Writerly Bonding

I've pretty much been absent from the Internet for about two days or so.
(I returned to 300 some-odd e-mails and nearly 500 blog posts in my reader. I've emptied the in-box for the most part, but I may just mark the blogs as read. I love the blogs I follow, but 500? Ain't happening, folks.)
I was offline for a very good reason: Heather B. Moore, K. C. Grant, and I were invited to speak at the Utah Library Association annual conference in St. George.
We were part of their annual break-out...

I DID IT!!!

It took a lot more work than I expected. I kept running into parts I thought I'd already fixed, plot holes I forgot I hadn't figured a solution for, and then plain old things like inconsistencies and the like.
But I did it. And with 1 hour, 58 minutes to spare. (But who's counting, right? :-D)
The murder mystery I've tentatively titled Trigger Point is officially submitted to Covenant!
This means that one commenter from THIS POST gets to celebrate with chocolate, and that person, according to...

Military Spouse Appreciation Day

Bet you didn't know that today's a holiday.
In 1984, Ronald Reagan proclaimed the Friday before Mother's Day as Military Spouse Appreciation Day.
Today is a time to acknowledge the sacrifices that the families of our soldiers make.
As one site put it:
While their husbands or wives took an oath and signed on a dotted line when they joined the military, spouses were enlisted through the back door with the vows they took on their wedding day.
Military spouses are practically as much a part of...

WNW: Why Is "Colonel" KER-nel?

After my post about lieutenant and why the English pronounce it with an F like luff-tenant (the post, by the way, that sparked Word Nerd Wednesday), several people asked a similar question about colonel:
Why is colonel pronounced with an R and TWO syllables instead of an L and three syllables?
At the time, I had no idea. I've since done some digging (thank you, OED and Professor Google, but mostly OED), and now I have an answer for people as nerdy as I am (ie anyone who loves weird language...

A Particularly Odd Writing Day

I've been splitting my time today between a freelance edit for a friend and my own revisions for my WIP. (Remember how I promised myself it would be ready to submit on May 10th? That's one week away, and I have two field trips I'm chaperoning between now and then, plus a book signing. YIPES!)
So I've had two windows up on my computer all day, and I've been swapping back and forth between them (and that's between attempts at conquering the mountain of laundry and dishes and other sundries).

Last-Line Blogfest

Today is I'm participating in my second blogfest. This one is writing-related and just looked fun.
Lilah Pierce of The Good Grief Writer is hosting today's fest, where writers put up the last several lines of something they wrote, whether it's the end of a chapter, a story, or an entire book. I thought it sounded like a ball, and I look forward to reading the other participants' last last lines.
We're allowed to include up to 25 lines (so there's enough back story for the final bit to make...

Ten Days

Ten. That's all I have left if I'm going to make my self-imposed deadline for getting the murder mystery turned in.
Right now, I'm calling it Trigger Point.
We'll see if they a) accept the thing and b) if they keep the title.
To date, the only book they've kept my proposed title for is Band of Sisters. And my husband came up with that title (I stink at them).
Long-time readers might remember that I submitted Spires of Stone with a header description of, "My Salt Lake Temple Book," and that...

WNW: Overheard

Still recuperating from the LDStorymakers Conference (short summary: BEST ONE EVER).
So in lieu of a regular Word Nerd Wednesday post, here's a video discussing, among other things, me as the Word Nerd.
The video was made by J. Scott Savage for the class he and James Dashner taught together at the conference. It supposedly shows how they came up with their topic.
(Pay close attention from 0:53 to 1:10. So. Awesome.)

The Mormon Writer Blogfest: Joseph Smith

Not long ago, blogger Krista V from Write. Mother. Repeat. approached me about participating in a blogfest with the aim at shedding some light on what Latter-day Saints believe.
My topic is one near and dear to my heart: The Prophet Joseph Smith.
But to talk about Joseph Smith, I have to back up a bit.
Latter-day Saints believe that following the Resurrection of Jesus Christ that His apostles had the required priesthood keys that granted authority to administer His church, perform ordinances...

Writing Journey: Lyon's Eleven

Lately when people ask if I'm working on anything, I almost laugh. I have a few too many pots in the fire and rarely know where to begin describing my current projects. (I'd appreciate it if the treadmill of my life slowed down just a tiny bit.)
As an update, a list:
1) Today and tomorrow, I'm at the LDStorymakers Writers Conference, in its 7th year. It's bigger and better than ever, and I'm thrilled to have been part of it since its inception. Saturday night at the Whitney Awards gala, I will...
