She's Right

Renee of Womanist Musings writes in Dear White Feminists Stop Erasing My Womanism:

Feminism has long claimed to be a movement to advance women's rights, and yet its history is filled with incidents in which marginalized women are soundly rejected or ignored. Womanism is not a separatist movement. Just as feminism speaks to your experiences, Africanna Womanism speaks to mine. It allows me to articulate my spirituality, my connection and love of Black men, a genuine sisterhood with other...

MAKE IT STOP

What does it take?

What does it take to shame a company?

What does it take to shame a company and those it contracts with?

What does it take to shame the government agencies that let certain irregularities and incomplete safety measures slide?

What does it take to shame a nation that has watched a disaster grow, and grow, until nearly half of its coastline is in danger of dying? Until whole populations are at risk of losing not just their livelihoods for this year, in times that are already hard...

They're dying on the Gulf

cross-posted to tammypierce fanjournal

You knew I had to post about this sooner or later. I just can't bear it anymore: pictures of dead and dying creatures are starting to appear everywhere I go. Here's the place to go for suggestions on how to help, the National Wildlife Foundation.

The National Audubon Society also offers news and a mannerly request for donations.

Yes, there will be a human cost, and we have no idea how far and how high that will reach. But wildlife has been dying since ...

Bret Easton Ellis should return to the `80s--the 1880s

In an interview on Movieline, 1980s wunderkind Bret Easton Ellis (AMERICAN PSYCHO, BRIGHT LIGHTS BIG CITY, LESS THAN ZERO), while talking about the movie adaptation of AMERICAN PSYCHO, delivered himself of this butt nugget with regard to female directors:

>> BEE: ... There's something about the medium of film itself that I think requires the male gaze.

ML: What would that be?

BEE: We're watching, and we're aroused by looking, whereas I don't think women respond that way to films, just because of...

Plot help from women who have given birth, please!

According to the Internet, new mothers do not begin to produce breast milk until 12-48 hours after delivery. Do babies just not get hungry during this time period? Do they get replacements?

Help! It's a plot point now, and I have to cut it, but I need to know what goes on instead, and all of these *&^%$$#!! web pages jump magically from birth to regular feeding. So far I've seen nipple confusion mentioned only once, and no one's said squat about babies refusing to nurse or moms struggling t...

Todos somos Arizona, 2

Here's an update. There's a nifty table partway down the first page that gives brief notes on what's going on per various states and nations. The Mexican travelers' alert particularly singed my tail feathers, though on the other hand, I've been following the Mexican drug wars that have been leaking over into this country in the southern states. Frankly, I want those to go away--I just don't want to sell this nation's principles down the river in order to address that problem.

My hat is off ...

In which Tammy again vents her crazy personal politics

As someone I thought was a friend referred to them where she thought I wasn't looking.

Apparently the revulsion to the vicious "where-are-your-papers?" law recently signed in Arizona is not strictly confined to that state and to those who are demonstrating across America. In a move I for one have never heard of, the Los Angeles city council has voted to boycott Arizona businesses. Yep. A city will officially boycott the businesses of a neighboring state. They mean to cut new city contracts...

Update

We had our first thundershowers of the warm season today. I love thunder and lightning, even though I'm fully aware that they may not always be my friends in a house that is heavy on electronics.

[info:] ginmar , whose lj has reintroduced me to the kind of feminism that makes sense to me (which means it includes a lot of swearing, as [info:] ginmar is an Iraqi vet and has earned her language the hard way), posted that today was the 40th anniversary of the shooting deaths of four students at Kent State...

Tamora Pierce on Twitter

It's been brought to my attention that someone named Tamora Pierce is using Twitter. THAT PERSON IS NOT ME.

Forgive me, o ye Twitterites, but I have enough media in my life, what with two ljs, GoodReads (when I can get there), Facebook, my webpage, and my e-mail. Any more sources of input and my poor noggin will splode. I am not on Twitter. I would not look for me there for a very long time, maybe never, if I have my way.

Whoever you are, tell people you are not me. If you are an honest pe...

Pet Finding

Here's one way I like to find pets, courtesy of webcomic "Nicky 510". The other way, of course, is the shelter!

If you pick up a stray (old campaigners, forgive me for already saying what you know), be sure to keep it segregated from any other critters you have until you have it taken to the vet and tested for nasty diseases. I also strongly urge you to have it spayed or neutered ASAP. There are lots of other homeless animals out there--we don't need to add to the population!

But doesn't thi...
