Native American Mound Builders and the Missing Graves

 Honoring Our Ancestors
Part 2
The Mound Builders
And The Missing Graves

Diana, my new-found cousin in New Zealand, had been instrumental in helping me on Ancestry .com. I found it extremely important to give back.  When I discovered that Diana’s direct ancestor, Elizabeth Whyte Duthie (1851-1885), who is also my link, the person responsible for my ancestors coming to America from Scotland, was buried in Forest Home Cemetery,  I had to check it out; especially considering it was only a half hour drive from my home. I decided to find Elizabeth’s grave to pay homage and take a picture to share  with Diana.

Much has been written about this cemetery that first started out as a Potawatomi Village and burial ground. This cemetery is also the site of an ancient Native American Burial Ground known as the Mound Builders. The mound builders lived over 1,000 years ago. A society that thrived for thousands of years. The strange thing about these mounds is that they are only visible from an aerial view. These effigies are shaped like lizards, serpents, alligators, etc… but they are so big that you can only see them from an airplane or helicopter. There are other earthen plateaus that look like pyramids and conical-shaped burial mounds across the country, but they are obvious to spot from the ground. Some have skeletons of humans that are considered giants standing over 8 feet tall.

Growing up in Chicago, I heard that there was a local cemetery that had an Ancient Native American Mound and that they didn’t want to publicize it, for fear of it being pilfered. I didn’t know until I started to drive around Forest Home Cemetery, that this was in fact the cemetery with the ancient mound!

In 2001, my family and I visited the Cahokia Mound in Southern Illinois where the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers meet. The ancient burial ground held a Chief with many maidens and thousands of sea shells, showing that this area was a great trade center, 1000 years ago. Sea shells must have been used as currency, considering that there is no ocean located in the midwest that would provide sea shells for the local natives. I was familiar with mound builders before visiting the cemetery. At least enough to recognize a mound when I saw one.

[image error]notice the hill arcing to the right in this picture, look beyond to see mausoleums jutting out of the hill. This is in fact a Native American mound that the cemetery owner sold as mausoleums over a hundred years ago.

I started at the main office of the cemetery where I paid $5.00 for each grave that they looked up. I learned, much to my dismay, that, because Elizabeth Whyte Duthie died in 1885, they no longer had any record of her. They did however have my grandmother’s brother’s grave from 1911, James Cottingham was in an unmarked grave. They gave me a map of the cemetery with the two neighboring marked graves so that I could  find it.

It is difficult to capture this mound without having an aerial view.  I had to drive around a bit to find my grand uncles grave. While investigating I found this site with its brick road, and circa 1900 mausoleums intriguing.

Forest Home is a beautiful, picturesque setting with the Des Plaines river running  through it. There is a very strong  presence about the place. It feels ethereal, spiritual, serene and peaceful. It was a very unique experience. The place definitely has a presence. And I enjoyed investigating the 220 acre area.

[image error]close up of front of mausoleum from the brick road side of the mound.
[image error]I didn’t measure the exact height of these mausoleums, but that is an average size 7 foot door, so I would guestimate that the mausoleum stands about 12 feet or more.

[image error]This is a close view of a monument place into the mound.

On the opposite side of the road, sadly, the historical sacred ground of this 1,000+ year old civilization has been pushed aside so that others may take their place. Now these mausoleums are reaching their expiration date as stated by Illinois law, I wonder how it will be handled?

[image error]The other side from the road. The mound was cut into on both sides to add these mausoleums.

[image error]from the top of the mound you can see the roofs of the mausoleums jutting out the side of this once sacred space that native Americans still visited all the way up to 1865.

It is safe to say that these mausoleums are over ten feet tall to give you an idea how high this mound is. I am afraid the original shape is now gone. Since there were no flying machines in the first decade of the 1900s, they probably didn’t know what they were digging into and the original shape is now gone.

[image error]this is a view inside one of the mausoleums. These mausoleums are  just over one hundred years old. I am not sure if they will be replaced or left as they are.

I wonder what the diggers discovered when they dug into this mound to install the mausoleums. Each mausoleum contains six to eight graves. These mausoleums are beyond the hundred year expiration date where they can be changed over.

[image error]I found the monument for the mound builders. The picture to the left is where the monument stands. I took the picture with great reverence as I stood on top of the mound. Off in the distance you can see a monument for the Native American Mound builders. I wonder, did they place it so far away to protect the mound or their reputation for disturbing the mound by installing mausoleums?

[image error]I took the picture to the left to give perspective of the size of the Native American Mound Builder Monument. This white monument in the right of the picture is where the cemetery decided to make a memorial for the ancient mound builders. As you can tell from the picture above it is a long ways off from the actual mound.

To view what this says I have included a website here so you can read it, if you are interested.

As I drove farther, I discovered that the civil war soldier’s graves where also gone and a plaque was now all that remained. In the photo to the left you can see a List of the Union Civil war soldiers that are buried at Forest Home Cemetery in Forest Park, Illinois. They no longer have head stones and I am unsure what they did with the original graves. I wonder if they leave the graves and just add around them or if they remove them? And if they remove them, where do they move them to?

I also discovered the historical Haymarket Affair victims and the perpetrators that were executed for the bombing, graves where also gone and in their place a plaque.  I have sat on this information for three years not knowing what to do with it. I am glad I now have a venue it which to release the information.

Unfortunately, through my genealogy journey I have discovered many ancestors with unmarked graves, my third great grand parents in Scotland, My second great-grandmother in Idaho, and these two, Elisabeth Whyte Duthie and James Cottingham.  I could never afford to purchase headstones for all the relatives in unmarked graves, it gives me small solace to know the general area where they are resting.

