A Writer’s Guide to Spring Cleaning

Spring is finally in the air and warm weather is just around the corner! It’s the season of renewal, fresh starts, and, of course, spring cleaning. We’re packing away our coats and sweaters and clearing out space for a new season. But this tradition isn’t just for closets and kitchen cabinets. Writers, too, can benefit from a good decluttering session. If you’re anything like me, your files, your workspace, and even your thoughts are long overdue for a refresh. Here are a few ways to breathe new life into your writing routine. Organize Your Digital Files Let’s get the tedious stuff out of the way first! If you’re like most writers, your desktop and cloud storage is probably overflowing with drafts, notes, and abandoned projects. A cluttered digital space can slow you down and stifle creativity. Take some time to sort and label your files with clear, consistent naming conventions so they’re easy to find. Categorize each file by project, date, or stage of completion to save time later. Move completed or paused projects to a dedicated “archive” folder to keep your workspace uncluttered. This way, you can access them when you need to, while also maintaining a tidy, focused work environment. If something isn’t serving a purpose, let it go. Deleting redundant or irrelevant notes and documents can free up mental and digital space. Lastly, don’t forget to back up your most important files. Use cloud storage, an external hard drive, or both to protect your work from technical issues. There’s nothing worse than losing an important document! Create a Workspace You Love In my opinion, the most motivating tool is a beautiful, homey workspace that sparks joy and peace. Start by clearing out unnecessary papers, trash, coffee mugs, and random knickknacks that you no longer want. Keep only the essentials and items that make you happy. Next, beautify! Surround yourself with inspiration: a vision board, some art and photos, a favorite quote, a new plant, or some fresh flowers. Then, make some small changes. A subtle shift in your setup—like moving your desk near a window for natural light or adding a cozy chair for reading—can make a surprising difference in your mindset and productivity. Lastly, take stock of your writing tools. Recycle old items and get some fresh notebooks and new pens. With a beautiful, fully stocked space, you’ll never want to leave your desk! Set Fresh Writing Goals Now that you’ve curated a peaceful, decluttered writing environment, it’s time to look inward and think about what you want to accomplish in the next few months. You may have set some writing goals at the beginning of the year, so now is the perfect time to revisit those goals, examine your progress, and set some fresh ones. Whether it’s finishing a novel, submitting work for editing, or improving a specific writing skill, define your objectives clearly. Break your big goals into smaller, manageable steps—for example, instead of aiming to “write your book,” set a goal to write 500 words a day. You may need to adjust your expectations, but fresh goalposts can help you avoid burnout and frustration. Finding new inspiration can also help you shake out the “cobwebs” in your mind. You could experiment with a new genre, try out writing prompts, or explore different storytelling techniques to reignite your enthusiasm and sharpen your skills. Let Go of Limiting Mindsets Spring cleaning isn’t just about physical things; it’s also about mental renewal. Negative thought patterns, like perfectionism and comparison, can hinder your writing progress, so work on clearing them out. The first step? Identify the thought patterns that block your progress. If perfectionism is holding you back, practice just getting words on the page and refining your thoughts later. Remind yourself that messy first drafts are part of the process. Don’t let the fear of failure or imperfection keep you from creating.   Your journey is uniquely yours, and every writer grows at their own pace, so stop comparing yourself to others. Celebrate your progress instead of measuring yourself against someone else’s timeline. If creative burnout has set in, take a break. Read a book, go for a walk, or try a different creative activity to recharge. Stepping away for a while can renew your energy and insight. As you shake off the winter blues and embrace new beginnings, don’t forget to give your writing life a spring reboot. A renewed mindset and a fresh, clean space will pave the way for your best creative work yet.

