A returning guest to the podcast, author and blogger Sharon Santoni joins me to talk about her new book My French Country Home: Entertaining Through the Seasons. Her book offers a beautiful glimpse into her everyday life as readers will discover inspiration for each season as they go about hosting formal and casual gatherings, using what the yard and market give them, all the while being present and savoring the everyday.

From ideas for the hostess/host to shifting into appreciating the everyday simple luxuries rather than brushing them aside, we had a lovely conversation that is full of ideas and inspiration as well as a a more intimate understanding of the life so many readers have come to love and appreciate that is Sharon Santoni’s.

In the above photos, meet Gibson and Ghetto (on her lap) on her property in the country as well as the front yard and entry to her French country home.

My Stylish French Box: Enjoy The Seasonal Gifts of France Wherever You Live

The scents of Provence were brought into my home today as My Stylish French Box arrived from France.

You too can bring the sensual scents and delectable flavors as well as carefully curated French style into your home each season with a subscription to blogger and author Sharon Santoni’s My Stylish French Box.

Upon visiting her blog My French Country Home, you will quickly come to trust Sharon’s taste and appreciation of the simple luxuries of everyday living. As she will discuss on The Simple Sophisticate podcast tomorrow morning (click here to listen if you’re reading this on or after August 9th), when we pay attention and savor the seasons, the everydays come alive, all the more enriching the quality of our lives. With her new book having just been released today, My French Country Home: Entertaining Through the Seasons, readers will discover ample inspiration for their lives no matter what season may be upon us, which is why I wanted to introduce you to her Stylish French Box.

Upon subscribing (you can subscribe for an entire year, or pay per season or even give as a gift), lovers of France will receive carefully selected goods made by artisans and craftsman in France as well as well-established companies that offer quality products often hard to find in the states or not available to be enjoyed at all. From beauty to home and food, the surprise on your doorstep every three months will, if you are anything like me, bring a smile and a hop to your step, transporting you away to France if only in your mind.

Have a look at my Instagram Stories feature to see what I discovered inside My Stylish French Box just hours ago. Feeling spoiled doesn’t adequately describe the joy, and the house is full of the beautiful aroma of lavender.

So how much is it? For a seasonal delivery (every three months), you will pay $195 a season. If you would like to pay for all four seasons at once,  you will receive a discount and pay $700. And as I mentioned, what better gift to give to the Francophile in your life (the holidays are coming up!): Pay $205 for a gift box (one season only) to bring absolute delight to your loved one’s home and everyday life.

With the taste and discernment of Sharon Santoni, each season delivers a sweet surprise, and if you would like to bring a few regular simple luxuries into your life, this certainly would be a choice to love. Click here to learn more about subscribing, and have a look below to see what has been delivered in past seasons.

Where to Stay in France While Traveling: 16 Luxurious Options

Where to Stay in France While Traveling: A Variety of Luxurious Options

The options of where to stay in France during your vacation can seem endless, but at the same time hard to find. Since this summer I have been making my own reservations for next summer’s holiday, I have learned a lot and I wanted to share.

Below you will find options for luxurious stays (chateaus – oh my goodness yes), as well as reasonably priced accommodations with a touch of luxury.

My preferred accommodation when I travel is usually a full home or apartment as I enjoy having my own kitchen, living space, etc. But sometimes having the amenities of a hotel is a the best decision especially after arriving in Paris with a touch (okay, for us west-coasters and Aussies, a lot) of jet lag. What I have done is perused boutique hotels in Paris that I think you will enjoy: a few are luxury stays and a few are budget-friendly all the while being located in ideal arrondissements.

But there is more to France than Paris. As I will be spending most of my time in the countryside next summer, I have found luxurious options for vacation rentals as well as bed and breakfasts, known as chambres d’hôtes in France.

As always, checking with Airbnb and Vrbo (links at the end of the post) are wonderful options to save money. My experience has been quite positive with both; however, while some rentals are available to be reserved a year in advance as I did, some are not as they are family homes and to know their schedule so far in advance is difficult. As an upcoming guest on The Simple Sophisticate podcast shared with me, Airbnb is ideal for reserving when last minute plans are made, and I think she has a point. So if your plans are well in advance, peruse the options below, and if you have a last minute opportunity to getaway, while you will want to check all of the destinations listed here as discounted rates often are made available to fill the rooms, don’t forget Airbnb.

