Lorna Randolph is hired for the summer at Harrison Hall in Virginia, where Revolutionary-War reenactors provide guided tours of the elegant old home. She doesn’t expect to receive a note and a kiss from the handsome young man who then vanishes into mist.

Harrison Hall itself has plans for Lorna – and for Hart Harrison, her momentary suitor and its 18th century heir. Past and present are bound by pledges of love, and modern science melds with old skills and history as Harrison Hall takes Lorna and Hart through time in a race to solve a mystery and save Hart’s life before the Midsummer Ball.

EXCERPT:

Chills crawled down her spine and stood the tiny hairs at the back of her neck on end. The last thing she expected on this June day was a visitation from beyond, and certainly not by merry dancers.

She shrank noiselessly against the wall, pinching her pebbled arms to be certain she was awake.

Could she dream she was pinching herself?

What about the strong scents? The pungency of tobacco smoke and flowery perfumes wafted around her. Were odors a part of dreams? And sounds?

Dear Lord, how was any of this possible?

Uncertain if she were dreaming or haunted, she gaped at the animated figures. Wait. There. Him.

Her attention riveted on one young man in the gathering. He’d spun by earlier. She’d swear he gazed over his shoulder in her direction, then promenaded up the hall. His expert steps returned him again to the entryway.

Unlike the other dancers, he was fully corporeal. No partially seen legs or torso. Fitted blue breeches and silk stockings encased his long muscular legs. He wore his own chestnut brown hair pulled back in a queue at his neck, free of powder, while most male heads were wigged and white. The deep blue suit tailored to his tall figure complemented his deft steps in the English country dance.

Something about him held her spellbound…the tilt of his head, arch of his brow, glimpse of his profile… She followed his every move with the fixity of an owl.

Star-Crossed Release Day

It’s here! My newest release from Evernight Publishing!

Can you learn to love?

Gentry King always knew he’d find his mate someday—all werewolves do. But when he stumbles upon her in the flash and glamour of Beverly Hills, while taking a sabbatical from his pack, he’s more than a little dismayed. A foul-mouthed, abrasive club bunny punk girl was not what he had in mind for eternity.

Starr Montgomery left her small town to follow her dreams of being an actress in Hollywood, the typical story. What isn’t typical is discovering she’s a werewolf’s mate—a stuffy, pragmatic werewolf at that. Despite a physical attraction they can’t fight, their hearts don’t seem to connect.

How can you spend forever with someone you don’t really like, even if the sex is great? Can you learn to get along? Can you learn to love? Figuring out those answers is paramount, since neither of them can escape fate.

Have You Learned Your Lesson?

[image error]This post is part of the Insecure Writer’s Support Group blog hop. The first Wednesday of every month is Insecure Writer’s Support Group day. Post your thoughts on your own blog. Talk about your doubts and the fears you have conquered. Discuss your struggles and triumphs. Offer a word of encouragement for others who are struggling. The awesome co-hosts for the July 5 posting of the IWSG will be Tamara Narayan, Pat Hatt, Patricia Lynne, Juneta Key, and Doreen McGettigan!

Yay, it’s IWSG posting day!

What are my insecurities this month? Nothing major, just the usual “oh my God why can’t I write faster and produce more, more, more?” This is compounded by the fact I have a new publication coming out very soon. Having a new release comes with a heady rush of excitement, but there’s always anxiety attached, as well. It’s a small hit of joy that you want to go on and on, but you know the only way to achieve that is to have more things published. In other words, the elation of your publication is bogged down by the fact you’re sweating because you have no idea when this will happen again–when you can make it happen again.

Gee, writers are super neurotic creatures, aren’t they? Of course I’m thrilled, I just want to be thrilled every day. Unfortunately, that’s not how the world works. And really, would the thrill be all that poignant if it happened all the time?

Probably not.

On to this month’s question:

What is one valuable lesson you’ve learned since you started writing?

Gosh, it’s hard to pick just one.

