Peter Farrell studied creative writing with leading NZ writer Fiona Kidman before gaining an advanced diploma in applied arts. He has contributed to a number of short story anthologies and journals and has had work accepted by Radio New Zealand. His short fiction has been highly commended in a number of competitions, including the Katherine Mansfield Awards.

His memoir The Lie That Settles has been described as 'a surprising personal history behind an apparently conventional life.'
