Today’s The Day – Personal Assignment is Live

Today’s the Day!

Personal Assignment ReleasePersonal Assignment is now officially released, in both digital and print.

As always with my new releases, I’m sharing royalties for the first month’s sales with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. And, because the book was available for pre-order, I’m adding those sales to my donation. Read a good book; help find a cure for a debilitating disease.

Reviews from early readers are already in:

From Muddy Rose Reviews: “Hold onto your hats, this one’s full of sinister twists...

I’m continuing my articles about my Great Galapagos Adventure. You can find Part 1 here.

**My next newsletter goes out on April 2nd. Make sure you’re signed up!**

There’s nothing that can prepare you for the reality of the Galapagos Islands. We’ve read about them, watched television documentaries, know that they’re full of wildlife, much of which can only be seen on the islands, but stepping off the panga onto shore and actu...

My Great Galapagos Adventure – Part 1

My Great Galapagos Adventure – Part 1

Back From a Trip of a Lifetime

Checking in to let everyone know I’m home—safe, sound, and of course, way behind. I have hundreds of photos to go through, laundry to do, and all the usual getting-home-from-a-trip stuff. Our trip began with a drive to the Denver airport two days after a major blizzard that had closed the Interstate (and all the back roads to the airport) for over a day. But we made it, dealing with long lines to check baggage because of all...

What’s on your Bucket List?

What’s on your Bucket List?

Bucket listLong before there were bucket lists, I had a “Places I’d Like to Go” list. From the time I was a child, I wanted to go to Australia (triggered, I believe by Disney television shows). And Alaska. And Africa. And after some National Geographic and Cousteau specials, the Galapagos Islands, even though they didn’t start with A.

My husband’s work sent him to Sydney, Australia, and I found a way to tag along. Another meeting was in Fairbanks, Alaska, and again, I managed...

Lean Mean Opening Scenes – Superstars Writing Recap 8

Lean Mean Opening Scenes – Superstars Writing Recap 8

Lean Mean Opening ScenesToday I’m recapping another workshop from the Superstars Writing Seminars, Lean Mean Opening Scenes presented by Angie Hodapp of the Nelson Literary Agency. Her advice is given with the thought of catching the eye of an agent. Again, I’m using bullet points to show the highlights of her talk. Any errors are mine.

Hodapp likened these to getting your baby to eat her vegetables by putting a bit of fruit on the tip of the spoon...

Personal Assignment Available for Pre-Order

Pre-Order Personal Assignment

Pre-order Personal AssignmentBased on an informal “survey” over at Facebook a while back, I had a lot of responses saying people liked to pre-order books. To that end, I’ve made Personal Assignment, my 9th Blackthorne, Inc. novel, available. It will release on April 2nd. If you pre-order, you’ll find the book delivered to your e-reader that day.

One stop shopping. Follow this link to pre-order a digital copy Personal Assignment from your favorite store. Print will be coming soon.

Writing Commercial Fiction – Superstars Recap 7

Story Elements, Parts 3 and 4

Story Elements: CharactersI’m continuing my recaps of Jeffery Deaver’s workshop on Writing Commercial Fiction, presented at the Superstars Writing Seminars. Again, these are Deaver’s ideas.
Time was short, and Deaver wasn’t able to go into detail about his last points, but I’ll offer them from his handout.

Story Elements: SettingLast time, it was Characters, the second element of a novel or story. Today it’s elements three and four, Setting and Dialogue. Again, these are bullet points from his handout, as time...

Writing Commercial Fiction – Superstars Recap 6

Story Elements, Part 2

Story Elements: CharactersI’m continuing my recaps of Jeffery Deaver’s workshop on Writing Commercial Fiction, presented at the Superstars Writing Seminars.  Again, these are Deaver’s ideas.
Time was short, and Deaver wasn’t able to go into detail about his last points, but I’ll offer them from his handout.

Last time, I talked about his four story elements, covering the first one, Plot, or Story.

Elements of Story: CharactersToday, it’ll be Characters.

According to Deaver:

1. We have to like our protagonist.
2. Create chara...

How Do I Find My Characters? I Advertise

Finding CharactersFor me characters are the most important part of a book, whether I’m writing it or reading it.

I’m over at Booklover’s Bench today, talking about how I found Frankie, the heroine of When Danger Calls.

I still have openings for Early Readers for Personal Assignment. You get to read the book before anyone else does. More information here.