I do not know the solution to this problem of missing graves. I am sure that Europe and other countries much older than America have had to make due and come up with a solution for land use. In the meantime, it is important to remember those that came before us and made our lives possible. Honoring our ancestors by remembering them and thanking them for our lives is a good place to start.

I am thankful to Elizabeth Whyte Duthie for traveling to Chicago, so her half-sister, my great-grandmother Agnes could meet and marry Martin Cottingham.

Agnes and Martin were James Cottingham’s parents. James died of appendicitis at the age of 21 in 1911. He lived a short life and is now resting at Forest Home Cemetery, in Forest Park, Illinois.

What I find truly amazing is that I had never even heard the name, Elizabeth Whyte Duthie, before I started my search. I had a mixed up story of my great grand parents meeting and falling in love on the boat to America. Knowing more about how I came to be, gives me a greater understanding of who I am, and a greater appreciation for my ancestors. Knowing their struggles and sacrifices gives me a reason to be grateful to them all. Learning about my ancestors is how I came up with the outline of, Rituals Lost, due out in October of 2019.

There are also many famous graves, like Ernest Hemingway’s, parents and grand parents buried in this cemetery too. You can get a list of famous graves to visit at the front office or take a walking tour with the historical society.

For my locals interested in taking a historic tour through the cemetery; The Oak Park and River Forest Historical societies feature an annual event, the 3rd Saturday in October. This year it is being held on October 20th, click here for more info.

[image error]This 6 and a half-foot, inscribed headstone for my second great-grandmother, Margaret Cottingham circa 1895 still stands. My grandfather, William Cottingham  is also interred in this eight grave family plot located in Evanston, Illinois with a view of Lake Michigan.

Until next week, Part 3: October 15th, The mysteries of my Grandmother with the Glass eye and my 2nd great-grandfather, William Cottingham’s Last Will and Testament circa 1907, that just popped up on my computer screen…yet another name and person that I had never heard of until I started to investigate and learn about my ancestry in 2015.

Rituals Lost

[image error]There’s been a lot of buzz for the Fairy/Mermaid Jars that I have been posting on online; so, this post will be threefold.

First, I would like to thank everyone who purchased the, About Series, during the Super Summer Sale Spectacular. I can’t wait to see your reviews up on Amazon, Goodreads and Smashwords.

[image error]Second, I will explain how the Fairy/Mermaid Jars came into being, how to use them, how you can get one free and how they tie into the my work in progress (WIP) Rituals Lost.

And Lastly: Since, October is the month of Halloween (All saint’s eve)/Day of the Dead/Shamhain and all things spiritual, I will share my genealogy journey that prompted me to write my latest (WIP), Rituals Lost, in which the Fairy/Mermaid Jars hold a significant part in the storyline, in a four part series entitled: Honoring Our Ancestors.

A Bit Of Background: Not only have I read the Bible cover to cover, but during the last three years researching Rituals Lost, I have studied all things mystical spanning ancient text from, The Kabbalah, to self-proclaimed masters, like Gerald Gardener and Aleister Crowley to the Hermetic, Gnostic and secret societies of the past few centuries to learn what is missing in our common knowledge to create my new series. My reviews on Goodreads are a good indication of the text that I have covered during my research.

Now for the genealogy component: Are you interested in your genealogy or to learn who you are, and how you came into being?

Have you ever thought about all the people that came before you to bring you into existence?

October is a great month for honoring our ancestors by being grateful for the sacrifices they made to bring you into being.

[image error]It is amazing to think that any slight differential could change the whole picture and you might not have been here at all. It is also amazing to think about how your genes and family lineage have survived these 65 million years to bring you into being. With that said, I will give you a small snippets of my personal journey in a four-part series : Honoring Our Ancestors, each Monday in the month of October, that were the catalyst for me to write, Rituals Lost.

(A very brief history) Keep in mind there is too much to unpack in a simple blog. So I am just hitting the most relevent points: Judaism was the first monotheistic religion followed by Christianity who took Judaism’s Torah (Old Testament of the Bible) and added their own to it, and wrote the New Testament of the Bible. Next came, The Muslim/Islamic Faith (750 AD) who wrote the Koran. And if you look closely at all three, they are very similar and yet these three religions have been fighting each other and reeking havoc on the global stage for centuries.

[image error]Ancient artifacts span the globe raising questions as to who we really are and how we got here.

Genealogy combined with world history creates an interesting scenario. If you think about it, the three main world religions have only been around for less than 2,500 years. When you consider how long people have been on the planet; each and every one of you are a descendant of a pagan faith, a time when the people of the earth, worshiped nature and the natural order that we live.

The three main world Religions seems to remove people from nature, so I wanted to get back to nature. What better way to accomplish this than to go back in time when people celebrated the seasons and worshiped their mother earth and father sky? There is currently a movement spanning the globe where people are getting back to nature, people of the Pagan/ Wiccan faiths are reclaiming their heritage. A heritage that was made evil by Catholicism over the past millennium. So, of course I would be remiss if I didn’t include the Wiccan Faith in my series. The people who have suffered the most, during the hundreds of years that Witch hysteria spanned Europe and America. People were burned at the stake or drowned because they dared defy the Catholic Church, by having knowledge or practices that didn’t fit into the fire and brimstone of Christianity.

[image error]Ancient Alien theorist believe we have been visited by extraterrestrials. This guy looks like he is wearing a space suite.

