A Writing Journey

ChantsMy first book, Chants, was published in 1984 by Arte Público Press at the University of Houston. I was an administrator at the University of Texas at El Paso when my first copy arrived. Thanks to my mom, I’d grown up loving books, libraries, and reading in the desert city of El Paso. How happy it made me to hold that little book Chants with my name on it.


Since then, I’ve published seven books of poetry for adults and young adults and three books of nonfiction, one a family memoir, House of Hous...

The Scheherazade Project: #101 Nights

Have you heard about the Scheherazade Project’s #101Nights? These women artists are counting down to Election Day, using their arts to “playfully, fiercely, creatively, lovingly call attention to the dire situation in our kingdom, its violence toward women, people of color, the undocumented, Mother Earth, weaker nations unable to protect themselves against the rampage and raping of their resources and people.”

August 2020: A Letter From Pat

Hi Girls and Boys,


This is a strange time in our country, isn’t it? Because of the pandemic, we wear masks even when we’re with our friends. We wash our hands more and practice social distancing. We don’t get too close to people except the family we live with.


Scientists are working to create a vaccine to protect all of us from the Covid virus. Once we have that vaccine, that OUCH, like the OUCH from our flu shot every year, will mean we can enjoy our usual life and run and play without masks.
