“Ohhhh, Now I Know You!” WHO WERE U BEFORE #RRBC?

Let’s all stop, take a moment, and savor that question so that we’ll all be able to answer it HONESTLY. I know, that comes hard to some, but, let’s just try it, please.
Before RAVE REVIEWS BOOK CLUB, these were the people I “knew”:
Kathryn Chastain Treat
…along with a few others who are not members of #RRBC. Back then, in 2013, I didn’t know them as the “people” I know them to be today. At that time, they were just @KathrynCTreat @BruceABorders @MotorCityAuthor and @VoiceOfIndie. Today, they are known to me as very dear friends…no, wait, I’ll take that back, today, they ARE apart of my awesome extended family.
Why are you asking this question, Nonnie? you wonder. …

Quick Tip: Turbo-Charge Your Scrivener Searches
Scrivener is a powerful writing tool. I write about it weekly with tips and usage ideas. To read more of my posts click the Scrivener tag or category at the end of the page.
When editing, searches are very important. Scrivener uses several ways to search. I recently received a search tip from a fellow author over Facebook and I thought I’d share it here in more detail.
Use the following wild-cards to improve your searches for combinations of words: the symbol | for “or” as well as & for “and”. For instance, if I wanted to search for two words such as Scrivener and wild-card I might use this to see reveal either since both may not be present: Scrivener | wild-card. If I want to find all instances of both I would search: Scrivener & wild-card.
However, in using these you will have to make a few changes with the Scrivener search tool. The search is located in the upper right of the main software window. Click the down arrow at the spyglass icon to reveal search options. I found that in searching for words as described above, it’s best to select “Text” and “Whole Word”. The options below these are chosen depending on the the extent of your search.
Using this and similar searches can help identify words and changes that are needed in your projects. With these tips you can improve the effectiveness of you editing as well as the speed.

The Roots of My Fantasy Writing
Lots of writers have roots for their writing. Sometimes we know exactly from where our source material springs. However, other pieces from our work may not be so obvious.
Follow Blog via Email

I’ve been thinking about the various settings in my upcoming book and realized there are a number of places I’ve visited in the past that serve as the basis for these fictional locations. They seem common for fantasy but they are more specific for me and aren’t based on previous fantasy worlds, familiar though they may seem.
For instance, Auguron Forest is actually based on a place I visited in Oregon as a child where the trees were enormous, some of the largest cedars in the world exist west of the Cascade Mountains (notice #2 on this list). Eagle’s Aerie which appears early in the book is based on an actual rock formation on the coast of Oregon, though not exact in reference. It’s called Haystack Rock and you’ve probably seen it in pictures. Without giving too much away, there are settings that occur underground that remind me of caves I’ve visited.
Looking forward to the next book, there are travels in mountains based both on places I’ve been and those about which I’ve read. Another location is The Funnel where pivotal events from the main character’s life occurred. I was rather surprised a few years ago to visit a place very familiar to me and realize that it was the basis for that setting (I don’t want to give that away yet so maybe in about seven month’s time I’ll write about it).
The point is that, especially in fantasy, you may think you are influenced by other fantasy writers who have gone before you. You may think your ideas come from nowhere. You may think you have no experiences from which to draw. However, there may be more to your writing than what you think. Seemingly forgotten, or even mundane, events or trips from you life may be the real roots of scenes, settings, characters and pivotal events.
Fantasy is fantasy – it’s filled with places like almost anywhere you may have visited. What I write often references what I’ve seen but it’s not necessarily something from what I’ve read from any other author. What’s more, what a reader associates with a fantasy locale may be entirely different from what I envision – that’s personal, what someone’s read or where they’ve been. The trick is to get the reader into what I’m writing enough so that they envision story from their own experiences.

Say No to Get to Your Yes
You either will or you won’t. You’re either in or you’re out. You jump in with both feet or stand on the side wishing you could do something you really dream of doing.