Combining genealogy with history is how Rituals Lost began. One of the first books I ever read as a preteen was, Chariots of the Gods, by Erich Von Daniken. Have you ever watched the show Ancient Aliens on the history Channel? All of the content of VonDaniken’s books and more are covered in the 13 seasons series on the History Channel. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to come to the realization that there is more to our history than any world religion has even come close to acknowledging or discovering,

While researching I have created boards on Pinterest and have collected spells and have joined many Facebook groups to connect with individuals who are currently practicing magic and are of the Wiccan and Pagan faiths, see acknowledgements in my new book, Rituals Lost, for details of my biggest influencers.

[image error]During my research, I came across spell jars, but most prescribe that you take a few herbs and add them to a jar and put it to the side or bury it in the earth. So, I can honestly say that the Fairy/Mermaid jars are my own creation. Although, Rituals Lost is a book of fiction, I always do my best to be as authentic and realistic as possible.

Keep in mind that I only subscribe to that which is positive, loving and good, as the Wiccan Rede states, “An’ ye harm none, do what ye will.”

[image error]The Fairy/Mermaid Lamps

These Lamps have been charged by the Mabon Full Moon, and Himalayan seasalt lamp. I have put the utmost care in creating these jars and have used the strongest symbolism to acquire the greatest strength. These jars are one of a kind as they are made by hand with love and logic and are not mechanically reproduced. They are imbued with blessings and positive energy and retail for $30.00 each. But I am not planning on selling them. I will gift them to my beta readers who are interested in receiving a free copy of the manuscript, Ritual Lost, in which you will read and write an honest review on Amazon, Goodreads and Smashwords. One review copied and posted to three sites.

Fairy/Mermaid Jars Explained:

[image error]Mermaid Jar Symbolism: Water is the element connected to healing, cleansing, and purification, associated with passion and emotion. Blue, is associated with spirit, healing, protection, wealth and dreaming. The blue and green sea glass at the bottom of each jar is associated with: communication, one’s deepest truths, intuition, tranquility, serenity, forgiveness, sleep, and dream work. The sea shells, made from the elements of the sea, like calcite crystals and the body chemistry of the invertebrate, their exoskeleton and homes during their lifespan are discarded upon their death and washed up on the shoreline. Seashells are energy amplifiers absorbing negative energy and releasing positive energy to creative roadblocks. The Silver speckled material of the plush cap also draws out the negative and replaces it with positive energy. The rechargeable battery-operated light symbolizes fire, and the opal glitter: love, passion, desire, intensifies emotional states and releases inhibitions and acts as an emotional stabilizer bringing about loyalty and faithfulness. Dive deep into the core of your subconscious and become one with your spiritual being in order to achieve true and total authenticity.

[image error]Fairy Jar Symbolism: Air is the element connected to the soul and the breath of life. Green, is connected to the earth and symbolizes luck, life, and the heart chakra. The Spanish moss on the bottom will protect your thoughts and dreams from negative energy. The heart and spirit are the same and not associated with logical thought or our earthly being, wholly spiritual. Copper, in spiritual alchemy, is said to bind silver with gold and represents experiences with love, sympathy, and affection, Copper conducts spiritual energy back and forth between individuals, crystals, auras, the mind and the spirit world binding our emotional and logical thoughts together to create something new.

[image error]The rope binds heart and mind, memory and knowledge, spirit with terrestrial being, so our intention is pure. The pine cone throughout the ancient world is the symbol of the pineal gland, third eye, intuition, a reminder to look inward for the answers you seek. The Fire of the little light is to ignite your burning desires and the fairy dust to awaken the spirit within so the magic can begin. Fairy wings give flight to your intentions so they will reach the universe. Wings to give flight to your dreams.

Keep in mind, we must know the right questions to ask before we will receive the answer we need.

My ancestor, Agnes Lennox, of Scotland in the 19th century, is the basis for my fictional main character in my new novel, Rituals Lost. She uses a version of these lamps steeped in the folklore of her ancestors to teach her daughters the ways of their foremothers, as the mermaids guided them to Scotland centuries ago and the fairies guide them to this day. The storyline vacillates between the present day and the 17th century.

Subscribe to my website to read excerpts from Rituals Lost, in the following months until the release in October of 2019!

Can you find the answers you seek without these little lamps? Of course, with today’s modern-day sophistication, all of this can be done during meditation. During, transcendental meditation, with practice and experience, one can travel the astral plane and view the Akashic record for the answers they seek, but this takes great practice and is only attained by the spiritually enlighten. These lamps are a nice place to start, to learn to do things with intention. Doing things with intention brings about a clearer understanding of the subconscious mind and puts you in touch with your spirit.

But in all honesty these lamps are just a cute accessory to add to your decor, the fact that they are steeped in magic and mystery is just an added bonus.

So, make this a nightly ritual;

[image error]Every night before bed, lift the lamp and make the bells jingle calling spirit to your side. Twist open the lid and make a wish, or ask a question to find eternal bliss. Light the light making your wish or asking your question and put it back in the jar, twist the cap back on to lock it up tight. In the morning, you will get your answer, you will receive the gift that makes true intentions known …

When you wake, lift the Fairy/Mermaid jar in your hand and think about your question or wish!

Twist off the lid and shut off the light until, again, it is night.

You can personalize these jars by putting a few drops of your favorite essential oils on the plush lid or add herbs and crystals to the jar to heighten or clarify your intentions.

Sweet dreams…

A lot of thought and positive energy went into creating these jars. Below is the simplified version, sometimes it is best to keep things simple.

And now for the inception of, Rituals Lost, and how it all started:

I have decided to make this a four-part series of posts for the month of October, giving a little more information each week leading up to Halloween.

