FAQ: Why aren’t your books free or all super cheap?
A lot of work goes into each of my books, and expenses. I am mostly self-published indie these days which means I have to hire out for quality help. I refuse to write a book and throw it out the same day like some authors do. That cheats readers of quality work.
This includes hiring cover artists, editors, proofers, paying for advertising, formats, distribution. All of these things cost money. My books go through several rounds of edits to ensure I’m putting out the best product possible. This also means that I have to charge for that product.
Writing is my only job. It’s how I support myself and my family. Its a job I LOVE and I have no complaints about it. But I also can’t afford to just hand everything away for free. As much as I wish they would, bill don’t go away.
Author Mandy M. Roth explains this so eloquently in her blog post here, that all I can really say is DITTO.

Chloe Cole, Author Interview
Chloe Cole, Author Spotlight
By Michelle Pillow, www.michellepillow.com
Chloe Cole is just getting started in the paranormal realm, but you might know her as the USA Today bestsellers under the contemporary romance pen name, Christine Bell. When she’s not writing as one of her personalities, Chloe is an avid poker player, and the reigning Foxwoods Casino Ladies Hold’em World Poker champion. Her newest paranormal release, Prey, is in ebooks at all major online vendors.
Q: In your book, Prey, you explore the dynamic between warring packs of wolf-shifters. What inspired you to write about this?
Chloe: I’ve always loved shifters, because it reinforces the concept that, at the core, we’re still animals. We behave in ways that are instinctive, territorial, and driven by our most basic of needs at times. It’s a great jump-off point for volatile interactions across the board. My shifters fight hard and love hard and play hard.
Q: Do you have any paranormal theories?
Chloe: So many, it’s scary! But here’s one: I’m a witch, and so are you. I firmly believe that we have way more control over the universe than we give ourselves credit for. The mind is an immeasurably powerful force. I find most of the things that have happened in my life are due to my unwavering belief that they would. Good and bad. When I’m doubtful, or afraid, or in a negative mindset, the things I think I want never come to pass. When I focus, and believe, the results are nothing short of miraculous.
I tell a story about getting “the call” from my first publisher, Carina Press, back in 2010 for a steampunk novella I wrote called The Twisted Tale of Stormy Gale. I woke up that morning, and called in to my day job asking for a personal day, because I was convinced that Angela James was going to call me and tell me they wanted my book. I had NO way of knowing it would happen. It had been on submission for two months, and I never got that feeling before. That day, I just knew. And, at about two o’clock that afternoon, I had my cell phone in my hand when it rang. I answered the phone, trembling from head to toe, and Angie said “Can I speak to Christine Bell please, this is Angela James from Carina Press.” And I said (and I wish this part was a lie, lol) “Shut up.” I was in total shock. When we later became friends, I made her a foil hat so she wouldn’t be a victim of my mind control powers every time I saw her, lol. It sounds silly, and I definitely have fun with that aspect of it, but I truly do believe we can will things into being.
Q: Do you have any paranormal pet projects?
Chloe: I don’t personally, but my sister is a practicing psychic and she is AMAZING. She blows my mind pretty much every day. Sometimes in good ways (ala “Great offer coming soon!”) sometimes in bad (“Hey, are you traveling anywhere this weekend? Cuz…don’t.”) She has predicted pretty much my entire adult life in advance.
Here is her website: http://sacredmysteryarts.com/
And here is a link to her free tarot card app: http://www.indie-goes.com/fairy-tales...
Q: What are your favorite paranormal shows, movies and books?
Chloe: Supernatural, Witches of East End (okay, sue me >.< I KNOW it’s silly but I still love it, lol), and Originals, and American Horror Story on TV, and then for books, I’m a big fan of J.R. Ward as well as fantasy/PNR crossover YA like Harry Potter. My favorite movie with paranormal elements is Stardust based on the Neil Gaiman book about witches.
Q: Do you believe in the supernatural? Or are you a skeptic?
Chloe: I, I am the opposite of a skeptic, lol! I think, as big as our world is, as big as the universe is, the idea that the only things that exist are the things we can see or explain seems naïve to me.
Q: What kind of paranormal creatures do you wish you could meet?
Chloe: Oooohhh, sooo many. I don’t even know how to pick. I guess a Pegasus. Because flying. And fairies. They make me feel like a kid again, just full of wonder.
Q: Have you ever been to a psychic and/or a past life regression?
Chloe: Many times. I’ve been to good ones, and bad ones. But it was my sister who told me I would make a living writing one day. I was working as a secretary, and hadn’t written a word since college fifteen years before, so I thought she had lost her mind. Two years later, I sold my first book. And two years ago, I quit my day job to write full-time, and haven’t looked back. It’s been a dream come true.
Q: Have you ever been abducted by aliens?
