really, really, do not like the creepy crawly multi-eyed little monsters.
If you could choose to be a character in a book, who would it be?
Dex in Web of Lies by Tracie Delaney. #NateIsMine
Dogs or Cats?
Both! I have four dogs and one cat. I can’t choose.
What do you most value in a friend?
Honesty and trustworthiness.
What do you do as a hobby?
Swim, travel, see the world, and spend time with my hubby.
Where do you get your greatest ideas for writing?
From traveling and experiencing life.
What kind of research do you do, and how long do you spend researching before beginning a book?
I love researching for a book. All my worlds are founded in reality despite the paranormal elements, so I work very hard to capture accurate depictions of history and the present. Researching mythology is probably my favorite. What was life like in 1500 BC? Let’s research!
What are you working on now?
Royally Bitten, book two of my Blood Alliance series. It’s dark and twisted and I love it.
What would your friends say is your best quality?
My ability to read emotion and always provide accurate advice.
Are there any nuggets of wisdom you can impart to aspiring writers?
Research, read, and network. Research your craft, genre, marketing, social media avenues, and general publishing requirements. Read your genre and favorite authors. Network with everyone, make friends, learn from each other, and be humble.

The Fate of the world is in the hands of a fallen angel.
With a declining birth rate threatening to end humanity, three fallen angels fight to save it. The Angels of the Triad, the disgraced former protectors of Eve, are fearless in battle. But as demons gather strength, a prophecy is revealed that changes everything.
Sariel is lethal, and he knows it. Now the bitter angel must once again become a Protector, risking everything to guard Jenica a descendent of Eve. The fate of the world is tied to the life of a single woman, a petite blonde with a smile that could make angels fall.
Excerpt:
Chapter 1
Sariel watched disinterestedly from the alley-way, as the human ran across the road, her long hair flowing behind her like a white banner. Rain lashed down on him, splashing off the long leather trench coat he wore, ice cold needles of water running down his face and mingling with the blood that saturated his shirt.Demon blood! The stuff reeked like a sewer on a hot summer day. Even after thousands of years, smelling the stuff still made his stomach roil. Brushing his hair from his face, he stepped off the ledge of the tall apartment block, landing on the concrete 500 feet below with barely a whisper of air. Feeling eyes on him, he glanced to his right to see Malak and Zagan. The pair were dressed similarly to him, dark pants and long leather jackets, big heavy shitkickers on their size 19 feet. Malak was the talker of the group—if he could get close enough to someone, they would do whatever he willed. But then, they all had that ability. As Angels from the dawn of existence, they held a power that few humans could comprehend. But Malak had a way of twisting the humans so that they did his bidding without realizing they had been manipulated. His blonde hair and blue eyes, coupled with an easy smile and hard body, made him seem approachable, especially to women. It was a mistake people only made once. Malak was one of the Triad, as was Sariel. A group of three Fallen Angels, banished to earth and stripped of their status as Archangels by God for their sins. A sneer tipped his lips at the thought. He and his brothers had been walking this earth for a Millenia, watching as God’s children tore each other apart for lust and power, while he, Malak and Zagan were punished for much less. But they had been Archangels and so, the expectations placed on them were greater. They were to be beyond reproach, expected to act with pure hearts and selfless souls.Flicking the deadly Carnwenna dagger in his hand, he approached his brothers, his stride long and sure.“Did you find the other two?” he asked, knowing by their expressions that they hadn’t.“No, I told you the Shiwanna could not be trusted,” growled the dark-haired Zagan.Sariel ignored his angry outburst, watching the opening of the alley-way, with a guarded expression. His senses were primed and tingling with the knowledge that Demons were near. Gripping the dagger harder, his muscles tensed in readiness for the coming fight.