90 Day Novel Exercise-Character Sketch
I just downloaded the writing book 90 Day to Your Novel on my Kindle. One of the exercises is to go back and do a character sketch.
Well, it's been awhile since I last did this with my characters in CROSSED OUT. Right now I've been working on the sequel. I had fun going to one site to chose photos that kind of reflect my image of my characters. **This would be kind of fun to do if you were putting together a play, movie, or even video!
STEPHANIE
Since we last heard from here she seems to have more going for her. NOT. She's sixteen, still has a trust issue going on with her mother and yes, the dead still visit her. Let's just say she'll find out more about her calling and how her own family is involved.
She loves chocolate, Dylan, art, and just being what could pass off as being normal. Too bad it doesn't seem to last.
DYLAN
Dylan's seen alot and still not sure what to do with all this. And that includes his relationship with Stephanie. More stuff is going to be thrown his way** Hey, it wouldn't be a story without some conflict!
Dylan loves hitting the next big wave, the ocean, Stephanie(though she confuses him more than he'd like), his classic Toyota truck, and also leans strongly on his faith.
CURA
Cura's kind of been held in the dark about Stephanie's extra curricular activities and let's just say in CROSS FIRE, this comes to a head. I mean, they are BFF, right? So why the flippin' secrets? She's going to become more active and even will play a more central part.
Cura loves hitting Forever 21, friends, texting, huge double chocolate chunk cookies, playing with haircolor, honesty, and Ruby's.
HILLARY
Oh, Hillary. Seems the whole Karma thing is going to come around and bite your little size 0 tush big time in this sequel. She'll find out more about Stephanie that she wants to. Yes, she'll still be a b*tch but I'm fleshing her out more to show some of her fears and vulnerabilities especially over something that 'happens' to her. Can her and Stephanie become friends again? Maybe...or not.
Hillary loves being in the spotlight. She's even listed in the local talent agency book as a model though she doesn't like the hard work. Ps-ssh, that's our little secret. She loves shopping, being around hunky college guys, facials, energy drinks(which are so great for dieting), and tanning booths.
I'm still looking for photos of Dr. Anthony and Stephanie's mother plus another family member who shows up with a secret that will affect everyone and not in a good way.

Friday Five
Lots of books this week! Got to love that!
1. MY BOYFRIEND IS A MONSTER
Fun graphic novel of a girl who's boyfriend just happens to be the son of Frankenstein. Review coming soon.
2. STAY
This story intrigued me. It's about a teen who's boyfriend gets a little too obsessed with her.
3. TWELVE GRADE KILLS
I purchased this book from Scholastic Tab book orders. I'm a huge Vlad minion. Was really excited to get the final book in the series.
4. WITHER
I received the .pdf file from the publisher a while back but couldn't get it on my Kindle. I tried reading it on my laptop but my battery ran out. I ended up purchasing it when it came out this week. I really enjoyed what I'd read earlier. This is a YA meets the Handmaiden's Tale. Can't wait to finish it!
5. How To Grow Up And Rule The World
I swear I had to grab this book back from my son who totally loves it. Hilarious tale that is sure to appeal to grades 4 and up.
**Guilty pleasure:
Today getting a long needed pedicure. Debating if I should bring this bottle of nail polish I purchased in Cabo. It's supposed to change color in the sunlight. Or I might do the blue and white thingy again.
***Also will finally go tomorrow and watch RED RIDING HOOD. I know some people are making fun of it but I've been wanting to see it for a while now.
One movie that looks intriguing is SUCKER PUNCH:

1. The recent Japanese earthquake and now nuclear diaster have been freaking me out. I keep telling myself I need to get our 72 hour kits ready. We live very close to a nuclear plant which is located in San Clemente. Husband told me if what happened in Japan happened here, we'd have similar issues with our nuclear plants.
Need to tell myself, I won't freak out. My heart goes out to the Japanese people. There's an auction going on to help with relief. Kidlit4Japan :http://kidlit4japan.wordpress.com/
I want to donate copies of CROSSED OUT to help.
2. Physicist Michio Kaku tells what he would do to help with the nuclear diaster in Japan.
**I watched all Dr. Kaku's Discovery shows on using physics in sci fi. Fascinating. I just hope the Japanese authorities listen to Dr. Kaku before it's too late.
3. Got this book:
4. Also this book:
**Very excited about this book! Loved RAISED BY WOLVES.
5. Also my copy of this book came:
It's a children's book on Audrey Hepburn! I'm very excited about this book! **Who says kids and teens don't know who she is?
**Guilty pleasure today:
Since husband is working from home I hope to sneak in to watch BEASTLY. Alexx Flinn has also worked with the fab Joyce Sweeney. I've been wanting to see this movie for some time now.