Honoring our Ancestors

Part 1: October 1st, Mysterious Documents (read below)

Part 2: October 8th, Indian Mound Builders and Missing graves.

Part 3: October 15th, The mysteries of my Grandmother with the Glass eye and my 2nd great grandfather’s will.

Part 4: October 22nd, The Family Farm up in Wisconsin: Did my grandfather travel with Houdini?

Here is Part 1 of the 4 part series and the inception of my new novel, Rituals Lost.

The Mysterious Documents of Agnes Lennox Whyte Small:

As Americans, we lose touch with our homeland, customs and native languages and get thrown into the melting pot and often times don’t even know our heritage. Americans often have several different nationalities until at last we just call ourselves, Americans.

Considering that my grandmother had my mother when she was 38 years of age, and my mother gave birth to me when she was 39, the generations are widespread.

If we are lucky, our families pass down stories that we can hang onto as part of our identity, but like the game of telephone, these stories often changed over time until they contain only a granular of truth. Even written histories get distorted over time, language changes and people update it and perhaps change the original meaning of the text.

In August of 2015, my mother’s sister, Aunt Balbina called me to tell me about her daughter’s death. As you can imagine, it is always shocking news, you never expect it, unless the person had been sick for a prolonged period or they are elderly.

Unfortunately, I had not spoken to this cousin in many years, always thinking that I would soon. She moved down to Tennessee and I was busy raising my children and we just drifted apart. I did think of her often and always thought that I would go down for a visit once I was an empty nester and had free time. My cousin was into genealogy and I thought we would get together and work on it. This brings up the old adage of, ‘never put off until tomorrow what you can do today, as tomorrow is promised to no one’.

Sadly, I will never have that chance to get together with my cousin. Memories from my childhood flooded my mind as I learned of her death. She was the only relative outside immediate family that included me in her family gatherings and had me over for sleep overs and took me camping, I was deeply sadden hearing about her departure and I wanted to do something to link us together, and to help her mother and daughters cope with their grief. So, I decided then and there to do our genealogy.

Luckily my Aunt Balbina is quite a story-teller and has shared some interesting stories with me over the years.

She told me that her father, my grandfather, Edward Balke was the second born, first son of 17 children! He was raised on a 500 acre family owned farm in Wisconsin where Steven’s Point University stands today.  She said he was German and Welsh and might be a descendent of Captain Blood? His mother’s name was Roselin Schultz and came from Boston.

She mentioned that she went up to Wisconsin to look up records and that there was a fire and most of the records were burned and so there was no way of knowing anything further. She had said that my grandfather was given over to the Franciscan Fathers to be raised as a priest. That the first-born son is always given to the church. Since Edward didn’t want to be a priest he left home, built roads across the country and traveled with Houdini for a time and entertained audiences in a pre show. She said he was a hansom cab driver and finally ended up in Chicago where he applied for work at my grandmother’s restaurant as a dishwasher. She also told me that his parents sold the farm in Wisconsin and retired in Bakersfield California.

My aunt is full of cute euphemisms, saying that my grandfather often refered to himself as my grandmother’s, pearl diver, another word for dishwasher as my grandmother valued her dishes like precious pearls.  He was born in 1894, and my grandmother was born in 1888. My grandmother  was a ‘Thoroughly Modern Millie’ of her time, a business owner, marrying a man 6 years younger than her in the 1920’s!

That is the story about my grandfather according to my aunt Bal.

Here is my grandmother’s story as told by my aunt in snippets.

My grandmother, Balbina was born in Chicago in 1888. Her father Martin from Ireland and her mother Agnes from Scotland met and fell in love on the boat to America, where they met a wealthy woman who would become their patron,  and wanted to adopt their daughter because she had no children of her own. Martin and Agnes named their first-born daughter after Balbina Morrison a rich hotelier, who was married to a sea-captain. When my grandmother was very young she had an accident where she lost her right eye, tripping on the boardwalk where an exposed nail entered her eye socket, damaging her eye beyond repair, especially when considering the medical treatment in or around 1890. My grandmother had a glass eye from that point forward. She also had another accident that my aunt only recently mentioned where a meat truck ran over her leg leaving one leg shorter than the other, leaving my grandmother handicapped and disfigured. She owned a restaurant in Chicago on 5th Avenue and Cicero with her uncle Duncan where she hired my grandfather as a dishwasher and married him shortly afterwards. She sold the restaurant after she married Edward and they owned a candy and cigar store for a time where they lived in the back of the store. When my mother was born, they made a crib by opening up a drawer and filling it with blankets for my mother to sleep in those first few months before the sold the candy store and bought the house in Chicago, that I grew up in.

[image error]About twenty-five years ago, my aunt sent me copies of, a marriage certificate from my 2nd great grandmother, Agnes Lennox marrying John Whyte in 1849, along with another marriage certificate to a James Small in 1857, and a death certificate of John Whyte in 1874. There was also a mustard role for James Small serving in the British Army during the Crimean War along with a certificate of his receiving a medal for his service.   And finally a letter to an aunt Agnes from an Agnes Hopf written in 1929. In the letter, Agnes writes about a picture of Granny taken on the ranch in Idaho by a traveling photographer. I don’t have a copy of the picture, but I remember taking a glimpse of it once, when visiting my aunt. An old woman sat in profile on a rocker, wearing a bonnet and a Victorian era long sleeve dress coming down to the floor.

There were a lot of mysteries to be solved and many unanswered questions.

