Hello Alleywalkers!

According to Japanese legend, folding a thousand paper cranes will grant you healing.
Evelyn Abel will fold two thousand if it will bring Luc back to her.
Luc Argent has always been intimately acquainted with death. After a car crash got him a second chance at life—via someone else’s transplanted heart—he tried to embrace it. He truly did. But he always knew death could be right around the corner again. And now it is.
Sick of hospitals and tired of transplants, Luc is ready to let his failing heart give out, ready to give up. A road trip to Oregon—where death with dignity is legal—is his answer. But along for the ride is his best friend, Evelyn. And she’s not giving up so easily.
A thousand miles, a handful of roadside attractions, and one life-altering kiss later, Evelyn’s fallen, and Luc’s heart is full. But is it enough to save him? Evelyn’s betting her heart, her life, that it can be.Right down to the thousandth paper crane.

Nembutal isn’t a name I recognize. One of Luc’s medications? Something he wanted to try that he couldn’t get here? He didn’t tell me anything about it. I Google the name and get an array of results: Nembutal (pentobarbital), sedative and anticonvulsant. Used to treat tension, anxiety, nervousness, and epilepsy. Pentobarbital may induce death in high dosages and is used for euthanasia in both humans and animals.

My legs nearly give out.

The night Luc went to the hospital, I saw webpages open on his phone on euthanasia in Oregon. It hadn’t seemed right, and I hadn’t been able to wrap my head around it at the time, and so I’d shrugged it off and never even broached the subject with Luc. He could have been looking it up for any number of reasons. Curiosity brought about by temporary desperation.

This, though? This is a step further. This makes me feel cold all over.

The bathroom door swings open and Luc steps out. I hadn’t even heard the shower turn off. He’s dressed in jeans and a T-shirt, towel around his shoulders, and he pauses when he sees me. “Evelyn?”

I could ignore it. I’m overreacting. I have to be…right? Yet I find myself turning to stare at him, holding up the business card and trying to keep my voice level. “What’s this?”

There’s a hitch in Luc’s step as he crosses the room to take it from me, and he won’t meet my eyes. “Just something someone gave me the other day. I don’t know.”

Any hope I had that this was some dumb misunderstanding is quickly fading. “Don’t lie to me.”

“It’s nothing,” Luc insists, pushing a hand back through his wet hair and turning away. “Just…don’t. I don’t want to—it’s not…”

“It’s not what? Not what I think it is?” My voice cracks near the end, and Luc goes still, as though he knows this entire conversation is about to hit the roof. I snatch my phone back up and read to him aloud: “Pentobarbital is contained in a group of drugs called barbiturates.”

“Evelyn…”

“Used to treat insomnia and seizures—”

“Evelyn.”

“—and for human euthanasia. Death in a bottle.” I lower the screen and stare at him, fighting back the overwhelming flood of tears threatening to reduce me to a complete mess. “Is that not what I think it is?”

Slowly, Luc turns to me, his expression one of guilt and grief and frustration. “I’m dying. You know that.”

I twist my fingers around my phone so tightly it hurts.“We’re all dying, Luc.”

“Some of us faster than others.”

The epic tale of Sienna Preston continues in this second installment of the exhilarating Deception Game series.

Seventeen-year-old Sienna is no stranger to heartache and loss. But this time, it's different; someone―or something―has tampered with a loved one's memories, and she's determined to get answers.

The trail leads her to the glittering skyscrapers and modern luxuries of Rubex, the Capital of Pacifica, where she infiltrates the government's Agency for Intelligence and Genetics. But answers are not always easy to come by, especially when her own memories may have been altered. Luckily, Zane Ryder is there to help her put the pieces back together, his devotion and concern muddying the waters between friendship and something more.

When Sienna gets too close to uncovering dark Agency secrets, she's framed for the murder of a prominent government official, sending her on the run. Sienna's heart may be torn about who she loves, but none of that really matters anymore―because the only thing that awaits her now is a death sentence.

(The Deception Game, #1)

Too pretty. Too smart. Too perfect.

In a crumbling, futuristic Las Vegas where the wealthy choose the characteristics of their children like ordering off a drive-thru menu, seventeen-year-old Sienna Preston doesn’t fit in. As a normal girl surrounded by genetically modified teenagers, all of her imperfections are on display. But after the death of her father, everything she’s ever known and loved changes in an instant.

