Our Lowbrow Democracy
Madam President brought a pen to a knife fight. Donald Trump didn't like that last debate. He was too caged. It was too formal. So this time the debate resembled a back alley knife fight. This is not Madam Presidents milyer and the Donald knew this. He prowled around and jabbed quickly and then retreated. Our democracy went lowbrow for all the world to see.
There were no issues. The questions from the citizens meant nothing. More like the commercials between rounds in a box match. No one was listening or cared. I have been saying that Trump will roll out a grenade eventually and it will have a Bill Clinton pin. He rolled it and the concussion did stun Hillary. She lost her footing as the debate slipped into a reality show. The real tragedy is that the tawdriness of our culture has made the leap from cable right into our living rooms. Truly nothing is sacred now.
And whose minds were changed. No one. It is our modern civil war. People do not associate with others from different political parties. They don't like the other. So the Trumpians remained Trumpians and Madam President supporters stayed in their camp. The only thing that changed was our democracy as the bar was lowered once again.

If Madam President Can't Get the Woman Vote Now...
The polls were in her favor before Donald stepped off the bus and told the world his view of women. Still there were the Hillary haters who seemed to turn a blind eye and ear to anything Trump did. But now there is this and it has done many interesting things. We have seen the limits of television especially on CNN where the word Donald used was uttered over and over and two pundits went at it. My children are watching one Trump pundit snapped. The irony of her position and her protest colliding for millions to see.
But that is the problem with this latest assault. This one went to the gut or somewhere else for women and it is almost impossible to spin. But not totally impossible. The spin will come tonight with the only comeback there is for Trump: Bill Clinton did far worse will be the doomsday bomb in his arsenal and it will only work if he goes into the gory details. Sort of like blowing out a fire with an explosion...the concussion in theory extinguishes the flames.
And if the Donald is to salvage anything with women the only thing he can hope for is to damage Hillary with Bill Clinton's affair to the point where voters say well they are both bad and so I might as well stick with the Donald. It is the last resort and if it doesn't work then Madam President has the woman vote locked up tighter than Trumps shrinking chances to be President.

Madam Presidents Close Election in 1916
Edith Wilson had a close election of her own in 1916. And it was about as nasty as this one. Woodrow Wilson was running for re-election and Edith had only been married to the President for one year. She hoped and believed he would lose and they could go live their new life together. Wilson was running against Charles Evans Hughes and many thought he would lose. The country had war fever yet Wilson did not declare war against Germany. Teddy Roosevelt accused the president of everything but treason and then he accused him of that as well.
Speak Softly and Carry a Big Stick became Wilson Speaks softly and carries a dishrag. But more than that the people seemed ready for a change and Hughes played on war fever and many saw Wilson and his new wife Edith as finished. The day of the election the New York Times called it for Hughes before voting was even finished. Wilson acknowledged defeat and said he would telegram Hughes in the morning. He went to bed. Edith followed him up and found him awake.
"Well my dear, it seems you will get your wish and we can do all those things you have been wanting to do." He then went to sleep. The returns from the West had not come in and especially California with its high number of delegates. When Wilson woke he found the election undecided. All the next day the counting continued but was slowed by a snowstorm in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Ballots were counted by hand and horse drawn wagons carried the ballots thorough the snow. Finally the next day all the votes were counted and Wilson won by a whisper. Madam President braced herself for four more years. Little did she know her own presidency would begin in a few years.

Maybe Pence Should Run Against Madam President
He was calm cool and collected. He didn't take the bait of his opponent. He waited and carefully dodged Kaines well lobbed shells. He came back and framed it in the bigger picture of Washington establishment versus the outsider. He didn't make funny faces. He made manly faces. A few grimaces, a few head shakes, the self deprecating smile. Isn't this funny, isn't this absurd these things my opponent is saying. Of course he didn't defend Donald but in a way he didn't have to. He played the Vice President card perfectly.
Vice Presidents dont really matter very much, unless the terrible thing happens. When McKinley died Teddy Roosevelt ruled the White House but it did not put Vice President Marshall in the White House when Woodrow Wilson had a stroke and Edith Wilson took over. Marshall didnt want to be President and Edith didnt want him to be either. So even then the Vice President might not become the big man.
But really they should switch the ticket. Trump would be a great vice president. A carefully trained attack dog who could run the economy. Pence could play the cool commander in control while his Vice President did all the dirty work. The perfect good cop bad cop. With Pence at the top of the ticket issues would matter because Pence believes in what he believes. He really does believe in pro life and all the other God and country issues that seem to grow like the corn in Indiana. And here is the big one...wait for it...he doesn't attack.
That is not who he is. He disagrees. He may not be the man of the hour but he is interested in dialogue and discussion and eventually compromise. So if he and Hillary had a debate it might be an interesting civilized affair where real issues are discussed.
How novel.