World Book Day 2025

Attention all book lovers! A special day is coming up where we get to express our love for all things books as April 23rd is World Book Day! While this is an unofficial holiday, there is no reason we can’t celebrate and appreciate the incredible stories out there that are hidden within the hundreds of thousands of pages that have been printed. And why stop at books with a story, fictional or otherwise? World Book Day is a day to celebrate any kind of book. This unofficial holiday lands on a weekday this year, so many will have weekly obligations to fulfill, yet there is still time in the day to recognize our beautiful books and here are ten recommendations of how you can. Buy a New Book This is perhaps the number one way to celebrate World Book Day for book lovers can never have too many books. During a lunch break or after work, consider running by your nearest bookstore and buying a book you have been wanting to read or even something brand new you’ve never even heard of. For e-reader fans, do a bit of virtual shopping to see what new book you want to add to your digital library. Read a Physical Book While e-readers have made reading convenient and, at times, cheaper to grow our personal libraries, take this year’s World Book Day to appreciate reading from a physical book. Become emersed in the story as you slowly turn the pages, listening to the light scrape of paper as you do. Focus on the peace you feel just holding the book in your hands and enjoy some time with it. Read Your Favorite Book All book lovers have a story they will revisit often. Perhaps it’s the world the author has created, the characters, the plot, or the author’s attention to detail. Regardless of why, start re-reading your favorite book on World Book Day and become lost once more in the story you fell in love with. Read a Book You Haven’t Read from Your Shelf Every book lover has a never-ending TBR list. And the truth is, they are perfectly happy with that. Take World Book Day this year to choose one of the books you haven’t read, yet own on your physical book shelf or in your digital library. Lend a Book / Give a Book Rather than telling a friend, family member, or coworker about a book they should read, why not lend them a book you think they would like? Better yet, give a book as a gift to honor World Book Day by spreading the love of the written word. Go to an Indie or Used Bookstore If you’re looking to buy a book, why not do so from a local independent bookstore? You’d be surprised at the hidden gems you can find while also supporting the business owner. Another option is to visit a local used bookstore. Admiring the beauty of a well-loved book is always a pleasure to see plus one can come across some pretty exciting finds from past readers (as I personally found a hand-written note in a well-worn used book that was dated December 25, 1905).  Make a Favorite Recipe As mentioned, World Book Day is a day to celebrate any and all kinds of books. Are you a book lover who loves to cook? Take this day to cook a recipe from one of your cookbooks you haven’t had the chance to make. It can be a recipe you’ve been really wanting to try. Or to make things interesting, turn to a random page in a cookbook and make whatever is on the page for something new and exciting. Write a Story While a whole book can’t be written in a day, why not write a story of your own? It could be a short story or even the beginnings of a story you’ve had in mind that has been inspired by the many books you’ve already read. Who knows. Your story could be sitting on a bookshelf someday to be celebrated on a future World Book Day. Read in a New Environment We normally find ourselves reading in the same or similar environments such as an office, a bedroom, or a café. This World Book Day, spruce things up by going to a park on your lunch break to read. Do you have more leisure time in the day? Take a trip to the beach if it is nice out and soak up the sun while you read. Explore your local area for serene places you wouldn’t have thought to read in before. Go to the Library Has it been a while since you’ve visited a library? Take a trip to either a local library or one you’ve been meaning to visit this World Book Day. Check out a book or even just bring one with you to sit in the quiet environment and enjoy some one-on-one time with your book while being surrounded by so many others. This list is but a fraction of what you can do for there is a plethora of ways to celebrate World Book Day this year. However you decide to do so, get creative and have fun with book in hand! Six Women Writers, Six Writing Tips