On the technical side, I’ve learned so much about the structural aspects of writing it’s mind-boggling. You always think you’re a good writer until a good editor shows you otherwise. I take these lessons with a sense of awe and gratitude, because once you know the things you didn’t know before–well, you know them forever. It’s important in determining how your writing grows and unfolds, and how much you’re going to make the next editor want to pull their hair out. I love learning about writing. I love learning how it’s done. And with each new thing I learn I’m more and more excited about the fact that I’m honing and perfecting my craft in ways I couldn’t have dreamed of when I was young and green and first starting out.

On the substance side, I think I’ve learned how to tell a story. My early works were rambling and often horribly self-indulgent, and while there’s a place for a tiny dash of self-indulgence, it can’t be the meat of the story. One must learn to tell a tale in a coherent and satisfying manner if they want to attract readers and keep them. That doesn’t mean things have to be realistic or rote, it just means you have to be able to tell a story in a pleasing framework. I’ve gotten a lot better at that. I know what to chop, what to leave out to begin with, and how to steer things in the direction I want them to go. Storytelling is an art but also a craft.

I’ve learned about the promotional and business aspects of writing too, which is a far bigger part than people care to admit. It’s art, but it’s also a business, and you have to learn to sell yourself as a product. This is important if you ever want to make money off writing. I think the funniest thing I’ve learned is that it’s not nearly as difficult as one might think. It’s a lot of networking, taking chances, learning a few new skills, and a whole lot of luck. Once you’re in the thick of it you start to recognize opportunities as they arise and it’s not as intimidating.

All the lessons I’ve learned have come from so many places: editors, publishers, other authors. It’s impossible to pick just one that I’d call THE most valuable lesson. I will say probably the best piece of advice you can cling to, among all the other adages and words of wisdom meant to comfort you, is that you should never give up. There’s going to be a million times when you feel like giving up, and you may even do it for a while, but you have to come back and try again. It’s a long, hard, strenuous climb up a mountain, but if you don’t keep plodding forward, you’ll never find the summit. It doesn’t help that your map is often incoherent and leads you into dark and spooky caves, or right off the sides of cliffs.

Don’t give up! You have a 100% chance of failure if you do, but if you stay in the game, you never know how much chance you have at success–you just have to find out!

I’m Back!

Did you miss me?

I had a lovely weekend hanging out with old friends and seeing U2 in concert. Before I dive back into talking about writing this week on the blog, wanna see some pictures?

We had GA floor tickets and ended up being within the first 500 inside the stadium, so I got some pretty impressive shots (though I moved around a bit in the crowd).

Hey, it’s Bono! Probably the best shot I got all evening.

The screen behind the stage was ever-changing to reflect the song they were singing. It was amazing!

Hey, did you know there’s other people in the band besides Bono?

Brief Hiatus

[image error]Just a heads up, I’m taking a break from the blog this week. I have a friend–whom I haven’t seen in YEARS–coming in from out of town to stay with me, and we’re going to see U2 on Saturday! I’m very excited. So, I’ll be off the blog this week, and scarce on social media, but if you need to get in contact with me for any reason, feel free to email me.

I’ll be back to regularly scheduled blogging next week. Everyone have a great week!

Give In To The Feeling by Sarah Zama

Today I’m hosting Sarah Zama and her paranormal historical romance Give In To The Feeling. Sarah is a regular visitor to my blog and we met through the Blogging from A to Z April Challenge, so I’m super excited to have her here today! Take it away, Sarah!

She calls it being true to herself. He calls it betrayal.

Chicago 1924

Two years ago, Susie arrived in America, leaving behind her little village in South China where spirits mingle in the mists of the rice fields and play at being human; where the expectations of a daughter are unimportant and ignored.

After her prospective husband dies, she is taken on by his younger associate, Simon, who gives her the carefree life of the New American Woman; the freedom to dress daringly and do things once only reserved for men–drinking, smoking and dancing with strangers. It’s an exciting life and she considers the loyalty Simon demands of her a small price to pay.

Until she meets Blood.

Blood offers Susie even more. He lets her speak her mind and listen to her heart. He gives her his loyalty and asks nothing in return. Through his eyes, Susie sees the golden cage she’s trapped in.

But Simon will never let her forget what she owes him. Even as Susie tries to deny her attraction to Blood, she understands it takes a lot more than daring looks and an attitude to be a New Woman. And while fighting off the bondage her loyalty to Simon built, she realizes that even here in Chicago, spirits can still trick you into believing they’re men.