Chloe: You know, I wonder… See, I have the irrational fear of orafi-doctors (i.e. any doctor who has to violate you in some way internally to do his/her job. So, like dentists, gynos, proctologists). I have a very high tolerance for pain, so that’s not the issue. But my whole body RAILS against the intrusion when I have to go to exams like that. I’m filled with dread for a week before, and emotionally drained for days afterward. Back to your question, I do sometimes wonder if maybe I was taken by some curious alien race and probed or something, and my subconscious has blocked it out because my mind couldn’t handle the knowledge or something, lol.
Q: If you could time slip to any year, when would you go?
Chloe: Wow…I think back to the age of dinosaurs. I wouldn’t stay long, but I’m just so fascinated by them.
Q: Would you jump into a fairy ring?
Chloe: Without question.
Q: How feasible is a zombie apocalypse?
Chloe: Feasible enough that my hubs, sons and I all know how to shoot a bow and arrow, just in case :op
We also have a plan for long term survival that involves our local Wal-Mart. Hey, you never know.
Q: Choose your fate: Would you rather face being abducted by menacing aliens or the face imminent threat of zombies?
Chloe: Zombies. Zombies might eat you, but aliens keep you.
Q: If you could be anywhere while writing, where would you be and why?
Chloe: Hawaii. I just love it there so much. I’m obsessed with the ocean and living on the coast. I hate feeling land-locked.
Q: If you could channel into another author’s mind to find out how they wrote a particular book, who would it be?
Chloe: J.K. Rowling. The world building is just so magical. I visited the Harry Potter theme park in Orlando and I literally teared up when I walked in. The movie theme song was playing in the background and the conductor was there to welcome us. I could see Hogwarts in distance, and I literally got all choked up. I felt such a connection with her world. She’s amazing.

Become Spellbound by the MacGregors – TODAY
Now available!
Warlocks MacGregor: Spellbound by Michelle M. Pillow
JUST RELEASED
Paperback: 320 pages
Let Sleeping Warlocks Lie…
Iain MacGregor knows how his warlock family feels about outsiders discovering the truth of their powers, its forbidden. That doesn’t seem to stop him from having accidental magickal discharges whenever he’s around the woman who has captured his attention. Apparently his magick and other “parts” don’t seem to care what the rules are, or that the object of his affection just might be his undoing.
Warning: Contains yummy, hot, mischievous MacGregor boys who may or may not be wearing clothing and who are almost certainly up to no good on their quest to find true love.
Let there be Cake! Excerpt
“You have the coolest power ever.” Jane’s excited voice filtered out of Malina’s bedroom.
Iain somehow knew he’d find her there. He’d felt her location the moment he’d entered his home.
“Oo, do this one,” Jane said.
Curious, Iain pushed his finger against the door and let it silently open. He found Jane and his sister sitting in the middle of her room surrounded by an ocean of half-eaten cupcakes and pastries. An open recipe book lay on the floor between them. Both women were biting into cream puffs that matched the picture on the page. Their eyes turned toward him at the exact same moment, and they stopped mid-bite as if they’d been caught doing something incredibly bad.
Jane’s hair was slicked into a pile on her head. A spot of brown hair color stained her forehead. She laughed as she bit down and chewed. She offered the rest of the cream puff to him. Iain stepped through the cupcake minefield, leaned over and took a bite without bothering to take it from her hand.
“Mm.” He nodded before swallowing. “It’s good.”
“This is amazing,” Jane said. “I show your sister a picture and she makes me food.”
“Should I be jealous? Ya didn’t get this excited by my powers,” Iain said.
“You didn’t tell me you could materialize cupcakes off a magazine picture,” Jane said.
“That’s because he can’t,” Malina informed. “Oh, and I didn’t tell you the best part. You get all the pleasure of eating but none of the weight. On the down side, none of the nutrition if you’re locked somewhere without actual food.”
Jane dipped her finger in frosting and licked it. “Tastes real.”
“She’s like a battery,” Malina said to Iain. She set her cream puff down by a red velvet cupcake and began flipping through the magazine. She touched Jane, then a picture of a banket. Almost instantly, the pastry materialized between them. “Oh, oh, oh, I just had a brilliant idea. With my power and your battery charge, we should find a giant billboard. I think I saw one to the south of town with—”
“Stutzman Bakery,” Jane finished for Malina. “The five-foot wedding cake!”
“All right, I’m cutting ya off,” Iain said. “No five-foot wedding cakes.”
“But…” Jane said, looking around the room. She pouted. “Giant billboard cake.”
“Ya cannot eat a five-foot cake,” Iain reasoned. “Not even if the rest of the MacGregor women helped ya.”
“We could too,” Malina said. “How hard could it be?” She counted on her fingers. “Me, Jane, ma, Cait, Lydia—”
Jane giggled. Her movements were a little jittery from the magickal sugar rush she had to be feeling. “This sounds like a challenge. I think we need to materialize the cake and prove Iain wrong.”