[image error]Unfortunately, I was too busy to stop and consider the mystery of these materials 25 years ago while I was raising my family. I often thought about how my 2nd great grandmother could be married to two men at once during the 1800’s in Scotland. And I wondered how she ended up on a ranch in Idaho and who Agnes Hopf was and which Agnes was her aunt?

My aunt also told me that her grandmother’s brothers went to New Zealand and that no one had ever heard from them again.

So it was all a big mystery and I am still searching for answers, but here is what I found out on ancestry . com website.

As fate would have it I found a message board where a Diana Whyte from New Zealand, my 3rd cousin once removed, born in the same year as me, was asking to find descendants of Agnes Lennox Whyte Small. In fact she wrote a booklet about her life and included pictures of actual buildings of how Scotland looked during her time there. This is what I learned from Diana:

My 2nd great-grandmother was born in 1827, the daughter of temperance Inn Keepers, John Lennox and Agnes McDonald. Agnes married John Whyte in 1849 and was pregnant with her fourth child when John Whyte died on February 4th 1855. Agnes gave birth to Duncan in September of that year. Leaving my 2nd great-grandmother, Agnes Lennox Whyte a widow with three live children to raise on her own in 1855.

[image error]She later met and married James Small who was in the battle that Alfred Lord Tennyson wrote about in his famous poem, “The Charge of the Light Brigade in 1854  about the Battle of Balaclava during the Crimean War. He wrote it on December 2, 1854, and it was published on December 9, 1854 in The Examiner.”   If you get a chance to read the poem you will have a good idea of the struggle and terror that battle was and that a dragoon survived it, is a miracle. My aunt had also given me copies of James Small’s mustard records that show he was honorable discharged in 1856 and received a medal for his service. He stood, 5’1″ and was a police officer at the time he married Agnes Lennox Whyte on October 20th, 1857.

James and Agnes had five children together, unfortunately, her son Duncan Whyte died in 1868, followed by the death of her husband, James. James had suffered from Typhus fever for 12 days resulting in his death on November 27th 1869. Their fifth and youngest child Agnes’s (my great-grandmother’s) was 4 years old, leaving Agnes Lennox Whyte Small a widow with 7 children to raise on her own in November of 1869!

It is difficult to imagine, losing two husbands and two children and finding the will to go on, but Agnes Lennox Whyte Small did go on and supported her children as a 1871 census lists her as Pork and Milk dealer.

In 1873, Agnes’s daughter, Elisabeth Whyte goes to Quebec Canada and met and married John Milne Duthie and gives birth to her daughter Agnes in Canada and moves to Chicago where they had three sons.

My 2nd Great grandmother, Agnes Lennox Whyte Small, comes to America via the State of Indiana ship as the passenger records show, She arrived in New York, on the 17th of August 1882. She then traveled to Chicago with her two youngest children, Agnes Small (my great-grandmother) who was 16 years old and her son Duncan Small who was 14 years old, to be with her daughter Elisabeth in 1882.

I would never be able to keep any of this straight if it wasn’t for ancestry . com. Once you enter the names and certificates and pictures it is there as long as the internet survives.

The death certificate for John Whyte in 1874 was for her first grandchild from her son, John Whyte who went to New Zealand.

Unfortunately, Elisabeth dies in 1885, just two years after her mother and half siblings arrived.  Agnes sent inscribed books to her grandchildren in New Zealand after her daughter’s death in 1885 that the family in New Zealand still has today!

The next thing I found was a solicitation for a marriage certificate for an Agnes Duthie to a Cecil Herbert Hopf in Salt Lake City, Utah on October 4th 1895. Then there are records of the birth of Agnes Duthie Hopf’s children in Idaho along with an obituary of my 3rd great-grandmother Agnes Lennox Whyte Small in 1909.

The Agnes Hopf in the letter written in 1929 was my 1st cousin twice removed and the Aunt Agnes she was writing to was my great grandmother, Agnes (Nee Small) Cottingham living in the house that I grew up in years later.

I searched for Elisabeth Whyte Duthie’s grave. I found the cemetery, Forest Home and went to look for her grave, but it turns out that graves over a hundred years old are no longer recorded. I still need to look into this, because while I was there, I also found out that the civil war soldiers buried there, no longer had markers nor the Haymarket riot victims, that fought and died for an eight-hour work day were also gone. In there place, plaques stating how many people were buried there. So, Elisabeth is still there, but I was unable to find out where, as the cemetery just puts another grave over or around it. I will write more about this in next week’s post, Indian Mound Builders and the missing graves.

Thank you for sticking with me and reading to the end here. Stay tuned for next weeks blog post about the Indian Mound builders, the Haymarket victims and the Civil War soldiers at the Forest Home cemetery.

Excerpt from About Family:

“A little more than kin, and less than kind.”

William Shakespeare

Hamlet Act 1, scene 2, 64–67

  Ivory Tower

Part 3

{Parts 1 and 2 are published in, About Love)

Sally Costanzo gave Jesse Worthington one last, long and lingering kiss before she opened the Jaguar X type door and jumped into the backseat, giggling.

“So, you two are a thing now?” her mom, Sheila asked, as Sally slammed the door.

“Yeah,” Sally said, putting on her seatbelt.

“Well, you don’t have to be so obvious about it,” Sally’s sister, Jemma huffed from the passenger seat.

Sheila shifted into drive with her foot on the brake, clicked on the left turn signal, looked into the rearview mirror and watched Jesse sauntered to Dr. Worthington’s SUV. Jesse’s 6’4” frame hopped into the black Escalade parked behind her. Sheila shook her head, and looked into the side view mirror and merged out of the parking spot.

“When did it become official,” Sheila asked.

“A few days ago.”

