Okay, so can we just talk about the Kanker sisters...

bloochikin:

Okay, so can we just talk about the Kanker sisters from Ed, Edd n Eddy for a second? I feel like they get easily forgotten, especially to those so-called fans of the show that seem to only be fans of one character in particular (you know the one, and I like him too, but hey) and not the show in its entirety.

They appear in maybe only half of the episodes however, they have perhaps one of the saddest back stories revealed (and when I say “revealed” I mean this is the kinda shit you gotta be paying attention to notice) out of the entire cast aside from protagonist Eddy and possibly Ed… Possibly but we’ll never know on that one.

First off, they are poor as shit. The writers make this an obvious contrast to the cul-de-sac kids and spare no expense at playing this off for laughs due to the nature of the show. And it is funny, but being real for a second, I know that I’d feel kinda bad for a girl who has to put up her hair with an extension cord or clothes pins for a school dance (May I have this Ed) or has to wash her clothes by hand in the bathtub (luck of the Ed), Or share the same small room and bed with two other siblings. There’s much more but I won’t list it all here.

Second, they have THREE different dads (Nagged to Ed) Now, this either means one of several things…

A. Their mother had all three of them with one guy and he left/and or they were divorced. They then had two other men come into their lives an walk out. However considering how different each of the sisters looks when compared to one another (freckles aside) this might not be correct.

B. Their mother keeps three different guys around and the sisters just accept that having three dads is “normal.” Now, considering they only really ever mention their mother or talk about things their mother tells them (especially about men), it’s seems likely that they don’t ever, or hardly if at all, see any of their fathers. Not to mention May and Marie’s comment at the end of ‘Nagged to Ed’ when Ed, Edd, and Eddy are running away from them, May: “Look at them run…”
Marie: “just like a real man”

C. Their mother filed a divorce with all three of their fathers, making them only half sisters or step sisters.
Considering they all have freckles and Marie’s comment in the ‘Hanky Panky Hullaballoo’ episode when May trampled over her, “now I know who got mom’s genes.” And the fact that they only have one mother, it is safe to say that if this were the case, it would more than likely be that they are half-sisters. However though, if their mother had divorced three men and kept each child, normally child support payments would be part of the deal. You’d expect that child support from three different men would certainly cover some expense like getting a better place to live than a dumpy trailer park. But it is also possible that all three men aren’t paying child support.

D. Their mother slept with three different guys and had a daughter with each at three different times. Making them each a little different in age from one another and, again, half-sisters. This would also mean that their mother tried having a relationship with three different guys and each of them ran out on the girls with no marriage or divorce. Lee being presumably the eldest of the three, would have seen all of them leave, if she was old enough to remember.

It is also obvious that their mother dislikes/distrusts men. In the episode ‘Don’t rain on my Ed,’ Lee sates, “Mom was wrong, men DO amount to a pile of dirt” and in ‘A Twist of Ed’ Lee says, “Mom was right, throw a man a bone and he’ll mess up the carpet.”
Well, if each of their fathers left them then it stands within reason why their mother would distrust/dislike men.

Also, it appears that their mother cares about them quite a lot to give them the only bedroom in the trailer and give them advice/warn them about the dangers of men as she sees it. Not to mention how excited the three of them seem to be to get home and eat their mothers meatloaf she makes for them on Mondays (Mission Ed-possible)

Now I know what’s going through your head if you’ve read this far, Im thinking about this way too much. But really am I? The writers wrote what they did with every intention. They knew what they were doing. It’s no wonder the Kanker sisters act the way they do, never having had a stable father figure in their life, watching their fathers walk out on them. Their mother obviously has no respect for men in the things she tells them so why should they? Yet they seemingly yearn for the male company in their lives that they have thus far lacked.

I just had to put that out there. Honestly, it’s refreshing to come back to a show you watched as a kid and see that there was more there than you originally thought. Not to mention, growing up kind of on the poor end of things, it’s nice to see kids in animation who don’t live in a nice house and have everything they need and sometimes just have to make do.

Say what you want, but I think the Kanker sisters are some pretty sad and wicked characters—and you can take that any way you like.

This.
