Mark Rubinstein didn’t invent the cat-and-mouse game, but he might as well have based on his blisteringly entertaining “Mad Dog Justice” (Thunder Lake Press, $12.99, 315 pages). Rubinstein firmly plants himself in the hallowed ground of Lisa Gardner and Harlan Coben, fashioning a nightmare out of normalcy. That’s what happens to Roddy Dolan and Danny Burns, an ordinary surgeon and accountant, respectively, who find themselves prey in a postmodern version of “A Most Dangerous Game.” Turns out they’re pretty good players themselves, as is Rubinstein in one of the toughest games of all — publishing. This second in his Mad Dog series moves at light speed toward a stirring climax that turns the tables in marvelously appropriate fashion.