March is Women’s History Month, so what better time to celebrate a few of the female voices that have shaped the literary world? These six (though there are many more) women writers challenged cultural expectations, expanded the boundaries of literature, and paved the way for future generations of writers. Each of them left behind invaluable lessons about writing, creativity, courage, and what it means to be a minority navigating the literary world. Whatever you’re working on—a novel, poetry, a memoir, or a devotional—take a moment to learn from the greats! Here are six lessons from six extraordinary women. 1. Mary Shelley: Do Something Different At just 18, Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein, a novel that would define science fiction. She blended gothic horror, philosophy, and science with revolutionary storytelling. Her lesson? You’re allowed to do something unexpected! Take risks and explore the unknown. Some of the best stories come from stepping outside the box. Shelley’s work reminds us, too, that inspiration can come from anywhere, like history, science, philosophy, and religion. Don’t be afraid to embrace curiosity and let your imagination shape your work. 2. Jane Austen: Develop Your Characters Have you ever wondered what makes Jane Austen so great? Personally, I think it’s all about her characters. Austen could capture the intricacies of human relationships and social structures without being heavy-handed. She wrote characters that feel real. They have strengths, flaws, and contradictions. Today, we can learn from her precision—how to say a lot with very little. By focusing on dialogue, mannerisms, and subtext, you can create engaging characters that pull readers into a complex world. Beyond fiction, Austen proves that writing doesn’t need to be over-the-top dramatic to be impactful. There’s power in nuance, wit, and the simple moments of everyday life.  3. Toni Morrison: Say Something Important Toni Morrison used her novels, like Beloved, Song of Solomon, and more, to explore race, history, and identity with poetic depth. For her, literature was an act of truth-telling. Her work encourages us to confront the difficult topics head-on. Every story matters, especially those that have been historically overlooked. Morrison would encourage you to fill the gaps in literature with your own voice. Write something important and do it from a place of conviction. 4. Virginia Woolf: Make Space for Creativity In A Room of One’s Own, Woolf argued that women need both literal and figurative space to create. Her writing tip? Prioritize your art, whether that’s carving out time in a busy schedule or setting up a dedicated writing space. Your creative instincts can only grow if you make room for it! Beyond physical space, Woolf wrote about the need for intellectual freedom. As a writer, try to guard your creative time, even when you have external expectations weighing on you. If you give your art the space to flourish, it will. 5. Sylvia Plath: Embrace Vulnerability Sylvia Plath’s poetry and The Bell Jar are important explorations of mental health, identity, and womanhood, and she wrote with raw honesty. Her work proves that vulnerability is one of our most powerful tools in writing. The more authentic your story, the more deeply it will resonate with a reader.  Whether through poetry, fiction, or nonfiction, embracing emotion can make your writing more meaningful.   6. Louisa May Alcott: Use Your Own Experiences Louisa May Alcott infused Little Women with her own life experiences, which created a deeply personal, yet universally relatable, story. Today, I think she’d tell you that you can find stories worth telling in your own life. You can transform even your most ordinary moments into compelling narratives. Her struggles, like poverty, war, personal sacrifice, became the heart of her novel. She reminds us that authenticity is key. Draw from your personal experiences and observe your world closely. These six writers proved that good writing often involves taking risks, telling the truth, and staying committed. Their lessons are simple but powerful: push yourself creatively and write with purpose. Source: syd.trgt ✪/Pexels

Lent for Writers

March is nearly upon us and with it comes the Christian tradition of Lent. This forty-day period (taking place from Wednesday, March 5 to Thursday, April 17 in 2025) is normally used for prayer and fasting, but many have adopted it as a way to give up something they love, such as sugar, coffee, or other consumable items that are not the best for our health. Some may even try to give up being on social media all the time or stop watching YouTube videos to be more productive. There is an advantage to this, for lack of a better word, detox as it gives the mind a chance to reset and is something that can be practiced by anyone, even writers. To those of you who are writers, why not try giving up something unique this year? Something that may, at the end of forty days, benefit your writing and how you write? We extend to you five things a writer could consider giving up this Lent season. Give up whatever you are most comfortable with and see how you feel come April 17. Give Up Self-Doubt Perhaps the biggest thing all writers experience is self-doubt. We doubt our capabilities of telling a good story. We doubt if anyone will even read our book once it’s out there. We doubt if what we are saying even matters. This Lent, stop doubting yourself and just write. Don’t even think about what others might think; think about the passion that caused you to start writing in the first place. Your idea is what you want to write about, not what someone else wants to write about. Think about how you could impact a single person’s life once your book is out there. Think about how you could bring joy to so many readers because of your story. But don’t worry about the “shoulda, coulda, woulda” yet when nothing has happened. Write with confidence and no doubt in your mind. Take a Break From What You’ve Been Writing We all need a break, especially if we are having writer’s block. If this is you, you are challenged this Lent to put the manuscript down that has you stumped (or even if you feel like you need to add/take out more) and do not even look at it for the next forty-days. I know. This sounds daunting and will be challenging since the mind of a writer never stops, but when you don’t look at your work for a while, then pick it up later and read it again, inspiration more often than not sparks, getting you out of that block or giving you clarity on what it is you need to do so you can keep writing your story. Take Out Unnecessary Material Do you have a story that may sound like it’s going on and on and on? Do you have a scene in your story that you wanted to put in, but reading it with the rest of the story just doesn’t flow all that well? Have you written a very large manuscript and want to shorten it down? This Lent, take the forty days to focus solely on trimming down your story. For this one, you can even recruit outside help through family and friends or even beta readers. They have not read your story as many times as you have and getting a fresh pair of eyes on it can help you find the parts that may just not work as well with your story and can be taken out. Give Up Self-Editing Of course you want to tell a good story, but you are also most likely thinking about your story being properly edited. Correct grammar and style in a story really help keep the reader’s attention and allows them an enjoyable error-free reading experience. There are times, however, when writers focus a bit too much on the editing when they haven’t even finished their story yet. I can guarantee that when your editor brain and your writer brain clash too early in the writing process, it will lead to writer’s block or to not writing altogether. This Lent, silence the editor part of you and just focus on writing that first draft. Don’t worry about correct grammar, don’t worry about potential inconsistencies with characters, don’t worry about run-on sentences or lengthy paragraphs. Just write. Everything can always be polished later. Give Up Procrastinating There are two kinds of writers in this world: those who can’t stop writing and those who want to write something, but have yet to put pen to paper. For those in the latter category, use this year’s Lent to finally get that story out of your head and onto paper. It doesn’t matter if you write out your ideas on pieces of scrap paper, in a notebook, on your phone or tablet, or in a Word document. It doesn’t matter if you just write an outline or jump right into writing chapter one. What matters is you begin. Once you do, it will stop feeling less scary to write, and the more you write, the more inspired you will feel to keep writing. To any writer, all of these suggestions on what to give up can sound challenging to take on, but it doesn’t have to be. Rather, think of it as an opportunity to help further strengthen yourself as a writer by focusing on one element that you may be struggling with. Best of luck on whatever you decide to give up this Lent season! Image Source

