New Release: The Singles Game by Amanda Black #interview #newadult #romance

In this third, stand-alone installment of Amanda Black’s Apartment Novels series, sparks fly during a sexy party game.
When Eden Foster’s parents tell her they’re moving from Chicago to the Illinois suburb of Aledo, Eden is crushed. That is, until she runs crying to her jock boyfriend, who she finds on top of her so-called best friend. Moving’s not looking so bad anymore.
Now a senior at Mercer County High, Eden is ready to re-enter the dating scene. Still burned over the betrayal of her ex, she’s looking for someone sweet and innocent. With the help of her two new friends, Zoe and Amy, Eden makes a list of what she’s looking for: an eager virgin, ready for training—and no jocks.
Eden thinks she’s found what she’s looking for in Logan Black, a shy and geeky classmate. But why are Zoe and Amy convinced that the answer to her search is a party game…with kissing?
Eden better get ready, because she’s about to play the Single Game.
The Single Game is the latest addition to the erotic Apartment Novels series, which began with Lily and Ethan in The Apartment and The Blank Canvas.

1. What elements of your own love life influenced this story?
More than I should probably admit! My husband and I were both very young when we started dating. Not quite as young as Eden and Logan, but there were still plenty of bets that we would never make it.
2. There is less angst in The Single Game than in your previous books (The Apartment and The Blank Canvas), can you talk about that a little bit more?
That was most definitely on purpose. By the time I finished writing those books I was absolutely drained from all of the emotions I had dredged up, both personal and fictional. Once I started getting the idea for The Single Game I saw that as an opportunity to just sit back and have some fun. It sounds funny to say that I was avoiding melodrama while also writing about teenagers, but I just wanted it to feel genuine, sweet and loving. Life has enough angst. I wanted to give me and my readers a small break.
3. What motivated you to write a New Adult Erotica?
I was already used to writing erotic romance after the last two books, but I was just really drawn to the story that was growing in my mind of these two teenagers on the verge of graduating high school. It’s such a big milestone in everyone’s life and I wanted to see how this couple would deal with a budding relationship in the middle of all of that.
4. I was so intrigued by the characters in this story. Logan is a shy, geeky, male virgin whereas Eden is a beautiful, confident, and sexually active HS senior girl. What made you reverse these typically male/female roles?
I’m always up for a good role reversal! Honestly, some details of their relationship were drawn right from my own and other people I’ve known. There were plenty of girls who got burned by dating a player and they were much happier once they gave the shy guy another look. Plus, how many of us have said at one time, “I’d love to find a guy with no relationship baggage who I could teach exactly what I like.” Eden takes that idea and runs with it, exploring and discovering brand new things that she and Logan both like.
5. What character in The Single Game is most like you and why?
Definitely Eden. I had the proverbial burning by the ex. Not quite as dramatic as hers was, but that scene came from my ugliest high school memories. I wasn’t back in the saddle until early college but by then I knew what a treasure I had when I found my own shy guy.

Ava spun around and threw the door open wide.
“Noa—!” Her shout died on her lips as she caught sight of him, still standing on her porch with one hand clutched in his hair.
He was breathing hard, as if he’d run around the block twice in the five minutes she’d been debating with herself. He hadn’t moved though. Not one step.
“Noa—” She started again.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean it the way it came out.”
Ava froze, his words ripping through her. He hadn’t meant it. The realization crushed her, mangling her heart. Unbidden tears burned at her eyes. She sucked in a breath to fight them back.
“It’s fine,” she mumbled.
“Ava—” His face fell. “Ava, I—”
Here it comes, she thought. The “you’re a great friend, but…” speech. She couldn’t stand here and listen to that speech. Not coming from him. Not tonight.
“It’s fine,” she said again, trying to find the ability to smile at him or laugh off the entire situation. So he’d called her beautiful, liked her in her dress. So what? Didn’t mean he wanted her like she did him. “You don’t owe me an explanation. We’re friends.” She turned toward the door, ready to flee before the tears in her eyes gave away that lie for what it was. Noah wasn’t just a friend to her.
“Fuck that. We’re not friends.”

Review: Soldier On by Sydney Logan #newadult #romance

Brandon is an engineering major and ROTC student from the hills of Kentucky. Growing up as the son of a major general has given Brandon firsthand knowledge of the struggles military families sometimes face. Now that his father’s memory is fading, Brandon is even more determined to make his dad proud and graduate as an officer in the United States Army. Then he meets Stephanie, and suddenly, his focus is less on his military service and more on the pretty brunette who has stolen his heart. When he becomes aware of Steph’s resentment toward the military, he worries their relationship is doomed.
When faced with the realization that she's fallen in love with a soldier, can Steph’s wounds from the past be healed with love in her present . . . and in her future?