“Demons!” Zagan spat as Sariel felt his brothers move, flanking him as they had done since time began. Adrenaline spiked his blood, heightening his already supernaturally expanded senses.A shadow fell over the exit, and he watched as five Demons ambled into the alley-way, their distinct white blonde hair making them stand out in the stormy evening light. A growl reached his ears, and he suppressed the urge to smile. These Demons were young, the distinct stench of burned popcorn that followed them around not as strong as older demons. They would be inept and inexperienced, but what they lacked in fighting experience, they would make up for with enthusiasm. This was just what he needed—a good fight to take the edge off the fury that raged through him. Killing the Demons night after night was accomplishing nothing, as they had increased vastly in the last ten years.Armed with the knowledge that the demons were spreading a disease to human women, the Angels realized that the situation was dire and more desperate than ever. Fighting them was not enough; they needed to drive them back into the fiery pits of hell where they belonged. The first demon launched himself at Sariel, their bodies colliding with the force of two Mack trucks traveling at high speeds. He felt the young Demon’s wrist snap as he swung his arm up, blocking the blow from the knife his enemy carried. With an upward arc of his arm, he slashed the demon’s throat, severing his carotid artery. Blood spurted over him as he dropped the demon to the floor. Flipping the demon over, he grasped the back of his neck, ripping the spinal cord that contained the brain stem from his lifeless body. Throwing it to the wet, dank ground, he watched as the body shriveled up before turning to dust. There was only one way to kill a demon, and that was to sever the spinal cord. Contrary to common beliefs, the heart was not where the soul resided; instead it was found in the tiny synapses that fired the brain, each thought, each memory locked into one small neuron.Sariel glanced at his brothers. The remaining Demons were turning to ash at their feet. He was disappointed that they hadn’t put up more of a challenge, finding himself becoming more bored of late. Roaming the earth and killing demons and evil spirits had lost its appeal, and he could feel himself becoming more jaded by the hour.“We need to follow the white-haired human,” Zagan began, but Sariel stopped him, not wanting anyone else near her, except him.“No, I will follow her. You need to find the location of Sandalphon and Mihael. They are the key to having this disease eradicated from human women.” Zagan tilted his head, watching him intently, and Sariel met his hard gaze, unflinching. With a nod, Malak and Zagan took to the air, their mighty black wings briefly casting a shadow over the night sky before they disappeared. It was a common misconception that Angels with black wings were servants of Lucifer, but that was only partly true. As on earth, there was a hierarchy. True Fallen Angels who did terrible deeds were indeed banished to hell and chosen by Lucifer to do the work of the Dark Lord, a final ‘fuck you’ to God from his disobedient children. But Angels such as himself and his brothers, who had just not lived up to God’s high standards, were banished to Earth to protect his proudest creation, although in their case, they had been stripped of the Archangel status and power as well. They were also given black wings, but they were always tipped in the color of their previous wings. His were a beautiful gold, Zagan’s a peacock blue and Malak’s a vibrant purple. They were easily recognizable and vastly known throughout the Universe as God’s Protectors on Earth. This made them targets, with only their fierce skill and feared reputation holding back all but the bravest or most stupid Demons or Evil from attacking them.Sariel kept his wings closed, hidden from the view of humans, and instead followed the scent from the white-haired human. She was a scientist who had inherited a relic from her ancestors that could be the key to saving the humans from extinction—something that the great man himself was determined would not be allowed to happen. He caught her scent as he crossed the crowded street, heading toward Grand Park and the Cathedral of Our Ladies of the Angels. It was where the sweetly scented human went every night to provide assistance to the homeless. He watched from the shadows of a derelict building as she moved about the kitchen, her movements light and smooth as if floating. Something about her drew him, and he knew that he didn’t want’ Zagan or, God forbid, Malek anywhere near her. Sariel had never felt love, not in the same way humans did. He felt compassion and protection, but never the soul-crushing feeling that humans described. It wasn’t that his kind were incapable of love, it was more that he chose to lock that part of him away. Another component of the triad’s punishment was that they were forbidden to act on feelings of love. The penalty meant giving up their immortal status to become human. If they chose to walk away from a relationship, then the human’s mind would be wiped, and they would not remember a second of what had been shared. Love and lust was what had placed his brethren and himself into this mess. By not controlling and watching Eve, she had broken the rules allowing lust and sexual desire to taint what God had created.Sariel had never even come close to feeling what he felt was a human emotion. Angels were superior beings and didn’t need love; power was their drug. But now here he was, entranced by his very own Eve, a direct descendant of the first female human. His body flowed with a heightened sense of need and desire for this woman, this inferior human, whose help they needed if they had any hope of stopping the demons from obliterating the race that God loved so much.