With little skills to help provide for her family, Sienna clings to the two things that come easily—lying and stealing. But not all thief-for-hire assignments go as planned. When a covert exchange of a stolen computer chip is intercepted, she becomes entangled with a corrupt government official who uses her thieving past as leverage, her mother as collateral, and the genetically modified poster boy she’s falling for as bait.

In order to rescue her mother, there may only be one option—joining forces with the Fringe, an extremist group, and their young leader who’s too hot to be bad. Problem is, these revolutionaries aren’t what they seem, and the secrets they’re hiding could be more dangerous than Sienna is prepared for. In the end, she must be willing to risk everything to save the one thing that matters most.

IWSG~Writing Heroes

Well, it's the beginning of another month, which brings about reflections on writing, life, insecurities, and encouragement. And like always, a large group in the writing community comes together through the Insecure Writer's Support Group to share. Go HERE for more participants or to participate.
Can you believe it's another month? March, already. Geesh... And I still have some Christmas garland framing the front door of my house. No, I'm not one of those people who leaves half their decorations up until next year's season. It's just that we have so much snow out front we can't get to it, and my husband rigs the front door with a nail to seal it better for the winter; thus, I can't open the door either. Can you say fire hazard? Good thing we have a mudroom. But it's what you get for living up here in snow country.
I don't want to concentrate on insecurities this month. I'd rather celebrate. Celebrate what, you ask? A very influential writing force who had enough persistence that he persevered even when a writing career looked bleak. Oh, and he's one of my all-time favorite author inspirations.
HAPPY (early) BIRTHDAY, DR. SEUSS!                         MARCH 2, 1904
Too many of his books are amazing for me to pick just one. But I will say that I can probably recite at least eight of them; maybe nine. THE FOOT BOOK was a fav with my kiddos.
Let me leave you with a bit of the imagination master's wisdom. Enjoy your month!

What's your favorite Dr. Seuss book?

Brenda Drake Shares Wisdom & Guardian of Secrets (Library Jumpers #2)

I am so excited to have this author and her latest book take a stroll through YA in the Alleyway! She's not only paying a visit to celebrate all the pretties of her latest tale. But also to share some writerly wisdom with you. For you writer folks out there, if you've ever trudged through the transition of carrying your story from book 1 to book 2 then you'll want to listen up. I can't wait to read what she
has to say! So please give a warm welcome to NYT Best Selling Author Brenda Drake!

"How to successfully move from the end of book 1 to book 2 in a series." (Methods, fun, continuing threads...)by Brenda Drake
Writing a series takes a lot of care and mapping out each book with one central plot that arcs over all the books in the series. When moving from book one to book two in the Library Jumpers series, I had to weave in many things introduced in the first book into the second one. Keeping a story bible filled with details on characters, settings, and the rules of the world you’ve created.

World-building is so important in my fantasy book. I have to keep track of how the magic works, what’s the rule of the land in the Mystik realm, the cultures in the havens and covens, and the environment in each one. This also goes into the story bible. Keeping one is very helpful when I forget what a character looks or haven looks like.

Each of my books in the Library Jumpers series has its own arc and threat. At the end, there’s a resolution to that threat, but there isn’t one for the plot arc that arches over all three books. I leave my readers with a “happy for now” feeling at the end of each book. Writers of series need to decide if they’re going to end each book on a cliff hanger or do as I do with mine.

It’s important to keep the voices the same across the books in a series. I’d read a chapter in book one before starting to write book two. To get back into my narrator’s voice. Setting is important in a series. It’s like its own character and should feel the same throughout the series. The details matter and they should be the same in all books of the series. You don’t want everything to stay the same. Introducing new characters and new places will keep the reader interested in the world you’ve created.

A great way to keep track of the characters and settings in your story is to create a Pinterest board. I have one for each of my books. It helps to look back at book one’s board while I’m writing book two. You don’t have to make the board public. I only make mine public after a book releases. You can also do your own story board on poster and keep it by your desk if you don’t like doing things on the computer. Anything, to help you visualize your world will work.

Staying organized and jotting down all the important information about your world will help you transition from one book to another in a series. What tips do you have that help you keep organized while writing?
Brenda Drake is a New York Times bestselling author of Thief of Lies (Library Jumpers #1), Guardian of Secrets (Library Jumpers #2), Touching Fate (Fated Series #1), and Cursing Fate (Fated Series #2). She grew up the youngest of three children, an Air Force brat, and the continual new kid at school. She hosts workshops and contests for writers such as Pitch Wars and Pitch Madness on her blog, and holds Twitter pitch parties on the hashtag, #PitMad. When she’s not writing or hanging out with her family, she haunts libraries, bookstores, and coffee shops, or reads someplace quiet and not at all exotic (much to her disappointment).