My Review
When Stephanie James loses her father to the military as a young child, a lifelong dislike of all things military blooms in her. She hates that her father chose the military over her and her mother. She hates that war took his life. And she hates the very institution. Enter Brandon Walker, the mystery man who stole her breath at a costume party. Brandon is everything Steph didn't realize she was looking for, and then some.
After telling Brandon about her feelings toward the military, he makes the decision to keep his commitment to the Army to himself, at least for a little while. What he didn't plan on was falling head over heels for Steph, or how much the thought of losing her scares him.
When Steph finds out the truth, she's forced to decide if loving Brandon is worth the risk, or if she'll let him go for good.
When I was given the opportunity to read Solider On, I wasn't sure if I would enjoy the story or not. I don't read a lot of military romances... I don't really have a reason for that, they just don't tend to make their way onto my list often. But I was really glad I had the opportunity to read this one. I found that I really enjoyed the story. Steph and Brandon make an adorable couple.
I love that there wasn't a lot of drama between them aside from the big secret and the fallout from said secret being revealed. Steph's hatred of the military was a little immature, but also understandable given the loss of her father and what that meant for her and her mother for so many years. I love that the story focused more on Steph and Brandon's relationship and then on how they work to get past that issue than on dragging out the drama forever once the secret did come out.
And I really loved the scenes with Brandon's father, who suffers from Alzheimer's. Having worked in health care for many years, I have a deep appreciation for authors who broach that subject and what it means for the families, as well as for the individual him or herself. Sydney did a fantastic job at tackling the realities.
There was really nothing about this story that I turned me off or frustrated me. I'm not sure I'd be able to live with someone and not realize they're military, but then again... how many times have we heard about people living in close quarters having no clue what's going on around them? Ariel Castro, Dennis Rader, Megan Huntmans, and Josef Fritzl, to name a few, all kept the people closest to them from finding out their big secret for years. So it's really not so hard to believe that Brandon could have hid being in the military for a few weeks while living with Steph.
All in all, this was a good, quick read. I give it 4 stars.

Teaser Tuesday: Rhapsody (Teplo Trilogy #2) #romance

If you were looking for more action in the first book, I think you'll be rather pleased with Rhapsody. There are gun battles and explosions and all kinds of action-packed fuckery to be had. Plus, Rhapsody has a lot more of one of my favorite characters, Michael Kincaid. If you like your bad boys mouthy and hysterically funny, he's definitely for you. Rhapsody will release sometime in October.
*****
Someone tapped on the back door.
Lillian jerked in her chair, nearly falling out of it as she attempted to get her feet beneath her. Her bad leg protested, the aching muscles knotting painfully. She ignored them, her heart thumping loudly as she pressed her body against the wall, the gun Tristan had bought for her clutched in her trembling hands.
"Lillian Maddox?" a voice called through the door.
She'd heard that voice before, but she couldn't place it. Lillian bit her lip hard, fear running like a current through her. She was alone, defenseless. Where the hell was Tristan? Or Jason? Or anyone who could keep her safe if whoever stood on the other side of the door came from Teplo?
"Jason Ames and Tristan Riley sent me," the voice called again.
Lillian said nothing, barely daring to breath. She fumbled with her phone, gritting her teeth when it knocked loudly against the weapon in her hand. With stiff, trembling fingers, she tried to dial Tristan's number, only to have to backspace and enter it again.
"My name is Michael Kincaid. I promise you I'm one of the good guys," her unexpected visitor called out again. "Can you please let me in before someone across the street realizes I'm out here and Riley kicks my ass for putting you in danger?"
The line rang before going straight to voicemail.
Tristan still had his phone off.
Lillian hesitated for long moments, terrified to open the door, but unsure what else to do. She couldn't reach Tristan or Jason to confirm that the guy on the other side of her door really was Michael Kincaid, one of the agents helping Tristan with the investigation into Teplo.
"I have a gun," she warned him.
"Awesome," he said, his tone laced with dry amusement. "I'd really prefer not to be shot, so if you'll step up to the door, I'll show you my badge."
Reaching deep for a little courage, she shoved her phone down her bra and aimed the gun at the door. Taking a step in that direction, she sent up a prayer that she wasn't being a complete moron for trusting that Tristan really had sent Kincaid.
A bolt of relief wound through Lillian when she saw the silver badge held against the window pane of the door. And then wariness whispered right on its heels. "Put your face to the door, please."
A loud sigh sounded from outside before the badge disappeared. "If you shoot me, I'm going to haunt Riley for the rest of his life," Michael muttered. Despite expecting it, Lillian still reeled backward when he shoved his face against the window, offering her a cheeky smile.
Lillian had only seen him once, but a flash of recognition shot through her at the sight of his familiar close-cropped blond hair, hard blue-gray eyes, and disconcerting dimples. Letting the arm holding the gun sag, she reached out and quickly flipped the deadbolt.
Michael Kincaid stepped away from the door long enough for her to pull it open and let him in. As soon as he crossed the threshold, Lillian took a quick step away, eyeing him nervously. He wasn't quite as tall as Tristan, but he was as overwhelming. Tristan was a solid wall of lean, contoured muscle, raw emotion, and piercing good looks. With dark hair, olive skin, and scorching blue eyes, he looked exactly like the fierce, intelligent man he was.
Kincaid looked nothing like she expected a DEA agent to look. He had a piercing in his eyebrow, and small gauges in his ears. Dressed in faded jeans and a white tank that stretched across his defined chest, he looked dangerous even without the gun tucked into his pants. Vivid tattoos ran up and down his muscular arms, bold words inked in flowing script amid tribal designs and what looked a lot like the gang graffiti sprayed across parts of the city. He was beautiful in a way that screamed trouble.
He flipped the deadbolt and stepped further into the room, his eyes roving over her. Lillian tugged at the hem of her skirt, trying to make it longer, when his eyes lingered on her legs before raking back up her body.
Heat suffused her cheeks, his blatant perusal unnerving her.
"Damn, Little Mama," he whistled, one brow arching and an appreciative smirk lifting the corners of his lips when his gaze met hers again. "No wonder Riley's all messed up over you."