“We have ourselves a wager.” Malina jumped up. “I’ll tell the others. Lads versus lasses.”
Iain groaned.
Malina rushed out the door, only to come back and say to Jane, “You should wash that out now. Have Iain check the shampoo before ya use it to make sure Euann hasn’t tampered with the bottle.”
“Are you going to check my shampoo?” Jane grinned.
“Don’t ya want to know about Sean?” Iain asked.
Jane smiled wider. “Yes. Tell me about Sean.”
“Everything is handled.”
“That’s nice.” Jane leaned over and dipped he finger into chocolate frosting and then licked it.
“Here, look at me.” Iain lifted her chin and tipped back her head. Her eyes were glassy. “How much did ya eat?”
“I feel sparkly,” she said.
“I see that.” Iain chuckled and took advantage of the closeness of her mouth. He kissed her, enjoying the taste of frosting on her lips.
“You feel sparkly too,” she whispered.
“I think ya are drunk on magick,” Iain said.

Nancy Holzner, Author Interview
Nancy Holzner, Author Spotlight
By Michelle Pillow, www.michellepillow.com
By day, Nancy Holzner is a technical writer. By night, she conjures demons—and shapeshifters and vampires and werewolves and zombi es. Nancy is the author of the Deadtown urban fantasy series, published by Ace. If you’ve ever been stuck in Boston traffic and wished for a zombie apocalypse just to end the misery, you’ll enjoy Deadtown’s world. Nancy lives in central New York state, where she enjoys hiking, visiting wineries, and listening obsessively to opera.
Her newest title, Hellhound, is available now in ebook and mass market paperback at all major bookstores.
Q: In your Deadtown series, Vicky is a shapeshifter based on Welsh mythology. What inspired you to create such a character?
Holzner: Before I became a writer, I was an English professor. My specialty was medieval literature, and one of the most popular classes I taught was Arthurian lit—the legends of King Arthur. I became very interested in the stories and even mores in their historical and cultural contexts, the societies out of which they grew. I used to teach parts of The Mabinogi, a collection of Old Welsh myths and legends, and one of my favorite stories was the tale of Ceridwen and Gwion Bach. The story involves a shapeshifting contest similar to the one between Madam Mim and Merlin in Disney’s Sword in the Stone. I thought it would be fun to write about a shapeshifter who wasn’t limited to a single form, like a werewolf. As I started to create Vicky’s world, I pulled in more elements from the Old Welsh stories, including Ceridwen’s good and evil sons, Myrddin Wyllt (Merlin the Wild), the Lady of the Lake, Arawn (ruler of the Welsh realm of the dead), and more. The legends are so rich that it’s great to mine them for themes and images.
Q: Why do you think people are fascinated by the paranormal?
Holzner: I think many people have a sense that there’s a lot more to this world than meets the eye. The paranormal offers an alternative to everyday reality. It’s a way of exploring other possibilities. The paranormal also offers wonderful metaphors for people’s desires and fears. Werewolves represent both the freedom and the fear of people’s animal natures. Vampires represent a desire for embodied eternal life, while zombies represent a fear of the same thing. Frankenstein, in some ways the first zombie novel, explores the limits of knowledge and the consequences of overreaching. As long as there are things we don’t know, I think people will always be interested in the paranormal.
Q: What are your favorite paranormal shows, movies and books?
Holzner: Lately I’ve been very interested in the work of neuroscientists who are researching consciousness. Is consciousness a special kind of energy? Does it precede and succeed our physical bodies? Or is consciousness merely a function of the physical brain, produced by the body and ending with its death? I’m fascinated by research scientists who are taking such questions seriously. A couple of really good books dealing with these issues are Brain Wars by Mario Beauregard and Consciousness Beyond Life: The Science of the Near-Death Experience by Pim van Lommel.
Q: Do you believe in the supernatural?
Holzner: I guess I’d call myself a hopeful skeptic. I’m open to the idea that there are realities beyond what our senses (and our systems for making sense of the world) can perceive. At this point, though, I don’t know how we’ll ever become fully aware of them if they are beyond our capabilities for perception. On the other hand, things that used to seem impossible or magical, such as the ability to fly, have been figured out and are now commonplace. Similarly, we no longer believe that thunderstorms are caused by angry gods. I’m hopeful that what currently seems supernatural, such as ghosts or astral travel or even time travel, may one day be understood and considered as natural as a thunderstorm.
Q: Have you ever had a paranormal experience?
Holzner: I’ve had a couple related to my late husband. (I’m sorry if this sounds depressing to start with—it gets better!) In 2013 I was at my husband’s bedside as he was dying. He wasn’t conscious, but I was talking to him anyway. I asked him to give me a sign after his death if he could. But, I said, it had to be both specific and unmistakable. It sounds rather demanding to put conditions on a request to a dying man, but I needed to know. I didn’t want to look up at a vaguely heart-shaped cloud and think, “That’s from Steve!” Grief is hard enough; I didn’t want to be foolish, as well.