“You do know that Jesse is my professor’s son.”

“Yeah, I know. I know,” Sally said, rolling her eyes looking out the window as they drove.

“Did you know that Dr. Worthington was parked right behind us?”

“No,” Sally said shifting uncomfortably.

“A kiss good-bye is fine. Keep it short and sweet,” Sheila said.

Sally hissed and huffed in the backseat.

Sheila knew there was nothing she could do about it, besides Jesse was a very handsome boy and not a bad catch, but the timing of this couldn’t be worse. Sheila left Dr. Worthington’s class and drove to the high school to find her professor parked right behind her. What a mess!

They arrived home and everyone went about their activities. Sheila had to get dinner on the table and write a paper for her Fiction Writing class. The girls went upstairs to their rooms while Sheila prepared the meatloaf, popped it in the oven and went downstairs to the computer to write her paper.

“Dinner,” Sheila called out an hour later.

The family gathered around the round table set for five.

“I got the lead in Marvin’s Room,” Jemma said.

“Congratulations,” Sheila said, passing the green beans.

“That’s terrific honey,” her father, James said, as he passed the mashed potatoes.

“Not another play,” her brother, Donny groaned.

“So, when do rehearsals start?” Sheila asked taking a bite of her meatloaf.

“Tomorrow.”

“What time will you need to be picked up?” Sheila asked.

“My parking permit came in today. So, can I take the van?” Jemma asked.

“Sure, you can drive Sally in the morning and I will pick you up in the afternoon,” Sheila said looking at Sally.

“Okay.” Both Sally and Jemma agreed.

***

In the preceding months, Sheila continued the grueling schedule of working and going to school while maintaining the family routine.

She had a strict schedule for maintaining the house with dinner on the table every night. She would get home from school most days and find Jesse on her couch. Jesse now had his own car and would drive Sally home, hang out and have dinner with the family most nights.

Sally would attend Dr. Worthington class where he always seemed to nudge in a comment into the writing prompts that seemed personal to Sheila as if Jesse was going home and reporting everything to his father about his experiences in the Costanzo home.

“Remember about character development, does your character make their bed every morning, or do they leave it in shambles? What does that say about them?

“Is dinner promptly on the table every night or do they order fast food? All of these literary devices give your readers clues to who your characters are. Don’t state the facts, reveal them in small doses. We don’t want a grocery list of telling, but subtle nuances showing that enable the reader to draw their own conclusions.”

Sheila tried to navigate the situation as best she could, feeling self-conscious and inhibited in his class, knowing that any paper she handed in could be seen by Jesse and thereby seen by her daughter, Sally.

Winter slowly shifted into spring, the crocus gave way to the daffodil and with it torrential rains. One Friday night during a particular bad thunderstorm James shouted, “the power is out,” as he looked out the window.

“Oh my god! What about the sump pump?” Sheila asked running to his side.

“I’ll go check it,” James said with Sheila following close behind. They grabbed the flashlights and went downstairs.

“The water is coming in,” Sheila said in a panic as she watched the water level rising, bubbling up from the sump pump pit and quickly spreading to the dirty laundry laying on the floor. She immediately picked up anything that was on the floor and remembered the power strip for their computer and ran into the office to make sure all of the electrical plugs were up and off the floor. She lit candles so that they wouldn’t run out of flashlight batteries when she heard a gigantic roar of machinery.

“What was that?” Sheila asked as the roar continued to reverberate outside the house. The couple went upstairs to investigate. James poked his head out of the sliding glass door as the rain pelted down on him and looked in the direction of the noise and saw their neighbors had, “Generators.”

“Oh shit, we need a generator” Sheila said. “Where can we buy one,” Sheila asked James.

“I don’t know, Home Depot, or the hardware store.”

“Why don’t you see if we can plugin to the neighbor’s generator while I look around,” Sheila said grabbing the yellow pages.

James put on his raincoat and went outside. He saw a figure wearing a hooded yellow rain slicker two doors down and called out, “Ron.”

Ron turned his head and greeted James as the rain came down in sheets, “It looks like a bad one,” he yelled over the roar of the generator and thunder clapping overhead, extending his hand to James in greeting.

“Yeah. We don’t have a generator. Sheila is in the house calling stores right now. Can I plug into yours until we find one?”

“Sure,” Ron yelled. “But you better get one. This happens all the time.”

“Really,” James yelled surprised.

“Unfortunately, yes.”

“I’ve lived in Clancy for sixteen years, ten blocks north of here and we never lost power.”

“Yeah, it has something to do with the power grid. But you have to keep your sump pump going or your basement will flood.”

“The things they don’t mention when you buy a house,” James shouted, shocked. “Okay, thanks. Let me get my extension cords and I’ll be right back.”

“I’ll be here.” Ron shouted, getting his gas can to fill his generator with more fuel.

Sheila called every store in the area on her cell phone. It was 8:00 p.m. and stores would be closing in an hour, her cell phone battery was almost out. She called four stores, by the time James returned.

James thrust open the door soaking wet and said, “Okay, Ron said we can hook up to theirs. I am going to run the cord through the window well. Go down in the basement and plugin the sump pumps.”

“Okay,” Sheila said going down to the basement.

“Oh my God! The water has reached the stairs! There is about 4 inches of water down here,” Sheila yelled up as she sloshed through the basement thinking about electrical cords wondering what would happen if the power went back on right then while she was standing in water, hoping the water levels didn’t rise any more.

Sheila made it to the basement window, opened it and grabbed the cord that James had snaked down to her. She plugged in the sump pumps and looked around at the wreckage. Unable to see in the dark of night, she knew everything was ruined! Her heart sank but she knew that this fight had just begun. She wadded through the water and went back upstairs wondering how long it would take the sump pump to clear the basement of thousands of gallons of water.