When Carter is released and Kat continues to tutor him on the outside, the obstacles mount. Can they fight the odds to make their relationship work? My Review:
Spoilers below.
When Sophie Jackson first published A Pound of Flesh as fanfic a few years ago, it quickly became one of my all-time favorites, so when I heard she was publishing it, I was more than a little excited. I grabbed the book on release day and dove in... only to find that it's not the story I fell in love with so long ago.
Let me first say that Sophie Jackson writes beautifully. I absolutely adore her style and found myself rereading bits and pieces simply because I loved the way they flowed. Let me also say that I love Wes Carter and Kat Lane... they're phenomenal characters. They're both flawed and broken, surrounded by people who aren't necessarily good for them. But some of the things I loved most about the story way back when are noticeably absent and that definitely played a role in my inability to really enjoy this story.
We don't really get to see much of the conflict that Kat Lane's job and relationship pose once she and Carter give in to the feelings developing between them, and that's a shame. It's such a massive plot point up until then, and then it just kind of vanishes with little more than a whimper. That bummed me out, because I loved how it was handled originally. The same goes for Carter's fight for WCS. Loved how it was done originally... but I think it was wrapped too early and too neatly here.
Carter's counselor, Jack, vanishes about midway through the story in the same vein. One day he's there, the next we hear nothing else from him. Other major plot points have also undergone serious changes... take Max, for instance. I loved the drama he causes for Kat and Carter and how things ended for him in the previous version... no so here. His story takes a completely different path, and pmajor plot points from the previous version are obliterated along the way. I'm reserving judgement on his story until I read it, but I have to confess that I'm not as excited about it as I thought I would be.
The intensity and passion between Carter and Kat has also been turned down several notches. I think we get two complete love scenes between them. The rest are MIA. That disappointed me, because one thing Sophie Jackson does damn well is write intense, raw sex scenes. I was really looking forward to revisiting those because the woman has a talent for heat and steam, and I missed that.
All that said... I didn't hate A Pound of Flesh. Had I never read the original, I think I would have really enjoyed this story. Having read the previous version and fallen in love with it though, this one fell a little flat for me. Obviously publishing fanfic is an entirely different ballgame than publishing an original, and changes will be made. I'm just disappointed with how many were made here and how much of the story was sacrificed along the way.
That said, I give it 3 stars, and encourage you to give it a shot.

