Taking A Breath
[image error]This post is part of the Insecure Writer’s Support Group blog hop. The first Wednesday of every month is Insecure Writer’s Support Group day. Post your thoughts on your own blog. Talk about your doubts and the fears you have conquered. Discuss your struggles and triumphs. Offer a word of encouragement for others who are struggling. The awesome co-hosts for the April 4 posting of the IWSG are Olga Godim, Chemist Ken, Renee Scattergood, and Tamara Narayan!
Spring is finally in the air! Our snow has given way to rain, which to me is much better–and also means the sunshine is coming up behind it, hopefully. I’m obsessed with decorating and I can’t wait to make my balcony all cute for spring. I will have to share some pictures when I get it done.
This month my insecurity is what it always seems to be: I don’t feel like I’m doing enough, fast enough. I have a new book coming out next week! And that’s awesome. But I’m chewing my nails about what comes after it…even though I already have the next book in the series written, I’m just working on editing it right now. But then I’m like what about after THAT? I gotta start getting the NEXT book written! The truth is I actually have THREE books fully written right now (not in the same series) in various stages of revision/editing. Surely that should be enough to calm my writer anxiety, right???
Nope. I’m still fretting over what comes next, what will I write next, how will I keep the ball rolling? I exhaust myself like this, honestly. I’ve decided with the turn of the season, I’m going to try to make a turn in how much I beat myself up and whip myself into further work when I’ve already got plenty on my plate–time to dial it back! I’m not sure what on earth I’m so anxious about, or exactly what number of finished books is supposed to be “enough,” I’m just obsessive, and I already suffer mental health-wise with anxiety, so I’m sure it all stems from that.
Spring is time to BREATHE, and I’m going to try to.
April 4 question – When your writing life is a bit cloudy or filled with rain, what do you do to dig down and keep on writing?
Honestly, when I don’t want to write but I need to write–I just have to make myself do it. It sucks at first, and I whine and balk, but once I get into it, I really get into it and then when I’m finished, I feel really good about having done it. Sometimes it’s a matter of just grumbling and pushing ahead–like most work!
Is your spring off to a good start? Did you have a good Easter?

It’s nearly April?!
It’s nearly April! I know spring must be hiding somewhere around here, hopefully it’ll come out soon. This is the first year I’m not doing the A to Z Challenge in April after three consecutive years of participating, but I honestly knew I wouldn’t have the time and resources for it. I wish everyone doing it well, and I hope you have a great time! I always enjoyed it, even if it can get a tad overwhelming.
I’m still eagerly awaiting a cover for my upcoming book–so I can show it off and tell you more about it! However, I DO know it will be released APRIL 12TH, for those wondering! I’m just bouncing up and down to get the finalized cover and info. Fortunately I’m keeping myself busy with other writing so I don’t drive myself crazy waiting. Well, AS crazy, anyway.
Everyone have a great weekend and a HAPPY EASTER!

Not so bad after all.
From time to time on this blog, in addition to sharing, teaching, pulling my hair out, and bemoaning the hardships of writing, I’m also going to talk about the things I love. Those things I HEART about writing. When you stop by and just want a little inspiration, hit up the I Heart Writing category!
What I HEART
About Writing…Finding out what you wrote isn’t so bad after all.
We all know the first draft can be unwieldy and clunky, and definitely in my case, it needs a lot of fixing up in the revision stage. However, I usually blast my way through the first draft, wincing, feeling like all of it will probably be crap when I go back and read it and I’ll have to do A LOT of work. Sometimes, I don’t even feel like I conveyed the emotion and point I wanted to get across. It’s like trying to paint a beautiful picture in your head, only you can barely draw stick figures in real life.
But then, when I do a read-through and start the process of alteration, I often find that some of what I wrote is really good! Or at least, most of it isn’t nearly as bad as I imagined. That’s always a pleasant surprise. What’s more, I find I did convey what I wanted to get across–it just didn’t feel that way at the time I was writing it, for some reason or another. The more this happens, the more I try to make myself trust the process while I’m actually writing. After all, it’s probably going to turn out better than I expect, so I should let go of the anxiety surrounding it.
That doesn’t mean I don’t have to cut, chop, and rearrange as well. I certainly don’t produce perfect manuscripts every time. Some things just don’t work, and often I can be too wordy and repetitive. Sometimes the writing makes me wince. But at least there’s the bright spots as well, and I generally seem to be on track, so I’m not too disheartened. And at least I have the editing and revision stage to make it ever better.
Today I heart…finding out I’m a better writer than I believed!