How to Write About God’s Love: 5 Tips for Christian Writers

Let’s celebrate the last day of the month of love—the time of red roses, candy hearts, and all things romance. But let’s hit pause on the chocolates and candlelit dinners for a moment and talk about a kind of love that doesn’t come in heart-shaped boxes. As Christian authors, we carry the incredible privilege (and challenge!) of sharing the greatest love story ever told: the unconditional love of God. Every message of faith is built upon God’s love, so it’s important for believers to fully experience it. Our words hold the power to bring God’s redemptive love into the hearts of others. But how can we write about God’s love—something so deeply personal—in a way that will touch our readers? Whether you’re writing fiction, nonfiction, devotionals, or poetry, these five powerful tips will help you authentically and effectively convey God’s love in your writing. 1. Experience It for Yourself Imagine that you’re looking for advice on traveling to Europe. Who would you ask? Probably someone who has been there and experienced it firsthand. In the same way, readers are more likely to resonate with a writer who has personally encountered God’s love. Your first step is to cultivate an intimate relationship with God. Spend time in Scripture, prayer, and worship. Reflect on how He has demonstrated His love in your life and how it has transformed you. When your heart has been deeply touched by God’s love, authenticity will shine through your words, making them more impactful for your readers. 2. Show, Don’t Just Tell It’s easy to tell readers, “God loves you.” But many people won’t be ready to internalize this statement without experiencing it for themselves. Rather than simply telling readers about God’s love, show them what it looks and feels like. Use storytelling to illustrate God’s love in action. If you’re writing fiction, let your characters experience grace, mercy, and redemption. In nonfiction, share personal testimonies or powerful examples that bring biblical love to life. Think of the stories that stirred your heart and drew you closer to divine love. How can you use narrative tools to offer a similar experience to your reader? 3. Point to Scripture The Bible is the ultimate source of truth about God’s love. It is filled with stories and verses that illustrate His boundless compassion, mercy, and sacrifice. When writing about God’s love, weave Scripture naturally into your message. Here are a few verses that highlight the magnitude of divine love: Beyond simply listing verses, consider recounting Bible stories in a way that brings them to life for modern readers. When people see themselves reflected in biblical narratives, they connect with the message on a deeper level. 4. Make It Personal and Relatable Readers resonate with honesty and vulnerability. Don’t be afraid to be real about your own faith journey. Share the struggles and breakthroughs that shaped your faith. How has God’s love sustained you through hardships? How has it transformed your outlook on life? Your transparency will encourage readers to reflect on their own experiences and open their hearts to God’s love. 5. Focus on Transformation God’s love is not just a comforting emotion; it is life-changing. It convicts, heals, restores, and empowers. Emphasize the transformative power of divine love in your writing. Show how encountering God’s love leads to growth, redemption, and a renewed purpose. Whether you’re crafting a novel, devotional, or personal essay, focus on how God’s love moves people from brokenness to wholeness. Final Thoughts Writing about God’s love is a spiritual endeavor, so don’t go it alone. Invite the Holy Spirit to guide you. Pray that God will shape your words to touch the hearts that need them most. Ask Him to help your writing reflect His truth and love in a way that draws people closer to Him. And most importantly, write with love. When your heart is filled with God’s love for others, it will shine through in every word. Let’s Keep the Conversation Going! How do you incorporate God’s love into your writing? Share your thoughts and experiences in the comments below—we’d love to hear from you! Image Source: Kristina Paukshtite/Pexels

