Today’s black history month profile is about Ron Husband, artist and animator for Disney Animation Studios. Ron has been working for Disney since 1975, making his career over thirty years long with the studio.
Ron was born in 1950, in Los Angeles, California. LA is one of the major centers of work for animators and crew members in the industry. In the seventies, he was hired by disney studios. He started out on as a trainee, then moving on to clean-ups and in-betweens. Since then, he’s worked on several major films for the company. His primary work is in character animation, but he also has done supervision and key animation.
Ron retired from Disney in September 2013, having been with them for almost forty years total. He’s known as one of the major black animators for the company, alongside names like Floyd Norman before him. He’s also worked in the publishing for Disney Consumer Products.
He’s worked on many, many major films for Disney in various ways, and was an animator for many characters during the Disney renaissance, a major period for the company. Some of the bigger films he’s had a hand in include The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Hercules, Aladdin, Treasure Planet, and The Lion King. He’s animated many beloved characters, including: Gaston (Beauty and the Beast), John Silver (Treasure Planet), Jafar (Aladdin), Pumbaa (Lion King), and the Cyclops (Hercules).
He also did work on the animated cat character seen in Paula Abdul’s video Opposites Attract.
However, his retirement from Disney does not mean the end of his career. Right after his retirement announcement, word got out that Ron was working on a new film with his son Jai Husband, who also works in animation. Jai, who works in Atlanta, announced that pre-production had started a little over a year ago.
Ron also has a a book about drawing, entitled Quick Sketching with Ron Husband. It’s a technique book about strategies for illustration and sketching. It’s a very good guide for things like gesture and form.
