Character Inspiration – Robert

When you write a five hundred old immortal stuck in a twenty-two year old body, things get interesting. Everything about Robert’s life is a contradiction, so finding the right inspiration for him was hard. But we managed.

 

I love this picture.

Robert tends to stare through people, study them, missing very little. The front he puts up is a practiced art form, hiding his real identify from the outside world. But after five centuries, a haunted look lurks beneath his expression.

An embedded pain that shadows everything he touches in his life and one he fears will taint Kyrissa.

Then there is this one!

I hope I look this good when I’m five centuries old.

Robert was so much fun to write because of the complexities and contradictions of his existence. He thinks he has nothing left to learn after five hundred years. Boy was he wrong! Kyrissa turns his world upside down—irritating and exciting him with one stroke of a brush. Although he is supposed to be her teacher, she manages to teach him a few things too. Who says you can’t teach an old immortal new tricks!

Character Inspiration – Kyrissa

So… I’m a visual person. A really visual person. Whenever I start thinking about a character and what that character attributes are and how they look, I always start with an image. And there are two images that absolutely encompass Kyrissa Spears so thoroughly that while writing I tended to rely on these pictures. So I give you Kyrissa (otherwise known as Amanda Seyfried):

All artsy fierce Kyrissa.

All glammed up Kyrissa.

And casual Kyrissa.

Kyrissa was a blast to write. I love how Kyrissa can be soft and feminine, yet when it comes down to the hard choices, she is incredibly strong and powerful. She grows from a young college student, doubting her own talent, into a self-confident, PASSIONATE woman.

Music Inspirations

While writing Pieces of Revenge I went through phases of music. The one song that started the whole book was, of course, Clarity by Zedd. But there were a few other things that I listened to, trying to keep my mind in tune with the story. A lot of these have something to do with the characters themselves. I feel like Tasia or Logan can be the ones singing these words to anyone who’ll listen. Here are just a few:

 I listened to a lot of soundtracks as well. My favorites are definitely the Pirate of the Caribbean soundtracks and Wicked. I can always listen to those.

Oh dear! She’d killed him. He slumped like a rag doll, all boneless.

Millie hadn’t meant to hurt him. He’d been looking for her. She’d heard him call out her name and wanted to let him know she was there. But when he’d turned and walked straight into her, leaving behind his mortal warmth and energy, her soul readily sucked it in, draining him in return.

Kneeling beside his body, propped up against one of the trunks, she touched his face, knowing she wouldn’t actually be able to feel it. She wanted to infuse the energy she’d stolen from him back where it belonged. But like earlier, her hand came up to… resistance. She was touching solid flesh. She removed her hand and touched him again, over and over. How could this be?

The rasp of a light growth of whiskers led her to trailing her finger over his jaw-line. Shocked at the simplicity of her actual finger on solid flesh she didn’t notice the wide eyes staring at her until warm breath cascaded against her exposed collarbone.

He was alive.

Their eyes met. Millie couldn’t look away. Even in the darkened attic she could make out every detail about them—it was as if his eyes were the light for her to move into.

“What the hell—?”

Sean jerked away from her touch and the spell broke. She moved back to give him room and some time to adjust, for both of them.

“Millie?”

She wasn’t sure if she could talk so she nodded her head. A wayward curl spilled from her pile of hair to dangle in front of her left eye. Before she could move the bothersome curl away, Sean reached forward, his hand trembling, and brushed it to the side, touching her face in the process.

“You’re real.”

She shook her head. “I…am…not sure.”

Her voice sounded thready and small but it was her voice.

His hands traveled up her bare arms, sending shivers of pleasure and awareness of being alive again. But still, she wasn’t sure she was alive.

“This is remarkable. Oh, my God.”

She tried to pull away, uncertain about what just happened to her or about this man’s touch. His hands captured hers and he held her there at arm’s length.

“I said I wouldn’t hurt you and I meant it, Millie.”

His rough fingers rubbed along her calloused knuckles. Years of scrubbing and working had left her hands dry and hardened. Their condition hadn’t changed in death.

She pulled her hands away. He was a bold one.

A proper woman didn’t let a man touch her bare limbs so inappropriately. They hadn’t even been properly introduced. She’d been the brunt of many jokes and talk about the town for being so straightforward and brusque with the local gentry. She had learned to be, though. A girl in her position had to be when working with the men she did in her day.

His eyes rounded. “Wait. Don’t go…I want to talk with you,” he blurted out.

