Hire a Deaf American Sign Language teacher at LBCC

TL;DR, My college won’t hire a Deaf professor to teach an ASL (American Sign Language) class, for reasons bordering on discrimination.

Hey guys, so, I don’t do stuff like this a lot, but the college Joe and I both attend is refusing to hire a new sign language professor, and their reasonings are on a thin line crossing over into discrimination.

Emily Schwartz has been teaching alongside the “official professor”, Professor Hamm, since the beginning of our semester. Emily is Deaf herself, ASL is her first language, and she also has a degree in Deaf studies on top of all of that. Emily WAS hired to be the professor, they had planned for her to teach the class that Prof. Hamm previously taught, but then the night before class, they said that she was no longer going to be able to teach the class, and that they were not going to hire her. They supposedly say she doesn’t have “two years experience”, however, no where on the job listing does it say that experience is required.

Emily is more than qualified to teach this class. With her teaching alongside Prof. Hamm, I have learned more in TWO MONTHS, than I have in a year of taking ASL classes with other professors at the same campus. I feel like I’ve completely doubled my proficiency in the language, and I really, REALLY want to see Emily hired, so that not only I can continue my education with her as my professor, but so that any other new students entering into the Sign classes at LBCC can have the same feeling I do in this class.

So, yea, I really really really want to see this happen, and once it gets enough signatures, we’re going to present it to the higher-ups in the Communications department to really get our point across. My classmates and I are also going to write letters, because being in class with Emily, I really don’t want ANY other instructor teaching me after this point, especially not the ones that they have at LBCC currently.