Editing for Deep POV
We’ve all been there, stuck in the uncertainty between commitment and staying in a comfort-zone. But, if you are going to move toward your dream you must make a decision. You must commit or stay on the sidelines.
And I’m like everyone else. I sat around, wanting to complete a book and publish it. But I kept dithering about jumping in with both feet. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to write the book. I had all the “what ifs” floating around my mind. You can make up so many excuses not to commit that you never finish.
For me, commitment to writing wasn’t in learning more or doing more. Instead, my avoidance took the form of waffling about building an author platform. Getting a domain and starting a website symbolized commitment to publishing. The cost held me back – or so I believed.
I muddled along with writing, lamenting that I didn’t have the money to really do anything useful with my book. I had actually convinced myself I couldn’t take it to the next level so I wasn’t doing near as much as I could. I was wasting day after day not writing, not improving, not stretching for my dream.
Instead, I found it easy to let other things get in the way of progress because I thought I couldn’t get where I wanted. These were activities that were easy and pleasant – things that didn’t really matter. But I let all those “fun” things stay in the way of pursuing the dream. I had to say no to everything that I let be in the way, even wrong ideas.
But here’s the thing; deep down I wanted to move past my muddle. Of course I did, it was my dream. However, I needed to start saying no to many things to get to yes – achieving the dream. With the idea that I needed to do something, I re-examined the cost of beginning an author platform and determined that I could start a basic site with little money. So, I faced my assumption born of avoidance, said no to what I wrongly believed and forged ahead.
But what other avoidances might we writers face? Not writing is a common one. If you are not writing for days, you’re avoiding the work. Are you allowing all kinds of unnecessary activities to hijack your time? I did because I had an excuse. Find ways to say no to them and say yes to your potential. What followed for me was a more than a year of challenge and growth but it was necessary to get to where I am – good or bad, better or worse. And now it’s time to have some fun with release day!

