My Five Favorite Romance Tropes

Romance stories have been a staple of literature since the beginning of time. Whether it’s a classic novel like Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen or a modern-day blockbuster like The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks, romance is always at the heart of the story. But what makes these stories so captivating? We can thank—or blame—romance tropes for that! Here are five of my personal favorite romance tropes as an author, in no particular order.
[image error] [image error]
Trope #1: Enemies to LoversEnemies to Lovers is a classic trope that has been around for centuries, and it shows no sign of going away anytime soon. This trope typically involves two characters who are initially at odds with each other but, through various circumstances, find themselves thrown together and eventually fall in love. It’s the perfect way to add a bit of drama and comedy to any situation.
Often times these two enemies-turned-lovers will have wildly different personalities and backgrounds, which makes things even more complicated! One might be from a wealthy family while the other lives on the streets, or they could come from opposite ends of a political situation, like in my Qurilixen Lords: Fire Prince, where the shifter prince finds himself at odds with a revolutionary leader trying to do right by her people.
Whatever their differences may be, it creates an interesting dynamic between them that can’t help but lead to some hilarious moments as they gradually let their guard down and realize how much they have in common.

The concept of ‘forbidden love’ is a trope as old as time. Whether it’s Romeo and Juliet, Edward and Bella, or two people from feuding families–we absolutely love rooting for the star-crossed lovers! There’s something undeniably exciting about the idea of two people taking a chance to be together despite any obstacles that stand in their way. Even if they don’t get their happily ever after, we can’t help but admire their courage to go against the grain.
I love Forbidden Love stories. The Lords of the Var series features a family of shifter princes who is literally taught not to fall in love with one woman, so every romantic love is a forbidden love.

When it comes to the classic “Grumpy vs Sunshine” trope, no one is sure who to root for. On one hand, you have Grumpy, the more serious of the two. Grumpy can be a pessimist, or serious, or burdened with some kind of heavy emotional worry that doesn’t make them the life of the party. But on the other hand, you have Sunshine, who always has something good to say and wants to spread joy and positivity wherever they go. It’s a battle between light and darkness!
The two characters never quite seem able to come together in harmony; instead they clash in an epic battle of wits. Will Grumpy be able to break through Sunshine’s cheerful exterior? Or will Sunshine be able to bring some levity into Grumpy’s dark world? No matter what happens in this age-old debate, it’s sure to be entertaining for readers everywhere!
I have the Grumpy vs Sunshine elements in many of my books. In A Dash of Destiny (Warlocks MacGregor Book 8), Rory is the more playful personality with little care in the world, while Jennifer is just trying to get her life on track and make ends meet.

The Fake Relationship trope is centered around two characters who enter into a false relationship with each other – usually for some kind of gain or benefit. Whether it’s to make an ex jealous or get someone off their back about being single, these fake partnerships can lead to some hilariously awkward yet often ultimately sweet moments between the two main characters. It’s perfect for any storyteller looking for an entertaining setup with plenty of potentials!
In my award-winning Historical Romance novel, Maiden and the Monster, we have a nobleman who takes in his enemy’s adult daughter when he finds her left for dead. In this Beauty and the Beast-esque story, they get together for all the wrong reasons–revenge and desperation. This is one of the books where I start getting worried reader emails before the end of the book, all generally at the same location.

Ah, Trope 5: Second Chance Romance. It’s the classic love story that keeps us reading time and time again. There are two versions of this trope. First, two lovers who were separated in some way find their way back to each other in the end. Whether it’s a reunion between old flames or a reconciliation between estranged family members, there’s something so heartwarming about seeing two people reunite against all odds.
The second version of this trope is when a character gets a second chance in life to do things right, as featured in my book Order of Magic: Second Chance Magic. Lorna, after being betrayed by her deceased husband, gets a second chance at love and life in this paranormal women’s fiction romance.

If you’re a fan of romance novels, chances are you’ve got your favorite trope. Whether it’s the classic billionaire bad boy and the small-town girl he sweeps off her feet, or the two people who can’t deny their chemistry even though they come from different worlds, each trope has its own unique appeal.
For those who love a bit of nostalgia with their happily ever afters, perhaps it’s the slow burn friends-to-lovers story that lights your fire? Or maybe it’s the whole opposites attract angle that keeps you turning pages? Whatever floats your boat – there’s sure to be something for everyone!
But if all else fails and you can’t decide which one is your favorite…there’s always the one where an alien prince falls in love with a human and whisks them away to another world. (See Captured by a Dragon-Shifter series) That one never gets old!

