INTERVIEW WITH BRACKETT HOLLISTER

Hi, Quentin Wallace here. Today I'm going to interview Brackett Hollister, the star of two Weird Western Novels with more to come. First up was THE WEREWOLF PACK, and more recently was OUTLAW VOODOO. How are you today Mr. Hollister?

OK I reckon

That's good. So what have you been up to lately?

Fightin' monster probably, but you outta know thet.

True, I suppose. So, rumor has it there's an upcoming novella that will be set in your past and feature you traveling to The Black Swamp. This will link the world of The Black Swamp to the world of Brackett Hollister, and serve as a prequel to the next Game Warden of Black Swamp novel as well. What can you tell us about that?

Rumor has it? What rumor? I think you just said all that for the first time. You're writin' it ain't ya? Why don't YOU tell us about it?

Er, moving on. (At this point Brackett got up and walked into my bedroom and began to go through my things for some reason.)

So Brackett? Brackett?

Hey, are these yer panties?

Panties? That's not panties, those are briefs!

Yeah, they are purty brief all right, there ain't much to 'em. You don't really wear these do you?

Yes, a lot of guys wear them now.

Yer kiddin? Where's yer long-johns?

I actually don't wear long-johns, I usually just stick with the briefs.

You really wear these? HAW! Thet's funny stuff.

Yeah whatever, just put em back. I don't remember you being so ornery in the stories I wrote.

Well, what do ya expect? You never let me have sex in them books!

Sex? I said ORNERY, not...nevermind. So, have you heard from Chula lately?

Not lately. That next story is a prequel and he ain't around yet.

Oh. Good point.

You's a mite tetched in the head aintcha?

What? Why do you say that?

Well, you're sittin here talking to me and I ain't even real. That makes you seem tetched to me.

I'm not...well, OK, maybe a little. Back to the interview though. So you've faced werewolves, mummies, zombies, any idea what's next?

What is it?

Ain't YOU the writer? YOU tell ME what's next, ya dang idjit.

I don't want to let the cat out of the bag yet.

Then why'd you ask me? Whut if I'd answered? Jeezus, I wonder if I could find another writer. That Lansdale feller around?

No, no, he's not! Now just answer the question. So, how are Fire and Stranger?

I think they went on vacation. I think they's in Cleveland.

Cleveland? How'd they end up there?

Probably galloped up there, they are purty fast.

But why Cleveland?

Why not? They never been there I don't think.

….

Whut's the matter son, cat got your tongue?

You know I've heard writers say their characters come to life and write themselves sometime, but I didn't realize how true that was.

Characters come to life? Is that why you always write them dirty stories and put yer name in as the main character? Hopin' some of them women in there'll come to life? HAW, they'd probably go nuts tryin to climb back into the stories!

What dirty stories? I don't know what you mean. Myself as the main character? That's just, I mean, that's..what?

Well lookee here, I think this notebook has some interestin' stories in it. It says QUENTIN'S CONQUESTS. Let's read some of it, shall we?