Free will is for both angels and demons too.
Sandra lacked the tools to identify a scorned soul when doctors handed her a perfect rosy bundle. She had no clue that her progeny, called Lilith, was actually a demon set on reclaiming her rightful companion. As years passed, the humble woman did her best to ignore doubts that crawled at her like the insects Lilith’s angelic lover obsessed over. Even then, she wanted to believe she was wrong and that Lilly was merely peculiar. But in the City of Eden, where all things seemed to begin and end, nothing was ever that simple.
In truth, Sandra knew. She couldn’t ignore it when her cunning spawn cut into adult life with a long resume of tools: Manipulation at the top, viciousness at the bottom, lies all over. Ordinary skills were unnecessary. Lilly could always find someone to do her bidding. A woman like Lilith didn’t need a helpful companion. She was nothing to the mortal she’d been created for. Neither was the woman, and Lilith’s nemesis, who’d come after her – Eve.
***
Adam, an athletic blond-haired graduate student studying the natural habitat of insects, had better things to do than listen to the brass words of a spoiled vixen like Lilly. This, of course, only enticed her. Lilith was willing to do whatever it took to earn her destiny. And, more importantly, this time, keep him in spite of Eve. But Adam had a few tricks of his own. He had learned to be cautious when dealing with temptation. Now, he merely sought a suitable helper. In the City of Eden, where all things are created, everything is possible.
There was only one thing no creator had ever accounted for: The vengeance of a determined temptress and the blurred turns of time to identify exactly who was who.
Excerpt:
Eve smirked, reaching out her hand for Adam. Pulling on his thick arm with her other hand, she couldn’t resist, “Come on Adam. This is just too much. Tell me what it is! All this waiting is making me crazy.” She’d tossed the next step right back at him, ignoring his suggestion to bring her glass. He knew she was wondering why they were headed for the studio as they'd promised no working today and the gallery wasn’t even open. Mortal man of the flesh or not, Adam wasn’t stupid. He picked up her glass, balancing it between the Chateau Lafite bottle and servant-made card in his one free hand. “I won't Eva—he liked calling her that when it came to serious matters simply because he could, and it made her twist her hair at the ends—you'll just have to wait until I show you.” They walked in giddy anticipation to the entrance of the studio before Adam finally stopped. “Here, let's fill up our glasses for the coming toast, shall we?” he asked, finally holding out the bottle and handing Eve her glass. When the red juice was spilled perfectly into their glasses, they continued on toward the painting. Adam could almost feel the heat coming off Eve’s body and certainly his own. It was time. “No way. Adam, no way,” she said, her mouth hanging open. “Yes Eva, I'm going to break my own rule and show you. It’s time for you to meet yourself―the way I see you,” he left a dramatic pause to linger before continuing and motioning toward the veiled painting. And then, “I'll show you...an angel.” With that, he pulled the sheet off the unfinished painting.Eve sucked in a sharp stream of air. She held it as she sipped at the myriad of colors on the thick canvas. She had no words as Adam watched for her reaction. He could not resist soaking up every nuance of her reaction: Her pink tongue wetting her lips, the way she moved with exaggerated steps to get closer to it, how she tilted her head just enough to tell him she was trying to make sense of it. Her blue eyes were wider than he’d ever seen them. Finally, she released her breath with an audible gush. “Oh. My. God.” Eve’s free hand came up with delicate a fingertip which she placed against her peach, lush lips. Now rooted in a small “O,” she tilted her head again, before repeating her words. “Oh. My. God.” He had no idea what this moment would ultimately do to her - changing their destinies forever. He did not know that angels and demons both have free will...
Author Interview:
~ Erin Lee ~
Who is your favorite hero of fiction?
