Abigail Zelda Alder's Blog

A few changes with big reprecussions

I liked Abigail Zelda Alder very much, but her time has come.

Yup, my name is John Donald Carlucci and I wrote under that pseudonym for the first several parts of this series.

It isn’t that I’m embarrassed by the material, far from it. I love Eliza Black and where her adventures are going. I have big plans for my curvy gal and others in her shared universe. I write some dark horror and crime noir, but I’ve been told constantly not to mix genres as it is confusing to the reader.

I hate lying to you.

Using a pen name means I need to keep a fake person alive and be JDC at the same time. I can’t keep up, so I’m focusing on the writing. I feel the story is more important and that’s why I’m switching everything over to JDC only.

I hope you all understand and I apologize for any confusion this has caused.

Part four will be out this Friday and more information will be available at JDC Writer or @JohnDCarlucci.

Yue Lao - God of Marriage

Picture Yue has a very interesting part to play in Eliza Black's life.

A legend is told about the old man under the moon. During the Tang Dynasty, there was a young man named Wei Gu (韋固 Wéi Gù). Once he was passing the city of Songcheng, where he saw an old man leaning on his pack reading a book in the moonlight. Being amazed at it, Wei Gu walked up and asked what he was doing. The old man answered, "I am reading a book of marriage listing for who is going to marry whom. In my pack are red cords for tying the feet of husband and wife." When Wei Gu and the old man came together to a marketplace, they saw a blind old woman carrying a three-year-old little girl in her arms. The old man said to Wei Gu," This little girl will be your wife in the future." Wei Gu thought this was too strange to believe and he ordered his servant to stab the girl with his knife.

Fourteen years later, Wang Tai, the governor of Xiangzhou, gave Wei Gu his daughter in marriage. He was having difficulty finding a suitable match of higher standing for his daughter even though she was a beautiful young woman because she had difficulty walking and had a large scar on the small of her back. When Wei Gu asked what had happened, he was told that she had been stabbed by a man in the marketplace fourteen years before.

After ten years and three children later, Wei Gu sought the old man for suitable matches for his two younger sons and daughter. The old man refused to find suitors for his children. During the later years Wei Gu sought to find a possible match for his children but by coincidence, no marriage was put to order.

What is a Penanggal - Malaysian Vampire

Picture "The Penanggalan or 'Hantu Penanggal' is a ghost of Southeast Asian folk mythology. It is a variation of the vampire myth found in the Malay Peninsula, or as Balan-balan in Sabah. It is similar to the Manananggal, a similar creature of Filipino folklore. "Penanggal" or "Penanggalan" literally means "detach" or "remove". Both terms—Manananggal and Penanggal—may carry the same meaning due to both languages being grouped or having a common root under the Austronesian language family, though the two creatures are culturally distinct in appearance and behavior.

There are similar myths of creatures with almost exactly the same features. Among ethnic groups in Indonesia, the ghost is called Leyak among the Balinese, Kuyang by the Dayak people of Kalimantan, or Palasik (or Pelesit) by the Minangkabau people. In Thailand it is called the Krasue, in Laos it is the Kasu or Phi-Kasu and in Cambodia it is the Ap.

According to the folklore of that region, the Penanggalan is a detached female head capable of flying about on its own. As it flies, the stomach and entrails dangle below it, and these organs twinkle like fireflies as the Penanggalan moves through the night.

Due to the common theme of Penanggal being the result of active use of black magic or supernatural means, a Penanggal cannot be readily classified as a classical undead being. The creature is, for all intents and purposes, a living human being during daytime (much like the Japanese Nukekubi) or at any time when it does not detach itself from its body."

"How Not to Write, Market and Sell a Supernatural Romance Novel"

John in his articles "How Not to Write, Market and Sell a Supernatural Romance Novel" says...

This made me laugh.

"What am I doing? Some day I will die. Some day every reader will die and I will have on my last conscience the fact that there are readers out there who wasted what little time they had on this awful book."

Read the rest of this thought provoking piece.

Rebecca Zanetti has this great article "Five Tips for Writing Paranormal Romances" at her site.

Number five really strikes home for me.

"Finally, don’t hold yourself back.  As writers, we often stop and think about how the next editor/reader/reviewer/our first grade teacher/our neighbor…etc.  will react to our secret little worlds.  Don’t worry about them.  Let yourself go and have some fun with creating."

vampires: the Strigori

I like mixing things up and I really dislike traditional vampires. They've been so watered down. So, there are several vampires in my series, Infernal Choices, and variations on other classic monsters.
My favorite, the Strigori, are a nice fresh taste of vampires from the old world.

Picture "There is also the option of removing the heart entirely, and in some cases, people have been known to burn the body and mix the ashes with water before consuming it. "
