Lester and Hillary will have to contain Trumps Knockout Debate Punch

Did you hear? Trump is threatening to seat Jennifer Flowers at the debate; the women who Bill Clinton had an affair with twenty plus years ago. This is just a warm up folks. Donald Trump has only one option and one option only and that is to destroy the Clintons. And I mean Bill as much as Hillary. He will be outgunned in every other area and he knows it, but he has a grenade and the pin has already been pulled. He will roll it out and probably very quickly and stun Hillary Clinton into losing her footing. And then he will go in for the kill.

Jennifer Flowers is but a preview. The Trump arsenal of course will involve Monica Lewinsky and all the tawdry details. He will not hold back. Trumps specialty is going where none has gone before and using the shock and awe of that moment to unsettle his opponent and turn the debate into the Donald Trump show. There is only one man who can really stop Trump in his supreme moment of mutually assured destruction and that is the moderator Lester Holt.

It cannot be another Matt Lauer moment. The stakes are too high. Lester Holt will either keep control of the debate or become a casualty himself. There will be no middle ground when Donald makes his move. If he goes rogue and goes all the way down and says all those things that will be graphic and will be shocking then Lester Holt will have his supreme challenge. Either it will be a Presidential Debate or it will be the Apprentice redux and if Trump wins then two other people will lose and he can turn to Lester and Hillary and say those immortal words, You're fired!

Edith and Woodrow Wilson Were the Hillary and Bill of Their Time

Edith and Woodrow Wilson were years ahead of their time. They were a young in spirit couple who necked in the Presidential limousine,  recited poetry to each other up by the fire in the presidential residence and went on secret romantic jaunts while dating. But here is where it gets interesting. Woodrow Wilson brought Edith into everything even before they were married. She was decoding top secret ciphers and getting state papers and Woodrow used her as a sounding board on whether the United States should enter World War I. Sound like anyone you know?

The Clinton's are the original power couple of our time and Hillary was in on everything just like Edith. And there were secrets especially with Clinton's indiscretions. What is fascinating is that Woodrow Wilson was treating Edith as an equal before women could even vote. Woodrow was a power house intellectual much the way Bill Clinton is. Both men had photographic memories and prided themselves on a knowledge of  policy and history.

And then we come to the women. Edith was a tough no nonsense woman who today would be called pushy and maybe more. Hillary is much the same. Both woman had to go their own way and carve out space in a world dominated by men. And both women have a penchant for secrecy. If something did happen to Hillary then there can be doubt that the White House would circle the wagons and decide what is next. Edith and Woodrow did it a hundred years before and it has remained a well guarded secret...until now.

What do Hillary Clinton and Woodrow Wilson have in common?

Hillary Clinton is a democrat. So was Woodrow Wilson. Hillary is a progressive in every sense of the word.  So was Woodrow. Hillary had been fighting the republicans for years. Woodrow Wilson was hated by Henry Cabot Lodge and a large part of the republican party. They both tried to push through legislation that did not pass. Woodrow lost the league of nations and Hillary lost health care. They both have strong independent spouses. Edith Wilson was so strong she took over the White House and we need to say no more about President Clinton. And finally, Hillary Clinton has a thrombosis in her brain, a blood cloth. And so did Woodrow Wilson
In 1919 there were no blood thinners. There was no beta blockers. Woodrow Wilson was suffering from hardening of the arteries and for years dealt with hypertension. It became so severe he took to his bed many times until his blood pressure went down. Hillary Clinton has had several falls and the thrombosis in her brain and her leg are kept in check with blood thinners. For Woodrow Wilson all he could do was wait until the thrombosis either burst or caused a massive stroke. Hillary Clinton exercises and eats right and is monitored by the best medical science money can buy. Woodrow  Wilson had only the "rest cure" to fall back on.
When Woodrow Wilson had a massive stoke his wife Edith and the White House covered it up. The public never knew the President was bedridden. There was no medial disclosure required of a sitting president. Hillary Clinton has released more medical information than any presidential candidate in history. There was a flap when she didn't tell the world she had pneumonia as a candidate running for office.  President Woodrow Wilson would almost die in the White House and no one would know.
So there are similarities. But the vast difference in medical science from 1919 to 2016 makes what would have been deadly before a treatable condition. Woodrow Wilson hid his ailments his whole life.,,Hillary Clinton has let the world know and has moved on. That makes all the difference

Madam Presidents Trump Card

At the debateMadam President will have one shot to  throw her Trump card and she better throw it well. Foreign policy. If there is anywhere she can strike at the unprotected heel of her opponent it is here. There is no fudging here. It is the unanswered question by Matt Lauer. What do you read to prepare for the Presidency. The truth is where Hillary is a wonk her opponent is a man who prides himself on making it up as he goes. He goes with intuition and gut...two things that work well on the campaign trail.

