not to strike bended knee
and call my words high truth
ordained by divinity
I just want you to listen
as I’ve listened to you
for years telling me true
the same story
whose foundation’s begun to fall
and I’ve come to doubt
I believe your faith, your love
I do not doubt you
I doubt the process
of the story we both
fell into;
the process and origin
of a story describing
winners & losers
of history...

she grabbed my hand
and pulled me into the deep
she didn’t care about tired soles
just knew I could catch up
and accelerate to dancing feet
we surfed atop waves of bodies
to the center of sound’s ocean
where hips shook
and fingertips kissed
the pages of the song book
this balm of poetry & melody
protects broken hearts
- this one mine,
- this one hers
until each breaks free
of old locks and guards
releasing the free,
the us who dance
with effervescence