Fantasy Authors Unplugged Featuring Emory Skwara
This is continuing feature on Archer’s Aim – Fantasy Authors Unplugged. I hope to frequently share an interview with a fantasy author. If you have authors to suggest and/or questions you’d like to see answered then leave a comment or send me an email. If you are a fantasy author and would like an interview please let me know and we’ll plan one that fits your schedule. Today I welcome Emory Skwara to Archer’s Aim to share about his recent book release.
Interview
1. What’s the title and plot of your new novel?
My novel is called Of Song and Singularity. It’s about Wrenna Sunden, a teenage girl who lives in a futuristic utopia governed by a synthetically intelligent being named Sophia. Wrenna doesn’t know hunger or fear, and like the rest of the civilians in the utopia, she lives in luxury. However, all that changes when Sophia institutes the Exodus Act, a relocation program to a newer, better utopia. But nothing is what it seems, and Wrenna’s father isn’t convinced by Sophia’s intentions. In a last ditch effort; Wrenna’s father saves her from the Eos, Sophia’s retrieval units, forcing Wrenna to choose between trusting him or Sophia. At the heart of it, it’s a family story of survival under severe and terrifying circumstances.
2. How did you decide to write a science fiction?
I’ve loved science fiction since I was a little kid. The first science fiction story I can remember is when my dad introduced me to Star Trek: The Next Generation. I think it was Star Wars, though, that truly inspired my imagination and made me love the genre. So, I’ve been writing science fiction stories since high school, but all short stories. After completely my first novel, which was a fantasy, I thought it was time to switch over to science fiction and take a crack at it.
3.What’s has been your approach to promotion with this book?
I’ve just been trying to spread the word through various social networks like Twitter, Facebook, and Wattpad, and through my website and newsletter. During my pre-order period on Amazon, I ran a successful Headtalker campaign that reached over 304% support, which was a great way to spread the word of mouth.
4.What special research did you do for your new book?
Most of my research centered on artificial intelligence, synthetic intelligence, and the idea of a singularity. There’s a lot of great information on what we know now about the technology, but also of computer scientists and futurists who predict what AI might look like in the future. Some of it is pessimistic, saying that AI will make humans essentially go obsolete. I tried to take the opposite approach and ask the question, “What if AI was the first step toward utopia for humanity, but somewhere down the line it goes wrong?” I tried to research what that might look like, but also used my imagination and creativity as well.
5.If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you like to go and why?
Tough question. I’ve always been fascinated by British History and Literature. I studied it a lot in college and would like to see a lot of landmarks there. So, probably would want to visit the United Kingdom. I could totally see myself spending months hanging out at pubs and sightseeing.
6.Let’s flip that – what fantasy world would you like to visit?
Well, I definitely wouldn’t want to visit Westeros! I think I’d like to visit Middle-Earth. Who wouldn’t? What a beautifully descriptive world Tolkien created with so many great places to visit.
7.Who did the artwork on your latest book?
Well, originally I designed two covers and had my readers vote on the one they liked the most. I used the one they liked for a little while. However, I’ve been getting requests for a paperback copy, so I decided to shake things up and hire a graphic designer online named Jesh to create both the ebook and paperback cover.
8.Describe your journey as a writer.
It started with an old laptop my friend loaned me. I was inspired to write a story and I took a crack at it. I’ve been writing ever since, taking creative writing classes, publishing poetry in my high school literary magazine, stuff like that, but it wasn’t until after college that I decided it was something I wanted to pursue as a life ambition. I remember in college I was just bursting with story ideas and imagined a lot of them while I did grunt jobs like mowing lawns or cleaning dorm rooms. I still keep thinking up tons of new ideas and can’t stop them from coming. I probably average one story idea every other day. I love language. I love art. I love the process of creating worlds, stories, and characters. So, yeah, I took all that as a sign that I was meant to be a writer. I published my first novel Numinous last year. It was chosen as a Wattpad Featured Book of 2014. I also had the privilege of attending the AWP Writers Conference in Minneapolis this spring, selling copies of my book and meeting a lot of great writers. Currently, I’ve written and published two novels and one novelette, plus several short stories. I’m currently journaling about my journey on my newsletter while I draft my third novel titled Gùltha. It’s also the sequel to Numinous and the second novel in my fantasy series A Dirge of Rood’ravil. It’s quite the journey!
Of Song and Singularity Blurb
Wrenna Sunden lives in the utopian world of Avalon, under the care and protection of Sophia, a personal, synthetically intelligent being that governs everything, creating harmony and peace. Since she was a child, Wrenna was without want, getting all her heart desired, but her lavish lifestyle is stripped away when Sophia institutes the Exodus Act, a relocation program to a new, better utopia enacted by mechanized retrieval units. Wrenna puts her trust in Sophia, but when her father isn’t convinced the Exodus Act is what Sophia says, he wants Wrenna to escape. Wrenna must choose between her father and Sophia. On one surprising day, she is thrust into a decision that will change her fate forever and send her down spiraling into a world of survival. Wrenna must come to grips with her new reality, fight to survive, and somehow find out what happened on that fateful day.

More Reviews from My Goodreads Shelf
Reviews from my Goodreads shelf appears to have become a regular feature here on Archer’s Aim. This week, I share more fantasy books along with a non-fiction. You might also notice a slight theme between a couple:

The Emerald Storm by Michael J. Sullivan
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I like a good sea adventure every now and then so this book in Sullivan’s series was a fresh approach. The author took pains to describe the details of sailing with accuracy as well as the various duties aboard ship. It draws on many of the older tales of sea-faring adventure but in a fantasy format so there are unique aspects to the tale. I enjoyed it and heartily recommend it as a good break from all the land-lubber tales.
A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K. Le Guin
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I’ve read and re-read this series a number of times over the year. Le Guin’s writing voice in this series was incredible, capturing the essence of solitude and fortitude in the face of dangers of one’s own making as well as that of the unpredictable sea. This is an excellent tale of Ged’s adventures from childhood to manhood.
Empire of Blue Water: Captain Morgan’s Great Pirate Army, the Epic Battle for the Americas, and the Catastrophe That Ended the Outlaws’ Bloody Reign by Stephan Talty
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I read this book a number of years ago but found it an interesting history of piracy. Though it’s a non-fiction, the book an almost fictive quality since pirates can jump off the page. Frequently, these true-life tales have the ring of events described in fiction, movies and television shows and for good reason – they are the basis of fiction. This book covers everything from the politics behind piracy to the daily lives of pirates. As a fantasy author, I also find this book to be good source material. Anyone reading this book will be both entertained and informed about Captain Morgan.
Elf Killers by Carol Marrs Phipps
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Elf Killers is a solid first effort by the authors as the tale of elves attempting to survive the constant threat of trolls who have a taste for them as food. The story features desperate escapes, tragic loss, cunning bad guys (trolls), intrigue and determination all with numerous twists. I kept turning the pages with interest to see what happened. The trolls were especially portrayed in a unique style that draws the reader along with the inevitable dangers that loom for the elves.
There were a number of flaws on the writing as I thought the trolls language was distracting. While the fights were sudden surprises, these scenes needed a bit more description. There was also a bit more telling than I prefer. However, I did want to continue reading regardless of the flaws so don’t fear the shortcomings. I’m very interested in reading what the authors have already published since this book.

