US Review of Books

Cherish the Past received a positive review from the US Review of Books!

At less than 150 pages, this is a quick read. Yet even within this smaller framework, Steiner conveys a positive character who recognizes the strengths she’s gained from her past. The island undoubtedly represents hope and possibilities. The author is clearly invested in this story. As the back cover bio indicates, with Steiner’s own loss of a teenage daughter, perhaps the note is suggestive of a deeper connection to Angie and her own tragic sufferings. Above all, this is an inspiring little book, with great rewards.

Judgements and opinions

Is there really a difference between a judgement and an opinion? There certainly is a difference between being rude and providing constructive criticism.

IMG_2001.JPG

No matter how hard we try to avoid it, we all judge someone or something negatively during our lifetime. It’s sad but true. Often times without enough knowledge about the background. As writers we encourage people to judge our work and provide feedback for us. Personally I use this feedback to make my next blog, novel, of post better!

When a negative review comes we get discouraged, but often if the reader was properly informed this can be avoided. Was the genre not what the reader expected? Was it the wrong target group? Is it the first book written? Are you comparing it to someone else’s work? Did the story line hit close to the readers heart? Was a negative comment made so that it would make another book look better?

IMG_1998.JPG

As an avid reader of all things written I have been in the position that I did not like the material. But I’m always honest. I have found that there is usually a reason why it was not listed among my favourites. Perhaps it’s a case of false expectations, or a story line that brings back negative memories for me. But that’s not the authors fault! It is rare for me to not be able to find something positive to say about the read, and they are not all five stars. But, there is a lot of work put in by the author and they deserve respect.

Human nature is to judge, but perhaps we need to rethink before we speak. We often have no idea the path that person has walked. We make assumptions that are not necessarily based on fact. Be kind to one another. Be the best YOU can be.

Be a cheerleader!

I’ve noticed lately there is a large group of individuals in my social media group that are amazing cheerleaders! That makes me feel great just by association!

IMG_1992.JPG

A few months ago I began writing this blog as a way to encourage and inspire others. I wanted to be part of the change, and promote being more positive. I think I’ve made a good start, and it feels good.

IMG_1989.JPG

I believe that we can all succeed, if we believe in ourselves. I also believe positive and negative feedback on our projects is part of learning how to be successful. However, I take issue when negative feedback is given in order to make yourself look better. I also believe that there is always positive feedback that can be given. We just need to look for it.

IMG_1991.JPG

I will always remember the individuals who went out of their way to provide constructive feedback on my blog, or novels. I know from others that I am the person who gave them the encouragement to keep going! That feels amazing!

I believe….in YOU, do YOU?

Unconditional love….

IMG_1979.JPG

What is love? Love by definition is an intense feeling of deep affection,

a deep romantic or sexual attachment to someone. How exactly does one define deep affection? Personally I have a theory.

True love is that gut wrenching feeling we get when we think about another person, a feeling of joy or excitement when we are near them or talking to them. But the real clincher is true love even withstands the flu, an argument or a sick child. Really, I am not kidding!

IMG_1980.JPG

The easiest way to find this love is to give what you want to receive. At some point in life we are all going to be sick, be that person who nurtures your sick friend. Be excited when you meet someone! Greet them with a smile. It’s contagious! But beware, the grouch attitude is contagious as well! You will get what you give!

IMG_1983.JPG

Is love reserved for intimate relationships? I don’t think so. The magical love a parent feels for their child, or a friend feels for another can also be true love. It’s unconditional love. Acceptance of the other person for who they are and the life they have chosen. No judgements.

IMG_1985.PNG

Take a moment to tell them how you feel, just do it. From experience I can say you just don’t know if there will be a tomorrow.

Victoria, Canada

Sandra Steiner has suffered loss in the passing of her daughter and the loss of love. Throughout her life she has sacrificed to become the strong and inspirational author that she is today.

In her new “Spring Island Trilogy”, book one “Cherish the Past” takes readers through a whirlwind of struggle, loss and sacrifice in love and relationships. When the protagonist, Angie, loses her child, her husband leaves shortly after. Angie could easily give up, but instead finds strength and hope on Spring Island where she lives her life to the fullest.

