Style Inspiration: Winter White, Camel & Casual

Screen Shot 2015-11-07 at 11.09.59 AM

The elegance of white, winter white, worn during the late fall and winter season fluctuates sublimely between the two arenas of life that make up reality and requirement, playful and professional, cozy and confident. Whether worn with denim or over a pencil skirt or perhaps a sweater dress composed entirely of the resplendent hue, effortlessly chic is immediately within our grasp. Speaking of reverent classic shade, A TSLL reader commented that when the chill arrives, her camel coat is summoned, and I couldn’t agree more. After all, whether you are wearing your favorite pair of jeans or a dress for work, casual can always be a stylish affair. Enjoy a dose of inspiration.

15 Habits for Timeless Style

timeslessstyle

~The Simple Sophisticate, episode #69

Seeing effortless style in-person can be quite powerful, and part of the impactful punch is how the person carries themselves in the clothes they wear. In mere minutes it is evident if the clothes are wearing the person or visa versa. Having the opportunity to have worked and currently work with women who embody a strong, yet effortless sense of style, I am continually inspired to put forth the effort, time and attention to cultivate habits that render an air of calm and certainty.

And while I may not wear precisely the colors, ensembles or sizes these sartorially talented women select, I am reminded that there are habits that each of us can adhere to that make getting dressed each time a absolute treat.

1. Reuse Classic Staples

From the white button-up shirt, to a tailored navy blazer, adhere to your capsule wardrobe and mix and match with abandon. The investment is necessary for consistent peace of mind.

2. Invest in Classic Outerwear

The dream of owning a camel wool trench often epitomizes timeless style, but to want one and then own one is but a dream for most of us. However, with careful savings, once the purchase is made, a lifetime of style can be yours. Whatever your outwear of choice may be: a leather jacket, a Burberry trench, invest and remain confident that style, your style, has been captured.

3. Add A Third Piece

The basics of putting together an outfit are a top and a bottom, but as WhoWhatWear suggests, adding a third piece every time such as a blazer, a statement accessory (hat, scarf, bold jewelry, etc.), a cardigan, a sweater over a button-up shirt or a vest.

hedvig

4. Get It Tailored

Whether the inseam of your dark denim jeans needs to be shortened, your waist nipped a smidge or adding a few darts to your waist, buy a size that allows these precise changes to be made. After all, when clothing is tailored it appears as though it was made for your physique, and in a way, it kind of was.

tailored

5. Add a Belt

Don’t be afraid of your waist. As #15 will remind us, proportions are key to elongating and slimming, and with just the right belt, the eye can be deceived to establish a stunning silhouette.

belt

6. Pressed and Primed

Buy the garment steamer, bring out your iron, take your clothes to the dry-cleaner and present a polished you each and every time.

pressed

7. Handbag Maintenance

Once you’ve purchased the best quality handbag you can afford, tend to it, protect it and keep it clutter-free. Refrain from setting it on the ground (after all, it is bad luck if you believe in such ideas), apply a leather conditioner to keep it supple and when not in use, stuff it with bubble wrap or towels to hold its shape.

8. Embrace Inspiration from Unexpected Sources

Street style and fashion blogs are abundant. Select a handful to check out each week or any morning you are looking for that creative way to pull together a new outfit from what already resides in your closet. And be sure to stop by TSLL each Tuesday morning for the weekly Style Inspiration post.

9. Avoid Blatant Matching

Yes, black and navy can be worn together, and so too can black and brown. In fact, in #11 the idea of wearing one entire color is a must to add elegance to the everyday, but there is no need to match the purse and the shoes, so long as the undertones are similar and the textures complement each other.

matchy

10. Dress-Up Denim

Worn with heels or a polished loafer or knee-high boot, denim will always have its place in a timeless wardrobe. Add a blazer or a stunning silk blouse and denim is immediately taken to new heights.

classics

11. Compile Tonal Colors

Perhaps the color of choice is grey, or maybe winter white. Having the confidence to wear one color in entirety conveys intention as well as simplicity. The key is to know what you have in your closet and play with a color that complements you. Wearing all red perhaps may not be the color you want to select as it becomes the focal point. Rather choose a color that allows you to shine, and upon closer inspection reveals exquisite taste.

tonal

12. Tend to Finishing Touches

A haircut that requires little more than a blow-out and one or two products, make-up that is minimal, yet refined and a subtle touch of your signature scent. Such finishing touches become a habit that you will often forget about but leave a lasting impression.

polished1

13. Reach for a Blazer

When in doubt, a tailored blazer is a dependable go-to. Choose charcoal, navy or black for fall and winter and taupe, grey and white for summer. Add a scarf, pair with denim or over a dress, no need for contemplation, you will be stylish for certain.