I actually don’t have fictional heroes. To me, the real heroes are always nonfiction and probably people not many others know about.
What is your favorite journey?
My favorite travel journey was to Australia. I spent a whole summer there while in college interning at a newspaper. My “beat” was the Sydney Opera House.
Dogs or Cats?
Dogs. We have four.
What do you most value in a friend?
Loyalty and honesty.
What quality do you most admire in a woman?
An independent strong attitude that says, “I’ve got this.”
Where do you get your greatest ideas for writing?
By day, I’m a court appointed child advocate and a family therapist. I hear and see it all.
What is your Writing Routine?
I write long into the night when everyone else is asleep. I only sleep about four hours a day.
Does writing energize or exhaust you?
It energizes me. To make the characters in my head come alive is like creating my own universe.
What kind of research do you do, and how long do you spend researching before beginning a book?
Some of it comes from my everyday life as a therapist, but when writing things outside that realm, I research a lot. I have a Circus Freak Series where I actually took classes in high wire to research for the book Contortionist.
What are you working on now?
I’m continuing my work on the Circus Freak Series and have lots of short stories and an EL George book called Fix Me based on a true story of a child whose mother deliberating makes her children ill, Soul Less, book 17 in the Escape from Reality Series, and The Ghosts Who Raised Me, a paranormal YA book
What would your friends say is your best quality?
My ability to roll with the punches, get things done, and still enjoy life. Are reader reviews important to you?
Yes, very. Whether they are good or bad, I learn from them and use the comments to improve my next project. I love that strangers actually take the time to write reviews. That is a priceless gift.
Are there any nuggets of wisdom you can impart to aspiring writers?
Don’t give up. Every time you write, you improve. Join writers’ groups, get honest editing from people who will tell you the truth, and learn from your rejection letters. Someday, someone will see the value of your words because only you can tell that story.

Lee is also the founder of Crazy Ink, a small indie publisher specializing in multi genre works and anthologies because it takes all kinds of crazy.
Lee holds a master’s degree in psychology and works with at-risk families and as a court appointed special advocate. When she isn’t busy dissecting the human experience, she enjoys escaping from reality through reading and a myriad of crazy adventures that will probably one day get her killed. In a city of angels and demons, we learn who the real monsters are.
If Arija has to chase Kip down one more time, she just might kill him. But when she finds herself in the most beautiful city she’s ever seen, is it a paradise or is it hell?
Adal can’t believe he let Arija go into the portal alone. When he goes in looking for her, he finds himself in a hellscape. With a demon around every corner, Adal must find his girlfriend before it’s too late.
But someone watches from the shadows.
When heaven and hell collide, Adal and Arija must figure out who is there to help and who is a demon wearing an angel’s face. Will they solve the puzzle before it’s too late?
You’ll love this twisted tale reminiscent of The Labyrinth because of the betrayal, the temptation and the edge of your seat action.