“Oh my god the carpet, the books cases we just installed, the books on the lower shelves, I better get those,” Sheila said and ran downstairs. Once everything was at the highest point that Sheila could get it to she thought of Nick and John, they might have a generator.

Sheila went back upstairs and called Nick he didn’t answer so she left a message. Then with great hesitation she put in a call to John. “Hello Sheila,” Wilma said.

“Hi Wilma. Our power just went out and I was wondering if John had a generator?”

“Likely story. I told you not to call here.”

“I just need a generator. All the stores in the area are out.”

“Too bad baby,” Wilma said and disconnected the call.

Sheila shook a little, partly from being wet, but mainly from the chilly reception she received.

James and Sheila were besides themselves. They lived in Clancy for sixteen years and never experienced a power outage. Their old house didn’t have a basement, so all of this was new to them.

Moments later, Sheila’s cell phone rang, “Hello.”

“Hi Sheila! What’s going on,” John asked.

“John?”

“Yes,”

“I just called your cell phone and Wilma answered.”

“I know. Sorry about that, but how can I help?”

“Our power went out and our sump pump isn’t working. I need a generator and all of the stores are sold out. Do you have one I can use until we can buy one?”

“I do, but it is 10 miles away at a property I am developing in Plainfield.”

“Wow, ten miles isn’t too bad. Can we pick it up?”

“Yeah, let me give you the address. It’s in the back of my service truck, on Route 38 and Plainfield Road.”

“Okay,” Sheila quickly jotted down the instruction and thanked him for his help.

“James, honey,” Sheila called out.

“Yes,” James said coming upstairs.

“I found a generator we can borrow, in Plainfield. Why don’t you and Donny go and get it.”

“Okay,” James said taking the paper from Sheila and called out, “Donny!”

Donny came downstairs, grabbed his coat and left with his father.

Sheila called Jemma and Sally to check on them. Luckily, they were at friend’s houses that still had power. She instructed them to stay where they were. “No sense in coming back here until the power is turned back on,” Sheila had said ending the call.

Two hours later, James and Donny returned with the generator and hooked it up. The family was able to plug in their refrigerator, television and cell phones, but the stove, lighting and other appliances were out.

The power outage lasted 18 hours and the basement was ruined. They would have to throw out the carpet, replace the drywall and Sheila was devastated. The weary couple went to bed that night thinking about how they owned the house for four months and installed everything new. They didn’t have flood insurance so there was no help through their insurance company. [end of excerpt] Continue reading

Super Summer Sale Spectacular!

[image error]I hope you’re enjoying the summer. We are half way through and there is no better time to sit down in a beautiful setting and enjoy a great book. This month I am offering, About Love, for the unbelievable low price of $.99! That’s $3.00 off the cover price!

Book Description: Tired of the same old love stories, of boy meets girl in a mixed-up world? Carly Compass, strives to give her readers, originality, in stunning, thought provoking short stories. About Love, is a collection of stories, and poetry that examines all facets of love. The ancient Greeks had six words for love: Eros, sexual passion; Philla, deep friendship; Ludus, playful love; Agape, love for everyone; Pragma, longstanding love, and Philautia, self-love. The Oxford dictionary has four definitions of love, and within those definitions there are sub sections and that is when love is used as a noun. As a verb, there are more definitions. Love is complicated. Love is a human necessity and can be beautiful, vexing, and a tremendous source of motivation, simultaneously. This collection of poetry and prose scratches the surface and plays with love everlasting in a thought provoking, humorous display of love in its many guises that will surprise you. [end]

Excerpt from, About Love

Desiree

The garden party spilled out onto the cobblestone road of the tiny village. Desiree descended the small hill looking down upon the landscape, noting the tiny white twinkling lights that sparkled and lit up the designated area. A fair-haired young man of undiscernible age walked swiftly up to her, kissed her passionately on the lips, and just as quickly turned and walked away. Standing still from the shock of it, she became incensed at the utter audacity of this young man.

She soon found her footing and followed after him. He wasn’t going to get away with it! She was determined to give him a piece of her mind. The young man’s pace quickened as she pursued him. He vanished through a cellar door in one of the cottage’s outhouses.

Desiree thrust open the door with a passionate fury of her desired intention to find darkness and a stone staircase leading down into the abyss. Her psyche was so bruised, and her intention so clear, that fear of the unknown never entered her mind. Slowly, she descended feeling the air and atmosphere cool exponentially with each step as goose bumps rose on her flesh; the cool air went straight up her white frilly frock, sending chills through her body as she continued.

She heard in the distance, stone on stone rubbing together, as she descended the spiral stone staircase and soon heard the click clack of hooves on stone, like a horse trotting, and the ripping of cloth, like a Hulk transformation. She reached the bottom and entered the grotto of a limestone fortress, with torches blazing from the walls.

Now all she heard was the lilt of flutes, and the murmur of congenial conversation and laughter as she adjusted her eyes to the lighting. The smell of sweet wine, and something roasting in a nearby pit entered her nostrils.

All fell silent as she advanced. The entourage of toga clad natives bearing laurel leaf crowns, stopped basking in each other’s glow and sipping wine from their golden goblets to take note of her. Now all Desiree could hear was the gurgling of a babbling brook, and the crackling of burning fire.

Desiree looked off into the distance to find the fair-haired boy that she had followed.

Pan stood proudly with a devilishly mischievous aura, exuding sexuality from every pore. He displayed a knowing grin on his Rex Harrison face, framed by unruly curly brown hair.