Go? She wasn’t going anywhere. She was right here in front of him. Yet she could feel the definite loss of warmth. Frantically she fought to stay in the moment, but nothing kept her from slipping backwards. Energy bled from her soul as quickly as she’d absorbed it from him. Bringing a hand up to her face she could see through herself, watching as Sean stared at her, shaking his head with disbelief. Within moments she was gone, back into a void of darkness… like always.

Who Is Loni Lynne?

Loni Lynne believes fate determines our lives and we are just along for the ride. Holding on tight, she’s managed an eclectic life of moving all over the country in her youth, seeing sights and places her dreams still take her to every now and again. Writing stories since she was thirteen and dreaming of actually writing a book since that time, fate took over, giving her a chance to find material and experiences to write about.

Upon graduating high school, she served her country in the United States Navy where she met her United States Army hero/husband in his hometown of Annapolis, Maryland. After being stationed in Hawaii for their first four years together, they returned to settle in Maryland where they still live, Happily Ever After with their two princesses, who prefer to play with dragons instead of running from them.

I can feel Wilder’s breath against my lips. More than that, I can see it. The sun has set and the temperature has dropped, and air fogs between us. There’s something about actually seeing it, like our lips are touching, we are touching, despite the distance between. And as we sway from side to side, my heart gradually begins to pick up speed.

The strains of guitar music flowing out from the restaurant are nearly indecipherable over the heavy heartbeat in my ears. But Wilder must hear it. His hands are strong on my body, guiding my movements, and I’m practically clay in his palms.

We dance, eyes on eyes, lips nearly on lips, and there is lightning beneath my skin each time his body brushes against mine in a new way. His touch is firm, but gentle, never pushing or pressuring, though I can tell from the dark look in his eyes that he’s just as affected as I am. The music shifts, building to a crescendo, and he spins us. My chest pushes tight against his, and I bite back a gasp. I don’t know if it’s the cold or him or some combination of both, but the tips of my breasts are painfully tight. Just the pressure of my bra is enough to rub them raw.

I remember the night at his apartment, the way he’d taken his time learning my body. I think of the heat of his mouth on my skin, and the memory alone is enough to make me shiver and clench.

He’s back to being business, grown-up Wilder tonight in his button down and glasses. Only now that I know him, it doesn’t seem like such a stark difference. He is neither the straight-laced man nor the tattooed bad boy. Or perhaps he’s both. Regardless of what he’s wearing, Wilder is caring and loyal and strong and so sexy that I’m having trouble remembering why I shouldn’t push him into the backseat of his SUV and crawl on top of him.

This one was VERY hard to sit on. I’m not sure who was more tempted, me or Toni, to leak this masterpiece. I wanted to share it the moment we got our hands on it. Both Toni and I are artists in one way or another and this cover appealed to both of us. The paint reminded me so much of Toni’s own art (check out her previous blog post here where she shared her pictures), yet the images captured the emotions tied into Robert and Kyrissa’s story.

“You keep telling me to trust my feelings.” Kyrissa ran her finger along his lower lip. “Trust yours.”

His mouth sought hers, the taste of her lips more exquisite than the finest wine. He drank her in, wanting more of her intoxicating apples and mint flavor, as well as the one that was just her. The one found only in her kiss. Burying his face in her hair, he pulled her closer, lips trailing down her neck and across her collarbone.

Pulling the fitted shirt from his jeans, her hands slid up his back and sides. Each touch on his skin left him burning. Reclaiming Kyrissa’s mouth with his, Robert fumbled with the buttons on the front of his shirt, feeling her smile when she tried to help him, both of them making it worse.

“Damn it to hell,” Robert broke the kiss, pushing up to his knees to rip the shirt open. The patter of buttons danced across the floor like rain.

“Robert!” Kyrissa laughed at his impulsive action.

“What good is money if I cannot afford to ruin a shirt?” He grinned. “Especially if it is for the right reasons.” He’d ruin shirts every day if she would look at him the way she was now.

Kneeling in front of him, Kyrissa used her hands to push the shirt off his shoulders while her mouth trailed kisses along his chest. “You could have just pulled it over your head,” she teased, fingers working to pull open the cuffs.

“I thought women expected displays like that,” Robert fumbled, distracted by her hands and mouth. In his day, affairs were slower, more reserved. He enjoyed these times better. The women were bolder. More passionate.

“I could get that male bravado bullshit from any pickup in a bar.” Her eyes devoured him. “I want you.”

“Good.”