History of the Warlocks
The history of warlocks is one that is rooted in Scottish folklore and the study of magic. Warlocks are practitioners of magic, often seen as having a connection to supernatural forces and the ability to manipulate them. Warlocks have been a part of Scottish culture for centuries, with accounts of them dating back to medieval times. In Scotland and other parts of Europe, people believed that warlocks could bring both good and bad luck.
If you’re a fan of the Warlocks MacGregor series (or soon-to-be 😉 ) you know that the guys are all about family and protecting their magical secrets… in a hilariously, sometimes misguided, way. But have you ever wondered about where warlocks originated?

The concept of a warlock has been around for centuries, and their history is filled with mystery and intrigue. A warlock is a practitioner of the magical arts, believed to have supernatural or magical powers. Warlocks are most commonly associated with witchcraft or the occult, but they have also been known to be powerful healers and protectors in certain cultures.
In ancient times, warlocks were seen as wise men who could use their knowledge of the natural world to provide advice to members of their communities. They were also believed to possess special abilities that allowed them to predict the future or interact with spirits and deities. Throughout history, witches and warlocks were often feared for their perceived power over others, leading some societies to treat them harshly or even banish them from villages due to superstition.
Origins: Europe
The history of warlocks dates back centuries – long before the Middle Ages. Warlocks have their origins in Europe where they were believed to be practitioners of sorcery and/or magic with supernatural powers. During this time, they were often feared and accused of witchcraft which was forbidden by the Church. In medieval times, warlocks were usually male and believed to possess magical abilities that could be used for both good or evil purposes. They could use their powers to create spells or cast curses on enemies, summoning supernatural spirits and creatures to do their bidding. Warlocks also studied astrology and had an understanding of herbal medicine which enabled them to cure illness and injury as well as give advice in matters such as love, wealth and health.
The Warlocks MacGregor clan includes males and females of magick. The MacGregors do not agree with how history has labeled them, or other supernaturals. To them, warlock means magick, family, and immortality.

Magic & Beliefs: Practices & Rituals
The history of warlocks is a long and complex one, with its origins stretching back to ancient Europe. It is believed that the concept of warlock originated in the mythology and folklore of Northern Europe, particularly in Celtic cultures. In these tales, a warlock was often portrayed as a sorcerer or wizard who utilized supernatural powers for malicious purposes.
In later centuries, the term began to take on new meanings when it was adopted by Western Christianity as an insult against anyone they deemed heretical or blasphemous. This usage eventually led to the development of a negative stereotype associated with witches, sorcerers and other practitioners of occult arts in Europe and America alike.
Today, the word “warlock” has become synonymous with male magic users such as wizards and witches, but its association with evil remains strong among some circles.
The Warlocks MacGregor series is not a portrayal of modern-day witchcraft or those who hold such beliefs. The MacGregors are a magickal class all their own.
Witchcraft Trials: Persecution & Accusations
Throughout history, warlocks have been demonized and persecuted for their alleged practice of witchcraft. During the Witchcraft Trials of the early modern period, accusations and persecution were rampant, leading to a number of executions across Europe and Colonial America. The term “warlock” originated in Scotland during the 16th century when it was used as an othered term for male witches. This era also saw an increase in witch-hunting as authorities sought to root out those they deemed dangerous or heretical. As a result, many individuals were falsely accused and executed for being a warlock or practicing witchcraft.
In 1604 James I issued a royal decree that made participation in witchcraft punishable by death—a law that was enforced throughout Scotland and England until 1735 with over 300 recorded deaths due to execution under this law alone.
Modern Representations: Warlock Movies & Warlock Books
The term “warlock” likely conjures up images of power-hungry, malevolent sorcerers in the minds of many. But the history of warlocks is much more complex than modern representations might suggest. Warlocks have long been a part of folklore around the world, appearing in tales and myths stretching back centuries ago.
Today, warlocks are depicted in a variety of ways across movies and books. They often take on an adversarial role as powerful magical beings who use their craft to summon dark forces, gain forbidden knowledge or manipulate those around them for their own gain. Some works depict them as heroic figures, using their magic for good or simply trying to get by in a hostile world that looks upon them with fear and suspicion.
In my series, I wanted to bring the history of what humans thought of the Warlocks MacGregor clan and mingle it with the comedic prankster family that they are. They’ve lived through persecution and historical events, which have made them protective, but that doesn’t mean they don’t know how to have a good time.
Folklore Traditions: Legends & Myths
Warlocks have a long and mysterious history, shrouded in myth, legend, and superstition. What exactly is a warlock? To many cultures throughout history, the term has described an individual with magical powers or supernatural abilities.
In ancient mythology, warlocks were often portrayed as dark figures who practiced sorcery or witchcraft. They were believed to be able to summon demons and other evil spirits to do their bidding. Legends described warlocks as having special knowledge of the occult and supernatural forces that allow them to shape reality in some way. This could include things like casting spells or curses on their enemies or manipulating fate itself. In some places they were even worshipped as gods!
Throughout the centuries, there have been countless tales of powerful warlocks performing incredible acts of magic- from controlling storms to turning themselves into animals.
Today people know magic is fake–card tricks and illusions, magicians and entertainers. But there is an older magick, a powerful force hidden from modern eyes, buried in folklore and myths, remembered by the few who practice the old ways and respect the lessons of past generations. This is where you find the Warlocks MacGregor family, hidden amongst us in plain sight. If you can count a bunch of hunky Scots in kilts running around modern-day small town Wisconsin as incognito.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the history of warlocks is an interesting one, full of myth and lore. It is clear that warlocks have been around for centuries, and their presence has been felt throughout the ages. Their stories are often mysterious and sometimes dark, but they remind us of the power of the supernatural and our ability to believe in it. Warlocks have become a part of our culture, whether we realize it or not, and exploring their stories can help us gain a better understanding of history and ourselves.
I hope you enjoyed learning a little bit more about the history behind the Warlocks MacGregor series world. I have really enjoyed writing about this family and their antics.