Most importantly, enjoy dreaming about your next visit to France which is part of the fun, non?

Be sure to check the cancellation policy before making your reservation, and for rentals expect to pay a partial payment up front and the remainder a few weeks in advance. Hotels will often just require a credit card number to hold the room without a deposit.

And now to planning your dream vacation. Bon voyage!

Paris
Luxury Vacation Rentals
Haven In

Perhaps you follow one of my favorite Paris-based blogs, Hip Paris, and if you do, you know you can trust their taste and passion for living well in the City of Light. Haven In (formerly known as Haven in Paris) offers luxury vacation rentals in both Paris and Provence, as well as Umbria and London. During my last visit to Paris, I had the opportunity to tour more than three of their rentals and share first-hand glimpses into the careful attention they take to ensure you are welcomed and have a wonderful stay. Hands down, true luxury will be enjoyed if you book with Haven In.

Paris Perfect

Luxury and beautiful views of the City of Light will be yours, as well as the classic French windows. Primarily all of the rentals are located in Paris, but Provence, Bali, London and a few are located in Italy as well.

Paris Vacation Apartments

If you, like myself, are smitten with the Le Palais-Royal in the 1st arrondissement where Colette used to call home, then you will want to check out Paris Vacation Apartments as they have more than a few duplexes and triplexes directly situated in this must-visit location. Open your windows to the public gardens and be sure to visit one of my favorite consignment shops while you are there. While Paris is where most of their rentals are located, there are a few in Bordeaux as well.

Boutique Hotels
Hôtel Particulier Montmartre

Located near . . . you guessed it Montmartre, this five suite Parisian home was recently renovated by manager Oscar Comtet and opened to the public in 2016. With a restaurant, bar and gorgeous outdoor dining opportunities, escape to a bucolic setting while in the city of Paris. Suites begin in the mid $300/night.

Hôtel Providence

Ranking in the top 10 list compiled by The Telegraph this past May of best boutique hotels (see the entire list here), the prices are very reasonable (approx. $180/night). Built in 1854, the neighborhood is on the right bank in the 10th arrondissement in the Haut-Marais district and near the Saint Martin Canal.

La Roch Hôtel and Spa

If you are looking for luxury near the heart of Paris, the Opera and the Louvre just outside, step into this posh accommodation. Making Conde Naste’s 2017 “Hot List”, Parisian interior designer Sarah Lavoine is behind the chic, yet casual aesthetic. With rainfall showers in even the coziest of rooms, prices begin just under $400.

Hotel Thérèse

An affordable place of luxury. A frequent choice of fashion editors during fashion week due to its proximity to the Palais-Royal, it is also nearby the Louvre and Palais Garnier. With rooms beginning just under $200, the woman behind the hotel Sylvie de Lattre began with Hôtel Verneuil and then Hôtel Recamier and now Thérèse.

Hôtel Arvor Saint Georges

Self-described as discreet luxury, located in the 9th arrondissement, for your money (a classic room is fewer than $150), you are going to have a wonderful accommodation. A clean, simple, country aesthetic, owned and created by Nadine Flammarion, whose name may look familiar (she is a member of the family behind the French publishing house Groupe Flammarion). With complimentary afternoon tea each day, a chocolate on your pillow each night, and a library to enjoy breakfast as well as relax in after excursions, the Hôtel Arvor Saint Georges would be an ideal home base.

French Countryside
Chateau Bed and Breakfasts
Bienvenue Chateau

If you’ve ever wanted to live in a French castle, this is the website to begin your search for a Chateau Bed & Breakfast, or as the French call them chambres d’hôtes. With hundreds of castles in all different regions of France, peruse the selection and let the day dreaming begin. Many of the chateaus also offer a gourmet dinner as well as the prerequisite breakfast. Have fun exploring!

Note: If you are looking for a tailored excursion including accommodations in the countryside of France involving the history and the many chateaus, reach out to Countess Connections who I have had the lovely opportunity to communicate with as I made my reservations at her and her husband’s family chateau for part of my trip next summer. She is your guide for a luxurious vacation.

Stopover Connections

If you are looking for Bed & Breakfasts, chateau or in a nice estate, as well as keeping your options for a lovely hotel in the countryside, check out Stopover Connections. Many of the chateaus are also found on the above Bienvenue Chateau site as well.

