the more artist friends i make the more i realize that no artist really truly knows what they’re doing, and if you see them do something cool in their art it’s probably the result of screaming and crying at said piece for no less than an hour.

“I am up too late again, reading about Frida...

“I am up too late again, reading about Frida Kahlo, reading from her diary. There is this line in it that I keep returning to and mouthing silently… It is only half a sentence, a scribble out of context:
The one who gives birth to herself.
[Frida] could not give birth to any life, much less the world, but she could at least rise out of the mist by herself, flinging her image over and over and over out of the abyss before she returned to it. I see her self-portraits as ecstatic nativities: fertile, bloody, dangerous. I am overwhelmed by them…
Like everyone else, I own the copyright to my face. I am the one who gives birth to her self(ie).“

The canopies of these trees don’t ever touch each...

The canopies of these trees don’t ever touch each other, it’s a natural phenomenon called “crown shyness”. What causes this is not fully understood. One theory suggests that this empty space around the crown might be caused by breakage of twigs and branches from violent collision that happens during storms and high winds. Experiments show that if trees with crown shyness are artificially prevented from swaying and colliding in the wind, they gradually fill in the empty space in the canopy.