“The past makes us stronger and prepares us for the future,” Steiner said. “This book is a reminder to cherish the memories of the past.”

Steiner uses her experiences as a basis for her book, which gives hope to those who have shared similar incidents. With her positive outlook on life, she is proof that love and life can be great even after loss and sacrifice.

“I believe in focusing on the positives in life,” Steiner said. “I choose to use my life experiences as a tool to help others.”

Raising Awareness

The goal for Steiner-style is to inspire, to encourage and to help people understand that they are not alone. It is important to understand that the information I supply is my experiences, I am not an expert nor a Doctor. Please remember you have no idea what the person beside you has been through, be kind.

IMG_1351.JPG

For someone who chronically worries about everything it can cause chaos in the rest of their life. I have several diagnoses including PTSD and hypervigilance. In my case the two go hand in hand. In 2004 my daughter and I were in a motor vehicle accident, I watched helplessly as she died. Hypervigilance for me is an over active imagination that creates harmful scenarios about my surviving sons, husband and grandchildren. For example if a phone call goes unanswered, my mind jumps to them being hurt and alone. Most would just say try calling later, my mind is frantic imagining the worst possible scenarios, until I hear back.

Wikipedia defines…..

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental illness. It involves exposure to trauma involving death or the threat of death, serious injury, or sexual violence. Something is traumatic when it is very frightening, overwhelming and causes a lot of distress. Trauma is often unexpected, and many people say that they felt powerless to stop or change the outcome.

Hypervigilance is an enhanced state of sensory sensitivity accompanied by an exaggerated intensity of behaviors whose purpose is to detect threats. Hypervigilance is also accompanied by a state of increased anxiety which can cause exhaustion.

IMG_0922.JPG

It is important for me to remember how far I have come when an episode hits. I try hard to control the anxiety before it explodes but sometimes that just is impossible. When it’s out of control I call it a depressive event, in that no matter what I do I cannot bring myself out of the sadness. Yesterday was one of these days, my daughters birthday. The result was a lot of sleep, tears, migraine and a chronic pain flare. I have had people say I’m not trying hard enough to get past this when it happens, but reality is the days leading up are traumatic, and I’m just too exhausted to fight anymore. Does that make me weak, or a quitter…NO! It simply means my body and mind need recharging to be able to fight the next depressive event.

IMG_1885.JPG

I live this 365 days a year, some days are extremely difficult, others are mildly uncomfortable. It is a vicious cycle of pain, depression, anxiety, insomnia, and concern.

Today is a better day. My mind and body are exhausted, so I tread with caution. But I know that it will get better because I work hard to ensure that it does. By encouraging others, offering a tentative smile to a stranger, and listening to those that need to be heard I am able to feel that I contribute positively to this life. That makes me feel good and gives me purpose.

Celebrate the Memory

Throughout life we gather important days, and memories. I have gathered many over my life. Today is one of those for me.

IMG_0131.JPG

For sixteen years I was able to celebrate this day. If my daughter Kayla were alive still she would be 27 today. I actually had to pause as I’m writing this. Wow 27. She was an amazing strong willed, beautiful young lady and I have no doubt she would be making her dreams come true. We had sixteen amazing parties with her friends and family. On her sixteenth birthday I had a surprise party for her. The doorbell kept ringing and she was happy to see all her friends. Kayla lived a lot of life in those few years and I am grateful every day for each of those moments. Happy heavenly birthday baby angel girl!

IMG_0161.JPG

In July each year I still pause to remember my grandmothers birthday. She played an important role in my life, she was always there for me and although she’s been gone since 1995 her memory is still celebrated in my heart. Often I find myself thinking what would Gram tell me to do?

IMG_1458.JPG

In a few days we will celebrate life. It is my granddaughter Elizabeth’s first birthday. She is named for my daughter, her Auntie Kayla, in memory and is so much like her. Elizabeth started walking in July and she now says Hi in the softest little voice. She loves to FaceTime Grandma putting her beautiful little face right in the screen to see! Grandma loves you little one!