I park haphazardly and climb from the Jaguar. Lewis meets me at the bottom of the stairs leading to the apartment. He looks like he's had less sleep than I have. Dark circles rim his gray eyes. His hair is a mess, and his normally pristine button-down is wrinkled. He's subdued, somber. It instantly gets my hackles up.
"Just tell me," I mutter, crossing my arms over my chest.
"He came in through a window," Lewis says after a moment. "There's shit everywhere." He sighs and then gives me a sharp look. "If you'll stay out of the way for our crime scene guys, I'll take you up, but I will kick your ass back out if I have to."
I shoot him a dirty look. "Have I gotten in the way yet?"
He just looks at me blandly for a moment and then turns and starts up the stairs. I follow behind him, pissed because of his comment and curious about what brought it on. He's been decent thus far. For him to be giving out warnings, it has to be bad. I'm not sure I want to see the damage.
"What the fuck is he doing here?" the cop with the attitude, Whitfield, demands when we make it to the top of the stairs. He's got his feet planted, glaring over Lewis's shoulder at me.
"Don't start," I warn him, holding up a hand. Now is not the time to push me. I will break his jaw if he doesn't knock off the bullshit. I'm pissed. I'm tired. And my girl is with Evans and Lexi, probably crying.
"Whitfield, move out of the fucking way," Lewis barks, not screwing around.
Whitfield's gaze moves from me to Lewis and then back again. His scowl deepens, but he moves out of the way, holding his hands up as if to surrender.
Lewis brushes past him, and I do the same.
"Fucking useless Fed," Whitfield grunts under his breath.
"Anyone ever tell you to shut the fuck up?" I shoot right back at him, swinging around to face him. My hands clench into fists, and I have to fight not to take a swing. I don't know what his problem is, but this is twice, and I'm sick of it.
"You wanna try it?" he asks, getting right up in my face.
"Whitfield," Lewis snaps, grabbing my arm before I can take a swing at the bastard. "Not the time, man. Corbit, cool it unless you want this shit on the news in the morning."
Shit.
I freeze instantly, breathing hard as adrenaline fires through me.
Whitfield glares at me for a long moment and then turns around and stomps off without another word. The other patrol officers standing around watch him go, not saying anything.
"What is his problem?" I ask Lewis, shaking my head.
Lewis eyes me for a moment and then releases my arm. "His cousin worked for Talbot International. He was killed in Africa."
"You're kidding me," I groan, dropping my head back and closing my eyes.

When Savannah Martin walks in on her abusive boyfriend and her best friend in bed together, she thinks life can't possibly get any worse. And then she wakes up in a hospital in Italy, scared and alone. With nowhere left to go, Savannah runs to the family who took her in when her mother abandoned her as a teenager.
But things aren't as simple as they were then.
For starters, two years of constant emotional abuse has broken Savannah in ways she's not sure can be repaired. And patriarch Matthew Talbot has been murdered, leaving his eldest daughter, Lexi, in charge of a global non-profit and her younger sisters.
Jared Corbit, Lexi's gorgeous boyfriend, is the only thing standing between her and whoever murdered her father. That doesn't stop Savannah from falling in love with him. She knows it's wrong, but she just can't stay away from him when he makes he feel like no one else ever has before.
Finding out his relationship with Lexi is a ruse should make things easier, but when the truth is finally revealed, Savannah's fragile world threatens to fall apart. There's a murderer on the loose, and he's gunning for the only family she has. To save their lives, she and Jared will be forced to make a decision that just might destroy her completely.
How is she supposed to let the man she loves be with another woman?

"You made dinner."
"I did."
"Thank you." Her smile widens and she leans forward, pressing her lips to mine.
I groan when I feel her tongue swipe across my bottom lip, all thoughts of her past, Lexi, and the media forgotten. My tongue meets hers and I attempt to pull her closer, but she slides out of my arms before I can even think of deepening the kiss.
"Later," she promises when I narrow my eyes at her. "We should eat."
"We should." I let my gaze rove over her slowly, taking in the way her dress hugs her curves, and her creamy skin. More tendrils of her dark hair have come loose since this afternoon, strands curling around her face.
She's radiant.
"You are so fucking gorgeous," I say, shaking my head, trying for the millionth time to figure out how I got so lucky.
Her cheeks flush and she bites her bottom lip, her eyes riveted to my face as I stare at her. And that look on her face, like she needs me as badly as I need her, sends every good intention I have flying out of my mind. My cock hardens, heat racing through me.
"Jared," she moans, shifting restlessly when she notices me readjusting myself. When she bites her lip again, looking at me with those big brown eyes, I lose it.
"Fuck the food," I mumble, reaching out to grasp her arms, dragging her toward me. Her body collides with mine, crashing into me as I crush my lips to hers, kissing her hard.
She moans into my mouth, her hands curling into fists in my shirt. Mine are all over her, touching and caressing as I devour her mouth.
"Goddamn," I growl, tugging her bottom lip between my teeth and biting gently. She tastes so good and feels even better.
Her fingers slide down my chest, fumbling with the buttons of my shirt, but they aren't coming undone fast enough for me. I need her hands on my bare skin. Now.
Leaning back, I jerk the shirt over my head, letting it fall. I'm so worked up, my breath comes in harsh pants.
Savannah's dark gaze dances across my shoulders, my chest, and down my abdomen, raking like fire.
Christ, how does she do this to me? One look from her, one touch, and I'm completely undone… out of my mind. It's hard, so hard, to go slow with her when every part of me screams to rip her dress off, bend her over the table, and take her hard.
"Jared, I need you," she whispers as I clench and unclench my hands, fighting for some semblance of control so I don't scare her.
