If you cannot drive, PLEASE CROSSPOST!
This is an urgent and heartbreaking rescue. We got a call Saturday about a family living on chains…a mama (shepherd) and daddy (husky) with a 10 month old pup and six 5 week old puppies (loose and in the road), all starving to death. There is also a horse there, who is starving. Mama, the 10 month old and 4 puppies were surrendered to us. Daddy and 2 tiny pups remain, as does the horse (who they will sell for $200, if you know anyone who can help).
***If you have had ANY sick dogs in your vehicle, please do not risk driving this transport. Young puppies on board. They are NOT allowed out of crate.
If you can't drive, you can still help! Donations are being collected for the rescuer who put all vetting and food expenses on her credit card to get this family safe (and to continue to help the remaining dogs and horse) at http://www.apathwaytohope.org/how-can-you-help.html. Please note "Husky family rescue" if you can help. They want $200 for the horse, and we are trying to offer funds for the remaining 3 dogs (they will likely all die if left there).

Writers (and Rockers!) Support Planned Parenthood
Alma Alexander and John Scalzi are offering to donate the money from e-book sales to Planned Parenthood in the wake of the Susan G. Komen Foundation mess. Here's the chance to read some good writers and help an organization that does a lot of good for lower income women!
edited to add:
As are Sharon Lee and Steve Miller!
Edited to add, via Alyssa Rosenberg and ThinkProgress:
The rock band the Decemberists, which had previously supported Komen with t-shirt sales after one of their members struggled with breast cancer, is now donating those monies straight to PP.

Komen has other dirty dealings
AltNet continues to cover, and gather other sites' coverage of, the Susan G. Komen/Planned Parenthood mess. What have they and other researchers turned up? How about the Komen Foundation's squashing of an entire breast cancer research program because it was following a premise that some cancers are caused by environmental toxins (which the right wing doesn't want anyone to hear)? How about, despite their story that they won't support an organization under legal investigation, the fact that they still fund Penn State--under investigation for ignoring the sexual assault of teenaged boys?
Now Komen says they are revising their decision and will fund Planned Parenthood again. Apparently they only mean to drop people under criminal investigation. (Penn State, anyone?) Given what I've learned about them this week, I don't care. I won't purchase or support anything with their name on it again. I WILL donate to Planned Parenthood directly. With the right's assaults, they need all the funding they can get.
Women's lives--and deaths--should never be a political plaything. I am sick of the people who make them into one.

Shame on you, Komen Foundation!
Edited to add: Update: Resignations, hackage, and more irate feedback for Komen.
The Susan G. Komen Foundation is all about finding a cure for breast cancer, right? And Planned Parenthood offers, among other things, breast cancer screening and care, right? And that's the important thing, right?
Wrong. Apparently it's more important to the Komen Foundation that Planned Parenthood offers birth control services, including abortions--which have nothing whatsoever to do with breast cancer and are really none of the Foundation's business. They pulled their funding from Planned Parenthood.
Before you buy your pink breast cancer awareness items, please read this by Erin Gloria Ryan at Jezebel. She covers what happened and what's going on at the Komen Foundation. And ask yourselves if any group dedicated to any aspect of women's health has a right to play politics or games with women's health and women's bodies. Do people who claim to support women's health in one area have a right to judge one of the primary caregivers in that area because they have a political position? Keep in mind also that if you're giving money to the Komen Foundation, some of it's going to support politics, not women's health.
And if you click daily on the Breast Cancer Awareness site, they've already posted that they aren't affiliated with the Komen Foundation, but the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Obviously they think the Komen Foundation is doing something wrong.

One less body for the execution machine
From the time I first moved to New York City, I knew about Mumia Abu-Jamal, a Philadelphia journalist accused of the shooting death of a Philadelphia police officer during a traffic stop. I've signed petitions and written letters asking that his execution be stopped. Now, after two previously canceled execution dates, at long last the legal system has dropped the execution portion of his judgment. He will be in prison for life without parole. He still claims he did not shoot the officer.
Those who opposed his execution, me among them, point to the poisonous racial atmosphere in Philadelphia then and now. Mr. Abu-Jamal was not liked by Philadelphia's legal system before his arrest. If you read the article I linked to and what the prosecutor has to say, you can see that he still is hated. If you read deeper about the case, there is enough confusion about whether Abu-Jamal was prosecuted because he was a hated black journalist in the wrong place at the wrong time, or whether there was actual evidence against him, to cause reasonable doubt, certainly about the death penalty.
Coming on top of the ludicrous method used, but still wonderful, in the release of the West Memphis Three seems like there might be hope for an end to the death penalty in this country. I would like to see that so very much. Life without parole is certainly punishment enough, and there is more than enough proof that the death penalty is levied against those who don't have the resources to fight it. If Mumia Abu-Jamal had not been an articulate speaker and writer with friends in the journalism community who could spread his work, if celebrities had not picked up the case of the Three, they would all be dead now. Others without those resources die every week, and that goes twice for Texas.
If we're going to go around killing people, why don't we do it like the Saudis, and then televise it? Why be such hypocrites as to hide it behind prison walls and do it in the small hours, where the "good people" can pretend to be asleep?

Singer Etta James moves on to the Summerlands
She had a troubled life, but an amazing voice. Among others, she gave us the hit "At Last," made famous twice over by Beyoncé at the 2008 Inaugural Ball. James was a fighter, coming up from nothing and beating addictions twice to bring us her landmark voice. I know she's out of pain now, and I will never forget her as long as I can listen to her music.
Thank you forever, Peaches.

2012 Greetings
And once again it's time for me to tell you, courtesy of Ogden Nash:
"The clock is crouching dark and small
Like a time-bomb in the hall.
Hark! It's midnight, children dear!
Duck! Here comes another year!"
Happy New Year to one and all! It's an election year in the U.S. and a Leap Year for those of us on the Gregorian Calendar, so it should be a doozy! We can also expect a record number of eclipses, and there are some very good books in the publishing pipeline--something for everyone!

It's time to start blaming the actual rapists
Trigger warning for rape, assault, battering, stalking.
Over and over it happens. You shouldn't have been drunk/drinking. You shouldn't have been there. You shouldn't have gone into his apartment/room. You shouldn't have dressed that way. (I mean you, granny, in your sexy flannel pastel birdie print floor length Lantz nightgown.)
It was you, person who was assaulted/battered/raped. You used your mysterious power for pain, dragged that man over, forced doors to open, close, lock as you made him batter you, as you forced his hands to lock around you, constrain you, and you continued to make him do all those other things that followed. It was all your fault. If you hadn't made him do it by your behavior, presentation, actions, he wouldn't have raped you. He's not that kind of guy. He wasn't in your house looking for someone to rape. He didn't approach you at the bar/club/restaurant/grocery story/playground because he was looking for someone to rape. He didn't follow you because he was looking for someone to rape. He didn't rape you because he wanted to rape. You came on to him. You dresses provocatively. You went to dinner with him and didn't put out. You dressed like a prostitute. You wanted it.
I have an idea. It doesn't matter who the one who was assaulted is; what condition s/he was in; how s/he was dressed; what social activities s/he was engaged in; whether s/he was married to the rapist; if s/he supposedly came on to that person.
The blame is with the rapist and only the rapist. Can we all say that together? The Blame Is With the Rapist.
Now let's go to our ignorant and disbelieving and shocked governmental and judicial officials, our prosecutors, and our law enforcement personnel, and to every loudmouth who sounds off on the subject and say
THE BLAME IS WITH THE RAPIST.