14. Save Up & Invest

While the blog allows me to be aware of sales, discount and promos year-round, what I have discovered is that while I have a capsule wardrobe of primarily investment brands, very few have been purchased at full retail price. Have a been able to acquire all of the items that I have desired? No, but by knowing what I need, checking in and shopping around year-round and being willing to wait to see if there will be an opportunity to save, amazing investment pieces have been acquired. And even better, since I’m not actually spending year-round, I am able to save up and make the purchases that I rarely regret.

~TrackIf

15.  Master Proportions

One topic my editor was adamant that I explain in detail in my book was the idea of proportions as it pertains to one’s outfit. Readers as well have asked for explanation, and so I wanted to include it in today’s list. The key is to not divide yourself in half with the clothing you wear, as well as understanding your body. Look at yourself in the mirror. Where is the middle? If you are 5’10”, where is the three foot mark approximately? Never let your clothing (the bottom of your top, the waist-line in your pants or the hem of your skirt or shorts, hit that mark. Instead, strive for thirds.

Book

Beyond a self-help book, Emily V. Gordon’s book Super You will help you tap into the amazingness that dwells within you begging to be discovered. Breakfast in bed, serving drinks to a crowd mingling before dinner. Having a timeless tray that is functional as well as stylish is something to always have on hand, and now West Elm’s reclaimed wood tray has been reduced. While it will come in handy during the holidays, it will also be something to enjoy year round.

Film
~Spectre

Daniel Craig is back. Also known as James Bond, but frankly, I’ll take Daniel Craig (did I just write that out loud?).  Opening today in theaters nation-wide, James Bond journeys from Mexico City to Rome where he meets an alluring widow (Monica Bellucci) of an infamous criminal. Where does the term Spectre come into play? The term Spectre refers to a sinister organization which is infiltrated by none other than Bond. Along the way an unexpected connection is revealed between himself and the enemy (Christoph Waltz). Sounds interesting and certainly something just about anyone as the holidays near.

~Trumbo

A trip back to the late 40s and early fifties when the Red Scare was predominating and decimating the likes of top screenwriter’s careers in Hollywood such as Dalton Trumbo (Bryan Cranston), the film Trumbo chronicles his ability to outwit and even win two Academy Awards that exposed the absurdity and injustice. Flanked by the talents of Helen Mirren who plays Hedda Hopper, a top gossip columnists at the time, Diane Lane, John Goodman, Louie C.K. and others, director Jay Roach tackles the mid-20th century’s delicate debacle. Premiering tonight, have a look at the trailer below.

Shopping

Yep, handpicked by Oprah herself, complete with videos as to how she made her choices, be sure to check out the entire list here. And let the holiday shopping begin!

Travel
~Total Body Moisturizing Towelettes

Moisturizing is key for feeling good in your skin, but when I travel (especially flying), my skin can become thirsty. However, as we all know, bringing along bottled lotion isn’t always an option or can become a sticky mess in our purse. I am excited to share with you a simple, dependable option: Total Body Moisturizing Towelettes. I was given more than a handful of Luv Pur Moisture’s moisturizing wipes to review, and instantly I discovered why I will now be packing them in my carry-on and in my luggage instead of any more lotion. Exclusively moisture (not a cleanser), simple to use and easy to pack. For less than $27 you can order 15 packages, and larger options are available.

8 Ways for Introverts to Thrive in the Workplace

introverts
~The Simple Sophisticate, episode #68

As an introvert in the workplace, it can sometimes be difficult to navigate successfully without being labeled cold, stand-offish or supercilious. However, each of these labels are inaccurate and misunderstand an introverts needs as we are merely trying to refuel, reenergize in the brief moments we have that are quiet, often by ourselves or with a select individual that we trust.