Vacation Rentals
At Home in France

With a wide variety of vacation rentals set throughout the French countryside as well as in Paris, similar to Airbnb, you will find a range or price points.

French Connections

Find a vacation rental in a variety of regions throughout the French countryside. This website is based in the UK, and includes chateaus as well as homes.

Just France

With rentals available all over France, be sure to check out Just France which also includes rentals in Paris. More luxury accommodations are included, as well as hotels in the countryside, but there are a variety of price points.

Charming Houses

For charming and luxurious holiday rentals in the south of France as well as the Alps and Corsica, check out this site (the San Francisco Bay Area also is included as well).

The Luberon

Do you remember where Peter Mayle’s massively successful first memoir was set in Provence? You guessed it – Luberon! And now you can find a lovely cottage rental in that same town with The Luberon.com with more than 150 to choose from.

Only Provence

Just as the company’s name suggests, all of their vacation rentals can be found in the south French region of Provence, and there are oodles of luxurious, home-away-from-home options to choose from.

Always worth checking out for great prices:

Airbnb
Vrbo

~If you have had a positive experience with another vacation rental site or would recommend a hotel in Paris, please do share in the comments.

Effortlessly French

While effortless does indeed take time to conceptualize for each individual, once you understand what works well together on your body and for your life, the decisions are fairly simple. As seen in the outfits compiled in today’s Style Inspiration post, there are no overt labels, no excessive accessorizing, but rather beautiful individuals exhibiting ease and confidence. In other words, the clothes remain in the background and enable the woman to shine.

9 French Online Clothing Destinations & Brands You Must Visit

Iconic, classic, effortless, and of course sophisticated. Add a drop of signature intrigue and unabashed femininity and you have described the nine must-visit French fashion brands to visit online or find in stores.

Of course I could mention the classic brands: Yves Saint Laurent, Isabel Marant, Chanel, Dior, and the list goes on, but how do we achieve our essential quality style while remaining within our budget and not having to purchase on sale? By visiting these sites and putting your name on their mailing list in order to have the best selection when new collections arrive.

I’ve done some shopping for you, but be sure to take a look at the entire site and see what they offer in entirety. Enjoy finding your French mystique style!

Sandro

Offering sophisticated essentials at mid-range prices. You will find neutral colors and classic cuts with a touch of modern flair. Case in point: Note the pink velvet sandal.

SHOP SANDRO:

Maje

Maje is young and coquetteish and feminine. However, there is a modesty about the lengths of skirts (midi) and touch of retro aesthetics.

SHOP MAJE:

Sézane

Summer leisure. Sézane is completely online, offering original designs for the everyday, casual living you love. Many items are sold out, so you will want to stay on their mailing list to be the first to visit when new designs arrive.

~SHOP SÉZANE:

Eres

A luxury French lingerie brand founded in 1968, as you will see from samples below, offering exquisite lace and careful attention to detail without the padding and constricting boning. You will find them online, as well as at Spring, Net-a-Porter and Barney’s and a handful of other online locations. (Finding a quality lingerie brand is worth the search, and you can find a few more I have discovered here and here.)

SHOP ERES:

Claudie Pierlot

Maje, Sandro and Claudie Pierlot are cut from the same cloth, and offer similar price points, but each have their own slant on French style. A sophisticated city chic aesthetic, and a multitude of black with a few beautiful pops of color.

SHOP CLAUDIE PIERLOT:

~Bourgeoise top (red)

~Vanille Jacket (black)

~Trevor red and white stripe T

~Review Dress (black with white dots)

~Goodbye Trench Coat

~Ginko Coat (light blue)

Paul & Joe

Named after the designer’s two sons, Sophie began a fashion label to step away from the monotonous black and minimalism and brings men and women vibrant, young styles that take a new approach to the classic use of neutrals. A mid-price range brand, you will see the designs during fashion week, and it certainly is a label for bookmarking and returning to season after season.

SHOP PAUL & JOE:

~Piemont Top (white)

~Navy cashmere Napolie pullover

~Kyoto Jumpsuit

~Octave bag (on sale)

~Avignon Shirt (white)

~Jill top (lace and silk)

Nathalie Dumeix

A small boutique located in Paris’s 12ème arrondissement, be sure to pop in if you are visiting the city. But in even better news, you can purchase her clothing online as well. Described as quintessentially Parisian with high-waisted, neutral colors (navy, ecru, earth tones and denim), even Jeanne Damas (who I will introduce below) wears many of these styles.

