Sherlock Holmes Society of London reviews A Chronology of the Life of Arthur Conan Doyle

image

"As Randall Stock notes in his foreword, a chronology is not a biography, but A Chronology of the Life of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, May 22nd 1859 to July 7th 1930, the magnum opus of Brian W Pugh, is more valuable than most of the published lives of Conan Doyle. The new edition adds about fifty pages, seven of them containing a chronological summary of the journal recently published as ‘Dangerous Work’: Diary of an Arctic Adventure (enthusiastically reviewed in DM 325). Here are lists of ACD’s various homes, his sporting career, the burial places of the Doyles, statues and plaques, and more, including some fascinating photographs. But the essence of the book is in the orderly calendar of Sir Arthur’s life, in which innumerable ambiguities and uncertainties are authoritatively resolved. Brian Pugh has created that rare thing, a genuinely essential work of reference."

Roger Johnson

Peter E. Blau reviews A Chronology of the Life of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, 2014 Edition

"Brian W. Pugh continues to revise his A CHRONOLOGY OF THE LIFE OF SIR ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE (Mar 13 #6); the third edition (London: MX Publishing, 2014; 303 pp.) delightful and valuable as a resource for information about the life and work of Conan Doyle. The chronology starts in 1755 (the birth of James Doyle) and ends in 1998 (the memorial service for Dame Jean), and there are splendid photographs (old and new), a list of statues and plaques around the world, a new section detailing his Arctic voyage in 1 880, careful citations of sources, and much more."

The Sherlock Holmes Society of London reviews Two, To One, Be

“Project Two, to One, Be: Sherlock Holmes and a House of Light, Shadows and Views edited by Carrie Carlson & Lynn Gale. John Gibson has written the introduction, and the foreword is by Laurie R King. There follow nearly 140 pages of essays, long and short, enhanced by photographs and original artwork, some of it, like Riley Stark’s cover design, outstanding. Ms Carlson notes: ‘Not all of our contributors are professionals in their chosen medium, and many of the writers are non-native English Speakers, and yet they all speak from the heart.” All the royalties from the book go to the Undershaw campaign. Believe me, it’s worth while.”

The Sherlock Holmes Society of London reviews A Study in Terror Volume 1

"Volume 1 of A Study in Terror: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Revolutionary Stories of Fear and the Supernatural, edited by Derrick Belanger. The influence of Poe on Conan Doyle wasn’t limited to his stories of detection: the tales of mystery and imagination left their mark as well. ACD didn’t write very much in that vein, but the best of it can be classed with the best of Poe. Here are eight stories – ‘The Terror of Blue John Gap’, ‘The Horror of the Heights’, ‘The Captain of the Pole Star’, ‘J Habakuk Jephson’s Statement’, ‘The Leather Funnel’, ‘The Silver Mirror’, ‘Through the Veil’ and ‘The Parasite’ – of which at least the first three and ‘The Leather Funnel’ are absolutely in the top rank. They come with three good essays, the most interesting to me being Derrick Belanger’s ‘Revisions of History: Arthur Conan Doyle and the Mary Celeste Mystery’, which tells how ‘J Habakuk Jephson’s Statement’, though not his best, became perhaps Conan Doyle’s most influential short story. A second volume is due on 19 November. "

New review of Close To Holmes

As a London tour guide, writing a walk about Sherlock Holmes and trying to track down actual and fictional locations in the stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was no easy feat. I needed to get into the head of ACD and look at his view of London in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. I didn’t achieve that, however Alistair Duncan’s “Close to Holmes” gave me a good pen-picture of Victorian London that ACD would have known and where he probably placed Sherlock Holmes adventures in London. To channel a well-known United States politician, when tracking down Sherlock Holmes locations there are ‘known knowns’, i.e. actual places like Barts Hospital. There are 'known unknowns’, fictional locations based on real ones, e.g 'Where is Saxe-coburg Square?’. Tracking these, and better still, having your theories accepted, is a never-ending game for Sherlockians. In “Close to Holmes” Alistair Duncan informatively entertainingly describes the 'known knowns’ and elegantly extrapolates without lurching into speculation, the possibilities of the 'known unknowns’. A companion/gazetteer that should be in easy reach on every Sherlockian’s bookshelf.

Close to Holmes is available from all good bookstores, in many formats worldwide including Amazon USA,  Barnes and Noble, Amazon UK,  Waterstones UK,  Book Depository(free worldwide delivery), Amazon Kindle,  Kobo, Nook  and iBooks for the iPad/iPhone.

The Sherlock Holmes Society of London reviews A Chronology of the Life of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle - Revised 2018 Edition

Brian Pugh has been working on his chronology of Arthur Conan Doyle for many years. The 2009 edition was a trusty companion and, as it went through subsequent revisions, I was gratified to see my own works referred to in its pages. I value and admire Brian’s work so much that it is an honour to be mentioned alongside great names such as Stashower, Lycett, Dickson Carr and Nordon. This latest version is enormous at over 450 pages — roughly three times the size of the 2009 edition.

So what do you get in this edition? First and foremost it incorporates all corrections to previous editions, thus superseding them. It also includes all the maps (now in full colour) and material featured in the 2016 Addenda & Corrigenda. Then, of course, there are the fruits of Brian’s latest research: family trees, maps, photographs of residences, commemorative plaques, graves, a day-by-day list of pertinent activities, a bibliography of Conan Doyle and those who’ve written about him. There are also photos, of which some are appearing in print, it is believed, for the first time. Any student of Doyle (and Holmes) needs to be equipped with certain books — the core texts if you will. This is a vital element of that core library.

A Chronology of the Life of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle - Revised 2018 Edition

A Chronology of the Life of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was first published in 2009; this was fully revised, expanded in 2012 and 2014, an Addenda & Corrigenda was published in 2016.  This 2018 edition has been completely updated and revised and supersedes all previous editions, it includes all of the revisions and corrections that were made previously plus the information and maps included in the Addenda & Corrigenda.  Also included is information located during research since 2016.  New photographs have been added to those already published and The Times is now listed in the sources with the date of publication.  The index has been compiled professionally by Geraldine Beare.

The first section contains a family tree and a detailed chronology of the major and minor events in the life of Sir Arthur and his family from 1755 to 1930.  This is followed by sections on events from 1930 to 1998, An Arctic Voyage in 1880, maps of Conan Doyle’s travels, the residences of Conan Doyle and his family, where are they buried, locations of plaques and statues, Arthur Conan Doyle and cricket, Arthur Conan Doyle and Portsmouth Football Club, Innes Doyle and cricket, a list of biographies and semi-biographical works, a list of Facsimile manuscripts that have been published, a bibliography, a selective list of miscellaneous writings, works consulted and about the chronologist.  Finally, there are a number of well-reproduced photographs of ACD his family at various times of his life; some have not appeared in print before. This publication proves that there is more to Arthur Conan Doyle than just Sherlock Holmes.

If you only want one book about Sir Arthur Conan Doyle this is the one. What Brian Pugh has done here is incredible. No other author has had a book like this written about his life and that is a fact! A must own book!” -  Doyle Society Copenhagen