Romance Tropes in Fantasy: 5 Popular Love Stories in Fantasy Books

A professor in a college creative writing course once told his class that every story is a love story. At first, this may seem like an overstatement, but when you step back and analyze storytelling, it rings true. Love exists in every story—whether it’s love for another person, a country, God, or even an idea. This means that no matter what fantasy story you’re writing, romance in fantasy will likely find its way into your narrative. While those seeking an overt love story may turn to the romance genre, romance is not exclusive to it. Many fantasy books incorporate romance tropes to enhance storytelling and character relationships. If you’re looking to weave romance into fantasy, here are five popular fantasy romance tropes along with examples and ideas for your own writing. Popular Fantasy Romance Tropes Human Falls in Love with a Creature / Creature Falls in Love with Another Creature One of the most recognizable fantasy romance tropes is the love story between a human and a non-human creature. A classic example is Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve’s Beauty and the Beast, where a human woman falls in love with a cursed man turned beast. Similarly, Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid follows a mermaid who falls for a human prince, and Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight features a romance between a human girl and a vampire. This trope isn’t limited to human-creature pairings. You could also write about two magical beings from different species. Helene Wecker’s The Golem and the Jinni explores a slow-burning romance between a golem and a jinni, both supernatural beings from different worlds. With the vast array of fantasy creatures, the possibilities for creative romance are endless. True Love Breaks a Curse A staple in fantasy romance books, this trope often involves a character who is cursed and can only be saved by love. Beauty and the Beast fits here as well, but another example is Hans Christian Andersen’s The Snow Queen, where a girl’s love saves her childhood friend from an icy enchantment. Consider crafting a fantasy romance subplot where a character suffers from lycanthropy (turning into an animal) or another magical affliction, and only their true love can break the spell. Werewolves are a classic choice, but you could also explore shapeshifters from different mythologies, such as Norse berserkers (who transform into bears) or African leopard men. Falling in Love While on a Quest When characters embark on a journey together, a slow-burn romance can naturally unfold. A classic example is Frodo and Sam’s unwavering devotion in The Lord of the Rings (though not explicitly romantic). Imagine a questing party consisting of a reckless swordsman, a powerful sorcerer, a gentle white mage, an elven archer, and a dwarven skirmisher. The white mage constantly heals the swordsman, and over time, their bond deepens. Or perhaps a love triangle develops between the mage, the swordsman, and the sorcerer, adding layers of tension and intrigue. This trope allows for romantic subplots to develop gradually as characters face trials, rely on each other, and reveal their vulnerabilities. Magic Binds Two People Together Magic in fantasy romance stories can bring lovers together—sometimes against their will. Andrzej Sapkowski’s The Witcher series explores this with Geralt and Yennefer, whose destinies become entwined due to a magical wish. While this binds them together, it also creates conflict, as they struggle with the question of whether their love is genuine or merely fate. For your story, consider a magical contract, a soul bond, or a curse that forces two people to stay close. This trope offers a mix of romance and tension, leading to rich character development as the couple navigates their unexpected connection. Two Characters Unable to Be Together (Star-Crossed Lovers) A Romeo and Juliet-style trope, this features lovers kept apart by external forces. In J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, Aragorn and Arwen’s love is threatened by their different lifespans—Arwen, an elf, must choose between immortality and a mortal life with Aragorn. Another example could be two lovers from rival kingdoms: a prince from a fire-wielding nation and a princess from a water-controlling dynasty. Despite their love, political tensions keep them apart.
