Influences, Categories, and Pushing Boundaries
I'm in the middle of developing
The Vampire's Favorite
, which is officially on my schedule to write beginning February 1st. Last night, after completing one scene of another story and two scenes from a third (those last two written under my other pen name), I went to bed, and for some odd reason, my mind was drawn to TVF. A couple of days ago, I jotted down a few opening lines for Chapter 1. Once I was in bed, though, it hit me that I was starting the story all wrong. An entire prologue spooled out in my head, so I hopped out of bed, grabbed my laptop, and two hours later, had a really great scene written.
Only problem? It pushes a few boundaries most people aren't comfortable being that close to. My alpha reader-slash-final editor (AR/FE) said that he got distracted counting the number of felonies committed in the Prologue alone, so much so that he couldn't concentrate on the story. (He's a lawyer by day, so maybe that explains it.) I shot back my usual response: I follow the story. That scene, the one outlined in the Prologue, was a pivotal moment in Jason's life. If he'd chosen another action, his life would've taken a radically different path, maybe one far worse than the one he committed to that day. He'd probably have stayed in Minnesota and never would've met Gianna and Eric, and the story told in The Vampire's Pet would never have turned out the way it did.
My AR/FE is often disturbed by the stories I write under this pen name, perhaps because he's not a regular reader of erotic dark fantasy. He and I have often discussed how the stories set in the world of the Vampyr aren't really paranormal romances (which is how I have most of them categorized on Amazon), even though they contain strong romantic elements. And they're not really dark fantasy; there's just not enough horror in them (though there probably will be in TVF). They're not exactly erotica either; the sex is a by-product of the story, not the other way around, as per usual in erotica.
I've been struggling for months as to where these stories should be placed and how they should be categorized. I'm sure I've discussed that before somewhere. It worries me precisely because I know some readers of paranormal romance will be completely turned away from the stories by the explicit, rough sex, some of which skirts quite a few boundaries in its own right. I worry because I want readers who will click with the stories to find them, and while that's slowly happening, I always feel as if I simply don't have them placed where they need to be in order to attract those readers.
Are these stories disturbing? Oh, yeah, and they do test a few boundaries, though no more than anything else that's ever been published. Growing up, I read widely, but much of my reading material was chosen because it was readily at hand. So, I read a lot of what my parents were reading, Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Louis L'amour, Zane Grey, V.C. Andrews, and a handful of "women's fiction" (Danielle Steel and the like) that my mother kept on hand; also Little House on the Prairie, Anne of Green Gables, Charlotte's Web, and so on. At my maternal grandmother's, I read everything from Plato to Biblical commentary to classic literature (what college students in the 1930s would've read), and at my paternal grandmother's, I read Ellery Queen, Edgar Rice Burroughs and all those old pulp SciFi writers, Pearl S. Buck, and goodness only knows what else. From my school and public libraries, I plucked Alfred Hitchcock anthologies, Anne McCaffrey, Andre Norton, Heinlein, Hubbard, A Wrinkle in Time, C.S. Lewis...
Let's just say, I read a lot, pretty much every moment I was awake. I wasn't a picky reader back then. Remember those ChildCraft Encyclopedias? We had a set. I read them all, cover to cover. (Yes, I know. That's kinda sad.) I spent my childhood reading and loved every moment I was immersed in a book, even the ones that scared the bejesus out of me, maybe especially those.
And maybe that's why I feel so comfortable writing the stories I do. I grew up believing that there was no taboo the mind couldn't explore, that one's imagination should have few, if any, limits. Hey, I read Andrews' Flowers in the Attic and Heinlein's Friday before my 13th birthday, and those were mild by comparison to some of the things I've read, before, during, and since. What happens within Vampyr society isn't that big of an eye-blinker when placed side-by-side with my pre-teen and teenage reading material.
This afternoon, I moved The Vampire's Pet into erotica on Amazon. It's well in line with other dark erotica novels, like Joey W. Hill's Vampire Queen Series, some of J.R. Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood books, and so on, the big difference being the emphasis the Vampyr stories have on multiple partner sex. We'll see how TVP does in erotica. In the meantime, I'm going to continue writing TVF based on the Prologue as it is now. Hopefully, my regular readers, at least, will understand why it's there.

Poll!
With the last two regular books in the Vampyr Series planned for release this year, it's time to think about what projects I'll take on once the series is completed. To that end, I've put up a poll on the main page to see what kinds of supernatural and paranormal creatures enjoy reading about. So far, less than half a dozen people have responded, but the running favorite is werewolves.
The Vampire's Favorite is right now in the development stage. I hope to begin writing it near the beginning of next month. Once I have news on cover(s), release dates, etc., I'll update progress here. Thank you for your patience as I make this adjustment to my writing schedule, and a huge, huge thank you for your continued support and encouragement.