Excerpt:
“Rowan, Matilda, please splay this creature out so we may start the ritual.” Ara winked as she stepped away from Adal. “Hold up!” Matilda and Rowan each grabbed him by the hip and swept his feet out from underneath him. As soon as he hit the ground, the sisters pinned him to the floor.“This will be fun,” Ara said as she sauntered back over to him.“Yeah, not that I wouldn’t find it the funniest shit ever, but I kinda need to ask you to not cut his dick off.”Ara cocked her head to the side, her eyebrows knitting together. Ypsilon pushed through the crowd of succubi, her hand poised over her pistol. “You wish to spare this one his fate?” Ara asked in shock, not looking the slightest bit concerned.Adal’s eyes lit up at the sight of his friend. Thank God for that crazy bitch! Now get me the hell out of here. “Well, not particularly. He’s kinda a huge dick, and shaving some off might make him more tolerable, but that will put a damper on my plans. So, here’s the deal: you let my associate keep his junk, and I won’t kill all of you. Fair?” Ypsilon said with a smile.“Who is this girl?” Matilda asked, digging her nails into Adal’s arm.“She’s not mortal. I cannot smell her soul,” Rowan added.Adal muttered under his breath, “You can’t smell something that isn’t there.”“Really, Adal?” Ypsilon shot him a look of daggers. “Not the best time to be a smartass! If you want, I can wait until after your trim to save you.”“Nah,” he grunted. “Just got it the length I like it.”Ypsilon rolled her eyes before turning back to Ara. Adal had to trust she would get him out of this. On her home planet, Ypsilon was chief of the smartest gang for a reason. She kicked ass and knew how to get her way. But how she planned to escape a room full of hundreds of demons was a question he couldn’t answer. “Enough of this! Why you don’t have a soul is irrelevant. I will tear into your chest and remove whatever heart you have. Then I’ll feed it to your man before removing his juicy bits,” Ara warned, turning all of her attention toward Ypsilon.“I don’t give warnings more than once. Let him go. If you don’t back the fuck off, I’m gonna hurt ya’.” Ypsilon took a step toward Ara. Her head came up to the demon’s shoulders.“You foolish creature. I will teach you your place, you snarky bitch,” Ara spat.A small smile played at the edge of Ypsilon’s mouth. It was gone so fast Adal wasn’t even sure it was real. His stomach tightened, his nerves on edge as his friend squared off with the succubus. Adal didn’t even hear the gunshot, the boom and muzzle flash almost masked by the panicked and infuriated howls of the spectating mass of succubi. Ara’s head rocked backwards as an oily substance erupted into the air, spraying the floor all around her. Adal only noticed that Rowan and Matilda had let go of him when his arms smacked against the dark marble floor.Ypsilon’s eyes were at half-mast as she relished in what he presumed was her first kill of the night. The look of pleasure on her face as she watched the smoke plume from the end of her gun's barrel was enough to make him grateful she was on his side. “God, I hate the word bitch.” Ypsilon turned and swung her gun back and forth between Rowan and Matilda who were shrieking at the death of their leader. Everyone else in the room stood frozen.“Anyone want a shot at the title of whore queen?” Ypsilon questioned as she looked from Matilda to Rowan and back again. She flipped Bangarang around her finger like a pistol in a western before expertly sliding him into his holster. “What’s it gonna be, ladies?”Matilda looked to Rowan, her lips curling into a snarl. “We will spill your blood, little girl.” The two succubi charged at Ypsilon. “For our sister,” they shouted in unison. She didn’t even flinch. In fact, Adal thought he could see a hint of a smile playing at the corner of her mouth. As Rowan reached her, arms outstretched like a zombie in a Romero movie, Ypsilon dropped and rolled the succubus over her shoulder, slamming her into the floor. Matilda swiped her claws, catching Ypsilon in the arm. “Mother fucker,” she yelled as she punched the succubus in the face. “Really? We’re scratching now?” She hit the demon with another hook to the head. Matilda stumbled backward, colliding with several of the spectators. One woman in the crowd jumped in front of Matilda, growling at Ypsilon, but Matilda raised a hand and the woman returned to her place. Ypsilon turned her attention to Rowan. The red-head came at her with a spin kick, hitting her in the side. Ypsilon stepped back to avoid the full hit, but tripped over Ara’s body, landing just next to Adal. “I get that this is a thing for you, but we aren’t covered in mud or oil. How about you not be useless and help save your own ass? Remember, they kinda want to cut off your junk?” “Shit, my bad.” Adal jumped up next to his friend. He wrestled in his pockets and pulled out his knuckles. “Really? You need to weapon up for this one?” Ypsilon chided.“Hey, when your dick's on the line, let me know and we can discuss what you want to bring to the table. Until then, I’mma do me. You do you.” Adal squeezed the metal weapon.
“What Arija sees in you is beyond me.”

Author Interview:~ Heather Marie Adkins ~
What is your greatest fear?
Death. I’m absolutely terrified of death. It started when I was little – I would have these horrible panic attacks about dying being nothingness and just not existing. Those continued well into my twenties, and when I finally came to terms with my fear, my stepdad died by suicide, which sent me into another existential dread crisis. It’s a debilitating fear.