SHOP NATHALIE DUMEIX:

~Marin Navy Cashmere Pullover

~Marin Ecru Cashmere Pullover

~Eline Navy Skirt

~Jim Jeans

~Denim Jumpsuit

Eric Bompard Cashmere

Having talked about Eric Bompard as my go-to for cashmere, I cannot neglect to include this online and brick & mortar (when you are in Paris stop in – along the Avenue des Champs-Élysées & in the Marais district). Quality cashmere items including scarves and accessories, their color selection is nearly limitless and their cuts classic along with unique prints and designs each season. As someone who has broad shoulders, I always order a size (sometimes two) larger and am always pleased with how it fits.

SHOP ERIC BOMPARD:

~Bolshoi Square Scarf

~Classic V-Neck Pullover (many, many colors)

~Maxi V-neck pullover

~Zipped Teddy

~Extra Fine oversize V-neck pullover

~Dancer neckline fitted crew neck pullover

Rouje

No doubt you’ve seen the woman behind the Rouje brand on Instagram, in a few of my Style Inspiration posts and at the top of Street Style fashion in Paris. Jeanne Damas‘s first collection epitomizes what fans appreciate about her feminine sophisticated French style. Subtle prints, flattering cuts and sensual fabrics. Many (and I do many most) of the designs are sold out; however, as I did, you can put your name on the mailing list to be notified when they are restocked (they are going to restock most of the items which have sold out).

SHOP ROUJE:

~Yasmine Blouse

~Gabin Dress (white & red) & Navy & White

~Gigi Dress

~Alix sandals

~Jean Sabina

167: My Good Life in France: Author Janine Marsh

Author and now full-time resident French blogger Janine Marsh joined me on The Simple Sophisticate podcast today, and I must say, it was a most enjoyable conversation. I could have easily talked another hour or so just asking more questions about her life in France. But the good news is I can hop over to her blog The Good Life France at any time which is a wealth of a resource for all things France.

My Good Life in France: In Pursuit of the Rural Dream is Marsh’s first book which is a detailed memoir of her journey from being a full-time Londoner, to buying a rundown barn in the northern countryside of France to refurbish and visit on weekends and holidays, to eventually becoming her and her husband’s full-time residence. The writing offers vivid imagery and insightful life revelations. All of this and more is discussed in today’s interview.

Below are a few images of the small town she now calls home along with a handful of the many animals who make their residence on her property: chickens, ducks, a cockerel named Gregory Peck who has an adventurous welcome story to their home which Janine shares in her book, as well as one of her many dogs, Bruno.

I think you’ll enjoy and get swept up in dreams of France. Thanks for stopping by and tuning in.

A Lifestyle Blog Designed for Francophiles: TSLL

Last October TSLL underwent a major redesign, and an important component was curating French-Inspired resources and destinations for readers to easily navigate, enjoy and visit year round.

Did you know that TSLL has a City Guide of Paris, map and all?

Discover each destination I highly recommend based on my first-hand experience and learn a quick note of what I loved the most about each destination.
This is continually added to as I return on future trips
New French destinations will be added to TSLL’s City Guides in the future as plans are being made to return!

An entire spot on TSLL’s Menu on the homepage is dedicated to French-Inspired everything:

TSLL Posts – discover all of the French-Inspired posts from the past seven years
Francophile Finds – French Films, Cookbooks, Books, Travel Guides, Music and any French product that I recommend is included here (warning: the list is long, so enjoy perusing!)

On TSLL’s Home Page, about half way down, there is a permanent spot for the most recent French-Inspired post. It is right below the “Weekly Finds” scroll, so you can always be assured you haven’t missed a French post. Of course, all of the most recent posts start at the top of the homepage and work their way down, but forever will remain the most recent, no matter when it was written, in this destination.

Many listeners of The Simple Sophisticate podcast have shared they tune in as soon as they hear a French-inspired episode has aired. I wanted to share with you a list of all them, so you can make sure you haven’t missed any:

#4 – 10 Ways to Unearthing Your Inner Francophile

My 10 All-Time Favorite French Books

Shelves of French-inspired books, novels, historical fiction and culture do I have in my office, and this does not include all of the cookbooks in my kitchen.