What is it About Dragon Shifter Romance Books that Keep Us Coming Back?

Are you a fan of paranormal romance books? If so, you are likely already familiar with the dragon shifter romance books. These stories have captivated readers for decades with their tales of alpha male dragon shifters and their fated mates.
I’ve been writing and publishing dragon shifter romance books since early 2004. My Dragon Lords series will be turning twenty soon. The first book, Barbarian Prince, first published in May 2004, was so wildly successful and such a reader favorite that it has spawned an additional thirty-eight books with even more to come.
But what is it about these stories that keep readers coming back for more? Here is a deeper dive into why readers can’t seem to get enough of alpha male dragon shifter romances.
Alpha Male Heroes and Fated MatesThe stoic male hero with a lot of strength and confidence is a popular trope in fiction. It’s the classic trope where the hero saves the “damsel in distress.” This is especially true of stories about dragon shifters, where the hero is typically an alpha male who has learned to control his inner beast in order to save his people and win the affection of his true love–the woman destined for him–his fated mate. It’s thrilling and romantic all at once! A fun twist on this is a heroine who doesn’t always need the hero to save her, but that doesn’t stop him from trying.
In the Barbarian Prince, Ualan is determined to follow dragon shifter tradition and take a bride at the marriage festival, but his plans are thrown into chaos when he meets Morrigan. She’s gorgeous and independent, but after agreeing to marry him, she refuses to accept their shared fate. Morrigan, a reporter, is at the ceremony to get a story. Unfortunately, little is known about the event, and her sources didn’t give her the whole picture. What ensues is a tale of two stubborn and passionate characters as they defy conventions and resist their destiny.
I’m not going to lie. I love fated mate stories.
Dragon Eggs, Dragon Stones, and Dragon EyesAnother draw for many readers is the elements of transformation found in these books. From mysterious dragon eggs that can only be hatched by the most powerful of magic, or mystical dragon stones that hold the key to prophecies to smoking hot dragon shifters whose eyes are smoldering, there is something undeniably magical about these stories that keep us enthralled until we turn the last page.
In Dragon Lords, the men have crystals that help them divine their futures, and they have learned never to question them… which can lead to some issues for the brides.
Tales from Long AgoFinally, there is something nostalgic about reading stories about ancient dragons and their human lovers, who battled powerful forces to be together. It reminds us of classic fairy tales from long ago, with brave heroes and beautiful maidens battling evil forces to emerge triumphant in their quest for true love. These stories give us hope for our own happily-ever-afters!
It’s no wonder that readers can’t seem to get enough of paranormal romance books featuring strong alpha males as dragon shifters. From heroic tales of true love conquering all, to magical elements like mysterious eggs and smoldering dragons’ eyes, this genre never fails to captivate our imaginations time and time again! Whether you’re looking for lighthearted escapism or a thrilling adventure filled with suspenseful drama, dragon shifter books offer it all! So why not get started with the Dragon Lords books today?
These Dragon Lords alpha males have no problem with commitment, and very little hesitation when it comes to making a decision, even one as important as marriage. With very few words spoken and a fast courtship, they will bond with their fated mates. We human women tend to need more time making decisions.

