Poetry in Performance Jennifer K Dick and Lisa Samuels at VUB 18 November

Lisa Samuels and I will be talking and reading at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) University at 16h on the 18 November in the Pilar Huis Voor Kunst. See the poster above for full details. When you arrive at the Pilar Huis building, the room will be indicated clearly on the door, or just inside. I very much hope you can come hear us talk about performance and hear us both perform parts of Lilith (JKDick, Corrupt 2019) and The Long White Cloud of Unknowing (LS, Chax 2019).

Le dépaysement talk on Craig Santos Perez à Lyon 8 novembre 2019

Announcing that the 8 Nov 2019 at 18h: I will be giving a talk in French on "from unincorporated territory [lukao] by Craig Santos Perez at the 2 day (8-9 Nov 2019) international conference Le Dépaysement, Colloque international organisé par le laboratoire LCE, Université Lumière – Lyon 2. Organisers Pascale Tollance, Victoria Famin, Fabrice Malkani, and Axel Nesme.

Dépaysement : le cas de from Unincorporated Territory [Lukao] par Craig Santos Perez Jennifer K Dick, MdC, Université de Haute Alsace

L’auteur Craig Santos Perez écrit entre prose et poésie. Ses livres sont des sorts d’études d’histoire, de mémoires poétiques incorporant des collages textuels et visuels (« carte-poèmes »). Il « raconte » par des formes fragmentées de narration, par des histoires interrompues, la transformation qui est au cœur du dépaysement, un éloignement et un rapprochement paradoxalement simultanés. Perez est l’auteur de from unincorporated territory  (1. Hacha, 2. Saina, 3. Guma et 4. Lukao), une tétralogie qui mélange la langue anglaise et la langue Chamorro. Dans cette œuvre, il songe de remettre / re-dessiner sur la carte du monde le paysage oublié et effacé de son enfance (l’île de Guam). On pourrait dire qu’il tente d’incorporer ce territoire au monde. Guam, l’île de ses ancêtres, est un paysage de souvenirs et de langues ravagés par des colonisations successives. Le dépaysement (dans son cas un déracinement brutale par l’effacement de sa culture d’origine et la destruction de la nature) surgit de la modification radicale de ce « chez lui », en commençant par le nom même du lieu : Guam, Guåhan...               En étudiant from unincorporated territory [Lukao], le dernier livre de Perez, cette intervention explorerait des éléments qui relient les paysages réels (autobiographiques) de Guam et d’O’ahu à Hawaii et imaginaires (métaphoriques, mythiques et poétiques) pour montrer comment cette œuvre qui lutte contre le dépaysement pour son auteur crée un dépaysement pour son lecteur.

Lilith Launch Photos from last month

Looking back at September, a very busy rentrée month, I am still very very happy to have had such wonderful experiences of hearing great poets read, but also I was so very touched by the presence of new friends and old at the beautifully hosted launch on Sept 8th 2019 of my newest book Lilith: A Novel in Fragments (Corrupt, 2019). These are a few photos taken by The Red Wheelbarrow, Penelope Fletcher's revived and vibrant book sales space. Stop by and get books there, to keep them thriving. Of course, feel free to pick up a copy of my book, but you could also pick up copies of so very many wonderful books--among some of the poetry books there I saw she had a copy of Anne Carson's amazing box folio book NOX and collections by local poets as well of course as fiction, nonficiton and a very developped children's book section.

Reading and talking in hommage to Jacques Sivan

I hope you can join me as well celebrate the life and literature of poet Jacques Sivan on the 12th of Oct 2019 at the library Marguerite Auduox in Paris. Here is the documented information prepared by the Library for this event which I will read at:Soirée hommage à Jacques SivanVannina Maestri, Jennifer K. Dick et Jean-Michel Espitallier rendent hommage au poète Jacques Sivan dont le nom est synonyme d’une œuvre parmi les plus inventives et risquées de la poésie contemporaine. Readings will include work by Jean-Michel, Vannina and myself, works which are dedicated to Jacques as well as extracts we will read from Jacques' final book, NOTRE MISSION completed in the last years, and days, of his life, and which is just out from les presses du réel  Jacques Sivan commence à publier dans la revue TXT animée par Christian Prigent. S'inter-rogeant sur l'hétérogénéité constitutive de la langue, il explore ses potentialités visuelles et phonétiques en l'envisageant sous l'angle de la réévaluation et de la reconstruction perpétuelle d'un sujet forcément contextuel qu'il qualifie de « motléculaire ». Se pose ainsi en filigrane la question de sa légitimité toujours mise à l'épreuve, toujours mise en question. À partir de 1989, avec Jean-Michel Espitallier et Vannina Maestri ils fondent la revue Java qui deviendra un lieu de croisements des écritures expérimentales pendant quinze ans, jusqu'à son dernier numéro en 2006. Lié à son travail d'écriture, il a développé des lectures publiques en France et à l'étranger. Peu à peu s'ouvrant aux possibilités offertes par la tech-nique aussi bien au niveau sonore qu'au niveau visuel, il s'est mis à travailler avec des artistes musiciens ou vidéastes.  Il meurt à Paris le 13 février 2016.

The GREAT launch of the 10 year anniversary volume DOSSIER DES OUVRAGES EXECUTES (éditions la Kunsthalle Mulhouse, distribué par les presses du réel, 2019) from the Ecrire l'Art residency which I helped co-organize over this decade with the art center's director, Sandrine Wymann. 
Including our "avant-propos" in which we reflect on the experiences of having these authors in to write immersed within the exhibitions, this book designed by graphic artist Jérôme Saint-Loubert Bié brings together works by 21 authors in ways that visually and textually leave a trace of the time spent and the language which emerged during their brief stays in Mulhouse, immersed, each one, in one of the exhibitions at the Kunsthalle art space. Jérôme's creative design makes this a true object-souvenir.
This evening will include presentations of films made of 5 of the authors and their texts, readings by Frédéric Forté, Mickaël Batalla, Frank Smith and Eric Suchère and a reading by the new Ecrire l'Art, mode 2, resident Laura Vasquez, coming to Mulhouse from Marseille.  Why "mode 2"? Because the new format will be having a single author in residence on 4 occasions, for 4 weeks, to accompany the 4 annual shows of art at La Kunsthalle. The author will spend time writing, will meet the public within the space of la Kunsthalle and will also give talks/readings on the UHA campus as part of the partnership with the ILLE labo de recherche partnership. We are all very much looking forward to seeing where the next version of writing art goes!

ECRIRE L'ART le livre...Dossier des ouvrages exécutés

Finalement, après 10ans de rencontres à la Kunsthalle Mulhouse centre d'art contemporaine, on va fêter cela avec notre LIVRE Dossier des ouvrages exécutés, Ecrire l'Art avec un avant-propos par Sandrine Wymann et moi-même. So, after 10 years of organizing mini residencies for French authors, plus an Italian and a Lebanese author as well, we are proud to be seeing the culmination of the work in a book that is meant to trace the experiences we shared. There will be many events for this in French in France in the fall, and you can also order a copy via les presses du réel distribution hub starting in Sept 2019. But here is a sneak peek at the cover, by the amazing graphic artist who worked on this project, extending the collaborations into yet another realm, that of book making. Jérôme Saint-Loubert Bié

My new book LILITH: A Novel in Fragments will be out later this month with CORRUPT PRESS. I hope you will all keep an eye on the webpage for sales, and will help me set up readings in Europe and in the states in 2019-2020! Very excited about this book, and my forthcoming poetry collection THAT WHICH I TOUCH HAS NO NAME which should be out from Eyewear, London in 2020 (a year behind schedule, but therefore VERY much looked forward to, too!)

Some little announcements from last summer

Credit: Aflo/Naturepl.com from BBC Earth articleAs summer gets underway, I find I am back at writing the "nautical" poems, fittingly as I sit here next to the sea on Koh Phangan island in Thailand. But I am also getting around to sending out the ones I completed last summer, extracts which I read throughout the year in places such as Naropa University in CO, The New Orleans Poetry Festival or Berkeley Books of Paris. These are poems I polished over the year and, exciting news, the first of these Mean Low Water will be appearing with Estepa Editions, France as a mini-chapbook (Kate Van Houten is trying to decide whether these are a "Pocket Poemsé" series--of fold-open affordable artbooks printed in limited runs for the press) which will be out sometime in fall 2019.
Kate and I are also proposing a collaborative version of some other works from this collection to presses in the USA--so fingers crossed!!
On a more significant level, plese keep watching for news regarding the 2020 appearance of the full length books That Which I Touch Has No Name from Eyewear in London, UK and Lilith: A Novel in Verse from Corrupt Books 2019.