In 2012, a post that readers revisit again and again if they too identify as an introvert, I shared the relief I found in understanding my tendencies to enjoy my own company, why I became drained after extended times of group or together time and why I prefer fewer, yet more intimate relationships rather than share all my business with casual acquaintances. Since that time, I have been curious which type of jobs would be best suited for introverts, wherever they might fall on the continuum. And what I discovered is that technically, very few jobs fit ideally with our needs unless we work on our own. Even with self-employment such as writing, designing, etc., we still at some point have to work or interact with other people who we aren’t intimately involved.

The best advice when it comes to successfully navigating our work environments regardless of the type of career is to establish a routine and a way of working that allows us to perform at our best. Today I am going to share with you 8 ways I have cultivated a teaching environment that helps me refuel so that I can be on the top of my game when the students walk in the room, as well as work with my colleagues in a manner that is helpful and respectful. However, no matter where you work, hopefully you will find inspiration to apply to your daily work routine as well.

1.Carve out Alone Time

In any career that requires you to work with crowds of people nearly all day, it is imperative that time is carved out each day to catch your breath. As a teacher, I genuinely enjoy the six periods a day I teach. After all, being an introvert doesn’t mean you are shy or can’t excel when required to be “on stage”, it simply means such situations drain you rather than energize you.

As a way to refuel regularly, I will have lunch on my own. Making sure to either pack a book, the latest issue of a magazine or catching up on the daily newspaper, I take a deep breath and slowly feel myself become re-energize for the second half of classes that will be walking through my door. However, balance is key. So I will have lunch with colleagues maybe once or twice a week to stay caught up and touch bases on their lives and the goings-on within the school, but once I communicate why I enjoy my lunches alone a majority of the time, most of them are quite understanding and respectful.

2. Establish One or Two Close Relationships

Introverts aren’t tremendous fans of small talk and rather prefer productive conversation and activities. That being said they also don’t tend to share personal information with just anybody to keep the conversation going. Silence is okay for us introverts and trust is paramount. So while you may know everyone’s name at work and are sincerely friendly as you cross paths throughout your day, fostering a few close, trusted relationships will make your workplace feel more welcoming and give you (as well as your colleague/friend) a trusted place to just talk without judgment or worry about your job. After all, sometimes we do just need to vent as not every day runs smoothly.

3. Practice Clear Communication

As I mentioned in #1 briefly, the key to working in an environment that is understanding of why you need more time to yourself is communicating clearly to your colleagues. Now by no means do you have to get on a megaphone and announce to the entire staff or department, but perhaps to your two close colleagues and then the word will slowly work its way around. Depending upon your relationships with your boss or administrator, you may feel comfortable letting them know, but it shouldn’t be something you proclaim in the interview or make a point of sharing as it may appear as an excuse (which it is not). The key is to reveal the strengths that being an introvert yields to the work environment. See #4 as an example.

4. Offer to Contribute Independently

Group work is often touted as the best way to collaborate, when in reality, studies have proven this incorrect time and time and again. Dependent upon the personalities and work that needs to be completed, the best work will be produced when the strengths of the individuals in the group are allowed to shine. Introverts tend to be most productive when they work on their own as they are comfortable working by themselves and find energy from letting their minds wander. This energizes them, and the results can be impressive.

Knowing this, offer to work on projects that allow for independent involvement. When your boss and colleagues see the proof of why you wish to work alone, more likely than not, they will respect your future requests.

5. Be Mindful of Fellow Introverts and Understanding of Extroverts

As someone who is an introvert, I try to not force my students to work in groups all of the time. It is easier for me to recognize students who have introverted tendencies, so if they want to work alone, as long as they are productive, I am usually always open to this. Conversely, extroverts thrive when they work with others, so I try to incorporate this opportunity as well. It’s a tricky balance, but being mindful of how to allow others to perform at their best will garner more respect and potentially the best outcome in production.

The same can be said of working with our co-workers. Be mindful, be open and you might just be amazed at the results when you have this conversation with those you work with.

6. Create a Sanctuary in Your Work Space

If you have an office or a space that is designated for you exclusively, take the time to surround yourself with comforts that calm you down and allow you to work at your best. I spoke about this earlier this fall when I shared 25 ways to have an efficient office space, but the key is knowing yourself.

