Asiana Flight 214
There is a nice benefit of having a personal blog, and that is I can publish my opinion.
The results of the NTSB report on the crash of Asiana Flight 214 came out today. For a while the news media was speculating that Boeing might be partially at fault regarding the ‘complexity’ of the flight computer. The results were that it was totally the pilot’s fault, I’m glad the NTSB used their brains instead of listening to the press.
In my opinion the pilots were 100% at fault. They weren’t monitoring their descent rate as they approached the landing. As the descent rate increases it takes more altitude to land. This is similar to a car going around a corner. If you don’t slow down properly before the corner, you’ll skid.
I say this from experience. I was flying a C-130 at night over water and with no external visual cues I let my descent rate get to large and I almost hit the water. Descent rate can be a killer if the pilot doesn’t monitor it.

SIMPOC Book Covers
All great inputs, I appreciate all of them. I decided to stay with cover with a focus on binary numbers, although a much different style. I agree, that for many people binary numbers will mean different things. I’ve tried to make it simpler and let the font stand out better. I went this way for no other reason than I can’t think of another way to depict a computer. Perhaps I’m dense.
Also I don’t want to wear you guys out, because I have another book series named Gemini, on which I’d like your inputs. I’ll send that cover out later this week for comments.
I agree 100% with having a pro do them, but I’m a typical ‘new’ author. All total I’ve got 8 books in two series coming out. I’m not in the position to spend $100+/cover for all of them, so I’m taking the PowerPoint route and trying to unleash ‘my creative side’.
If I can make some $ on the first releases then I’ll make the investment for a pro. I don’t want to but, these will be for sale for a long time so if necessary I’ll update the covers later on.
I’d still love any feedback, plus or minus.

Need Input on book covers
I would like some input on one of my series book covers. This is the one currently available on Amazon and I’ll be releasing another in the series in the next couple of week. That cover will be same as this one with a different color font and different sub title.
So, before I commit to far into the series I’d like some input on this. Do you think this is professional and attractive enough. On Amazon the cover is critical to get people to take the first look. So please let me know what you think.

TV Series 6/22
Hey I just noticed a new TV series starting 6/22 called The Last Ship. The story has some similarities to my second SIMPOC book (Due out about the same time). In my book, some of the few remaining humans on Earth are on Navy Ships, but I suspect that my book is going in a different direction from the TV series.

Covers for Series
Here is an interesting question. I have two series, Gemini is 5 books and SIMPOC is currently 2 and it will likely grow further. My question is about the covers. Should the covers follow a consistent visual theme or should they be somewhat standalone. I’ve followed some series where the title, sub-title or covers change and the follow-on volumes aren’t clear as such.
In my opinion I’m following a pretty obvious visual format for both of the series, I feel that someone scanning through AKD will see the connection and know that vol 2 is connected to vol 1.
What are your thoughts?

SIMPOC – The Thinking Computer
Link to Amazon
How does a thinking computer take over the world? What happens when his programmer and all humans on earth die and he is left alone to survive and continue thinking? He must also help the few remaining humans in space, and unfortunately there is another computer like him that has a different instruction set?
Exciting first book of a new series on Amazon KD. It will make a great weekend read. I hope you enjoy it. And it’s only 99 cents and about 90 pages long.

Gemini
Just to let everyone know, I’ve delayed the release of my 5 book series Gemini. I found an opportunity to have it reviewed by some fellow authors, so I decided to take the offer. Hope to have it start releasing in a month.