EXCERPT:

Susie left Simon’s table and crossed the speakeasy toward the bandstand.

The club was dusky, smoky, chock full with people. She knew most of these people, at least by sight. The smoke and the soft light had become so familiar to her that they now wrapped around her like a warm protection.

She squeezed in between two men standing beside a table with cocktails in hand. One of them winked at her. She smiled back but didn’t stop. The show would start momentarily. Susie found a chair waiting for her by the bandstand and sat, watching the crowd ease off the dance floor as the band finished their number. As always, before the show, her heart beat faster. She liked that sensation. The music embracing her, taking control of her body — it lit a flame inside her every single time.

She watched her fellow dancers take their positions on a line of chairs on the other side of the dance floor, all dressed in yellow and showing off their legs and shoulders. All sporting black bobs adorned with white feathers.

Susie dropped her gaze to her hands as she fanned her fingers. Even her nails were polished red. Red like her lips and her dress. It took her a while, but she had become accustomed to her new look. She actually liked it, now. Her fingers were steady, didn’t tremble like the first time she danced right here in this club. Was it only two years ago?

She looked across the floor for Simon. He sat in the dusk of the far corner, his face lit by the golden glow of the stained-glass lamp on the table, a finger tapping his cocktail glass at the rhythm of the fading music.

He smiled at her when their gazes met. A small smile curled the corners of Susie’s mouth.

She raised her chin and straightened her back. The song died out and the murmur of customers took over.

A brush on her shoulder, and she thought a feather might have fallen from her headband. Its gentle touch breathed down her back, causing her a shiver that wasn’t unpleasant, but when she turned, she saw no stray feathers. Her gaze then raised to the entrance by its own accord.

That’s when she saw him.

A stranger.

Only people familiar to the doorman would enter, or people introduced by a customer, and she had never seen this man before. Lithe and willowy and dressed in a grey suit with a matching fedora, a grey coat draped on his shoulders. A black man with black curly hair reaching past his shoulders — and she was staring at him.

She tore her gaze away and saw his companion, taller, bigger and watchful. He wore a black suit, black fedora, black long coat and when he stopped beside his friend and leaned to speak to him, Susie saw he wore his dark hair in a long braid on his back.

So unusual.

Back in China, all men wore their hair in braids even longer than that, but she had never seen it here in Chicago. Simon didn’t wear it like that.

And this man was not Chinese.

Her gaze moved back to the black stranger in the grey suit. She couldn’t look away. Was he really a stranger? Hadn’t she seen him before?

Don’t stare, that’s so rude.

The music burst alive. Susie started and jumped up, joining the dance a second later.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

[image error]Sarah Zama was born in Isola della scala (Verona – Italy) where she still lives. She started writing at nine – blame it over her teacher’s effort to turn her students into readers – and in the 1990s she contributed steadily to magazines and independent publishers on both sides of the Atlantic.

After a pause, in early 2010s she went back to writing with a new mindset. The internet allowed her to get in touch with fellow authors around the globe, hone her writing techniques in online workshops and finally find her home in the dieselpunk community.

Since 2010 she’s been working at a trilogy set in Chicago in 1926, historically as accurate as possible but also (as all her stories are) definitely fantasy. She’s currently seeking representation for the first book in the Ghost Trilogy, Ghostly Smell Around.

In 2016, her first book comes out, Give in to the Feeling.

She’s worked for QuiEdit, publisher and bookseller in Verona, for 14 years.

She also maintains a blog, The Old Shelter, where she regularly blogs about the Roaring Twenties and anything dieselpunk.

Summer’s Here!

It’s the first day of summer here in the northern hemisphere! Summer is by far my favorite season…I don’t like the cold! Give me heat and sunshine any day. I can just turn on the air conditioner, or hit the pool!

Do you have any exciting plans for summer? So far, I’m not going on vacation or anything this year (work is kind of preventing that) but I am going to see U2 on July 1st with my friend Rebecca in an outdoor stadium. You can’t get much more summer than an outdoor concert, huh?

Have a great summer! Or, if you’re at the bottom of the world, winter!
