Book, Poster, Treat: Celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Children’s Day, Book Day

Triple Treat: Read a Book, Make a Poster, Enjoy a Treat

This 3-part activity is easy to do at school or at home: have children read or listen to a book, create a poster about it to decorate their room or home, and enjoy a treat. Bonus: share your posters with your family, friends, teachers and librarians.

Here’s a mini-poster for Children’s Day, Book Day with pictures by Rafael López:

Celebrate Children’s Day, Book Day

Twenty-five years ago, when I was having a radio interview at the University of Arizona in Tucson, I learned that Mexico celebrates a Day of the Child. I walked out into the sunlight, and I’ve joked that I was ZAPPED by the idea of initiating what became Children’s Day, Book Day. CDBD is a daily celebration of Children & Books with culminating celebrations held across the country on April 30th at libraries, schools, literacy organizations AND homes. We want and need all our children to be reader...

Celebrate Strong Women During Women’s History Month

A Library for Juana: The World of Sor Juana Inés
Though she died in 1695, Sor Juana Inés is still considered one of the most brilliant writers in Mexico’s history: her poetry is recited by schoolchildren throughout Mexico and is studied at schools and universities around the world. Here is the story of her life, an incredible one full of knowledge, achievement, and inspiration, lovingly told by Pat Mora and gorgeously illustrated by Beatriz Vidal. Read more.

This event symbolizes the Child being revealed to the World. In some countries, like Spain, that don’t have our Santa Claus tradition–although I think our Santa may have a world-wide following–it’s on January 6th that children receive presents.

My daughter, Libby...