10152474881978689.jpg

I wake up each morning blessed to have my husband at my side. The last 456 days that I have known him have created so many memories that I will celebrate as long as I live. The other day I was sitting quietly in the living room listening to my husband Cory as he composed a new song on his acoustic guitar, he is so talented. The music is so soothing and speaks to me, helping to move past the sadness that sometimes takes over me. I’m excited to see his dreams of releasing a disc come true.

IMG_0591.JPG

In about a week we will celebrate my step sons independence as he moves forward in his life. He is relocating to Ontario to see what life can offer there. Although I’ve only known him a little more than a year I know this young man will land on his feet wherever he goes, and his parents will be behind him cheering. He will have new moments to celebrate in his life in the years to come. Go Jace, Go Jace!

10152065796101461.jpg

Everyday, in every way I wake up grateful for every moment and memory. I am so lucky to have so much and I know it. I realize tomorrow is not guaranteed and I choose to live each moment to the fullest and create as many memories to celebrate as I can.

Devour Me by Kailin Gow

Taryn Cummings could not believe she was accepted into the prestigious International Institute of Culinary Arts culinary institute she dreamed of studying at in beautiful Paris, France. It was a far cry from her unglamorous life back home in New York where she helped her mother run their small family-owned restaurant called Sam’s. The Institute churned out the top chefs in the world, including the wildly sexy and eccentric Master Chef, Errol King, whose celebrity personality was larger than life.

She wanted excitement in a city of romance and thrills, but arrived to find her apartment barely livable and herself in need of a suitable place to stay. A chance meeting at the Institute brings her face-to-face with her new roommate…the devilishly charming Errol King, who would be guest teaching her class this term.

The attraction is as hot as the fire they cook with, and while Errol King, the notorious bad boy chef with an attitude, can get anyone he wanted into his bed, he wanted this woman more than anything. Something about her sweet innocence and sad eyes reach into his harden heart, but is it enough for him to forget his past?

Vital Sign by J.L. Mac

My world was perfect, until it wasn’t. I fell fast and hard straight into the fiery pits of hell, my past a bittersweet torture that never went away; the sadness, eating away at my soul. My life is empty. No meaning. No hope. No vital sign.

***

Despite her general indifference to organ donation, Sadie sets out to heal by finding those who benefited from her husband’s tragic death, but instead of peace, finds only jealousy and rage.

Though Sadie hates Alexander McBride for his health, he soothes her grief in ways that are intoxicating; addictive even. Can she learn to love the man who now owns the heart that used to beat just for her? If she has any hope of overcoming her all consuming grief, he must convince her that it still does.

Searching for Moore by Julie Richman

I lost the love of my life when she disappeared without even a goodbye.

It was the 80’s – there was no internet, no Google, no cell phones.

If you wanted to disappear, you could. And she did. She crushed my soul.

A friend just told me he saw her on Facebook. And now I’m a keystroke away from asking her the question that’s haunted me for two decades. “Why did you leave me?”

Sexy entrepreneur Schooner Moore receives the birthday bombshell of a lifetime – his true love, college girlfriend Mia Silver, the girl who broke his heart when she fled without even a goodbye at the end of their freshman year, has been seen on Facebook.

Now 24 years later, Schooner discovers the truth behind what drove Mia from him as he tries to once again win her love.

Gemini by Penelope Ward

Diner waitress Allison had no idea her mundane life was about to dramatically change the day she serves a devastatingly handsome customer. After he abruptly leaves the restaurant, she can’t get him out of her head. She has no idea that he had actually come on a mission to find her.

Cedric wasn’t expecting to fall in love at first sight with the pretty waitress he’d set out to find. In fact, she was the last woman on Earth he should be having feelings for. Before revealing himself, he makes her believe their meetings are coincidental.

Cedric’s lies and secrets are finally revealed, changing both of their lives forever.