Day Six of our Cruise
Today I skipped going to the gym and thought I'd sleep in only to be woken up at 7am by the captain announcing that the reason we weren't in Cabo's port was because of the recent Japanese earthquake and that we had to wait for word from the Mexican government to see if we could come back in.
Confused, I turned on the TV and watched in horror at the news:
8.9 earthquake hits Japan. Tsunami warning posted for all of the Pacific Coast.
We had to wait out in the middle of the Pacific Ocean as NO ports throughout the West Coast, including Mexico, were open.
7am became 8am.
Still no word.
We watched in horror as the tsunami hit Japan. Son was afraid we'd get hit too.
It wasn't until 11 am that our captain made a decision to go back to LA. This meant we couldn't go to the Cabo beach as planned. But we were just thankful we hadn't been in Cabo when the Japanese earthquake did hit. I couldn't even imagine being stuck in a foreign country minus passports(which were on the Disney ship).
The waters outside were almost too calm. Then not much later the waves were crazy. Even with my sea sickness patch I got sick. I lost my footing more than once as the floor went up and down.
Scary.
Disney was really good about everything. They refunded our excursion cost. They also had other activities planned. Son went to Oceaneer lab and husband and I went to an extra showing of a Disney movie.
All the while we kept watching CNN in disbelief. I felt for the Japanese people. So much tragedy and loss.

1. It's been crazy trying to get everything ready for our cruise. We leave on Sunday! We don't want to do the formal dinners but I'm still trying to talk husband into doing at least a couple 'nice' meals. Also grabbing a few non-review books to throw into my suitcase. I'm still thinking of downloading a few books that are outside YA too.
2. Finished reading BUMPED
My YA Books Central review: http://yabookscentral.blogspot.com/2011/03/bumped.html
3. Right now reading this:
This has an interesting premise of a group that helps werewolves. The beginning was a tad bit slow but kind of picks up when main character realizes what he is.
4. Got these books in the mail this week:
Read the first book DECEPTION and liked it.
5.
The title alone is hilarious! Can't wait to read this!
**Guilty pleasure:
That will be next week! While I'm on the cruise I will 'try' to stay away from the Internet and just relax though husband is taking his iPad. I need a break if anything to get my writing juices back to flowing and not to feel so stressed over everything.

The Secret Journeys of Jack London tour
I'm really excited to be a part of this blog tour!
My review of THE SECRET JOURNEYS OF JACK LONDON TOUR:
http://www.yabookscentral.com/cfusion/index.cfm?fuseAction=books.review&review_id=22680
Authors Christopher Golden and Tim Lebbon were kind enough to answer some questions about his book:
1. Very interesting fact that Jack London's mother actually was a medium. Were there any other interesting, unknown facts you learned in your research?
TL: Yes, discovering that was a surprise, and also a gift for us as writers, of course. The fact that she also offered Jack up to the spirits as a punishment, though obviously horrible for the young Jack London, was also priceless for what we wanted to do with the book. His mother was quite a tragic character -- she tried to kill herself when Jack was very young, spent the rest of her life with a gunshot scar on her forehead. Some of this we used in the book, and some we didn't.
The whole research process was a voyage of discovery. I knew a little about Jack, but not nearly as much as I thought. For instance, before the age of sixteen he'd been a hobo, an oyster pirate, and had sailed the Pacific hunting seals. Just amazing. He led such a full, exciting, tragic life ... much of what he did at an early age he was driven to by money worries, not only for himself but for his depressed mother. Tragic, but it shaped the way Jack London viewed life, and of course all that experience went into the incredible books and stories he wrote. Without all those terrible hardships, he would not have given us the wonderful books that still resonate so profoundly today.
CG: I'd echo the things that Tim said. I had read a bio of Jack when I was a teenager, so I knew some of the more exotic facts about his background, but I learned more--for better and for worse--about his thoughts and writings and politics while doing research for this book. As an adult, Jack adopted some attitudes--not uncommon for the era--that weren't so admirable, but as a young man he had a strong work ethic and used his voice to support the rights of laborers. And the more I read about his adventurous spirit...that's really the part of Jack London I most admire.
2. Love the legends you used in the story. Which one was your favorite?
TL: Definitely the Wedigo. Leshii is a Russian legend which we relocated a little .... just across the Bering Sea to Alaska. But the Wendigo has been a favourite of mine for years, ever since I read the classic Algernon Blackwood story The Wendigo. It's such a nasty tale, and at its heart it has a monster that is brutal and horrible, but pathetic too.
CG: The Wendigo was my favorite as well. We were very inventive with Leshii and his daughter, exploring the whole forest spirit angle and adapting it to the reality of the era...a kind of "what if." But with the Wendigo, we tried to stay true to the essence of the legends, and as such, the monster comes off as more of a force of nature than in any of the other iterations of the legend I've ever seen. I'm really pleased with what we were able to do with that.
3. What was the hardest scene to write?
TL: Without wanting to give too much away, there's a night-time attack on a camp, where we had to balance sensory input with mystery, darkness, ambiguity. I think it came out really well, and is a very scary scene. Can't wait to see it in the movie!
CG: For me, the most difficult parts of the story to write were the ones most rooted in fact. The trek up the Chilkoot Trail and the trip down Thirty Mile River and the White Horse Rapids...all of that stuff required a special kind of focus. We wanted the reader to FEEL what it might have been like for Jack and the thousands of other people who dared to make the trek through the Alaskan and Canadian wilderness, dreaming of gold.
4. What was your favorite scene in the book?
TL: I loved the Chilkoot Trail. It really was as challenging and deadly as we portray it in the book ... in fact, maybe even more so. The things people go through for gold...
CG: Ah, I can't give it away. Let's just say, the moment when Jack meets Lesya's father...it's just freaky. I loved that bit.
5. Do you have any sequels planned?
TL: Absolutely! The second book, THE SEA WOLVES, is out next year. We've just seen the cover and––if this is possible––I think it's even better than THE WILD. And we're just about to start work on book 3, WHITE FANGS.
I really loved this retelling of the classic Jack London story. Also the illustrations by Greg Ruth are great too:

The Secret Journeys of Jack London
I'm really excited to be a part of this!
Are you ready to take a journey into the wild?
Bestselling authors Christopher Golden and Tim Lebbon have teamed up to create THE SECRET JOURNEYS OF JACK LONDON. Jack certainly lived a wild life, which inspired Golden & Lebbon to create this new book series based on his real-life travels. They've taken his true stories and his fiction and mixed in urban legends and myths of the time. While THE SECRET JOURNEYS series is fiction, not biography, the books are extremely well-researched, and spooky elements add another level of intrigue to the richly detailed stories. 20th Century Fox has acquired the film rights to the series.
The first book, THE WILD, will be released on Tuesday, March 1st. When seventeen-year-old Jack London travels to Alaska to join the Klondike Gold Rush, the path he treads is not at all what he expected. Along the way, he encounters kidnappers, traders, traitors, and a mysterious wolf. Jack must face the wild head-on in order to survive.
The buzz for THE SECRET JOURNEYS OF JACK LONDON just keeps getting louder. 20th Century Fox has acquired the film rights to the series. Garth Nix, author of the Abhorsen Trilogy, declared: "A masterful mix of gold, cold, supernatural creatures, and dread magic makes this a great action adventure story." Mike Mignola, creator of Hellboy, calls THE WILD: "A great old-school adventure novel and the best use of the Wendigo legend I've ever read."
Authors Christopher Golden and Tim Lebbon will launch a blog tour the day before the book's release, beginning at Bildungsroman http://slayground.livejournal.com on Monday, February 28th and traveling through the blogs of YA/kidlit bloggers who are also teachers, librarians, and/or adventurers through Tuesday, March 8th. Each tour stop will offer an exclusive piece of art from Greg Ruth, whose stunning illustrations give life to the characters, locations, and beasts throughout the book.

Oscars
Last night I watched the last hour or so of the Oscars. Here's my take:
Natalie Portman was very pregnant and gorgeous! She glowed!
I loved seeing actresses who didn't look like they went on a starvation diet like:
Helen Bonham Carter
Yes, she's different but I think that's part of her charm.
Annette Bening:
Looked classic and so elegant.
Anne Hathaway:
I enjoyed her as a host. Yes, she was hyper at times but she did bring some charm to this years Oscars. Too bad her host didn't take a lesson from her and loosen up a bit.
Sorry, but I'm not getting the whole Gwen Paltrow singing thing. Yes, she played the part of a Country Western singer in a movie but come on.
And finally, loved the ending performance from the Staten Island kids:

Yesterday LK Madigan died. I didn't know Lisa but heard from those who did how much she rocked. I still remember her agent Jen Laughran talking about how excited she was to sign Lisa on as her first client. Others shared memories they had of Lisa too. She was mega talented, funny, and supportive to other YA authors. I love Jackson Pearce's vlogs and this one reflects on Lisa and those stories that left with her.
Lisa's loss has made the world a little grayer. Jackson says it best in her vlog:

1. Need to get a bathingsuit. Big time. Decided to check out Torrid for suits that aren't skimpy and only made for size 0. One thing I'm starting to embrace is my Latina curves. If I'm not skinny, well, that's ok.
2. Really want this book:
They should have it at my local Barnes and Noble.
3. Got these books in the mail:

5.Just got this book from Scholastic Tab book order:
The teaser to the sequel to CROSSED OUT--CROSS FIRE was up yesterday:
