In honour of Trafalgar Day, I present one of the gun decks on the restored HMS Victory at Portsmouth. Cramped, isn’t it? And imagine the noise…
The guns are replicas, but they have one that they say was actually used at Trafalgar.
There’s a little plaque on the deck where Admiral Lord Nelson is supposed to have been shot, by an enemy sniper. ‘Aim for the one-armed guy with the shiny gongs!’

Bank of England, Threadneedle Street. The facade you see is actually a fortress wall - the old building has been gutted and replaced inside. It’s like a castle with a moat! Awesome…
Note the dragon (symbol of the City of London) atop the lamp post. There are dragons everywhere in the City - the more you look, the more you see.
The Bank of England Museum is quite cool. There’s the historical section (yes!) and then the ‘we’re not evil!’ section, which was instructive to say the least. Featuring finance-for-dummies classics such as ‘Inflation is BAD!’ and ‘Here’s why we don’t just print more money’. Hey, I learned something :)
(And yes, a gloomy day in London when I took this pic…)

On the face of it, an uninspiring picture of a building in Amen Court, near Old Bailey… but look closer.
That brick wall at the end of the driveway? The last remnant of the old Newgate Prison, which was demolished in 1902. Or so I’m told.

Dick Whittington’s cat, Highgate Hill.
This cute little monument stands on the spot where legend has it young Dick was on his way out of town, when he heard the Bow Bells foretelling his future and turned back.
How’d that work out for him? Well, Sir Richard Whittington was thrice Lord Mayor of London, under Richard II, Henry IV and Henry V, as well as Sheriff.
A big man of his day. Good decision, Dick.