Edith Wilsons Love Hate Relationship with the Suffragettes
She really didn't like them. They were pushy and flashed the president as he drove by. They chained themselves to the White House gate and burned Edith's husband in effigy. They put their bodies in front of the presidential limousine. Then when they were arrested and went on hunger strikes and called her husband foul names. The suffragettes were getting no love from the woman who would take over the White House and run it from 1919 to 1921.
Edith Wilson was from the South and even though she had an electric car, traveled the world, had a somewhat racy affair with a sitting president; she still believed a lady should like a lady. And she didn't particularly care about getting the vote. She was doing just fine and she had made her way after a dead husband and a dead baby and escaped poverty by grit and determination. So why should women need any more power than they already had?
But then the story veers. When Woodrow Wilson was approached to speak to the Senate on behalf of the women's right to vote he said no citing protocol and the Sabbath. But then a sudden switch of heart and he consented. Wilson didn't believe in an amendment giving women the right to vote. He thought of it as a state issue. But within hours after the request he mysteriously changed his mind. All the facts point toward Edith. She was at the bottom practical and saw that the vote would come eventually for women. Woodrow could secure his place in history by pushing it through.
Woodrow Wilson used Edith as a sounding board and on this issue his young wife certainly had a voice. Edith Wilson was a woman who went her own way and he we can see her dismissing protocol and the sabbath with a snap of her fingers. It is fitting the First Woman President should have had a hand in the struggle to get women the vote.

Edith Wilson Secret Presidency in Larson's Dead Wake
I am amazed how many people don't know about Woodrow Wilson having a massive stroke and Edith Wilson taking over the White House. Usually when I speak someone will say oh yes I heard about that. And then they say they read about it in Eric Larsons book Dead Wake. I know exactly the passage they are talking about. I am a Eric Larson fan and read Devil in the White City and I devoured Dead Wake. The latest book DW is about the sinking of the Lusitania so how did Woodrow Wilson and Edith play into this?
When the Lusitania slipped under the pearly green ocean Woodrow Wilson was in the middle of courting Edith Wilson. Wilson was writing torrid love letters when he was notified the Germans had sunk the Lusitania with Americans on board. To many this was the tripwire into World War I. Certainly Theodore Roosevelt thought so along with Henry Cabot Lodge. Roosevelt threatened to skin Wilson alive if he didn't declare war against the Germans. He didnt'.
And here is where Larson swerves and gives the story of Woodrow Wilson and the woman fifteen years younger whom he would marry and then would take over the White House with only two years of schooling and no experience at all. Eric Larson goes further and delves into Wilson's stroke and the cover up and Edith's ascension. What is interesting is this is a sideshow to the Lusitania but it really stuck. History is really all about the sideshows and a case could be made that Wilson was severely distracted with his love affair and that this contributed to his reluctance to declare war. His volume of love letters dipped, then resumed.
The Ardent Lover was not be put off and war would not be declared against Germany until 1917. Such are the vagaries of history and the still untold story of Edith Wilson.