News
A reader pointed out that some might find it confusing to review
The Vampire's Pet
's individual episodes unless they've read them recently. I've changed the Advance Review Team guidelines so that those who have read all of the individual episodes may leave their initial review on the bundle at Amazon.com, if they so desire.
You will be asked to mirror that review on GoodReads (if you're a member) and Barnes & Noble. Why? Because eventually, these stories will no longer be exclusive to Amazon, as they are now. Readers who prefer to purchase their books through other retail stores will dearly appreciate having your feedback on the story prior to making a decision on whether or not to purchase these books. Trust me. I'm a reader, too, and yes, I absolutely do read reviews prior to making that same purchasing decision for other books.
There are a couple of other clarifications on the ART page, such as how long ART members will have to read and review stories. My goal here is to streamline the process on both ends (yours and mine). If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.
In other news,
Unfurled Shadows
debuted on a sub-sub-category of Amazon's Hot New Releases list last night at no. 60. As of about five p.m. EST today, it was sitting at no. 53. The category is: Kindle > Romance > Paranormal > Vampires (under Hot New Releases, not Bestsellers). Yes, it's a really small sub-category, but still; this is my first time having a book debut on one of those lists. A huge, huge thank you to everyone for getting Unfurled Shadows there.
One final thing: Please leave a review on Unfurled Shadows on Amazon.com and GoodReads (if you're a member). Reviews are incredibly important, not only to readers (who use them to judge the quality of a story and whether or not they'll enjoy it), but also to authors. Did you know that some advertising sites refuse to open spots for books that don't have a certain number of reviews? That means an author's reach is limited to readers subscribing to smaller advertising venues and those who happen to discover their books by chance, as many of y'all have. The more limited the reach, the harder it is for authors to produce new stories, which can be expensive depending on how much of the production (editing, formatting, covers) an author can do on his or her own. Please leave a review, even if you don't want to join my Advance Review Team. You will have my eternal gratitude, and that of readers as well.
Peace and happy reading!

Now Available: The New Vampire, Episode 5
At last, the fifth and final episode of The New Vampire Series is available for purchase or borrow via Amazon. (See the book's page for non-US Amazon purchase links.) This one is longer than the previous episodes, though not as long as I thought it would be. (Which just goes to show what I know!) Here's the description:
Scant weeks after leaving the cage and only days after being reunited with Willow, Gianna Logan and her husbands, Eric Logan and Jason Bellmont, face numerous obstacles in their attempt to locate and reclaim their daughter. The players slowly assume their roles, the betrayers and the betrayed, and the hounds of war nip sharply at their heels. To rejoin with her daughter and survive the coming days, Gianna must find her strength or lose herself forever to the shadows clinging to her mind.
Keep an eye out for future releases, including The Vampire's Favorite and The Master Vampire , which I hope to release later this year. Don't forget to sign up to receive Advance Reading Copies of 2015's releases!
Happy New Year, y'all!

Now Seeking Advance Reviewers for 2015 Releases
Y'all may have noticed a few changes to the website. For example, I've updated the Books page so that it's easier to navigate. At the same time, I've uploaded a teaser poster for
The Vampire's Favorite
.The big change is a page requesting sign-ups from readers who would like to join an Advance Review Team (ART) for upcoming stories. I've been trying to put this together for a while and so far have a whopping three people on my list.
All the guidelines and rules are here, but the short of it is this: In exchange for an Advance Reading Copy (ARC), ART members agree to post honest reviews on Amazon (Amazon.com and your local Amazon, if you live outside the US), GoodReads (if you're a member), and Barnes & Noble (when applicable). First priority is given to those who have already left reviews, and yes, you must leave at least one review prior to applying, for reasons outlined on the ART page.
The biggest reason, though, is that it's completely pointless to pass out review copies if no one actually bothers to review the book. I hate to be harsh here, but if all you're looking for is a free story, there are plenty available on Amazon right now that I'd be happy to recommend to you. (No, I'm serious. I'll really give you a recommendation to some good books. I'm just sweet that way.)
And now, the good stuff...
The first ARC available to the ART (ARC, ART....yes, I'm laughing, too) will be The Vampire's Favorite, which I'll begin writing sometime before the end of this month. I don't know what form it will take, I don't know how long it will be (page wise), and I don't yet have even a tentative release date. The next ARC after that will be The Master Vampire, and ditto on the I-don't-knows. Unlike previous books, which were written on the fly in between one release date and the next, I'll be writing TVF and TMV completely before I even think about setting a release date.
That said, these are stories regular readers won't want to miss. TVF is set between The Vampire's Pet and The New Vampire. In it, Jason and Eric travel to Minnesota so Jason can heal from the injuries he sustained when Gianna broke one (at the end of TVP). It's told from Jason's point of view and should be a humdinger, in the development of Eric and Jason's relationship as they struggle to deal with Gianna's condition and in other ways. The beginning of TVM overlaps the end of the final episode of TNV (out soon, I promise), so I don't want to say anything about the basic plot except what y'all already know, that it's told by Eric. Also, things get a little hinky, but that's probably not a surprise.
Have I convinced you to join yet? I hope so!
One final thing: Space on the ART is limited. Yes, I absolutely hope to attract more than the three members I already have. :) Beyond that, I'll set a limit on how many readers can be on it at any one time based on the interest. Those who don't review (for whatever reason) will be taken off the ART to make room for those who will. So, review the guidelines here, think about it really hard, and then let me know if you're interested. I look forward to hearing from you!