Needless to say, new readers to the blog have been asking for my go-to, most recommended French reading material, so I pulled together a list of my top 10, minus cookbooks (as that is an entirely different difficult list to make). As you peruse down the list, you will notice, I couldn’t keep it entirely contained to 10, but I did my best.

1. A Year in Provence and  Toujours Provence by Peter Mayle

As shown on my Instagram pic above, I am currently rereading Peter Mayle’s book which set off a whirlwind of French-inspired reading material, A Year in Provence, followed by Toujours Provence. The memoirs kept coming of his life in the south of France, and the readers still haven’t had enough. Will he write another? We can hope!

2. The French Beauty Solution by Mathilde Thomas

Released in 2015, Mathilde Thomas, the co-founder of the international French beauty brand Caudalie (which we will talk about later this week) shared a book full of ways to live, feel and look more radiant. It is a wonderful resource and a reminder of the many ways we can better care for our skin beyond pampering with lotions, masques and serums.

3. How to Be Parisian Wherever You Are: Love, Style & Bad Habits by Caroline De Maigret and three other French women authors

Since its original released in the states in 2014, I have reread this Parisian culture, how-to book many times. In fact, the entire fourth episode of the podcast is inspired by this book (10 Ways to Unearth Your Inner Francophile).

4. My Life in France by Julia Child

As I shared in episode #152’s Petit Plaisir, if you want to escape to France and have the tour guide of Julia Child and her vivacious energy and love for life, read this book. I only wish it were longer.

5. Lessons from Madame Chic: 20 Stylish Secrets I Learned While Living in Paris by Jennifer L. Scott

In 2012, I wrote the post Make Your Life a Formal Affair as I had read a New York Times review of Jennifer L. Scott’s book before her current publisher signed her on as one of their authors. I still have the paperback version with the simple, but sophisticated illustration on the front and upon reading it the first time, I couldn’t get enough. No wonder her publisher was intrigued.

6. French Lessons: Adventures with Knife, Fork and Corkscrew by Peter Mayle

Yet another Peter Mayle memoir to not miss. Diving into the food culture of Provence, as only Peter Mayle does, be ever-more tempted to purchase that ticket to France.

7. Bonjour Happiness by Jamie Cat Callan

Jamie Cat Callan has two additional French-Inspired books to devour if you love Bonjour Happiness which I think you no doubt will. And in even more good news, she has a new book on the way! I cannot wait. It is titled Parisian Charm School, and it will be released on January 2, 2018.

8. M.L Longworth’s Verlaque & Bonnet Mystery series set in Provence

Death at the Chateau Bremont is the first in the series of five of M.L. Longworth’s wonderful cozy mystery series. The duo who solves the mysteries set in Aix-en-Provence is a couple: Antoine Verlaque, the chief magistrate of Aix, and his love interest, law professor Marine Bonnet. Both are written intelligently and thoughtfully. Both share an equal role in bringing the murderers to justice. Truly delicious reading. Her sixth in the series will be released on April 2, 2018, The Secrets of the Bastide Blanche. You can already pre-order.

9. French Women Don’t Get Fat & French Women Don’t Get Facelifts by Mireille Guiliano

Much like Peter Mayle’s many books, I had a hard time selecting my favorite from Mireille Guiliano because I sincerely enjoyed them all. But I had to certainly include the book that started her successful foray into writing, French Women Don’t Get Fat. I then chose French Women Don’t Get Facelifts, as it is similar to her other books, but also reminds me of The French Beauty Solution. I finished this book in one day at the coast and marked it up front to back cover. It served as part of my inspiration for this post, Feed Your Body Well.

10. Peter Mayle’s Caper Mystery series:

Each novel is a cozy mystery set somewhere in France, and always do I quickly devour the tale. Peter Mayle’s new foray into cozy French mysteries is a delight for my fictional predilections. As someone who typically gravitate towards non-fiction, both Mayle and Longworth offer playful, intelligent, scrumptious food descriptions and insights into the everyday lives of French culture all the while remaining focused on capers that always finish far too soon.

