Return to Dominaria episode 4 is up: https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/magic-story/return-dominaria-episode-4-2018-04-04

Couple of things for Tuesday

I'm doing a signing for The Murderbot Diaries: Artificial Condition at Murder by the Book in Houston, TX, on May 12 at 4:30. If you can't be there, you can order the novella, or any other of my books the store can get, and get them signed and shipped to you: https://www.murderbooks.com/event/martha-wells

The Con-or-Bust fundraising auction is going to start April 9: http://con-or-bust.org/2018-auction/ Right now they're still taking donations of items to auction. Con-or-Bust helps people of color attend SF/F cons.

Tomorrow (April 4) the fourth story in Return to Dominaria will be posted, and it's one that can be read as a stand-alone story, so if you've been wanting to check it out but hesitated because you didn't know the background, this might be a better one for you: https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/columns/magic-story

I have an appointment today with an arthritis doctor, so wish me luck.

Hugo Nominations!!!

Okay, here's an actual semi-coherent blog post.

So it looks like I'm not imagining this whole thing and I really do have two Hugo nominations.

!!!!!!!!!!!

The Murderbot Diaries: All Systems Red is a finalist in Best Novella

AND

The Books of the Raksura is a finalist in Best Series

I have been absolutely out of my mind since I found out last Friday. I got the emails early Friday morning, and ran downstairs to show my husband the Best Novella nomination before I realized there was a second email for Best Series. I was so hopeful and so not expecting that.

All Systems Red
Thanks so much to my agent Jennifer Jackson, to my editor Lee Harris and to Irene Gallo at Tor.com and cover artist Jaime Jones, and Kevin R. Free who narrated the audiobook version. I didn't expect all this to happen for my little robot story.

The Books of the Raksura
(The Cloud Roads, The Serpent Sea, The Siren Depths, Stories of the Raksura I: the Falling World & The Tale of Indigo and Cloud, Stories of the Raksura II: the Dead City & the Dark Earth Below, The Edge of Worlds, and The Harbors of the Sun)

The only previous award any of the Books of the Raksura have gotten is Matthew Stewart's Chesley Award for Best Paperback Cover for The Cloud Roads. I've worked on this series for eight years, and the reader reaction to it has been everything I would have wanted. This award recognition for Best Series feels like an impossible dream that somehow came true.

The Books of the Raksura brought my career back from the dead, and I want to thank my agent, Jennifer Jackson, my editors at Night Shade Jeremy Lassen and Janna Silverstein, and at Skyhorse Cory Allyn and at Start Jarred Weisfield. And Christopher Kipiniak, who is the voice of the Raksura in the audiobooks. And cover artists Matthew Stewart, Steve Argyle, and Yukari Masuike. And the readers, fanfic artists, and fanfic writers who recommended the books to their friends and kept the series alive.

Congrats to all the nominees! https://www.tor.com/2018/03/31/2018-hugo-award-finalists-announced/

Book Quote Wednesday and Review

Here's a quote from Roque Protocol, the third novella in The Murderbot Diaries, for Book Quote Wednesday (#bookqw on Twitter)

https://marthawells.tumblr.com/post/172342855952/its-bookqw-book-quote-wednesday-on-twitter-and

And Artificial Condition (coming out May 8) got a great review in the upcoming April issue of Booklist:

"Murderbot is one of the most delightful characters in current science fiction: a killing machine who chooses to be a good person, a robot who suffers from crippling social anxiety, a sarcastic misanthrope who really just wants to be left alone to watch TV. The relationship between Murderbot and ART (the intelligent ship) adds an entertaining The Odd Couple element to the story."

Neat Murderbot Article

https://www.tor.com/2018/03/21/life-lessons-from-a-murderbot-reading-all-systems-red-as-a-trans-woman/

For me as a trans woman, All Systems Red’s concoction of heartbreak and ever-present anxiety felt achingly familiar to me (even as Murderbot’s narration and dry delivery cracked me up more often than not), as I looked back at various pressure points in my own transition. The novella has a lot to say about building a personal identity on the fly.
