My name is Scott Pearson, and I do exist.

Two of my high school yearbooks misspelled my last name. This added to my stereotypical nobody-knows-who-I-am outcast feeling that many introverted geeks have. The second time it happened I actually marched into the office and demanded to see my records. "Is my name misspelled in my file? Why is my name always misspelled?" I was told that my name was spelled correctly. I'm sure that after I left the secretary said to herself, "Who was that guy?"

Space Shuttle, We Hardly Knew Ye

As the shuttle program winds down a long history full of highs and lows, I'm editing an illustrated retrospective called The Space Shuttle: Celebrating Thirty Years of NASA's First Space Plane.

Written by Piers Bizony, author of many space-related books, including One Giant Leap: Apollo II Remembered and 2001: Filming the Future, The Space Shuttle will cover the entire program from inception through the final missions. I watched all three original Fly movies in a row.

That's some powerful geek-fu.

The first, The Fly is a classic, with its lurid opening scene of scientist Andre Delambre dead, crushed in a metal press, apparently killed by his wife. The movie unfolds like a murder mystery until Andre's brother, Francois, the great Vincent Price, tricks Andre's widow, Helene, into spilling the story of Andre's experiment gone awry, and how she was trying to protect their son, Philippe from the terrible truth.

Return of the Fly is a worthy follow-up. It jumps ah...