The dragon-shifting alien princes have no problem with commitment. In one night, these alpha males will meet and choose their fated mates in a simplistic ceremony involving the removal of masks and the crushing of crystals. With few words spoken and the shortest, most bizarre courtship in history, they will bond to their women forever.

Have you ever been in a bookshop, looking for something new to read and thinking: “I wish there were more books about older women who kick ass?” Well, good news. There are! Paranormal Women’s Fiction (PWF) is the celebration of books with older heroines. These stories focus on older women with real-life issues (and magical ones because supernatural stories rock).
Paranormal women’s fiction has taken the world by storm, and I love it!Older women kick ass. They know things. They’ve been there. They are worthy of their own literature category. They also have their own set of issues that they face–empty nests, widows, divorce, menopause, etc.–and these issues deserve to be addressed and embraced in fiction.
Growing older is a real part of life. Women’s friendships matter. Women matter. Our thoughts and feelings matter.
Below I’ll give you a list of where to start your PWF journey.

Michelle M. Pillow, Mandy M. Roth, Shannon Mayer, K.F. Breene, Jana DeLeon, Eve Langlais, Deanna Chase,
Elizabeth Hunter, Darynda Jones, Kristen Painter, Robyn Peterman, Christine Gael, Denise Grover Swank

Click here for more book information! Paranormal Women’s Fiction is a celebration of books with older heroines.Paranormal Women’s Fiction is a celebration of books with older heroines. It’s also being called Gen X fiction. In the PWF genre, you’ll find a wide range of genres, including urban fantasy and paranormal romance.
If you love reading about kickass females who aren’t afraid to jump into action (hello Generation X, I’m looking at you!), then this is the genre for you! It’s a great place to look if you’re looking for strong female characters who get things done without being damsels in distress or relying on men to help them out.
Older women kick ass. They know things. They’ve been there and done that ten times over.
Growing older is a natural part of life. Older women are more than just mothers, they are not just caretakers, and they’re definitely not just housewives. They have their own set of issues that they face–empty nests, widows, divorce, menopause–and these issues deserve to be addressed and embraced in literature.
It may be tempting to think of these stories as being just about older women, but they’re not: these books are about the age-old issues of loss, love, and friendship—the kinds of things everyone can relate to regardless of gender or background.
A life without paranormal women’s fiction is a life not worth living. You might be wondering, “What exactly is paranormal women’s fiction?”
It’s a celebration of books with older heroines. These stories focus on older women with real-life issues (and magical ones, cause paranormal is just cool). They follow the heroine as she navigates life in a world where magic is possible, and things aren’t always as they seem.
Who are the Fab 13 of Paranormal Women’s Fiction?I had the pleasure of working with these authors on a FAB13 project that helped launch the genre name, Paranormal Women’s Fiction, at vendors. You can see my book in that project at the top of this post, but here are the other twelve authors.
We didn’t invent books with older heroines, but the goal was to showcase them in their own category on vendors. Thus “Paranormal Women’s Fiction” category was born. Now you can see it everywhere, and we love how many authors have started (and continue) to write in this genre!

5 CUPS! “Michelle Pillow shows us the scope of just how far a faction is willing to go to control the out come of a situation. This story is one of misery, death, tragedy and hope. The tale she paints takes you to some very dark places, and then pushes you back up into hope, love and light. Frost Maiden is wonderfully well written, and the story pulls at your heart strings in every way imaginable. I can not wait to read more stories by this author, and hope that her next installment of Space Lords is not to far off.” Lee Ann, Coffeetime Romances