Who or what has been the greatest love of your life?Writing will always be the greatest love of my life. When I met my husband ten years ago, I told him up front – I will always put my writing first. He knew before we ever fell in love that writing was the OG for me.
Which book have you read the most in your lifetime? The entire Harry Potter series. I make it a point to re-read it every year or two. It balances me, takes me back to my roots.

Dogs or Cats?Cats. I have 38 of them. (Not an exaggeration.) I’m a volunteer with a local cat rescue. We do monthly Trap-Neuter-Return clinics, and also pull cats from rural shelters to re-home.
What do you most value in a friend?Loyalty and reliability. We live in a world full of fake people doing shitty things to one another, dropping the ball on the responsibilities that don’t benefit them. The friends most important in my life value being loyal to me and I to them, as well as being the kind of person who will actually do exactly what they promise to do. I don’t do fake, I don’t do two-faced, I don’t do egos. Anybody with those traits can stay far away from my inner circle.
What quality do you most admire in a woman?Independence. I love my husband, but my sun doesn’t rise and set on his existence. As it shouldn’t, because I am my own woman with my own business, my own hopes, my own dreams and aspirations. My husband and I are a team, but he is not everything that makes me. I hate seeing women who base their entire existence around the man in their life. I believe the patriarchal society pushes women to view men as their lord and savior, and it makes me sick to my stomach. We should ALWAYS be our own lord and savior first. The love of our life is our consort, not our god.
What do you do as a hobby? My bestie Alex Owens and I just started our own paranormal podcast called Spirits & Spells. We’re both obsessed with podcasts (particularly the paranormal kind) and decided to dip our toes in the waters. It’s A LOT of research up front, but it’s also a lot of fun. If I’m not writing or doing other work (of which there are MANY responsibilities), I’m researching for the podcast or designing book covers.
What were some of the challenges you faced on the road to publication? My biggest challenge has been not doing things the right way. I leapt into publishing with the mentality that I could throw a book up online and watch the fans come running in. And that’s not how it works. If you don’t market yourself properly, and if you don’t finish the series you start, it’s a career killer. I’ve begun the process this year of recalculating my career for a better – and actually successful – relaunch.
Finally, what are we likely to find in YOUR nightstand? A half-finished margarita from the night before, a stylus I use to write on my phone in bed at night, a dog-eared book that’s taking me months to finish reading, and at least two cats knocking all that stuff off. About the Author:

Blurb:
A mistake brought a demon to her, a promise bound them together.
Demon Dolan Ciar embodies three simple words: desire, denial, and destruction. Every two years, he is allowed one night of earthly passion to punish a deserving female. By the time he is finished, his victims are left as willing receptacles for demons yet to come.
Since she was four, a demon has been the only constant in Leora Desmond's life, returning to her on every visit because of a promise he cannot break. Though he is in misery and suffering, as she grows he teaches her how to cope and to always go after what she wants. Now as an adult what Leora wants is wants Dolan, and she won't be dissuaded.
Returning again to ask for his freedom, he finds a demanding Leora who insists he make her his next conquest. The ultimate retribution would be to take from her the ultimate symbol of her selfishness. Dolan must decide if he can doom her to life in living hell or face his own set of unearthly consequences, while Leora must choose between her pleasure and her heart.
The Promise blurs the line between good and evil, desire and love, and promises and commitment.