Guardian of Secrets (Library Jumpers #2)by Brenda Drake
Release Date: February 7, 2017Publisher: Entangled Teen
Description: Being a Sentinel isn’t all fairytales and secret gardens.

Sure, jumping through books into the world’s most beautiful libraries to protect humans from mystical creatures is awesome. No one knows that better than Gia Kearns, but she could do without the part where people are always trying to kill her. Oh, and the fact that Pop and her had to move away from her friends and life as she knew it.

And if that isn’t enough, her boyfriend, Arik, is acting strangely. Like, maybe she should be calling him “ex,” since he’s so into another girl. But she doesn’t have time to be mad or even jealous, because someone has to save the world from the upcoming apocalypse, and it looks like that’s going to be Gia.

Maybe. If she survives.

GOODREADSFor your convenience, here's the first book in the series.
Description: Gia Kearns would rather fight with boys than kiss them. That is, until Arik, a leather
clad hottie in the Boston Athenaeum, suddenly disappears. While examining the book of world libraries he abandoned, Gia unwittingly speaks the key that sucks her and her friends into a photograph and transports them into a Paris library, where Arik and his Sentinels—magical knights charged with protecting humans from the creatures traveling across the gateway books—rescue them from a demonic hound.

Jumping into some of the world's most beautiful libraries would be a dream come true for Gia, if she weren’t busy resisting her heart or dodging an exiled wizard seeking revenge on both the Mystik and human worlds. Add a French flirt obsessed with Arik and a fling with a young wizard, and Gia must choose between her heart and her head, between Arik's world and her own, before both are destroyed.

IWSG~Living The Honor

Everyone likes to win. We've all had someone in our lives cheer us on, whether it be in the Arts, Athletics, Academics, or Another Personal Skill. And I'm sure most of you have heard that it's not about winning, but about doing your personal best. Wisdom like this is character building and matures a soul in their journey of life. BUT...
Let's be honest. No one really likes to lose. Coming up short of winning whatever prize you're after can conjure doubt that you have any skill at all, that you should have tried harder, or that - gosh forbid - you shouldn't have tried at all. It can make you question the road you've chosen to even get to this point. The winner's circle possesses a euphoria all its own. And no matter what goal you're chasing after, when you finally catch it and make it heed to your talents you feel like you could fly.
But what do you do with that winning sense, that high that comes with learning you're on top?
Recently, I've been blessed with a bit of winning of my own. As some of you already know, my middle grade novel Motley Education has been named 1st Place Winner 2016 New England Book Festival, Children's Category. (What you don't know yet is that I received an email two days ago informing me that Motley has won another award! I am beyond humbled, but that will be for another post.)
When I learned that Motley had won an award my first reaction was "No way. It must be a typo." I felt incredibly unworthy and, frankly, even embarrassed. Who the heck am I that my work just got recognized? And before you pat me on the back to encourage me, look at yourself. Look how talented you are and all you've accomplished with your writing. How could I compare to that?
This past weekend, my husband and I attended the 2016 New England Book Festival literary awards ceremony held in Boston, MA. Top literature in an array of categories from science and general fiction to young adult and children's books were honored. Winners, runner-ups, and honorable mentions were in attendance as well as publicists and publishers accepting awards on behalf of their authors. Upon accepting their award, authors were inviting to share a bit about their award-winning book and its journey to publication.
I won't tell you about my little acceptance speech. What I want to share with you is something I learned from another author there. She began her speech not about herself or her award-winning book, but about how important it is to embrace and honor the accomplishment. She, too, had felt unworthy like I did and would much rather have swept it under the rug so no one could see it. But she had a wise writing mentor who changed her mind. He told her taking ownership that her work has been recognized above other works in her field will only fuel her confidence to work harder exploring human existence through tales that move the heart, mind, and soul. But to do this, she must give herself permission to embrace the achievement. Let it be the frosting on the literary cake she's already baked and enjoy the dessert. Sure, she'll bake more literary cakes, and sure someone else's work might get recognized over hers. But this one belongs to her. And along with her humbled appreciation and gratitude of the award, she must honor the honor by believing that she is worthy of it.