The Trumpians do not deviate. They are with their man. But they all have children and nuclear weapons are a deadly game. It is a bit like hoping that the car you just bought on the Internet really is going to run great. You want to believe everything you read and you take delivery and then two weeks later the engine blows. And you have to admit to yourself there are no free lunches, there is no magic no matter how much you want to believe that your candidate is the one.

Hard work and experience and knowledge are the only things that count in chess of diplomatic history. You must understand your opponent or you will get played. The Russians, the Chinese are all well schooled in the mendacity of international relations. The Trump card is Madam Presidents to throw.

Madam President Can No Longer Just Hang On

When I used to wrestle I would get ahead by two points and then I would just hang on. All I had to do was keep my opponent from getting a take down or escaping. I had two points and I had two minutes to get through which on the wrestling mat is an eternity. Madam President thought all she had to do was hang on until the buzzer sounded and Trump would continue to implode and her lead would hold. Neither seems to be true now.  She needs to get more points.

And in wrestling that meant getting another take down or pinning your opponent which is essentially a knockout punch. Hillary had it made for a while and the match seemed to be hers but then Donald calmed down a  little and she stumbled at the 9/11 memorial. In wrestling the opponent has escaped and is now on the loose and the score is tied. Essentially that is what we have now; a tied match and somebody has get a take down. Which would lead to the debate.

But Hillary can no longer even wait for that. She needs to attack now and make more noise than the Donald. No easy feat. But if the match is even then you have no choice but to attack and go for points. The debate should be hers but there is the thought that Trump people are locked in no matter what and that leaves the undecided. Madam President can no longer just hang on and wait for the buzzer...she has to attack and she better do it now.

What if a Man got Pneumonia and Didn't tell Anybody and then Fainted?

TRUE GRIT! He never gave up. He kept at it like a solider! Amazing! The man had pneumonia and he didn't let that stop him. No sir. Unh Unh. He just kept going to those campaign stops and let me tell you he is no whiner. Not a peep. Just a cough that's all he said and to think all this time he has been walking around with pneumonia! John Wayne no doubt. He would never complain about a cough. The man had cancer and had a lung removed and he still made movies! That's the kind of man you want to be President not some whiner who stops because of some crappy little bacterial infection like pneumonia.

That's why you need a man to be President. They are tough. They don't sit there and tell everyone they are sick. They keep it to themselves by God and it wasn't until he fainted that people knew. And even then he didn't want help. They made him get in that van. Hell no he wont go! Take Teddy Roosevelt. The man was shot and then still went on and gave a speech in Milwaukee. He wouldn't let pneumonia slow him down.. Why he would just lead another charge up a hill and then build the Panama Canal and after that he would go West to join the round up. Now there was a man! That was a President!

You don't stop. You don't tell anyone you are sick. YOU KEEP GOING!You don't stop until you fall down and I mean fall down. You got to that next stop until your knees buckle. That's what men do. They don't tell the press or people on their staff. By Godfrey they beat back that pesky cough and triumph! Now that's a MAN! Could you imagine a woman getting pneumonia. HA! Why the first thing she would do is stop and tell the press and her staff and probably try to get well! She sure woudn't press on and go to some memorial service and stay there until she dropped. Are you kidding? Women aren't that tough. The next thing they will say is a woman ran the White House when a president had a stroke and finished out World War I !

What Happens When Presidents Get Sick

When Woodrow Wilson had a massive stroke that paralyzed the left side of  his body and was unable to talk and restricted to bed there was no clear path for Vice President Marshall to take over the presidency. So Woodrow Wilson's wife Edith Wilson took over the White House and never let it go until Wilsons term was up. When James Garfield and was shot in the back and lingered for three months the vice president didnt take over either. The White House was run by Secretary Brown unofficially with others helping out. So why is it so hard for a President to leave when he or she gets sick?