Cover Reveal: The New Vampire, Episode 5, and a Tiny Peek at the Story
Here it is at last, the cover for the fifth and final episode of The New Vampire Series. The title is Unfurled Shadows. I don't have a description yet, but I do have two tiny sneak peeks. Unfurled Shadows opens with a stanza from "Ergasta Halloweye" that was recited as part of a foretelling made by Lanu in Episode 3: The Games We Play.Beauteous mem'ry, bright and bold
Hid under watchful mind, and I
Shackle unfurled shadows cold
Thy beating heart, forever mine
And here's the first paragraph:
Some sorrows can be expressed with words or actions, through thoughts and some indefinable language created between the minds of bonded vampires and their families. Others remain trapped in our hearts, forever reverberating the consequences of a single poor decision into every aspect of our lives. I should’ve learned that the night Selena stole my humanity from me, leaving the shadows behind to haunt my every breath. I should’ve known I’d never free myself from that memory or its consequences.
I hope you enjoyed this sneak peek. Stay tuned for the full episode, coming soon!

News
If you hadn't figured it out already from the lack of a post, the release of the final episode in The New Vampire Series has been delayed. I hope to have it to y'all by no later than 10 January (my time). The flu has hit our area pretty hard. Fortunately, I'm the only person in my immediate family who caught it, but it has upended my entire writing schedule. My sincere apologies to everyone. Hopefully, this will be the last delay on any book in this series as I'll be working from a completely different kind of production schedule once The New Vampire Series is complete.
In other news, Reading to Distraction posted a really nice review of The Vampire's Pet, saying, "This wasn't a book with two dimensional characters thrown in steamy situations, but rather sexual characters who are trying to juggle the changes thrown their way." R2D has reviewed other books I've written. I'm always struck by how well she "gets" my writing. Be sure to stop by and check out this awesome review site.

All Books in The New Vampire Series Are FREE Today Only! (And a Very Happy Holidays to You All)
So, a while back I was looking at what promotions I could do through the end of 2014 and I thought as a special Christmas offering to all my readers, why not make all five stories in The New Vampire Series available as free downloads during one day of the holiday season?
And yup, I really did it.
Today only, you can go to any Amazon store worldwide that honors their "free" days and download any episode in The New Vampire Series, plus the short story "We All Fall Down," absolutely free . Here are the Amazon.com links. Links to other major Amazon stores are on the episodes' pages (click the images to go there instead).
Episode 1: Shadow and LightEpisode 2: Beautiful Memory"We All Fall Down"Episode 3: The Games We PlayEpisode 4: What Once Was Lost
In other news, it's very probable that Episode 5 of this series will be delayed (it's flu season). My profuse apologies to you all. Hopefully, I can get it to you not long after the first of the year, if not sooner.
In the meantime, I hope each of you has a very safe and happy holiday season. Peace and happy reading!

Looking Ahead to 2015
I've briefly discussed some of my writing plans for 2015 elsewhere, but wanted to take a moment to give y'all a peek at what to expect in the coming year.
The next publication out will, of course, be the fifth and final installment in The New Vampire Series. The tentative release date is 29 December; however, it may be a few days after that before it's actually released. (Two words: Flu season.) I'm slowly working my way through the story as time and energy allow, and promise to have it to you as soon as possible.
My writing schedule next year has six novels on it, four under another pen name (to which I was committed long before I began writing Eric's story) and two under this one, The Vampire's Favorite and The Master Vampire . I hope to release TVF in the first half of 2015 and TMV in the second half, but I'm not putting a firm deadline on their releases until after they're completely written.
There are a couple of really good reasons for this. First, I want to give myself plenty of time to do justice to these stories. While I love the episodic format, having to release them as soon as each one is written is not a good match for my writing style. So, they'll both be written as a complete story, after which I'll decide if I want to release them as novels or in episodes, and that depends entirely on how the stories themselves can best be showcased.
The second reason I'm waiting to assign release dates is so there's no rush on my end. I'm one of those people who hates being late, so when I have to delay an expected release for whatever reason, it really bothers me. Hopefully, I can avoid that next year and y'all will then be able to count on a story being released exactly when I say it will.
For those who are new to the blog, TVF is Jason's story. Chronologically, it takes place between The Vampire's Pet and TNV. The reading order of TVF and TNV is absolutely flexible , so for those of you who are already reading through Gianna's story, you don't have to stop and wait until I release TVF before you can finish out TNV. TMV rounds out the main (planned) series and is told from Eric's point of view.
I'm hesitant to go into details about what happens in each story. There's a fine line between giving hints and giving the story away, but I feel safe sharing that there's a lot of hardship ahead for Eric, Jason, and Gianna and a lot of hope as well.
As for 2016 and beyond, I have no set plans. What I do once TMV is released depends almost entirely on whether or not readers want more. That said, I do have tentative plans for at least two additional stories set within the World of the Vampyr that I've already discussed a little. And, I may do shorter stories to fill in the long gaps between one release and the next. Keep an eye out here and drop me a line if you're interested in hearing more about a particular character.
Peace and happy reading!
