An Arbor Meditation

Stepping outside;
A breath,
A pause.
I rested a hand to a tree.

And leaned into it
With the weight of my weariness.

The coarse sturdiness of its age
Held it
Steadily.

Like an ocean
Holds the sorrows of fishes.

“Look for the heart of a tradition in the actions of its humble servants and selfless teachers. Listen and let the teachings be borne out, or set aside, based on your experience.”
Andrew Furst, Western Lights: A Collection of Essays on Buddhism

“If we are looking to employ logic to infer a deity, we fall into absurdity.”
Andrew Furst, Western Lights: A Collection of Essays on Buddhism

“Separating the God question from Buddhism does not make Buddhists atheists—within silence lies mystery. That doesn’t mean, however, we should infer from this acknowledgement of the mystery a nod one way or another on the matter of the divine.”
Andrew Furst, Western Lights – A Collection of Short Essays on Buddhism

Pubslush Literary...: New Campaign - Poetry for the Benefit Of Others 1 3 Sep 15, 2015 07:15PM
“When we sit in meditation, we are closer than usual to the world as it is. By simply bringing body, breath, and mind together in the present moment, we touch Buddha; we touch reality, and we are in the world as it is. Most people’s experience in this state is peaceful and rejuvenating.”

“People demand freedom of speech as a compensation for the freedom of thought which they seldom use.”
Søren Kierkegaard

“Every great magic trick consists of three parts or acts. The first part is called "The Pledge". The magician shows you something ordinary: a deck of cards, a bird or a man. He shows you this object. Perhaps he asks you to inspect it to see if it is indeed real, unaltered, normal. But of course... it probably isn't. The second act is called "The Turn". The magician takes the ordinary something and makes it do something extraordinary. Now you're looking for the secret... but you won't find it, because of course you're not really looking. You don't really want to know. You want to be fooled. But you wouldn't clap yet. Because making something disappear isn't enough; you have to bring it back. That's why every magic trick has a third act, the hardest part, the part we call "The Prestige".”
Christopher Priest, The Prestige