Woodrow Wilson's Other Woman'
In light of the fact that Bill Clintons peccadillo's are fast becoming campaign fodder with Mr. Trump saying he is fair game and sure to invoke the equivalent of a nuclear first strike in the next debate by shaming Hillary with her shaming of Bills women...it is probably time to remember there is nothing new under the sun. And Woodrow Wilson beat Bill Clinton by about a hundred years with a woman named Mary Peck.
It was very nineteenth century in that no one could say what exactly happened but it went like this. Woodrow left his first wife Ellen for a "rest cure" and went to Bermuda when he was President of Princeton. There he met Mary Peck and hobnobbed with Mark Twain and other luminaries. Wilson had a quick mind and was taken with Mary Pecks wit, beauty, and her early flapper ways. Bermuda was the left bank of it's time and there was a bohemian quality to Mary that Wilson responded to. So what happened....
Well Wilson started writing letters. Hundreds of letters to her. And then he went back to Bermuda again without his wife. He saw Mary Peck and if a physical component entered into the relationship it was here. Lets just say it got bad enough that Wilson confessed to his wife Ellen and they had to "put it behind them.;" Ellen would later say the "Mary Peck affair" was the only time he had caused her unhappiness. But it wasn't over.
'
Mary Peck surfaced while Wilson was in the White House and he had to help her out financially and then the letters he had written almost saw the light during his election campaign. And then finally he had to tell Edith about Mary as the letters were being offered around for sale. Edith took the high road and decided the past was the past. So when the circus begins in the next debate just remember it has all been done before.

The Vote Against Women
We really don't think about it too much but there is a vote against women in this election. They are a minority and for a lot of people women are looped in with African Americans, Muslims, Mexicans and "the other." Misogyny is alive and well and we don't have to look far to see it displayed on our national stage. The suffragettes knew this very well and people like Alice Paul saw it as a war on women. She went so far as to lay down in front of carriages and carry on hunger strikes and was eventually force fed and put in an insane asylum.
She knew that there were elements in the country that would never let women have the vote in 1919 which ironically is the year Edith Wilson took over the White House. The great juxtaposition of history is that while Edith Wilson was running the government as the First Woman President the suffragettes were chaining themselves to the White House gate. They had no idea they had hopscotched right over the gate and into the presidency. It still took two more years for women to get the vote.
And today we assume most people have no problem with a Woman President. But this isn't true. There are people who believe a woman is not strong enough or has enough "stamina" for the job. That was the pitch the other night at the debate. And then there are just people who are women haters. But the vote against women is very real and will be a factor in the election It is the reason that Edith Wilson never claimed she ran the government in her 1939 Memoir. She knew better than to upstage a man...particularly a president.

Madam President Keeps Her Cool
We all knew Trump would come looking for blood. Madam President knew it too. And she had prepared for it. There were only a few moments where it looked like the Donald might break through...maybe a couple on trade. But then she smiled and the Donald was left jabbing at air. Did Madam President discover the antidote for being Trumped? Could it be that if you don't take the bait and stick to your message then there is no engagement for the Donald.
And it worked. The Donald simply couldn't get traction which left us staring at him and it wasn't pretty. And what will the result of the first debate be? The Donald has already told us. He is going after Bill in the next one. He has already decided he was too nice. He should not have listened to those around him and should have just attacked. Next time he will. Bet on it.
After the papers come out and the Monday night massacre is confirmed, the Donald will go for the jugular in round two. And it will be down and dirty. Like Rocky Trump will go for a knock out punch and like Rocky it will be a one in a million shot. If Madam President keeps her cool then Trump will again be swinging at the air. He may not even come back for round three. You heard it here first.

Madam Presidents Moment of Truth
Madam President will face off tonight with Donald Trump and like the Kennedy Nixon debate we will have a clear victor. There is too much riding on it to be a tie. They will not both do well. Someone will dominate and it will come down to this: Donald will knock Hillary off her game or he won't. Lets face it Hillary is a wonk and Donald is anything but. So if she can stay in the land of wonkdom then the Donald will find little oxygen to feed the fire. But...if the Donald can throw a wrench into the finely tuned gears of policy and pedagogy then he may emerge victorious.
Basically Hillary cannot take the bait and the Donald must maneuver outside of her wheelhouse of foreign policy experience and governmental knowledge. Tough to do but Trump trumped very experienced men on his way to the top and he did it by changing the narrative midstream and trivializing all policy as just insider political effervesce while positioning himself as the agent of change if not outrage. It is a bit like going to a discussion of Tolstoy and talking about action films. People may appreciate Tolstoy but action films sure are entertaining.
And there is Donald's play; will entertainment trump substance? Have we gone to the internet mind that doesn't care about anything beyond the 140 character tweet. Even intelligent people will eat sugar even if they know its bad for them. Madam President will have to show that sugar is a high that always comes down.