Keepers of Eternity by Devyn Quinn
Welcome to the blog Devyn Quinn! Get to know her better:
What inspired you to write this book?
A: The Eternity series was inspired when my favorite soap opera character died. I wanted to find a way to resurrect his character. Suddenly I had an idea for a whole Southern Gothic type saga.
What can we expect from you in the future?
A: Many, many books. I have recently begun writing after a 5 year hiatus to care for a dying relative, so I have a lot to catch up on.
Can you tell us a little bit about the characters?
A: The main character in the Eternity books is Morgan Saint-Evanston. On the outside he appears to be a cranky bi-polar alcoholic with nothing better do to than chase women and spend money. However, he hides a secret, as an immortal in exile. He’s also much, much more powerful than he appears to be, even though he denies it.
How did you come up with the concept and characters for the book?
A: Once Morgan appeared in my mind, he kind of wrote his own story. The one thing I like to focus on is that my characters have real world issues: mental illness, bad decision making, etc…that I believe allows reader to root for them when they are down and cheer when they overcome adversity.
Where did you come up with the names in the story?
A: I have no idea. They just show up.
What did you enjoy most about writing this book?
A: The Eternity books are blood, sweat and tears for me. Every time I walk away from the series, it pulls me back. It has been off-again, on again for almost 30 years.
Tell us about your main characters- what makes them tick?
A: Morgan is a 1200 year old Irish assassin, and direct descendant of the goddess Cerredwen. He is also a demi-god, though he skirts around the responsibilities of such and refuses to accept his full power. He doesn’t believe he was rightly chosen to carry the legacy and that is should have gone to his twin sister, Megwyn. Morgan does everything he can to dodge the knowledge that he can’t hide from the power growing inside him, and that one day he will have to face it—even though it will probably destroy him in the end.
How did you come up with the title of your first novel?
A: I actually stole the title from a song lyric from a Vertical Horizon song. After that, the theme for the rest of the books came naturally.
Who designed your book covers?
A: The model for Morgan Saint-Evnaston is actor/model Dmitry Korikov. His look was designed by VM Hawthorne, who added his crazy hair. I have to admit, she nailed the look of how I envision perfectly.
If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book?
A: No! I love it!
Did you learn anything during the writing of your recent book?
A: That every time I think there isn’t enough plot to fill the pages, I end up with too much plot and have to start another book.
If your book was made into a film, who would you like to play the lead?
A: Tom Hiddleston is Morgan Saint-Evanston
Anything specific you want to tell your readers?
A: You really need to catch up, for book 5 is coming!
How did you come up with name of this book?
A: Rise of the Beast begins Morgan’s transformation from immortal into a full fledged god. It isn’t going to be pretty, or easy.
What is your favorite part of this book and why?
A: The Djinn Yadira and her accidental release of Morgan’s true identity.
If you could spend time with a character from your book whom would it be? And what would you do during that day?
A: I’d spend the day with Yadira. Being a Djinn handing in opium dens seducing humans while meddling with the minds would be great fun!
Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination?
A: They are all imagination.
Do your characters seem to hijack the story or do you feel like you have the reigns of the story?
A: My characters always take over. My mind is their stage and they have control.
Convince us why you feel your book is a must read.
A: Because not only do you have a crazy-sauce Irish assassin and his oft-gone-wrong witchcraft, you have his vampire girlfriend, his witchy ex-wife, the cop turned Berserker, and a naked purple Djinn with a love of spanking!
Have you written any other books that are not published?
A: Yes, the second book in my Vampire Armageddon series for NAL. The contract negotiations over money fell apart, and I withdrew the book and had the contract cancelled.
If your book had a candle, what scent would it be?
A: Sandalwood and cinnamon.
What did you edit out of this book?
A: Not a damn thing!