For the first couple of weeks after his death, I’d see something and wonder, “Is that my sign? Is that my sign?” Some things could have been considered specific, but nothing felt unmistakable. I started putting my life back together. One thing that troubled me was that I had lost a pearl ring that Steve had bought me in Hawaii during our last vacation together. I tore apart the house, looked through every pocket in every piece of clothing, but I couldn’t find the ring anywhere. When I’d finally run out of places to look, I said out loud in the empty house, “Okay, if you’re going to give me a sign, find my ring.” Then I went about my day.
The next morning, I went into Steve’s office (we both worked at home). He was a big diet soda drinker, and he had quite a few two-liter bottles lined up along one wall. I don’t drink soda, so I’d been gradually emptying the bottles and recycling them. On that morning, I nearly tripped over a soda bottle and wondered how it had gotten so far out into the room. In fact, three bottles had moved, lying on their sides and forming a triangle. My house was built in 1880, so I figured the bottles had rolled on the sloping floor. I thought I should probably empty a few more bottles. I bent over to pick one up and, there in the center of the triangle, specific and unmistakable, was my pearl ring! I have no explanation for how it got there. I believe it was my sign.
There have been a couple of other signs since then. I find that since I quit wondering whether it could be possible and just accepted that he’s still hanging around, I’ve relaxed and enjoyed his company a whole lot more.
Q: What kind of paranormal creatures do you wish you could meet?
Holzner: I’d really love to meet and communicate with a ghost. I have so many questions about what happens after the death of the body. I would really like to know whether consciousness (or spirit or soul or whatever one calls it) continues, whether we meet lost loved ones again, whether there are dimensions we can experience beyond the physical plane. A ghost would have some answers for me!
Q: Choose your fate: Would you rather face being abducted by menacing aliens or the face imminent threat of zombies?
Holzner: Either way, I’m probably a goner. I always say I’d be one of the first to go in a zombie apocalypse. Even so, I’ll take the zombies. If by some chance I managed to develop awesome fighting skills and escape, I’d prefer to be on my home planet. After an epic battle, I doubt I’d have enough energy left to learn how to pilot a spaceship.
Q: Choose your fate: Who would you rather face off with: a vampire, a werewolf, or an evil wizard?
Holzner: That’s a tough one! Not the wizard, because I don’t know enough about magic and countering spells. And you have to get awfully close to a vampire to drive a stake through its heart. So that leaves the werewolf. A silver bullet will take care of that creature, so at least I’d have a chance with some distance between us. On the other hand, the only gun I have is a BB gun. Do they make silver BBs?
Q: If you could be anywhere while writing, where would you be and why?
Holzner: It’s long been a dream of mine to rent a cottage on the Welsh coast and write there. My fantasy cottage is high up on a cliff, with a wonderful view of the ocean from my writing desk, and a path down to the beach. Include a pub within a couple miles’ walk, and I’d be the happiest writer on the planet. Although possibly not the most productive.
Q: When writing a new paranormal world, what details do you think are most important?
Holzner: For me, characters always come first, before any other element such as plot or setting. But the development of each element affects the others. For example, I understand my characters by putting them in action. So on a new project, I write scenes that probably won’t appear in the book, because it’s helpful to throw the characters into a situation and see how they respond. The same for setting. I start with a character and then ask what kind of setting would provide the best context for this character to act? As the setting develops, it affects the character, introducing restrictions and opportunities that wouldn’t have occurred to me otherwise. Character, plot, and setting are all about context, and each continuously affects the others.
Thank you for joining us, Nancy!

About the Book
A little magickal mischief never hurt anyone…
Erik MacGregor, from a clan of ancient Scottish warlocks, isn’t looking for love. After centuries, it’s not even a consideration…until he moves in next door to Lydia Barratt. It’s clear that the shy beauty wants nothing to do with him, but he’s drawn to her nonetheless and determined to win her over.
Lydia Barratt just wants to be left alone to grow flowers and make lotions in her old Victorian house. The last thing she needs is a demanding Scottish man meddling in her private life. Just because he’s gorgeous and totally rocks a kilt doesn’t mean she’s going to fall for his seductive manner.
But Erik won’t give up and just as Lydia lets her guard down, his sister decides to get involved. Her little love potion prank goes terribly wrong, making Lydia the target of his sudden embarrassingly obsessive behavior. They’ll have to find a way to pull Erik out of the spell fast when it becomes clear that Lydia has more than a lovesick warlock to worry about. Evil lurks within the shadows, and it plans to use Lydia, alive or dead, to take out Erik and his clan for good.
