2020-2021 Rainbow Awards Honorable Mention: Lucky 8 (Lucky Breaks #2)

Lucky 8 (Lucky Breaks #2) by Rae D. Magdon

This dystopian novel came out of left field for me. It is a totally dazzling ride the diverse and colorful group of Lucky 8 mercenaries takes the reader on. Action abounds but there are emotional moments too, (hot) sex is part of the story and underlines the story – the mix is well done. The transition from the first instalment of the series to the second is seamless and takes a new reader on board without information dumps. The same is true for incorporating the cyber and real reality of the future in the 2060s on earth. The author has a knack for world building and living it through their characters. The characters are not only believable but engaging – each of the 8 mainish characters are lovingly and fully developed. The plot left me breathless up to the very last page and then some. Recommended read.

2020-2021 Rainbow Awards Honorable Mention: Never Too Late for Heroes (The Superheroines Collection)

Never Too Late for Heroes (The Superheroines Collection) by A.L. Brooks

My first impression which held throughout the book: The writing, the characters, everything sparkles. A.L. Brooks obviously had a ball writing this book and it totally shows. This is one smooth and most enjoyable ride with heroes aged from their twenties to their sixties. And best of all: Of course there is a lot of action, but there are tender, thoughtful moments enough to make this a top-notch read. And the cherry on the cake? There is a female, queer, PoC, …. Oh wait, that would be a spoiler. So read. This. Book.

I enjoyed this story very much. A smartly written story about finding out who you are by having others believe in you.

A nicely written space story that had it all: overcoming adversity with ingenuity, embracing who they are without question, trust, romance, and love.

2020-2021 Rainbow Awards Honorable Mention: The Love Factor

The Love Factor by Quinn Ivins

This was a great read. Throwback to the 90’s with a little history thrown in. Love a book where I can learn something new. Loved the interplay between the MC’s. Kind of a slow burn but so relevant to the storyline.

Coaching the Nerd (Nerds vs Jocks) by Tara Lain

This was a lovely read. Mostly a believable scenario. The writing was clean and tight. The story progressed and there were indications of time passing without missing chunks or drawing out minute details.

2020-2021 Rainbow Awards Honorable Mention: Face the Wind (Little Sister Island Series #2)

Face the Wind (Little Sister Island Series #2) by Caren J. Werlinger

The plot is quite obvious, but the story is more about how the story unfolds and how people deal with the mysteries and surprising turns The setting is wonderful: Native American, Gaelic Irish mixed with some magic. A great read. The main character is heterosexual, but another, lesbian couple is in the spotlight.

Canopy (A Vivian Chastain Novel #1) by Liz Faraim

The novel of new author Faraim starts deceptively simple and laconic. The thriller gets with every page more gripping. The character depiction of main character is very insightful and enriches the story. Excellent read.

Worthy of Love by Quinn Ivins

The novel was a delightful surprise. Insightful, entertaining, well written. A new take of politics – asking the question: what am I willing to sacrifice for the greater good?