Excerpt:
Leora knew he was here before she ever saw him. It was always the same, the tingle, the electric sizzle that indicated his arrival intensified. “I know you’re here.” Leora fought the urge to wrap her arms around herself and glance over her shoulder. Instead, she put her hands on her hips and straightened up. The echo of her designer stilettos tapping on the worn wood floor let out a much deeper and richer tone than her normal work pumps, but he would notice the difference. She closed her eyes and inhaled. The change in the air was palpable. Damn him to Hell for making her wait yet another two years. She shook her head. He was already in Hell. She would have to damn him somewhere else.Every minute he wasn’t here with her was one less minute she would have. She opened her eyes, glancing at her watch and the window. The sky was black. She returned her hand to her hip, not able to watch the seconds count down. “If you knew I was here, then why are you looking at the time?” His voice surrounded her as it did the first time she heard it. As a six-year-old, she would have called his tone strong. At twelve, it was healing. By the time she was sixteen, she would have called it sexy. Today, his voice was heated as it coiled around her, squeezing her, making it hard to breathe. “I’m bound to you.” His voice came closer, his footsteps echoed on the stairs. “How could you doubt me after all the torture I’ve gone through at your hands?” Doubt. She wasn’t certain doubt was the right word. More like anticipation. But always there was the nagging worry that he wouldn’t show. She supposed her disbelief was her punishment for having expectations. “No, you’ve never broken a promise to me. Not that I would allow it.” Once she gained her composure, was able to slow down her heart just a bit, she turned.Dolan never changed. Her whole body froze, reacting to his presence and allowing herself the time to take him in, though she knew every one of his features by heart.Until she got older, she didn’t realize how evil exuded from him. Different than monsters or devils, his evil was shrouded in dirty blond hair that grazed his shoulders, a face both masculine and beautiful, and one naughty dimple on the left side of his smile. No one who saw him would ever suspect who or what they had encountered.Only his copper eyes revealed he was something other than human.By the time she was a pre-teen, she knew enough to realize his body was sinful. His tall frame filled out his clothes, allowing her to assess every muscle, ridge and bulge. Tonight, he stayed true to his classic fit and style choices in a pair of black jeans and a matching button-down shirt. The only addition to his repertoire was her grandfather’s ring, something he still wore on the fourth finger of his left hand, as if to mock her.He tilted his head and tossed his sunglasses aside. “Are you ready?”“I was ready last time, and have nothing to show for it. I suppose I should be the one asking you that question.” She stepped forward, stopping less than a foot away from him. The back of her throat dried out, and she swallowed. “Am I finally worthy of a demon or do I end up with another limp dick?” Yes, she went for the jugular, if he had one. “Why don’t you open your eyes?” he hissed.A quick glance down put a swirl in her stomach. The bulge in his jeans crept down his legs. She trembled, but at the same time her mouth watered. She moved closer, step-by-step. “I suppose I get what I want after all.”As she reached out to touch him, he caught her wrist, holding her hand above her head. “I’m giving you exactly one chance.”“For what?” In utter defiance of him, she lifted her chin.“To release me, to save you, to save me.” His tone lowered.“I don’t need saving,” she countered. “For better or for worse, I will never allow you to break your promise to me.”He opened his mouth. She put her fingers over his lips. “You said one chance. I’m not taking it.” “All this time I have spared you.” He pulled her closer. “Never forget that.”She stared right into his eyes. No weakness was allowed tonight. “It’s me, Dolan. Me, or you can be celibate until the decade I do you the favor of dying. I don’t care about your pain.” She tensed, preparing for his retaliation. “I thought I taught you better than to make demands of a demon.” He pressed his palm to the side of her face.Heat radiated through her body, sending a warning to every one of her nerve endings. “A demon who comforts a child is a failure of a demon in my book.”His jaw tightened. “That was a mistake. An oversight.”“You came back.” Her heart rate increased, but she stayed her ground, pushing until she got her desired end. “You made me promise.” “Who says a demon keeps a promise? Aren’t you supposed to lure unsuspecting woman into your depraved traps? Why would you keep a promise to a mistake?” “Because I’m forced to.” He never took his eyes off her and moved his hand down her cheek to her neck. “Maybe the biggest mistake I made was not realizing how unsuspecting you are.” His hand traveled to her chin where he rested his thumb on her lower lip. “You only want what you want, and you don’t even know what that is.”“My wants are the only reality there is. I have the power.” Fire flashed in his eyes as she practically quoted him. His finger moved with her lip.“Fine, you will at last get what you want. Your reality tonight will be to see what a real demon can do.” He pressed his thumb down and smeared her lipstick down her chin.
She pushed herself into him. “Promise?”