He looked straight into her eyes with a burning desire and smiled, revealing brilliant white teeth. Desiree’s eyes followed his curly brown locks down his broad hairy chest and muscled build as chills went down her spine, she shivered a moment.

There was a familiarity there in his eyes. She felt their deep connection. Desiree smiled sweetly, remembering him, as if their paths had crossed innumerable times, for centuries.

Instantaneously, she knew he was her spiritual companion and then she started to recognize everyone, as the throng of people gather around her in greeting. [end of excerpt] read more

Celebrating International Women’s Day!

In honor of International Women’s Day, in keeping with the #metoo and #timesup movements, I would like to revisit the Electric Series and discuss my new and upcoming releases.

[image error]Check out my new releases, About Life, About Love, and About Family, read excerpts from any of my books in the free 20% offered on Amazon and Smashwords.

My writing has original plot lines and thought-provoking conclusions with a slight deconstructionist edge. I fall into the realist romance category where my goal is to entertain with relatable characters that lull you into complacency and then surprise you with the unexpected.

People tend to stay in their comfort zones, in my collection of short stories I attempt to shake things up with the hope that we can understand, we are all one on this planet and love is at the heart of ambition. Passion and emotion are the determining factors that  drive my characters to  fulfill their desires.

Love takes on many guises: passionate, sexual love, love for parents and children, love for God, the source, our creator, patriotic, and national love for country, love for ourselves, love for our occupation, and love for humanity, in both caring for the world population and those close-knit relationships of family and friends.

I represented all of these examples of love throughout my poetry and prose found within the three aforementioned books in my, About Series, that are sure to entertain and perhaps give my readers a new perspective.

Life is a multifaceted conundrum of love, health, finance and status! Each issue has its own set of complications. Like a budding flower, the petals of our lives do not always reach full bloom. There are facets within and outside influences pulling us in directions that make it difficult to stay the course.

In celebration of International Women’s Day on March 8th, I would like to revisit the Electric Series.

[image error]In the free e-book, Electric, The Beginning, Book 1, we meet the typical Chicago, suburban housewife, Gina Parrot. Gina’s only goal is to raise a happy family that she missed during her tumultuous childhood. Due to financial constraints, she takes a job with the formidable stalker, Mikhail Vladimir. All the signs are there for the reader to explore as Gina’s involvement grows stronger. Will she resist him?

[image error]The story goes deeper into the psyche of each character in, Electric, The Consummation, Book 2, we explore the anatomy of divorce that plagues our world.

With a deeper understanding of each character, Gina and husband, Brad are on the right path, in Electric, The Resolution, Book 3, Themes of love, health, finance and status are challenged and examined ending with a very dramatic conclusion. Was it a heart attack or foul play?

[image error]Gina is now a widow with four children  about to lose it all, when a new world opens up to her, in Electric, The Aftermath, Book 4. Best friend, stripper, Carlotta Vanburen and the cunning mysterious businessman, Don Redmen along with his cohorts are only too willing to take Gina by the hand and lead her astray, as themes of religion, the afterlife, voyeurism, and the billion-dollar porn industry are challenged and examined.

[image error]Gina faces new challenges when she connects with the sexually dysfunctional, Reggie Miller, in Electric, The Holidays, Book 5!  All her dreams are coming true as she trips the light fantastic to New York for a New Year’s Eve celebration, only to meet disaster, as themes of BDSM and the exploitation of women’s sexuality are scrutinized.

Don Redmen is only too happy to pick up the pieces with a little help from big Pharma! Redmen offers to help Gina realize her dream  to build the franchise, Utopia, a health club and new age center in, Electric, The Finale, Book 6. Themes of how women are victimized, exploited and marginalized by the patriarchal society are examined with a shocking conclusion that explores human trafficking.

[image error]Stay tuned for my upcoming young adult novel, Rituals Lost, A Pagan/Wiccan Tale due out in June of 2018. A tale taking the readers back to our roots to save Gia, our mother earth  thereby saving ourselves. The first book in the series will be free.

I am making it a YA novel merely to express that it is a clean novel free of sexual exploits, foul language and fun for the whole family.

Considering earth is 4.543 billion years old, humans have only occupied it for 6 million years and the monotheistic religions only span the last 2,500 years, we are all descendants of one form of Pagan religion of another. With today’s technology in this information age we can comprehend and filter out the superstition and keep the pragmatic snippets of truth.

The current global economic structure of currency is a manmade construct that has hurled our world into economic injustice of 99/1%!

In Rituals Lost, I am creating a new reality of a resource based economy that eliminates class distinction, greed and capitalism thereby freeing the world by a cooperative trade economy that builds people up rather than tear them down like in today’s competitive economy.

Each time we build someone up, the whole world is elevated. In working together, we can end greed, hunger, pestilence and war!

Perhaps this is a Fantasy novel, but my hope is that the hypothesis within will spur minds to enact change. It is my passionate love for humanity and this beautiful planet, that spurs me to write.

Read an  exclusive excerpt from my (WIP), Rituals Lost, starting March 6th on the Pink Heart Society, online magazine. I will be featured/spotlighted for the month of March.

[image error]Coming soon, Electric Series, Part 2, books 4, 5, and 6 combined at a great price!

Also stay posted for free book give aways of the Electric Series, Book 2,  free during the month of April and Book 3, free during the month of May!

Thank you so much for your time and attention.  I look forward to your responses in reviews on Amazon, Goodreads and Smashwords.

Where ever you are and whatever you are doing, make it a great day with focused intentions.