AS RED AS BLOOD by Salla Simukka

YA in the Alleyway is my meme to give young adult literature the spotlight it deserves. It also gives YA authors the opportunity to share their signature with the world!
Here's is a very special feature.
AS RED AS BLOODby Salla Simukka
Publisher: Crown Books for Young ReadersRelease Date: January 17, 2017 (1st published 2013)Pages: 256
I'd like to thank the publisher for supplying me with an eARC in exchange for an unbiased review.
Description: Lumikki Andersson has made it a rule to stay out of things that do not involve her. She knows all too well that trouble comes to those who stick their nose where it doesn’t belong. But Lumikki’s rule is put to the test when she uncovers thousands of washed Euro notes hung to dry in her school’s darkroom and three of her classmates with blood on their hands. Literally.
A web of lies and deception now has Lumikki on the run from those determined to get the money back—no matter the cost. At the center of the chaos: Polar Bear, the mythical drug lord who has managed to remain anonymous despite hosting lavish parties and having a notorious reputation. If Lumikki hopes to make it out alive, she’ll have to uncover the entire operation.

Even the cold Finnish winter can’t hide a culprit determined to stain the streets red.

COVETED! A MUST READ!
My Splat: Daring and evocative, Simukka has weaved together an intoxicating tale of corruption, family lies, and one girl who's strong enough to be true to herself.
Without a doubt, the author's voice is what struck me first. Commanding and raw with a flair of grunge, it threads through the first few scenes knitting the start of a complex tapestry that splinters in all directions. The opening was not what I expected when I was asked to read. The scene seemed to come out of nowhere and I couldn't figure out how it would fit into the blurb of story world. No worries. It does. I literally couldn't put this book down.
This story blooms through the everyday life of Lumikki Andersson and her subtle childhood connection to Snow White. Yes, the Snow White. Trust me, it's not what you think. Mentioning this detail doesn't give anything away other than to put on display a brilliant tactic the author uses to share her female lead with her audience. This tidbit also reveals an unfortunate plight many high school aged kids go through - the exact tidbit I'll keep secret so you can find out when you read it. The world building is solid, painting a vivid picture of a frigid Finland and Lumikki's what, where, and with whom. One fact I found interesting is that, regardless of being in her final year of high school, she lives alone in her own apartment and pretty much takes care of herself. Her parents are around. She actually has somewhat of a solid relationship with them, though there's this underlining tension she feels from them.
Lumikki is a strong teen, a female individualistic with a nonchalant attitude. Wise beyond her years, she's what I'd call 'street smart' and she cares about things on her terms. Yet, beneath her survival exterior wafts a soft layer of emotions that she shares with very few; at the tale's onset - with no one. Why would she? In her mind it's senseless to invest herself in things or people that will soon change.
A brokenness that I couldn't put my finger on shadows this female lead throughout most of the book. Hints were cleverly sprinkled around the main conflict and the world building, slowly building to expose Lumikki's inner feelings.
Most notably is the structuring of this tale. Initially, the writing style tripped me up. It felt choppy, like thoughts left unfinished, but made me stop to think. To think, not to reread what was written. As jumbled as events might seem read individually they are that much rightly placed with considered collectively - here lies the rhyme to the author's reason. This method of scattering character and story details was effective and told me more about the world Lumikki lived in without saying a word. It was brilliant and intoxicating. Adding to this, the sentences aren't lyrically or poetically weaved together, but spoken plainly and boldly - just like Lumikki.
I would recommend this book to young adults to adults, suspense and thriller admirers, and anyone with a love for edge like found in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.    This is just a little side note. I'm normally not a huge fan of fantastic book stories adapted to film, but in this case I have to tell you that I'm thrilled this is being made into a movie. It has the right rawness with underlining feels that will attract a large demographic and audience. I think it will do amazingly well.
What are your thoughts on books doppelganging to film?

Reflecting Back, While Forging Ahead

Do you find the beginning of every new year as redundant as I do? I'm gonna lose weight. I'll exercise more. We'll have more family time. I won't be at the office so much. The list is endless. Why do we think the end of a calendar year gives us permission to start anew? Who set that cliche?
Each and every single day is a new beginning. Think of the sun setting as a really-really-really short (albeit unofficial) new day eve. Why not? Why can't you? Because you've been trained to go through the motions of everyday like the one before? Because doing differently would take effort, brainpower, and passion, and you gave up most of that long ago just to get through each day? What is the point?
I'll do it tomorrow because I've had a tough day at work ... at school ... in traffic. Yeah, we've all said something similar to ourselves. So what can bring about change in the complacent mind? Give inspiration and a sense of reason, purpose? One simple word: HOPE.