My vulnerability, that’s kept me secluded from the world, is now the one thing that can save it.
Evie has lived most of her life as a recluse, terrified that she might hurt someone. On her twenty-first birthday she meets Derek who informs her there’s a reason behind her gifts.
As someone that had to spend her entire life avoiding human contact, learning the truth about her origins as one of the Four Horsemen was a hard pill to swallow. Especially once she realizes that her fellow Horsemen are the only people she’d ever met that can withstand her touch.
The struggle to overcome her seclusion becomes very real when Evie discovers an attraction has sprung up between herself and one of her fellow Horsemen. Nothing good can come from pursuing the allure, especially when she knows that it not only would jeopardize her team, but her heart as well.
EXCERPT:
“Break it down for us, Cam.”
“I met my informant last night,” he said, leaning between the opening of the front seats. I angled myself to face him so I could hear him better. “He claims that Axel Reese, pack alpha of Summery, was contacted by Asmodeus.”
There was a swirl of profanities, but I was clueless to why. So I asked.
“Asmodeus is one of the seven princes of hell. He’s also the prince of lust. Apparently they were rumored to have met the night the succubus attacked the fraternity party,” Cam went on to explain.
“I’m sure that was no coincidence,” Tyler muttered. “I thought the succubi broke off from Asmodeus decades ago when he started demanding that they worship him as a god.”
“They did, but with the seals being broken the demons of lust are returning to their master in hopes he can protect them from the apocalypse. They don’t even realize that he’ll use them a cannon fodder to save his ass. If Axel really did meet with Asmodeus we need to be prepared for a shift in the packs loyalty.”
“Why not just go to Asmodeus first?” Derek asked keeping his eyes forward.
“Axel would be a lot easier to handle then walking in to Phoenix.”
“Phoenix?” I asked.
“It’s a demon club,” Tyler answered. “We don’t get the warmest reception. Asmodeus owns it.”
“Stole it is more like it,” Derek chimed in. He glanced at me. Seeing the quizzical look he elaborated. “It used to be a safe haven for the powers of good. Demons attacked it as a distraction for whoever is breaking the seals. The club has been in demon hands for almost three decades after two centuries of it being in the hands of good. Only positive thing is the demons can’t put up their wards to keep us out.”
“They’ve tried,” Tyler announced.
“Yes they have,” Cam agreed. All three men chuckled and I felt like I was being left out of the joke.
“Hair of the dog?” I asked when we pulled up outside the dive bar. “I thought you were joking.”
Cam chuckled. “They’re not the most creative bunch.” His hand found the small of my back as we headed to the door. I could feel its warmth seeping though the fabric of my shirt almost like it was melting it away until his skin touched mine. I shook my head subtly clearing those thoughts. “You stay near one of us and we’ll make sure no one touches you. What skin is exposed no one should be touching anyways unless they’re looking for trouble.” The other two nodded in agreement.

A Common Theme
Many times authors don’t just write one book with the same characters and world–series, sequels, trilogies, quadrilogies and more are pretty common in a variety of genres. They’re often found in sci-fi and fantasy, and in the genre I write, romance. It’s also common in the mystery world, with multi-volume series that focus on one sleuth or detective. It’s this last example that brings me to what I want to talk about today:
The shared world series.
A “shared world” is usually written one of two major ways: either the main character or several major characters appear in every book, but the books only interconnect insofar as they take place in the same universe; or, every book has different characters but takes place in the same world with the same premise. Personally, I’m writing about this subject right now because I’m currently writing a shared world series. Mine is in the second format: every book has different characters, but they all have similar experiences in the same universe, revolving around the same premise. The first book in this series will come out this spring–I can’t wait!–but I’ve also written several more books in this series already.
Shared worlds, no matter how they’re written, have a few key components:
The books can be read in any order and still make sense–they’re not dependent on each other the way sequels and trilogies are. It’s not a single story told across multiple books.
The same characters or same premise/subjects appear in each book.
The set-up of the universe generally has to be explained in every book, to make them stand-alone.
As I write this series, I’m finding the last point to be the most challenging. Even though by this time I know everything about the world I’m writing in, and it’s been presented in every book so far, I have to explain the key components over again in each book no matter how annoying it is for me. That’s because every book could be the first book the reader picks up. The hard part is that I have to do it without repeating myself to the point a reader reading EVERY book would feel like I’m just being repetitive, and do it in a creative way that makes it non-invasive and part of the story. I’m trying to do this by adding new details to the setup every time and varying things a little. Yes, it’s a challenge–but it’s fun!
I know a lot of readers enjoy a shared world series. It’s great to write too, because you get to explore new characters and stories but with an established background already in place. Do you read books like this? Do you write them? Let me know in the comments!
