1984 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

The photos here ran with A.J. Baime's piece, "A Muscle Car So Sweet, It Couldn't Stay Stolen"  in the WSJ, on Garrett Reed’s 1984 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS which was stolen at its first car show. Driver and car had a surprise reunion. Never thought of Monte Carlo as a muscle car, but if you stuff in a  new Chevrolet LS crate 6.2-liter V-8 engine, righteous muscle is what you get.
See our post on a 1970 Chevrolet Monte Carlo. And another, featuring a William Eggleston photograph of a 1974 Monte Carlo.

Old Orchard Beach

Tristan Spinski photo for The New York Times

Old Orchard Beach, Maine. Was always a vacation Mecca for Québec. Kinda honytonk. Kinda like Blackpool in the UK. There's even a pier. The Québec construction trades traditionally shut down for the last two weeks of July, and a significant portion of people still head for Old Orchard, la. It is also close by the mill town of Biddeford, Maine which was a big Franco town from 1860s-1960s when the textile mills were in full gear. There was a lot of French spoken on the beach at Old Orchard. And before it was Québéc-sur-la-mer, it was an Irish-American destination: Joe Kennedy met Rose Fitzgerald at Old Orchard, hostie. See our posts on Biddeford:

1967 Triumph TR4 A

Derek Van Bever caught the car in Blue Hill, Maine. I'll take one in any color as long as it's British Racing Green. This was one of the more dependable (sort of) British cars of the era. I think that was a tractor engine. Rugged. Probably "period" driving. C'est fun.

1961 Chevrolet Bel Air bubbletop

Nothing says 'sleek' like a '61. See our post on that annus mirabilis automobilia. The Bel Air is outfitted as a sleeper of the era. Minimalism, going fast. On the block at Hemmings.

1968 Dodge A100 3-speed

Porsches seem to predominate at BaT these days, but we liked this little 3-speed van on the block today

1970 Chevrolet El Camino SS

Henry Behrens caught the Camino in Blue Hill, Maine. Maybe our favorite El Camino is the cat's eye '59.