Strangely, that's my word for 2017. When I found out I was like 'Seriously'? Not focus or kindness or fortitude. I get hope. Talk about cliche. Everybody hopes for stuff, like for the light to stay green so they can get through traffic. But then I stopped to think about it for a moment. I didn't really want a different word; I wanted a different reason to reflect on where I am, what I've accomplished thus far and fuel me to forge ahead into the great unknown of a new year day. So I picked a bunch.

Go on. Try it. Pick any word. Pick them all, just go out there and DO something. Live today, not just for tomorrow.  You thought my next words would be because tomorrow might never come. Nope. Guess what? Tomorrow might and most probably will come, but how much better are you for it? How much better are others that you're still here? Ponder each day as you fall into slumber at night. Give yourself an atta girl/boy for your successes and reflect on a failure. Mull over a solution.
Make each day count.Live vibrantly. Love passionately.See the unseen around you. Look harder. It's there.Cherish the beauty and let it inspire you.Be you. Always you.Embrace your gifts. They're yours for a reason. You are unique. Be genuine, kind. Smile even when you don't feel like it. Why? Because you can, and it takes less effort than frowning.Open the door for a stranger. Do a good deed and don't tell anyone.Challenge yourself to be more than you thought you could be.And when you get there, push just a little harder. For in there lies your growth. Believe in magic.Dream big.
I wish you the light of the stars, the caress of the wind, and all the happiness you share with others. May today and everyday throughout 2017 be all you make them to be.
(The purpose of the IWSG is to share and encourage, posting on the first Wednesday of each month. You'll find writer doubts and concerns without fear of appearing foolish or weak. My Review | PurchaseFROM THE GRAVEby Cynthia Reeg
Description: Monster is as monster does, but Frankenstein Frightface Gordon is totally the wrong shade of ghastly green—pale, baby blue, in fact—and he's more concerned with keeping his pants neat and tidy than scaring the pants off his victims. But when a new law is passed to rid Uggarland of misfits such as Frank, he must decide if he will become the monster his parents can be proud of or be the monster he can be proud of. Trusting the monsterliest monster he knows, Frank looks to the grave and his dead grandmother to make his choice, entering into an adventure that will either seal his doom or prove he is truly monster enough.  Goodreads | Purchase

THE HAUNTED HOUSE PROJECTby Tricia Clasen
Description: Since her mom died, Andie’s family has crumbled. Instead of working, her dad gambles away insurance money, while her sister, Paige, has put her future on hold in order to pick up extra waitressing shifts. Andie’s afraid of what will happen if people find out just how bad things are. She’s not sure how long she can hide the fact that there’s no food or money in the house...or adults, for that matter.
When her science partner suggests they study paranormal activity, Andie gets an idea. She wants a sign from her mom—anything to tell her it’s going to be okay. Maybe the rest of her family does too. So she starts a project of her own. Pretending to be her mother’s ghost, Andie sprays perfume, changes TV channels, and moves pictures. Haunting her house is Andie’s last hope to bring her family back into the land of the living. For anyone who loved Counting by 7s, The Haunted House Project is a journey through loss and grief, but ultimately a story of hope and self-reliance. As much as Andie has been changed by her mother’s death, the changes she makes herself are the ones that are most important.

When Brine and Peter get themselves into a load of trouble and flee, they blunder into the path of the legendary pirate ship the Onion. Before you can say "pieces of eight," they're up to their necks in the pirates' quest to find Magical North, a place so shrouded in secrets and myth that most people don't even think it exists. So how does all of this play into a final fear or insecurity for 2016? Easy, just look at all the work so many talented writers accomplished. Yes, I was blessed to be part of it. But, honestly, can I keep it up? Do I have what it takes? Will life constantly keep getting in the way? My debut young adult novel is releasing in March, and I'm so far behind with all my other writing I wonder if I'll be able to pull it all off.
I could go on and on with those sorts of questions, but I won't. Instead I'll give you my answer to these questions, anymore like them clogging up the highway to my creativity, and to give you a little inspiration for the upcoming year. My answer is simply one word: YES. And you have what it takes, too.
Note: Speaking of the new YA, if you'd like to help out either revealing the cover or being part of my blog tour feel free to leave a comment below or enter your name HERE . I'll get in touch when I know more.