Now to be fair, I have a long list of French inspired books I love and would recommend, so be sure to check out TSLL’s Francophile Finds page to view all of my favorite French books as well as cookbooks, music and travel guides.

Books
The Behavior Gap: Simple Ways to Stop Doing Dumb Things with Money by Carl Richards

Carl Richards, a financial planner who is a contributor to The New York Times and NPR, as well as an author of a couple of books is known for his napkin doodles/illustrations to visually depict his larger point. The Behavior Gap was written in 2012, but it is still a book worth noting and reading. Rather than blame the economy, he suggests it is the acknowledgment and correction of our own behaviors with money that can solve many of our woes financially. Take a look at a few of his columns here to get an idea of his approach, and perhaps this book may be something you’ll want to dive into.

—The Little Book of Life Hacks: How to Make Your Life Happier, Healthier and More Beautiful by Yumi Sakugawa

A book full of illustrations by the artist and author herself, Yumi Sakugawa, discover new and worthwhile ways to shift and improve the dark circles under your eyes, the quality of your rest and sleep, improve your budget and more.

Released in May, perhaps this is just the simple dose of motivation to make small changes that will ultimately make a big difference.

Film
—Landline

Set in 1995 in New York City when yes, only landlines were our means of telephone communication, a family makes discoveries about those whom they live amongst all the while navigating the everyday ups and downs of life. After learning of their father’s affair, another infidelity is also discovered. Starring Edie Falco, Jenny Slate, John Turturro and Abby Quinn, the cast looks the part of the nineties, technology and all. Have a look at the trailer below and look for it in theaters now.

Decor
iHouse Bluetooth Dual Alarm Clock Radio

In an attempt to remove all other forms of technology from the bedroom, iHouse’s dual bluetooth alarm clock may be what you’re looking for. If you have your alarm on your phone, the music or sound machine as well, it’s hard not to keep your phone next to your bed. But what if you could connect it to this radio, set the sleep timer, place your phone in another room and fall asleep resting assured you would wake up when you needed to as well as your partner? This item makes it possible.

Spanish Olive Tray (round), two sizes

Presenting the food you have lovingly prepared on this Spanish olive tray would certainly exemplify the quality of the dish. Available in two sizes, 14″ or 17″, having this tray around could serve a multitude of purposes, and it would always look beautiful in between uses.

Shopping
Vivienne Westwood Women’s Timan’s Dress – Black

The midi dress, black, comfortable and yes, stylish. I am all over this dress for fall and winter.

Television
The Last Tycoon

F. Scott Fitzgerald. The master behind The Great Gatsby. Just before his death in 1940, he had an idea for a new novel that caught the eye of his publisher. He assured them he could finish it in four months; they said yes. He began and was on track to finish until he died of a heart attack at the age of 44. The novel he was working on was The Last Tycoon. In 2016 Amazon bought the rights to the television series that begins with Fitzgerald’s premise: set in 1936 Hollywood inside a production studio, Monroe Stahr is the young and beloved rising producer who is said to be loosely based on the famous producer Irving Thalberg. Throughout each episode (there are nine in the first season), the battle of what is best for the company and what is best for society to see is debated between the top, seasoned producer Pat Brady (played by Kelsey Grammer) and Stahr (played by Matt Bomer).

It became available to view on Amazon (free to Prime Members) at the end of this past July, and after having watched eight of the nine episodes, I can say it is worth your time. Critics are giving it high marks and looking forward to the second season. A funny story, HBO passed on the script and chose Vinyl instead. And well, Vinyl is no more. Amazon found a gem. Have a look at the trailer below.

~recipe for Pistachio Tartelettes~

While the heat has been surging here on the west coast, I have been keeping busy in the office prepping for next week’s upcoming annual French Week here on TSLL. Kicking off on Sunday, August 6th, you can look forward to at least two posts each day, all French-inspired. Last year was the first time the week took place, and readers said they wanted it to return. The good news is, it is back and with so much more to enjoy. I do hope you’ll stop by and tune in (we have THREE interviews, THREE new episodes of the podcast).

In the meantime, I do hope August has begun on the right foot (nothing against the left foot, merely figuratively speaking), and you are savoring the leisurely days of summer, as well making sure these last few weeks are sweet and restorative before we dive back into September. Below are a few articles you might enjoy perusing this weekend, and until Sunday, bonne journée!