For example, tea helps calm me down, as does having nature in proximity. I feel fortunate to have nearly floor to ceiling windows along the west wall in my classroom, so it is quite easy to spend my afternoons grading with the sun beating down on my back long after the students have gone. I cannot tell you how many times I have walked out of the building, papers graded and a bounce in my step.

7. Seek Out Restorative Activities

Maybe you have time to take a walk during your lunch, or maybe you can even shut the door to your office and meditate for 10 minutes during a break each day. Whatever the restorative activity is, get into the habit of indulging regularly. It need not be long or disrupt your work schedule, simply tap into what is available and listen to what you need. Maybe it is simply getting out of your office and walking throughout the building to see who you meet. Or maybe it is tuning in to your favorite station on Pandora. Whatever it is, give yourself this comfort without guilt, and the days at work will be much more enjoyable.

8. Establish a Consistent Schedule

Another tendency of introverts is that we don’t typically like surprise visits or drop in visitors as we do treasure our alone time and don’t want to be interrupted. As a preventative measure because most of us do have to work with others, establish clear office hours when you are available. Whether it’s in-person meeting times or expectations of your response regarding email. Make it clear that you will, for example, respond to email within 24 hours during the work week, however your weekends will be work-free.

Something that has not only helped me, but more importantly the students, is that I have posted office hours in which I make myself available to students outside of classroom time. The key is to be consistent so your customers (or students) and co-workers can depend upon you and communicate upfront and clearly. Another idea that has worked very well for me is an online presence. This allows me to communicate clearly without actually being present. Students and parents can check in when it best works for them. As we know, having an online presence is practically assumed in nearly every vocation, but it actually can save you time and build rapport as visitors will have a chance to “get to know you” on their own schedule.

Once we each recognize our personality tendencies, strengths and ways of best navigating each day, the quality of our everyday lives improve. Whether you are an introvert or not, hopefully we all will recognize that each person, upon getting to know themselves, has a way of performing at their best. Understanding each other is a crucial component to reaping the results we desire. When we assume, we do ourselves and everyone else no favors. So in an effort to help ourselves out, cultivate a work environment that helps you make the workday even more enjoyable.

Style Inspiration: Bring on the Chill

chill

Surprise! An extra post for the last day of October!

A new exciting challenge I have on my hands with my relocation is dressing warmly often while simultaneously looking pulled together. The temperatures are already regularly below freezing each night and the highs don’t look to be topping above the mid-50s anymore. From warm coats for work and play as well as exercise, to boots, gloves, hats and scarves, new items are on my watch-list.

After taking advantage of Emerson Fry’s coat sale this weekend, the warm winter work coat search has ceased, but now I am looking for inspiration regarding how to pull it all together. Have a look below for a few ideas if you too are looking for warmth and style.

Therefore, the day, no matter what may have occurred, is placed on the shelf, allowing me to unwind, relax and appreciate the ingredients I get to work with. Author and cook Dana Velden released a book this past September, Finding Yourself in the Kitchen that is compiled of essays that while offering practical cooking tips also explores the what cooking can teach us about life. From being curiosity to finding the beauty in the unexpected, if you’re looking for a book to read each night before you go to bed, this may be a lovely evening pairing to your nightly ritual.

I will admit, I have never seen Hamlet performed on stage, and it has been ages since I have read or taught the play. However, one of my favorite Shakespearean plays, so when I heard Benedict Cumberbatch was starring as Hamlet, my ears perked up. While his performance began on August 5 and wraps up tomorrow (October 31st) in London at the Barbican Centre, a handful of select cities will be able to see his performance in their local movie theater. I have my eye set on the November 21st offering in Portland, but there are many dates and times, so be sure to check here to see if you will be able to enjoy the performance even if London isn’t your primary zip code.

The last few days of October are upon us. I can hardly believe it. However, the good news is that pumpkin desserts and other delicious gourd recipes have ample time to be enjoyed. In particular the dessert above is looking quite delectable, and very simple indeed.

While I will be taking it easy this weekend, which is a sweet dream come true for me, I will be planning and dreaming, losing all track of time which is never a bad way to spend a few days of leisure, no? I do hope you have scrumptious plans for the weekend.