Angel After Dark by Kahlen Aymes

Gorgeous, hotshot executive, Alexander Avery, is all business and doesn’t believe in love. He bases his relationships on mutual convenience and makes no apologies for his lifestyle or his choices. When his on-the-way-out girlfriend calls into a late night radio program to whine about his treatment of her, he is angrier at the host’s advice, than the inconsequential woman’s bitch-fest.

Psychologist Angeline Hemming has little tolerance for bullshit, so when Alex calls into her show a week later to give his side of the story, she calls him out on his excuses, and um… habits.

When they finally meet, their sexual chemistry and mental connection leaves them both reeling, as they take their fight… to the mattresses!

A sizzling hot, smart, funny, & suspenseful 5 star throw-down you won’t want to miss from the USA Today bestselling author of The Remembrance Trilogy!

Belong to You by Vi Keeland

My honeymoon was almost everything I dreamed it would be; a tropical paradise, turquoise water, romantic walks on the beach, and loads and loads of mind shattering sex. The only thing missing was the groom.

After seven years of coasting through a relationship with Michael, my senses were numb. A week of passion with a stranger was just what I needed to clear my head and take back control of my life. But how do you move on when the man that was only supposed to be a fling somehow seeps into your soul and steals your heart?

Sandra Steiner, Author Interview

10152362770891461.jpg

Cherish the Past-Spring Island Trilogy Book One is Angie’s story of struggle with her marriage, her children, and it is loosely based on my life.  She loses a daughter, as I did.  Angie is a representative of most women who have gone through sacrifice and loss, she realizes that everything she is going through is what has made her who she is.  It is a book that appeals to both genders.  Anybody can have these struggles, and we all have to be able to pull ourselves through.

IMG_0459

1.  How did you come up with the idea for this novel?

The novel was created from different stories I have listened to over the years. while incorporating parts of my own life.   I was encouraged many times by those people that I was talking to to inspire others with my story.  My goal was to inspire individuals going through difficult times to keep going and perhaps give them hope.  The stories come from my heart and just flowed out onto the page.

2.  Have you always wanted to write?

I remember talking to a teacher in primary school telling her I wanted to write a book.  She just laughed and told me that people like me don’t write books.  I thought about the idea several times in my life. Right now the timing is right, at this point in my life my kids are grown, and Im currently looking for work so I have time to write.

3.  How would you describe your writing style?

My style has been called story telling.  One reader even described it like she was reading someone else’s journal or diary.  As I was writing I had a few guidelines for myself.  I kept the novel length under 150 pages so that anyone could have time to pick it up and read.  I wrote in a manner that is easily understood and appropriate for both genders as well as appropriate reading material for teens and adults.

I have a few quirks when I write.   I write better when I have my two yorkies on my lap!  I also seem to need noise, often times I have an inspirational audio book playing in the background.  My current favourite is T.D. Jakes audiobook Instinct!

4.  Tell us about the trilogy.  Where is Spring Island?

Spring Island is a fictional place that is created around my experience after my move a few years ago to Vancouver Island.  It was such an amazing experience to move to the island and become immersed in the lifestyle.  I chose to have the trilogy take place on Spring Island because the word spring speaks to renewal and hope.  I wanted the setting to be calm, and a place that is home to people from everywhere.  The island is a place of heal and the sound of the ocean is soothing providing a sense of peace.  The setting is what ties the trilogy of books together, each of the novels can be read alone or as part of the series.  Live for Today-Spring Island Trilogy Book Two was released this summer as well.

Today was the day Angie would remember for the rest of her life. It was a terrible dream, a nightmare—the overwhelming feeling that this could not actually be happening to them. That morning they had three beautiful children; that afternoon they had two.

An innocent trip to the doctors, a bit of snow on the roads, and Sarah was gone. Their angel had left them forever at sixteen. She had so much life left to live. Angie was still struggling to believe it. The police officer had to track Alex down to identify her body.

The hospital was overwhelming. Angie had broken and bruised bones that were painful, but not nearly as painful as losing her Sarah.

Anger. Complete disbelief. Uncertainty over what will come next. How would she carry on? One foot in front of the other. Smile on her face for all those around her. Quietly dying inside.
