Why We Read Mysteries
Why We Read Mysteries

Mystery novels provide a mental escape. They allow us to temporarily suspend our disbelief and enter a different world. They are a form of entertainment that takes us away from our everyday lives.
Mystery novels also provide us with a sense of satisfaction. We enjoy trying to figure out the mystery before the detective does. We like to see how the detective solves the case and we like to see the bad guy get caught.
Mystery novels are also...

Kelly

Cameo Fox was attractive by anyone’s definition. A woman didn’t get to be a movie starlet without something giving her an edge, what people referred to as the “awe” factor, and she had it in spades, or hearts if I used a more accurate turn of phrase.
But her looks and celebrity had apparently attracted the unwanted attention of a stalker. Her agent wanted her away from the people crush in California and some place where the paparazzi would have a harder time finding her. Per the...

Rampone
I love airports, but I hate airplanes. I don’t like waiting for them. LAX
2014
The media dubbed him LAX because no one knew his real name. He had worked hard to keep it that way. As an assassin, it was his best life insurance.
He was crowned with the LAX label after a job in a terminal at the Los Angeles International Airport. It had been a bold murder, carried out in the thick of one of the busiest airports in the country. The murder was discovered two hours later, when a Southwest employee finally realized a man in a gray business suit had not moved from a benc...

Ghost
Ghost felt better after leaving his friends to enjoy their stolen beer. He went home and dressed himself in black, including a ratty ski mask he’d found in his father’s closet a few years ago. He had no intention of being seen tonight; he’d mastered the art of prowling about at night, keeping to the shadows, moving with breathtaking silence, just as if he were a ghost.
Ghost realized he felt more comfortable on his own as he knelt among a line of cypress trees boarding the tan duplex where R...

Prologue
1985
Since junior high, the boys had only referred to each other by the nicknames they had given themselves. It was a closed group with no other admissions. Ever. They were a family. Exclusive.
Ghost arrived before the others and sat on the floor with his back against the wall, waiting as the July sun melted behind the horizon. He wore a red tank top, naturally distressed jeans, and Converse sneakers. He lit a cigarette, took a deep drag and held it. The others would be along soon.
Stretch...