Letting Go of Social Media
PHS:
I must admit, I’ve backed off my social media of late to have more strategic engagement there. Otherwise it consumes time/energy for writing. Nice post!
Originally posted on Lemon Shark:
Let go of social media?! Yes, I know. We can’t do that. We’re not allowed. As writers, we must be on all the social sites to build our platform and brand ourselves and whatnot. But I’m letting go. Does that mean I’ll have less success? Maybe. Maybe not. Probably. I’ll miss out on opportunities if nothing else.
I read this post by Lisa Reiter and it resonated with me. She talks about being busy and organizing her writing. Pfft. Who needs that? With two young kids, a husband, a house, a job, appointments, meetings, blah, blah, blah, I have all the time in the world to sit down (uninterrupted) and write.
As the saying goes, “If you do one thing, it’ll be your best. If you do two things, they’ll each have a bit of your intent to do your best but they won’t be your best. If you do…

The Bow of Destiny Release News
Release day is just a week away and I’m really getting excited. A number of people have kindly offered to help spread the word over their own blogs. I’m deeply grateful for the kindness of my fellow authors and hope all the best for them. If you would like to read a sample of The Bow of Destiny, please visit the Goodreads page where you can also add it to your shelf to receive the release notice. Additionally, heres the book trailer:
I’ve got a number of upcoming posts here and elsewhere that shine a light on The Bow of Destiny. I’ll share about various characters and places in the book over the next few weeks. There are some locales that I’ve realized I drew upon without really thinking about them when I originally wrote the book. These are mainly places I visited when I was a child. It’s interesting where my ideas actually came from when a few might seem rather similar to other fantasy settings. But then I’ve noted over the years that more than a few fantasy authors set their own worlds in places similar to those they had visited or which they called home. I look forward to sharing some of these during the coming weeks and then some of them when the next book, An Arrow Against the Wind, comes out around next April.
Here are a few highlights around the release:
My Head Talker is still ongoing and even though the goal has been exceeded anyone can still support it with a few clicks to share in the social media blast on 9/28 to get the word out.
Today, Daniel Adorno is kindly hosting me on his site in a blog interview about the book release.
Last Wednesday, I recorded a podcast with Shawn Griffith and that’s available on YouTube with a summary blog on his site.
On Friday, I’ll make another blog appearance on Timothy Bateson’s site with a bit of information about the release.
Tony Riches is spotlighting the book on his site 9/24.
Check my News page for more schedule information.
Now onto some fun stuff. As I’ve hinted at once or twice before now, I’m giving away some prizes on release day as part of the block party. To be eligible to win you need to live in the U. S. & make a comment on the main release page on 9/28. Rave Reviews Book Club will gather all the eligible names and choose winners. The prizes will be posted that day but I’ll share them now just to whet your appetite.
1 Kindle Fire HD 6, 6″ HD Display, Wi-Fi, 8 GB
3 additional winners will each receive one $25 Amazon Gift Card (either physical or e-card – your choice)
So that’s all for today. Please check the schedule and visit today’s stop with Daniel Adorno and all the other gracious blog hosts on the scheduled days!