For one thing the Constitution does not define what being "unable to fulfill the duites of President" means. There is no clear cut tripwire that says the Vice President has to take over. In Woodrow Wilsons case and with James Garfield both men had Vice Presidents who didn't wnat the presidency. When Marhsall came to the White House Edith Wilson turned him away annd let him know that they would send for him if they need him. They never did and Marshall was relieved. Same with Garfield, his Vice President dreaded the idea of taking over the White House.

Both Wilson and Garifeld lived at a time when the press was kept at arms lenght. People didn't see Woodrow Wilson for five months and Garfield dissapeared from view for the three months before he died with few getting access to the Commander in Chielf. Today we live in a world where a Presidential  candidte stumbles and we know it. Still, Ronald Reagen managed to keep from the world he had dementia. One thing is for sure, no one can disspaear for months at a time anymore and Edith Wilson would have a hard time today assuming the role of President today. Still, we could see Bill Clinton stepping in for Hillary and like Edith... he might never leave.

What You Don't Know About The First Madam President

She was from the South. Her name was Edith Bolling Wilson and married President Woodrow Wilson after his wife Ellen Wilson died. They were only married four years and then Woodrow had a massive stroke and Edith took over the White House. This was in 1919 and from here on Edith Wilson ran the government until 1921. She had only two years of school and had run a successful jewelry company after her first husband died. She owned one of the first electric cars in Washington and was given the first drivers license in the District of Columbia. She was fifteen years younger than Woodrow Wilson and considered very attractive.
They necked in the presidential limousine when they were courting. Edith deciphered top secret codes for the President. When he had a stroke she controlled who saw him and who didn't.  She oversaw legislation and secured appointments for his cabinet. All this while her husband was on deaths door and many thought he would die. She saw the Vice President only once and told him his services weren't needed. She oversaw the end of World War I and was in the middle of the fight to get the United States into the League of Nations.
She would show her husband movies and wheel him outside to the South Portico for air. She had him put in the presidential limousine and propped up so people would know he was still alive. She outlived him by forty years and was at John Kennedy's inauguration. She wrote a memoir in 1939 and denied running the White House. In the National Archives are correspondence that was never opened during her Presidency and discovered in the 1950s. She just couldn't get to it.
She was our first woman President and has never been recognized for her service to the country.

Matt Lauers Lost Opportunity

It came toward the end of the interview. He had waffled his way through with Trump and nothing was really sticking. He had gone over the email ground with Hillary. He let the Russian thing go. So Trump thinks Putin is better than Obama. Matt was just tolling along unaware that he was about to be able to save himself. Not Trump or Hillary. But himself because he will never pass this way again. But here it was. The clutch play.

What kind of things do you read to prepare yourself for being Commander in Chief? Trump stared at him. His eyes squinted. What do you read to prepare yourself for this job? The Trumper was stumped. Just for a moment. Then he launched. Well I am surrounded by generals and my children run my businesses and I am doing a lot of things at once. So I have a lot of good people around me. You could see the vein next to Trumps eye twitch. It was there. He doesn't read. He doesn't prepare. Lauer had him right there.

And what did he do....he let it go. He never asked the question again. Trump would have to admit to the world he reads nothing to prepare for the most powerful position on earth. It was the Sarah Palin interview. I can see Russia from my back door. It was there. The same kind of awful moment where the candidate is revealed. But Matt...Matt just let it go.

And now Matt has been let go and will never go beyond the morning shows again.

How Did Madam President Lose Her Advantage

They are neck and neck now. What happened? Trump accelerated and Hillary slowed down. How when the Trumpian world went into a death spiral after gaffes and failed visits to Mexico.  The base. The Trumpian base is immutable. My dad is voting for Trump and there is nothing in  Gods heavens that will change that. Trumpeteers do  not waver nor equivocate They double down. There is no eroding the Trumpian base. They will vote enmasse  to upset the order. The speech after Mexico proved their endurance.

Hillary Clintons base is more of a quilt. It is a hodgepodge made up of women and minorities and college educated males. After that it is anybodies guess. The base does erode and fluctuate. Bad news does affect the voters. While Trumpians become galvanized as their candidate goes rogue Hillary supporters waver. Maybe the difference is one  is a movement and one is an election. The Trumpians see themselves as a new order coming to fruition. Madam President supporters see themselves defending the order against a possible disaster

So that is the setup. The debates could not be more important. Trump cannot win with just his base and Hillary cannot win with the wavering grass roots that might remain loyal and might not. Something has got to give. Sept 26th should be interesting.
